New Man Love for Jamaal Anderson

Texian

Hall of Fame
Like YTF and Kiper I am locked in on one player except mine is Jamaal Anderson now that he has declared. Did you see what this kid did his bowl game? 5 TFLs and 3 sacks against the Wisconsin OLT. Holy Smokes. At 6'6" and 280#s he is quick and disruptive. 19.5 TFLs and 13.5 sacks this year and that's playing in the SEC. Played WR in HS, also played BB and track. You gotta love him!

Did he really get 5 sacks against Joe Thomas? If so, I wonder fo Thomas' stock is gonna fall.

Since he's coming out ... he can now be ranked .

He's 2nd beneath Gaines Adams ... Charles Johnson is 4th according to Scott Wright .

That is 4 pretty stout DEs in this draft.
I rank 'em 1.Anderson 2.Johnson 3.Adams 4.Moses
It will be interesting to see how they all perform at the combine and that will probably shake them out. Adams & Moses have the Senior Bowl.

Know nothing about him... saw he was an exceptional WR in high school, was an excellent basketball player, and did track and field. Anybody have a scout on him? The size/skillset sounds like a Peppers type, not like a Mario/Reggie White type. If he is a Taylor/Peppers type pass rusher/disruptor he'd be a great but gutsy pick for HOU. His stats make the case that he's a pretty active guy with a good motor... exactly what we need.

I for one would be happy if we went and got us one of these guys.... You can't beat pressure from the front four.. leads to all sorts of good things happening.

For all those guys that were anti-Mario would another DE pick make their heads explode??

I was pro-Mario all the way last year and would not like us to draft a DLineman in the 1st round. I haven't seen any yet that wow me enough to use the #8 pick and I think we have much more drastic needs, specifically in the secondary. However, if one of these guys grades out high enough and is their best-rated player at #8 then I trust their decision to draft them there, but at this point I don't overly like the idea.

I like the guy too. I wouldn't spend a first rounder on him because of our recent draftts, but he is a talent. I've watched him all season.

2 things that jumped out at me without having seen him play, or at least paying attention to him while watching arkansas. everyone knows that B-ball players are the most athletic players. Gates, Gonzalez, Peppers, Mcnabb.............. VY, TO etc.

For all those guys that were anti-Mario would another DE pick make their heads explode??

Not necessarily but it does underscore the point that EVERY YEAR there are "game changing" defensive ends available. But every year, Vince Young is not available. So if we'd passed on Mario last year, there are several guys this year who are just about as good, and don't require the first pick in the draft

Thank You Very Much,

This is what I was afraid of, Jamaal Anderson could be gone by #8. I saw on Sports Center where Kiper now has Anderson listed as the #5 player on his board.

anderson had a good game, but it wasn't against joe thomas. he was on the RT all day, vandenheuvel.

I went back and read some pre game match ups and they read Anderson matching up agaisnt Thomas. I saw a few highlights and Anderson indeed was lined up on the right side against Thomas.

no...he was never once over thomas. not once. arkansas is smarter than that.

You will just have watch it for yourself, it there for you to see. The right side is Anderson natural position and Hogs have other good players in Jackson and Robinson.

About Arkansas smarts, it doesn't make sense to make your Right DE play from the leftside the whole game and vice versa. Jackson and Robinson are no slouches.

well, all i can show you now is this:

http://www.madison.com/wsj/mad/sports/index.php?ntid=113255
Arkansas had a decided edge with junior end Jamaal Anderson, who came in leading the Southeastern Conference with 11 sacks, lined up over right tackle Eric Vanden Heuvel. Anderson led the way with three sacks and four quarterback hurries.

"He played me a lot differently than I thought coming in," Vanden Heuvel said. "In every game before, he played a lot more to the outside. This game, he really came into me a lot more on every single play. He's a big guy, very athletic. He's just a train."
the article also points out that the only member of the badgers' o-line to be play at a high level was thomas.

keep in mind that Ark used a 5 man D line in that game. while I'm not taking anything away from his game, he had an extra guy on the line so the O line couldnt double him.

