qb: damon huard, i think he could be a decent starter while a younger qb develops.

rb: michael turner, a no brainer, could easily be a starter anywhere he went, though he is a rfa. ahman green could be a temporay fix but he's 30 and has injury problems. chris brown and buckhalter might be options or starter and shipp could be a solid back up.

wr: none really

ol: leonard davis or mike gandy, both would be solid help for the oline.

dl: vonnie holliday for dl expeerience or terrell sands for his size.

lb: adalius thomas first, followed by briggs and june. to a lesser extent, na'ill diggs. flethcher would be nice but he's getting up there in years. a nice sleeper might be kawika mitchell.

db: clements would most likely be expensive and samuel could get serious offers, i'd like either really. ken hamlin would be great at safety. a few other names to toss out at cb, nick harper, david macklin, and safety, deon grant, michael lewis, tony parrish.

looking at these names the texans could build a GREAT defense with a few key signings and solid draft selections and the offense could be decent and respectable as well.

i'd go for clements or thomas. thomas and dymecco would be great

although vonnie holiday is old, i wouldn't mind having him lining up next to mario unless there's another talented dlinemen on FA. mario in my opinion will not be able to put up the sack numbers that he's capable of unless there's another talented player on our dline. he can't do it all on his own.

turner sounds good but i'd prefer we go for adrian peterson, he's a tough runner and he atleast could add excitement to this offense of ours.

The problem is, this is just a Christmas wish list. If we got any of these players the price of draft picks would be too high and that makes them unaffordable...

first off i would like to say i am no way a longhorn fan. that said is chris simms a free agent this offseason? i believe he only signed a one year deal in tampa. he always seemed like a good leader and a decent arm.

In this order

Clements (would really solidify the secondary)
Turner (may cost too much he is a RFA)
Briggs (not sure he will be leaving Chicago)

El Tejano

Hall of Fame
Go for Michael Turner and Clements. If you get either one of them you don't have to get one in the draft as a first day pick and you can use those first day picks for offensive lineman.

It goes in ascending order, top choices at the top. We wont even get close to getting most of these guys, but if we can land afew and a combination, we should be well off. For example, if we can get Betts, Womack, Scott, and Hamlin, I would be ecstatic. This offseason will be crucial, show us what you've got Rick Smith!

RB
Ladell Betts, WAS
Correll Buckhalter, PHI
Dominic Rhodes, IND

OL
David Diehl, NYG
Eric Steinbach, CIN
Flloyd Womack, SEA
Shaun O'Hara, NYG

DT
Terdell Sands, OAK
Ian Scott, CHI

LB
Lance Briggs, CHI
Cato June, IND
London Fletcher-Baker, BUF
Shawn Barber, PHI
Demorrio Williams, ATL*

CB
Asante Samuel, NE
Nate Clements, BUF
Ricky Manning Jr, CHI

How do we get Brady Quinn? I think he is a top three pick.
Brady Quinn is not an option for us.

Detroit
Oakland
Tampa

All are ahead of us and all need quarterbacks.

I don't think Brady is a bonafide stud #1 pick. He is not real big and has not really performed real well against better competition. His gaudy stats are aided by winning the Commander-in-Chief trophy beating Army, Air Force and Navy this year. (They found out late that they couldn't play the Salvation Army, because they don't field a team yet...maybe in 2010!).

Adrian Peterson or Joe Thomas will be the guy there where we draft. Seeings how our offense is devoid of explosive playmakers, I'd vote for Peterson, but not be devastated with Thomas. Turner would be the guy to pursue in the offseason if we can.

Not sure what the prognosis is with DD, but we need an explosive back.

Kolb would be a nice pick in the fourth round or so. He could be the guy to groom for the future. I don't think going high in the draft with a quarterback is the answer to our problems that need to be addressed at a ton of other positions....

OL, SS, FS, RB... the list goes on.

I agree with you with drafting adrian peterson or joe thomas i would be happy with either one of those ideas but like i said before i think troy smith is a solid 2nd draft pick i was watching the tv the other day and even charley casserly said he would be picked in the 3rd round but how could we believe in anything that guy say

We can't get Michael Turner! He's an RFA... he would cost us a number one pick. If we're going to spend a number one pick on a RB, then we should just draft one.

