Trade down

If we trade down who do you think would trade with us?

I think you first have to look at what players will be available at our number 8 spot. We know most likely Adrian Peterson, Joe Thomas, Calvin Johnson, and JaMarcus Russell will be gone. In my mind those four guys are going to be gone. After that I think the only guys that will influence a team to trade is either Brady Quinn and Amobi Okeye. I can't really see any other team trading up to acquire any other of the remaining players.

What teams are really needing QB and DT?

If Quinn is there I am wondering if Carolina is wondering about the future of Delhomme there. Was this a fluke year for him? Was there and injury problem lingering? Chris Weinke looked horrible as the back up. The team is pretty deep and could afford this year's first and their second to trade up. Not sure outside of this who would be pressing for the pick there. New England has two late first rounders but i am inclined to think they will use them to reload for yet another deep playoff run and continued success. Jsut not sure who else would come calling there unless Levi Brown's stock rises more so at his pro day + draft combine. Which any that case i hope it moves us to select him there preferably.

trading down is like holding a bird in hand thats worth two in the bush. let me put it another way, trading down would be like letting some guy you don't know or even like get the prettiest girl leaving you the leftovers, but sometimes a mans throw aways are another mans keepers. hope thats not too over the top, its been a long day :drunk:

Really, if we want someone who grades out to be a 10-15 pick, we might as well just take them at 8. Reaching on someone who is a graded at a few picks lower is not that bad and if you do trade down there is a risk of not even getting that guy (i.e. Derrick Johnson). Don't get cute with the pick, just take the player.

If we like Okoye but feel he isn't worth the 8th pick, just take him. It is better to take him a little high then not to take him at all.

I agree with beerlover. But would also say any offer that invovled '08 picks I would consider unless one of the players they realy coveted was on the board. You're talking about multipul picks, overvalued for one of the two certain QB s was on the board and someone came at you with a swap a two and an aditional two for '08, unless Peterson, Joe Thomas or Levi Brown was still on the board, I'd have to consider it. You guys better come to grips with the fact if things play out correctly...Quinn may be there and they just might pull the trigger on him.

We really could pick that guy and I wouldn't be upset with that at all...if that is "their guy".

I would love some sort of trade down in a certain situation for an 08 1st rder if possible. Brohm could be our future QB...I like him more than Quinn. It just completely guessing at this point but trading for more picks next year and/or this year would be a great situation to be in.

Brohm is a special QB to be sure, most feel he would benefit by going back to school and refine his skills so he could be a top 5 pick next year. one things almost certain if he had come out either Brady or Brohm would have been there @ that 8th pick, would have been interesting. But the Texans still need to fix the line before they invest in a 1st rd. franchise type QB. the reason why they need to use the 8th pick on Levi Brown :bowser:

after the top two tackles are gone I don't see any of the tackle prospects capable of coming here & starting immediately.

It would be foolish to trade the pick before the draft. There's absolutely no way anyone one person can know who will be there at #8.

Foolish...the wolf, Bill Belichick seems to make a habit out of it recently. I don't know about foolish. The '08 draft is going to be loaded with stuff we could use to get over the almost ran hump. No if someone comes up with a great offer, they've got to consider it. And agian a great offer is an over valued offer of a pair of twoes, one being in the '08 draft and a swap. Extra two in our pockets for '08 would be golden. They're not going to plug all the holes in one off season. Make you own "wish list" . I don't think we can get enough to get us into the play off mode ? Do you ? I don't think the texans make a move on a move down with the diiferent scenarios already on the mock draft boards and no one knows for certain who will end up where, like you say. But if Quinn falls or All Day falls and they do get an outstanding offer, they're going to think about it. I believe Rick Smith has already said as much.

Yeah, if a team makes an outrageous offer, then trade right now. If it isn't CLEARLY in our favor, then I would wait and see what happens on draft day.
That was the point of my post. We need help in all 3 facets of the game, so no, we won't be plugging all the holes in one draft. At least we should get some good guys to help bail out our sinking boat, though.

We do need a QB - and while Quinn might flop, he might also be an all-pro

So, if he slides, why not take him? How else are we going to end up with a decent qb? None will come through free agency anytime soon (Garcia will be the best FA and he is old) - teams will negotiate and trade first - so qbs that might be decent (Schaub) will still cost a fortune. So, why not roll the dice . . . . and hope it works. True if it doesn't then we just lost one high pick which could be a very good player at S or DL, but as long as we suck at qb, we are not going to be anything but mediocre at best.

If we don't, then next year we will be sitting here going "we need to draft a qb" - even if we have a veteran fillin that is adequate.

I guess we could always get lucky with a 3rd rounder - but the odds are highly against it and they take a lot longer to develop (or they would be first rounders).

If we draft a QB and expect him to start BEFORE we address the OL, who wants to help me take out a Lloyd's of London insurance policy on that QB? Carr is the wreck he is BECAUSE we haven't properly addressed the OL. He would be an adequate QB with good protection. We would be running Peyton Manning out of town if he was behind that line. Quinn might be the next Montana or Elway, but if we draft him, all he'll be is broken and bloody.

Because Quinn is a pocket passer, also he does not throw on the run well. He has not played well in big games. He has had great coaching and yet his flaws are glaring. How will a NFL coach make him that much better like a qb who has had only average college coaching. Plus do you really want to pay another unproven rookie big money? I would rather look for a guy in the 3rd round or later and see what my coaches can do with him in a few years.

We already ran Peyton Manning out of town. I agree we need to address the O-line but I don't believe Carr is the wreck he is because of our o-line problems. Sure it has made him play much worse at times and it has effected his growth as a player but Carr makes bad decisions with or without good protection.

Our offensive line was better last year than the year before and I expect it to continue to get better. We invested two draft picks last year and I would expect them to atleast select one this year. They are making an effort...it just takes a bit of time and experience. Getting a veteran FA would be a good idea if we are worried about Salaam being a liability (due to injury). The problem is the that it is difficult to get a good OL in FA.

one kind of dream trade down scenario i am leaning toward right now could do wonders for us.

Brady Quinn falls to us. Carolina decides they really want him. So they trade up with us. Giving us their 1st and 2nd round picks. we give them our 1st and 4th rd picks.

-Then at their spot at 14, we select Levi Brown. His stock is really rising, we'll see how the combine helps/hurts him. we might even select him at 8 but this would be better here. we all know our o line problems.

-Then in the 2nd round, we are thrilled that Ryan Kalil has not been selected. He's the best C in the draft and that's something we're very weak at. we pull a jets draft like last year going LT and C. Kalil and Brown would help our oline for the next decade...

-Then with Carolina's 2nd round pick we get the best possible CB that fell there. I'll go with Chris Houston if he's there. if not how's aaron ross or damyon hughes?

This would address our two biggest needs on our team imo. Offensive line and Secondary. all three would step right in and start for us...instantly improving our team. i think this situation would improve our team more than just about any other one.

what do y'all think of my dream trade down/picks?

I think i would...cry tears of happiness. Maybe even dance a lil Irish celebration jig...i dunno but i would be VERY happy if the draft turned out that way.

We ran Peyton all the way from Houston to Miami and the SB MVP. Getting Spencer and Winston in the 3rd last year was more a function of luck and maybe the law of averages. We just got lucky they were there and Dumb Capers wasn't our coach. Salaam might not be a starter type LT, but I'm not too worried about him being injured. Everything I've heard says he played through some pretty painful and numerous injuries. I kinda like Damian McIntosh of Miami as a FA LT. He's played on some good OL's.

More info on McIntosh please. Anybody? Man I want to plug that LT hole!