I posted this before. Its interesting that Arks defensive coordinator is Reggie Herring. He took NC States defense from one of the WORST in the country and made it top 5 with guys like Mario Williams and McCargo. He and d line coach Tracy Rocker (ex Auburn) have made stars out of those D linemen. The system uses press coverage and lets the d line get after the qb. Herring, IMO, will be a defensive coordinator in the NFL soon (or a head coach in college).

wanted to give you props and respond to your thread & not start another but this could very likely be the route the Texans go. here is why-

excellent size 6-6 274, will play his first NFL season age 21, led the SEC in sacks & is also good in run support, so I'm thinking instead of RDE use him on the strongside, LDE in run support? with his speed he'll still apply pressure to the QB & how are teams going to be able to double team him with Mario on the other side? this would free up Mario to play the position he was drafted @ RDE excell & be the defensive playmaker everyone is hoping for. a healthy Mario, with NFL experience under his belt & weapon @ the other end could be plain flat dominant.

by drafting another big DE who could play LDE would allow the Texans to move Weaver (w/100% recovery from shoulder surgery) inside to tackle rotating with Payne & TJ. instead of re-signing UFA Peek to a big contract the Texans could free up cap space to pursue other needs like CB/LT/QB.
I understand this would put alot of pressure on Jamaal to produce early (seems like DL need one year to adjust to speed & power of NFL) but pending private workout & interview he could pass the test with flying colors. this move could conceivably help the Texans address multiple needs while significantly upgrading the Texans long term prospects :texflag:

have four months to go & while I'm not signing off any type of man-love crushes just yet I would say you could definitely be on to something :bowser:

I'm not sure if anyone from the Texans ever actually read this message board, but feel free to e-mail Rick Smith or call in talk radio when he's on & ask him what he thinks of Jaamal Anderson & what his NFL prospects are :)

That all makes sense except Mario is a LDE (strongside) and Anderson is a RDE (weakside). However, that dosnt really change the rest of your argument, and it would be nice to get Weaver inside and have another able pass rusher on the opposite side of Mario.

understand this- they would be interchangeable Smith/Defensive Coordinator could game plan & effectively take away a teams best tackle & stop the running game & give the QB less time to throw. Jamaal has the size & abiltiy to stop the run as well & could play LDE too. With only Mario the Texans still lack a effective, consistant pass rush (double team the heck out of Mario) this would fix that problem & solidfy the DL, open up lanes for pass rushing LB's & DB's :bowser:

Wow, I just saw this thread... I posted in another thread that I thought Jamaal Anderson played head-up against Joe Thomas in the Capital One Bowl. Can't remember where I read that....

Whatever, he's a good'un... :ok:

With all these highly-rated juniors coming out, the top ten picks are getting awfully crowded.... There will definitely be a quality pick @ #8....

I thought so to but Kastofsna had to straighten me out on that one. Anderson lined up over the RT, see Kast's earlier link in this thread.

This is what I was afraid of, Jamaal Anderson could be gone by #8. I saw on Sports Center where Kiper now has Anderson listed as the #5 player on his board.

Every underclassman that declares and gets drafted between #1 and #7 means that there will be more quality and a better group of players for the Texans to choose from, and also improves the quality of players available later in the round if we're able to trade down a few spots.

I have to say, I have a problem with the idea of drafting yet another defensive end in the first round. Not because of any problem I have with Jamaal Anderson (too many As) nor because of any lack of trust in the FO. If they feel he's worth it, they'll take him, and I'll cheer for him. I just think that if the FO doesn't either get a LT or a FS, they're kidding themselves (unless they've shored these positions up through FA). There appear to be one or two incredible specimens at FS (Landry and the Florida guy whose name I forget) and there's always Joe Thomas. I can honestly, without any kidding, see us moving up if he's available when we can move up. This team has just been attrocious at Left Tackle, one year aside, and if they can improve there, they will. I just don't see Defensive End being a big priority in the first round.

while having Thomas would be my #1 choice, I dont think we are in a position to be moving UP in the draft. there are some other quality LT's available and we may be able to snag one in the 2nd round.