I'd like to go after a solid but affordable FS, then spend big money on either an OLB or CB: Clements, ASamuel, Briggs, AThomas...

Stay away from Leonard Davis but sign more athletic OLine depth.

In the draft, take BPA!

Coach I hope you're right about this. If Thomas is there when we pick I think we need to get him. Even if Peterson is still there! I'm just not sold on Peterson's durability, and I sure would hate to get him for only a few seasons and then he has a career ending injury. I know it could happen to anyone we get, I just think he is too big of a risk. My only question at this point is do any of those teams picking ahead of us need O-linemen? If they do, Thomas is probably gone! JMHO!

As for the original question about FA, I would like to see the team make a run at Samuels, Clements and Hamlin at the DB position and Briggs or Thomas at the OLB position. Who knows, maybe we could land one or two of these. One can only hope!

qb: damon huard, i think he could be a decent starter while a younger qb develops.

I don't really like Huard. IF we're going to draft a QB fairly high and plan for them to be our future, then either leave David Carr or Sage Rosenfels as our stop-gap QB, no reason to bring in another guy.

rb: michael turner, a no brainer, could easily be a starter anywhere he went, though he is a rfa. ahman green could be a temporay fix but he's 30 and has injury problems. chris brown and buckhalter might be options or starter and shipp could be a solid back up.

Turner would be a decent option but you'd have to give up a draft pick for him, assuming the Chargers don't match the offer sheet. None of the other guys you mentioned make much sense, either get someone who is capable of being a true #1 everydown back right now, draft a guy pretty high like Adrian Peterson, or give Lundy/Dayne/Taylor/Gado one more year with McFadden or Slaton as a draft plan next year if things don't work out again. We don't need to add more marginal veterans, although we do need an upgrade at RB.

wr: none really

Agreed, WR isn't much of a need for us right now, maybe look to draft one to be our future #2 when Moulds retires, but we don't need to look for one in free agency.

ol: leonard davis or mike gandy, both would be solid help for the oline.

Leonard Davis is about the exact opposite of a ZBS lineman. I like him a lot as a player, but not for us. I'm not real fond of Mike Gandy either. I've heard Eric Steinbach (OG from the Bengals) is scheduled to be a free agent, if he hits the open market I'd consider making a decent run at him. Outside of him I'm not aware of any other OLinemen that I'd go after.

dl: vonnie holliday for dl expeerience or terrell sands for his size.

Don't see much point in Holliday. We need an upgrade at DT somewhere. Payne is still solid when healthy, but Travis Johnson has been lousy and will likely be replaced. Thomas Johnson, Dalton, and Maddox have played fairly well but aren't long-term starters. We need to either 1) move Weaver inside to DT permanently and bring in a DE that is more athletic than Weaver and can get a better pass rush off the edge while being able to stand up to the run better than Peek and Babin. or 2) decide to leave Weaver at DE and bring in another sturdy DT that is strong, athletic, and active that can stop the run like our current trio is doing while also being able to push the pocket in pass rush. My preference is option #1, whether we accomplish that in free agency or the draft is up to the FO.

lb: adalius thomas first, followed by briggs and june. to a lesser extent, na'ill diggs. flethcher would be nice but he's getting up there in years. a nice sleeper might be kawika mitchell.

I like the idea of bringing in Lance Briggs, and it sounds like he intends to test the market. Whether we can lure him to Houston and how much that would cost us is a completely different story. Thomas would be another option too and would bring some versatility to our defense, although he is getting older and will probably get some pretty hefty offers. Briggs would probably be a better long-term investment. I don't like Cato June, he is a weakside LB that we already have a servicable one in Greenwood, we need a strongside LB more than a weakside. Your other options are ok but all getting older, I'd prefer to go with some younger vets or another rookie.

db: clements would most likely be expensive and samuel could get serious offers, i'd like either really. ken hamlin would be great at safety. a few other names to toss out at cb, nick harper, david macklin, and safety, deon grant, michael lewis, tony parrish.

