Most of what I've read on here has been about our safeties(or lack thereof) and needing a #2 CB to complement DR. Don't burn me at the stake here, but I'm not so sure we don't need a #1 CB with DR being #2. He's as asolid a tackler and a hard hitter, but his coverage skills don't seem to be "shut down" to me. He's had one good year( with AG opposite him) and has been beaten and burned as much as anyone else on this team since. Maybe we could pick up a CB in FA and use #1 or #2 on CB and move DR to FS. He has the skills to be an AWESOME FS. i know I'm treading on sacred ground with this, but I really don't feel good about DR being our #1 CB. Any thoughts?

nah i wouldnt do it. dunta can smother recievers better than anyone we have. if he played him at FS, we would be wasting talent. i think we need to go in a different direction than CC brown. im not saying he will never be a good FS, but he is too raw right now. we need someone who wont bite on play fakes and wont make stupid penalties like the ones he made vs the colts at the beginning of the season

I don't think there is really definitive answer to this. #1 or #2 is really irrelevant. The fact is Dunta needs help. You could say that Dunta lacks coverage skills or you could say Dunta lacks help over the top, chicken and the egg, doesn't matter. What I think we could all agree on is that Dunta would benefit greatly on getting help both opposite of him at CB and over the top at FS.

I wouldn't be opposed to moving Dunta to FS though if we could sign Samuels or Clements and draft Hall in the first.

I think it might actually maximize his talents. He's a much better tackler than smotherer(LOL). A move to FS would allow him to better support the run AND stunt him on blitzes, along the lines if Pittsburgh. A better passrush would make everything seem shiny and new.

I view it like this....

You can't have a superstar at every position...Can we find better corner than Dunta ? yes...Is there one that will just be available for us to draft, trade for, sign ? I doubt it.....

Sure there are corners that are better than D-rob, but not many...He isn't pro-bowl caliber(yet) but he is good enough to be a number one, if we have a solid FS, and a solid #2 opposite....

I wouldn't be too concerned with a number one corner as much as I'd be with a #1 Safety....

Dunta is a good tackler coming from the corner back position...totally different than coming down hill and making a stick...

If a running back were to break, with D-rob at FS his eyes would light up because at that moment he'd realize he was about to make a highlight reel type of truck move because he'd be running straight down hill at THE smallest FS in the leauge....

I'll pass on that notion...

I still say the best way to fix the secondary is get some sort of consistent pass rush going. DBs don't have to be great if teh opposing Qb is under pressure, or better yet sacked.

I agree with that. I guess I thought it was obvious he'd need to bulk up a bit. I'd also have to say DR is one of our hardest hitters, period. Pound-for-pound or otherwise. A TE across the middle might be more of a threat than a RB just because they're so huge anyway.

I wouldn't be so sure that Dunta hits the hardest on the team...He might have the most explosion when trying to dive into a defender, but I really doubt he's the hardest hitter...

Yeah, that's debatable, but I'm not talking about diving tackles. That dude put some slobberknockers on some guys. I've heard several announcers comment on it the last 2 yrs. He brings a big stick. That's what got me to thinking about FS for him. And I said ONE of the hardest hitters. Not THE hardest hitter. :)

imo let's quit moving DE to LB and trying to make tackle out of guards. DR did very well his first year. Call it the sophomore wall or not having the stabilizing voice of A. Glenn, DRob could have had a better year. I think a Nate Clements on opposite side would be a +. I expect Mario and Weaver to be better. Travis Johnson if I recall correctly was coming on before he got hurt and Dalton and Anthony Maddox looked good for pick ups. Babin and Peek need to turn it up (if Peek is resigned). A healthy Alfred Malone and Seth Payne may improve the line. Not sure if Payne will stick in 07.

dunta is too small to play FS. what i meant by smother was staying in the grill of a reciever. his ability to lock up would be wasted if he was just patrolling.

i think glenn earl is the hardest hitter on the defense. pound for pound, he packs a wallop. i remember the strong safety we used to have, eric brown. that dude hit like a mutha. i remember a preseason game vs the broncos where he just laid some guy out and made my jaw drop. matt stevens made a good hit too in second to last game of the 2002 season vs the redskins that i really liked.

BINGO!

I'd think we'll see more players being brought in for CB and safety, as these are obvious needs on this team right now. I'd be surprised, though, if we find someone better than D.Rob. Teams hold on to their cover guys for the most part.

We can't even consider moving Dunta at FS. Then our #1 CB would be Petey. And most of us are hoping for a new CB because Petey is not a solid #2 CB. If we go sign two playmakers at CB then we can consider moving him to FS, but we can't afford to move him any where until we have more talent at CB.

yeah thats why i have said from the beginning: draft the best DT available and start him next to a healthy mario williams, and badabing, mario can take less double teams and the QB cant sit in a rocker or else he will be rocked by :mario:

petey is probably a good nickel at best. he needs to cut down on foolish mistakes (penalties). same can be said for cc brown.

I expect the Texans to go after Clements. If not him, another defensive back to help back there. Defensive secondary is still the weakest part of the team - something has to be done.

Robinson is a fine corner, but he's had very little help in the secondary since AG and Coleman were at CB and FS. Robinson has very good recovery speed, he has very fluid hips, great speed, and he's a good tackler from the corner spot. He has had no help over the top, so that's affected how he's had to play. He's had no help across so that affects how things transpire in the secondary as well. Things like crossing patterns aren't picked up well by this secondary and responsibility transitions are not handled well either. From a physical talent standpoint, Robinson could easily be a top-10 CB in this league if he just had a little help.

I hear everybody talking about signing Clements. I don't know what I would do if that happend but I'd be pretty friggin excited! Unfortunately I just dont see us giving him enough to come here. Every team will be going hard after him and Even Asanti Samuel. My ideal scenario would be grabbing one of them....and then getting FS with our #8.

But, what do y'all think teams are going to be doing for a FA FS? I think Ken Hamlin will be a free agent if i'm not mistaken. Are there any guys worth looking at to bring in to be our starting FS? if thats the case we can draft the best CB in the draft, trade down and get one, or go another route with our #1. FS is a huge need in my book...either through FA or our 1st rd pick.

But I think it would be easier to sign a FS in FA to start for us than actually getting Clements.

There are a hand full of potentially elite CBs out there. Arkansas ran a lot of man up and thier Junior just declaired. Cedrick Houston. He might be there at the 2.7. I'm not really thrilled with the two free saftey prospects. And Revis is a speed deamond but he plays small to me. Hall is the safest dungy tampa two guy. But he would be a liablity in what Richard Smith was tring to do with the pressure schemes. The reason it is an acute problem is that we've got a day two tallent guy manning one of the corners. May be up grade that tallent and the free saftey is not such a sore spot. Add a disruptive figure on defense in the first...maybe the problem goes away.

I like Faggins a lot. He doesn't have elite tallent but he plays very hard and he is an asset in the club house. The reality of the cap is...they all can't be day one guys. It'd be nice, but you've got to have a few Pettie's on the roster. He gave up some plays, but considering where he was drafted, he over acheives. Just can't have two weak guys playing next to each other. No support from FS...petie gets exposed. One of the two needs to be upgraded.

TBS....If Braum falls or they fall in Love with Ginn Jr..., I don't think it makes sense. But I'm not the offensive guru.