FS doesnt seem to be a position that most gm's would spend a top 10 pick on UNLESS its a cant miss guy like Roy (I couldnt cover my grandfather) Williams.

After last years draft, I dont care what position they draft this year as long as they keep up the good work.

Honestly I just cant see us taking Jamal Anderson in the first round unless a number of other prospects are not there. The DLine is ok, but we lack speed rusher/situational rusher that can stay healthy. Now I think Peek and Orr could accomplish the goal, but why not grab a guy like Ikaika Alma-Francis in the 4th or 5th. He is small, but he is 6-5 and is a good pass rusher.

Honor is due.

On the one hand you missed on Jamal Anderson. On the other you're the first one who posted Mitch Petrus' name. He just benched forty five reps. Which is the best since 2000.

NDIANAPOLIS – When the big fellas hit the bench, it’s one of the best shows of the combine. And Arkansas OL Mitch Petrus put on the biggest show Friday, tieing a combine record (since 2000) with 45 repetitions.

Petrus put up the most by an offensive linemen and tied the overall combine record (both since 2000) with his performance, which was on par with Ohio State DE Mike Kudla (2006) and UTEP DT Leif Larsen (2000).

The rest of the top five included Oklahoma State’s Russell Okung (38), Notre Dame’s Eric Olsen (35), UNLV’s Joe Hawley (35) and Maryland’s Bruce Campbell (34). In all, nine linemen put up over 30 repetitions.

Keep in mind these results are unofficial.

Three players did not participate in the bench due to injuries - Florida’s Maurkice Pouncy, Alabama’s Mike Johnson and John Jerry of Ole Miss.

This great weightlifting achievement means that Petrus will likely have an equally great NFL career as Kudla & Larsen.

it's provocative to think about past choices teams make & the how it affects a players development going forward. nice to see some old footage of oneself in heat of the battle too. As I recall the Texans flipped picks with Atlanta but essentially flipped prospects, on my board anyway. had them selecting Amobi & us taking Anderson.

Anderson would effectively negated aquireing Antonio Smith, maybe Barwin too. Would be much more effective opposite Mario than he has been in Atlanta. Just a reflection looking back, totally missed on Revis & knew with DeMeco that they would pass on Willis (not saying it was right but ya just kinda knew they would).

You make some good points. I was on the "draft Jamaal Anderson" bandwagon partially because Mario started coming into his own and my initial thought process is having two elite bookends would wreck havoc. But last season I was looking at his stats and the Falcons message board and they already labeled him a B-U-S-T. I don't know if he would have done much better with Mario considering that he has John Abraham right now (16.5 sacks on 2008).

Lesson learned, be weary of collegiate players posting big numbers for only one season.

I'll go out on a limb and say he'll have a better career than both of those players put together.

yep agreed. the guy is in the Texans' wheel house. We'll see how he does today in the drills. If he's an athlete, he fits to . SEC guard. Good weight good push. There not going to stand pat at the guard spot.

You forgot Richie Icongito there Lucky. However in Icognito's case it's more of the temper than the fact he's a gym rat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richie_Incognito

You forgot Richie Icongito there Lucky.
What does Incognito have to do with anything? My point was that setting the bench press record means squat in regards to a NFL career. See the previous record holders' "success" in pro football.

I got it lucky. However, I don't see the NFL guys drafting a bunch of o-lineman high who can't make twenty eight reps at 225 either ?

And as I recall old Richie lifted very well when he came out.

D'Brickashaw Ferguson didn't get 28 reps at the combine. Neither did Ryan Clady. Didn't stop these guys from getting picked in the 1st round or have a productive career.

I'm not suggesting the NFL should draft 90 lb weaklings (apologies to all the 90 lb weaklings out there). An O-lineman needs functional strength. Just that setting a bench press record has no bearing on a successful NFL career, in of itself.
