Texans Decimated by Injuries in 2006

This season has been far from perfect, but I've been pleased with the team's obvious progress. Would I like to have won more games? Of course, but the team is quite a bit better than last season and getting better.

One thing that has been overlooked is that the Texans have been afflicted by more injuries to key players than most other NFL teams. In the December 11 issue of Pro Football Weekly, the publication conducted its annual breakdown of injuries and ranked the extent to which each team has been hurt by injuries.

Houston was #3 on the list, behind only Philadelphia (which has lost McNabb and Kearse) and the NY Giants. Earlier in the season, after the Texans beat the Jaguars, Rich Lord and others denigrated the team's victory by arguing that the Jags had been depleted by injuries. On the PFW list, the Jaguars are #8.

In case you're wondering, the Cowboys rank last, losing only Greg Ellis to a season ending injury. Tennessee is #29 on the list.

I don't have a link. I'm getting this from the print edition (with Tony Romo on the cover) and didn't see the article on PFW's website after a cursory search.

The future is looking very bright to these eyes, and I'm hanging on to my PSL's! :marionaner:

We've lost a lot of starters, sure, but those players would have been backups anywhere else. There isn't to omuch fallout from Wiegart to Winston or from TJ to Thomas Johnson to whoever is there now.

We've lost a lot of players, but blaming our embarassing plays on that is copping outin my opinion. Play the hand you're given and don't make excuses. Both NYG and Philly are right in the middle of the playoff hunt

Domanick Davis, Mike Flanagan, Seth Payne and Charles Spencer could start for a lot of teams.

I'm not making excuses and there is plenty of room for improvement, but I think all of the relevant facts have to be considered--and these ARE relevant facts.

Davis is a legitmate thorn in our side this year, but he was never really healthy in the first place.

Flanagan and Payne weren't having great seasons before the injury.

Spencer was on the rise, and this one hurt doubly because its our cursed LT

He was expected back this year. Unfortunately, he was unwilling to play with pain/discomfort. It was a big loss to the team not to have its MVP from last season.

Flanagan and Payne weren't having great seasons before the injury.

I thought Payne was playing well. Flanagan wasn't playing as well as I expected him to, but he is an ex-Pro Bowler and a legitimate starter. I'm not sure Hodgdon is even backup quality, so losing Flanagan was a big loss.

Spencer was on the rise, and this one hurt doubly because its our cursed LT

The team expected him to become a star. Hopefully he can recover fully from his injury.

If you are able to peel back the emotions and take a true objective look at year over year growth this will be a consistent storyline and one that does provide an air of optimism given we were missing many impact players and many second stringers, situational guys or rookies got a lot of reps.

Missing Jerome Mathis for most of the year did not help either. I do believe that a healthy Davis, Mathis, and Spencer for the Texans leads to a whole other story for this season.

I am not going to use it as a excuse for or losing season , but it does factor in to it. What I think you have to look at is that we have installed new everything offense, defense, coach's,front office now factor in injury's. I have read countless remarks over the years how we do not have the depth if someone goes down for the year and we still do not. The one thing I have noticed is with all the injury's and the lack (but better than the years past) of depth we have been in what all but 2 maybe 3 games so that alone shows improvement. Here's a question we should debate why is it year after year at this time we seem to be in the top 5 in injury's. What do you all think can be done to prevent that nearly all the guy's we started with from getting injured to the point they miss the whole season? For all of you who do not think it does not play some kind of a role (injury's that is) than why are you complaining about our record if you think we start scrubs every week what does that make their backups?

Every team in the NFL has to deal with injuries....its part of the game. I hate fans that blame this on their teams downfall.

Its up to the coaches to create DEPTH, so when a man goes down the talent behind him picks it up like nothing happened.

And Ironically this is the FIRST YEAR of our new coaching scheme. We were 2-14 last year. Kubiak did the best he could to improve depth over the offseason...mainly in the lines. Yet, you can do only so much. Especially when our depth was probably one of the worst in the league to start with. Drafting linemen with 3 of our first 4 picks was a start.

BTW... I think the Titans won 4 or 5 games that year they lost 12 of 22 starters.

Amen Yeller. Building that "depth" is going to be another 3 or 4 year project for Kubiak and his crew......but I like the fact that he will be directing this. I think the team has shown promise and I believe things are only going to get better. Beside that, "How much lower can they go, right?" :twocents:

Cutting a viable left tackle who at best provided starting potential and at worst provided quality depth at a postion that is historically hard to fill negated a lot of that start.

I think you can see the fall off in Carr's play and inconsistent running as the season has progressed. Once again the O-line is devastated and it is taking its toll on the effectiveness of the team.

Didnt Wali Rainer and Sam Cowart get hurt.

Seth payne
Travis Johnson
K Wong
C Spencer
Z Wiegert
M Flanagan
D Davis
Jerome Mathis
Faggins for a while.

M Williams is playing injured.

We have had alot of injurys.

What if we could have traded down and got D'Brick instead of Mario, Bush and Young. We still could have Ryans, Spencer and Winston AND wouldn't be needing to take a OL in the next draft. But really, injuries are just part of the game and our backups need to step it up just like every other team.

Agreed but didn't quite a bit of depth leave when Capers let several veterans go in 2005 & Kubes cleaned out a bit too. Then add in the injuries this season. I am surprised we won 4. If we have a relatively healthy 2007 and pick up a few key players in 2007 draft and Free Agency, our depth will look much better. If we had to have major injuries, I'm glad it was in a year that realistically 6 wins was the probability.