I would not mind Clements at all, I think he'd be a great fit with Dunta, although he will likely be expensive and may be tired of being on losing teams, not as fond of Asante Samuel but he'd be an option too. I think Nick Harper is better suited for a cover 2 system like he's in, Macklin would be ok. I'm not as fond of Ken Hamlin although I'd like to see a FS that can cover someone. Deon Grant and Lewis would also be upgrades over what we have but probably not enough to warrant the money it would likely take to bring them here.

looking at these names the texans could build a GREAT defense with a few key signings and solid draft selections and the offense could be decent and respectable as well.
I agree with you, I think with a couple key additions to our defense that it could be a really good unit. If we can get a great CB (Clements is my preference), a SLB (Briggs is my preference), a better FS (there are several ones in the draft so I'd be content looking there) and then upgrade our depth at all positions I think we could have a very good defense core several years. I think a big upgrade at RB, probably only one new starter on the OLine, then better depth on the line and maybe a new QB I think our offense will be much improved.

Any free agents we get will have to have a local connection or we will have to overpay for. Even then, we probably won't be in the market for the best free agents because of two reasons. First, they usually end up staying with their current team. Second, most top free agents that leave their teams will want to play for a team they perceive to be a winner. That will not be the Texans this offseason. There are three other teams in our division that will be more likely to pull in top free agents.

I can tell you with all certainty, if the Cardinals pick ahead of Houston, Joe Thomas will be coming to the Desert. Also, if the Raiders lose out on Quinn, likelihood is they take a long look at Thomas themselves.

Also, as for Davis, he MIGHT not be such a bad option, however if I'm Houston I sign him purely as a guard. He's much better suited for the guard position, and dare I say, could be DOMINANT there if inserted at the position.

My ideal 2007 Post-Season in a nutshell..

1. Sign Jordan Black

-- He's a good run blocker and has done very well blocking the blindside of Trent Green and Damon Huard's blindside. He'll come cheaper than the others, is young and can be a valued addition to the Texan o-line.

2. Sign Michael Lewis

-- He's young, productive and is a Houston native. His stock is down in Philadelphia, but a change of scenery may do him some good. He's a good tackler who could do well in Houston's defense. Basically, he's not a guy you build a secondary around, but on the flipside he'd be a big upgrade at Safety.

3. Sign Ken Hamlin

-- Now, here's a guy who defines "shut down corner" role. He's another who will get a ton of tackles, and who teams don't neccessarily throw on. He and Dunta will be the aces of that secondary for years to come.

And draftwise.. Keep in mind, these are ideal situations..

1) Call Chicago and see what their asking price for Benson is. If they're willing to take a second, or a third and conditional first (based on Benson starting the entire 16 games for Houston and reaching 1,000 yards and 10 + TD), I'd bite in a second. I think with Jones tied down and more suitable for their offense, Benson could be had for the right price. A second rounder could do the trick, but if not, offer the third and conditional first.

2) Subsequently, contact the Cardinals and see what their asking price for Kurt Warner is. On a one year contract (Warner's got two left on the deal Arizona signed him to last post-season, but with his stock low, he might be forced to take a cut in salary and the Texans could get him for a year cheap). If this doesn't work, see what Minnesota wants for Brad Johnson. If both of these fail, sign Gus Ferrotte cheap.

3) Take the best of the available QBs with their draft picks (Smith, Quinn -- if he falls, Russell or Brohm).

This allows the Texans to have a vet starter, grooming a young QB for a year or two and also gets them a potential 1000 yard back, who will give them their 10-15 TDs a year. He's also got Texas ties, and is still regarded highly by the Longhorn faithful, so this could eliminate some of the stank left over on the team's passing of Young.

Thoughts?

The one of the corners are the best we could hope for. 14.5 mill available for free agents and your draft picks... That's not a lot.

Like the defnsive guys you've got up there...so will everyone else. Do you really want to get in another bidding war for ....Gary Walker ? Denver's d line is tanking at the end of the season for a reason. Anything over 26, I'm not interested in. Been there done that, got the dead cap money to prove it.

I can't believe people are actually suggesting trading for Kurt Warner :marionaner: are you guys insane?! He is injury prone and washed up and you want to give away picks for him with the record he posted in Arizona? Man things must be bad for you guys. Damon Huard and Jeff Garcia are surely better options

FYI. Ken Hamlin is a seafty not a "shutdown corner"

A guy nobody has mentioned is Vince Manuwai of the Jaguars. He is a powerful young guard who seems to be getting better every year and is an UFA. Would be a great pick up
