no more weaver? he seems to be the only one still healty and consistant one on our D line.

i think we should keep babin, he has the most sacks on our team and is a good back up, at DE. he does have some nice spin moves when he pass rushes. dont know abt peek much, i think if they move him back to LB then maybe.

Good question. The biggest area of concern is the secondary.

Secondary - We really need to add another corner and a free safety. Faggins is a nice nickel back, but he has no business starting. We really have two strong safeties in Earl and Brown, so they could duke it out for that spot. Robinson and the winner of Earl and Brown should start along with two new guys.

Linebackers - Ryans is entrenched as our MLB for the foreseeable future. Greenwood has done well enough to stick around as our weakside backer. Orr is a liability as a SLB. I don't know if he will be back in any capacity or not. I'd love to see us add someone like Briggs (Chicago).

D-line - The team drafted Mario to be more of a RDE, but I view him as our LDE of the future. Weaver is versatile and can play DE or DT. After that it really is up in the air. Travis Johnson has underperformed. Babin and Peek are situational rushers. Guys like Payne, Thomas Johnson, Maddox, Dalton, etc. will have be evaluated. Kalu is versatile and has some rushing skills, but is primarily a backup. We definitely need more talent here, but with so many needs can we even get around to the d-line?

we basically need to do 4 things

1. get a proven CB, im thinking clements or samuel
2. get a coverage S, im thinking a rookie or moving Dunta
3. find a replacement for Orr, im thinking thomas or briggs
4. a strong DT that can regurarly collapse the pocket, im thinking Sands or a stud rookie.

these are the 4 most important aquisitions on defense this offseason.
maybe 2 rookies and 2 FA's

SLB Willis
FS Merriweather

I don't think Patrick Willis makes it to the second round this year. The LB class isn't anywhere near as strong as last years, so the DeMeco scenario isn't as likely.

Are you thinking the character stuff drops Merriweather to the 3rd? I suppose that's possible, but usually 1st round talent with character problems get taken by "rogue" teams in the 2nd.

...and the Texans avoid players with "character" issues, so...

Safety/cornerback and linebacker are the two biggest needs on defense. I wonder if this will be the first and second round picks just because Kubiak took offensive players later in the draft last year.

My best guess on our current defensive players:
DL
Mario Williams - obviously still here
Anthony Weaver - obviously still here
Antwan Peek - likely still here for pass rush specialist and special teams
Jason Babin - likely still here for decent depth
ND Kalu - probably still here, can play all 4 positions along the line decently well
Thomas Johnson - has earned a training camp roster spot, will compete for final spot from there
Anthony Maddox - has earned a training camp roster spot, will compete for final spot from there
Lional Dalton - has maybe earned a training camp roster spot, will compete for final spot from there
Cedric Killings - won't be here
Travis Johnson - I don't see him being here
Seth Payne - should be here
Alfred Malone - should be here at least thru training camp
Tim Bulman - no
Earl Cochran - no

LB
DeMeco Ryans - obviously still here
Morlon Greenwood - likely still here as he's played better lately, if he can't win a starting spot he'll be gone though - too expensive to be a backup
Shantee Orr - should be here as a pass rusher on passing downs and for special teams
Kailee Wong - I wouldn't count on it, he's getting old and is expensive
Charlie Anderson - maybe, I wouldn't bet on it though
DaShon Polk - don't see him being here
Troy Evans - may be here on work ethic and special teams contribution
Wali Rainer - probably still around at least thru training camp

DB
Dunta Robinson - obviously still here
Demarcus Faggins - will still be here, hopefully as our nickelback after we bring in a better starter
Dexter McCleon - hopefully won't be here, I have to believe they'll bring in enough better CBs to bump him off the roster by the end of training camp
Dexter Wynn - could likely be here as an emergency DB and a PR
Von Hutchins - not likely
CC Brown - will be here, hopefully not starting anymore
Glenn Earl - will be here, likely still as a starter
Jason Simmons - might be here, hopefully will not have to play
Michael Stone - won't be here
John Walker - should be here, maybe finally see some PT
Chris McKenzie - will be here thru camp, likely make final roster
Lewis Sanders - has at least earned a training camp spot, hopefully we'll have enough good CBs to bump him off the final roster

I agree with your post but Kubes thought in training camp that Pbuc & DR could keep pressure off safeties. If we get a starting corner in draft (2nd) or Clemmons F/A safeties may no longer be under a spot light. I see Travis Johnson making team but also f/a tackle or mid round draft pick to support line.

Jerek, good breakdown, and I agree with most of it. The things I might change would be:
DE- Williams, Weaver, Babin, Kalu (although he is getting old), and try to trade Peek for a draft pick or 2. I just don't think he's done much this year.

DT- Thomas Johnson, Maddox, Dalton, Malone. I don't think Payne will be back from his injury and he's getting old. As for Travis Johnson, again, I would try to trade him if anybody would take him. If not let him come back and try for a spot. At that point we don't have anything left to lose.

LB-Ryans, Greenwood, Anderson, Evans, maybe Orr. I would like to see us get a SLB in FA or draft to start with Ryans and Greenwood. Keep the other 3 as backups/ST.

CB-Robinson, Faggins, maybe McKenzie and maybe Wynn for backup CB/PR. This is another area where I'd like to see a FA pickup or draft pick. We'd have to throw a boat load of money out there just to have a chance to get one of the top FA's. Don't know if they have enough and are willing to pay it!

S- Earl, Brown, maybe Walker and Sanders. This is another area that needs some help in FA or the draft. Earl is probably the only legit starter on the team.

Bottom line, if we can get a good SLB, another good CB, and another good S in FA and/or the draft, I think we could have a great defense. Problem is we have so many holes to fill I just don't think it can be done during this coming FA and draft. We'll see. JMHO!

I like the fact that someone else see's that Patrick Willis could be a great addition to this team. I'm really hoping that we get him in the 2nd rd if he is available. Diamond in the ruff, like Ryans was. Hamlin at safety is great to or Merriweather thru draft is good. Samuels, Clements, Briggs are all going to try and break the bank to come and play here, just don't be so suprised if we don't get nan-one. Might not be a bad thing, tho.
