Found this when I was looking through some mock drafts. For those that know more about this..is there any merit to these figures? I have no idea where they came from. I posted this here because there are a lot of questions about our cap room and how possibly moving David Carr and signing other FA this offseason could affect this.

I'm thinking that 12.7 mill is how much we'll have to spend. 89 mill is the total team salary. so, 12.7 = about 1 nasty FA signing or a few decent ones.

I don't know if those are correct or not, but the cap always seems to rise every season. So if the Texans have $13 million to spend right now, I'm guessing an extra $4-5 million will be added if/when the cap raises. $100 million plus on a group of 53 guys. God our society is great...

I believe I remember hearing the Niners have about $40M in cap space and the Titans almost have that much as well. I don't think these are accurate.

If we sign a guy for 5 years with a $25 million bonus, and $2.2 million salary, his cap hit may be as low as $7 million, & that would be one bad ass signing.

Cutting David is also supposed to give us $3 million, and the cap should be raised here soon..... so we're in pretty good shape.

I had a friend back in the day who told me NFL scouts said he was a LB prospect except for being to short and too slow .

I do not disagree with you but the CHronicle has indicated one major signing for defense (such as corner) and a lower impact player on offense. The salary cap range I've heard is $10- 13 million. I understood that was before the new cap which should increase another 3-4m. Since then Smith has indicated a desire to adjust salaries & I think the recent hiring of the NFL cap guru supports a major effort in that respect. Bidding war or not I just don't see Clemments getting $10 million in first year of a new contract so we should be in solid on bidding; leaving him choice of where to go. His home in the Woodlands may impact.

Wouldn't bother me one bit to see David here in Houston..... he's exactly what you are looking for in a back-up QB....

But I said what I meant. If we keep David, we pay him $4 million plus his $5.5 million dollar salary(or something like that).... $2 mill of the bonus, plus his salary goes against the cap......... $7.5 million

If he is cut, only the $4 million bonus goes against the cap. We save $3.5 million against the cap.

But it's not like the Raiders don't have talent. Jerry Porter, Randy Moss, Justin Fargas, Warren Sapp, Michael Huff.....

They were #3 overall in total defense, #1 against the pass, and better than Philly, Indy, Washington, & StLouis against the run.

There problem was Art Shell, that's why he isn't there anymore. I don't think he handled the Jerrry Porter thing very well, and he couldn't get the guys on offense to play very well. That team isn't as bad as we were last year, and look at us now..

Going through this cap schedule, I don't see any correlation between a team spending more or less money and the result connecting to better or worse.

My point is, spending money for the sake of spending isn't important, picking the players is what is important. However, the less money you spend and the more successful you are, you don't go to CAP HELL at some point and not required to totally gut your team and start from scratch.

My point is, the Texans really don't need to overspend in the free agency market. Have a good draft like last year and find some gems that will fit well within the system that will give the appearance those free agent pickups are overachieving, which in reality, they just fit the system.

Unfortunately, Carr needs more talent around him to evaluate him, which means you need to spend more money than usual, otherwise you have the same excuse from previous years why the offense isn't successful in scoring points. This is delimma with keeping Carr, spend more money than required or risk the same old results and correspodning excuse...

I didn't say I agreed with how he was being paid. We've been overpaying him for the last 5 years, what's one more. With David On the bench, we'd get to see how our line can perform with someone who is competant..... maybe he'll play a little more relaxed if he has to come into the game, knowing the line can give him some protection.

My point exactly. If Carrs is kept, why won't they ask him to restructure? I think Our 2nd best weapon this off season will be the cap guru (having problems with his name today). If they want, I think we could be at $18 m under and that is some gravy.

TK, Carr is known for making mistakes and not putting points on the board...isn't 5 yrs long enough to show just a little 'hint' of un-tapped potential...with something to prove.?

IMO, if Carr is on the roster, he'll play. There is no way they'll pay him that kind of money to ride the bench....

...and, as Hollywood Texan said on another thread--if we keep Carr, we'd better get him all the players he needs to play at a level that can put points on the board...if we don't, nothing else is going to matter.

I believe that the salary cap goes up to $109 million next season.

We should have paid off some dead money contracts this year (Walker, Wade, Coleman, etc.) and will probably cut some high-dollar guys like Weigert, Wong, Payne, Domanick, etc., so we should be in pretty good shape cap-wise.

Yes, those are the real cap numbers for this year. Rick Smith's first job this offseason is to restructure some of the "overpayed" players forementioned in this thread. We may need Smith to do what he did during the regular season and thats to find some noname free agents and expect them to fill big roles or have one hell of a draft class.
