Defensive Game Plan

The Texans need to make sure that they don't make the same silly, stupid mistakes that Vince Young opponents make. The Giants made it, the Colts made it and the USC Trojans made it.

You cannot be afraid of your shadow and go into a shell. You ATTACK Vince Young and you ATTACK this offense. Sitting back and "spying" is just an idiotic concept and must be avoided at ALL COSTS! Why?

1.) You compromise the entire integrity of you defense when you spy. You are taking a defender off of a coverage responsibility, so you are opening up larger throwing lanes. Vince Young is NOT an accurate passer and needs room to throw. He can hit wide open receivers. You are doing him a favor when you lock someone on him and taking that guy out of coverage.

2.) Spying won't work anyway because you aren't going to catch him five yards deep. A spy is usually going to be a linebacker. Big deal... Vince breaks the pocket and now he is one-on-one with a linebacker in space. Advantage, offense.

3.) You are losing a potential rusher / blitzer to put pressure on the QB. No quarterback in the NFL operates at the highest of levels when they are pressured and you put people in their face. Young has constantly shown in both his college career and his pro career to throw balls up for grabs. He will chuck balls up for grabs. but if you don't put a clock on him and he can sit back there and find a place to run, you've got trouble.

4.) Just the very notion of incorporating a spy in the scheme changes you entire defense and the defensive philosophy. To paraphrase the immortal words of Dennis Green, "we are who we think we are!" You can't have an attacking defense that gets after people and then go into a shell and give in to people.

Game Plan Overview:
No one...and I do mean NO ONE has been able to run the football at Mario Williams for the past five or six weeks. The Raiders tried five times last week and went for four yards and two holding penalties. We build our rock and lay our foundation on Mario and go in with the philosophy that the Titans will not run the ball effectively to his side.

Having established that, we are going to bring pressure packages from the other side with Greenwood and Orr and even Babin rotating in at the weakside linebacker position. The key is that we are bringing five and six EVERY PLAY while occassionally blowing seven and eight.

The best look would be to have Mario working on the left tackle Michael Roos. This is Young's backside. So what you are creating are blitzes in Young's face from the outside in. This cuts off his favorite running lane which is running and scrambling to his right. For him to escape, he must go right and this is to his blindside and Mario Williams. Young is also not as quick going to his right, so this gives Williams the ability to keep Young to the inside easily as well.

Although Faggins has struggled, I am comfortable manning him up against Brandon Jones, Dunta draws Bennett and locks him down. This will give us the ability to bring one and sometimes two safeties down to do a number of things.

1.) Robber coverage. One or both of the safeties read the QB's eyes and jump the routes. By bringing pressure, you can force a young QB to telegraph his throws...which Young does a lot anyway. They are free to roam and read his eyes and get a pick.

2.) Blitz. Bringing safeties up generally means they will be unaccounted for. Wil help in the run game to stuff run lanes as well as in the pass game providing pressure and getting Young out of any comfort zone.

We must vary our fronts and coverages to keep him guessing. The bottom line missed in the defensive philosophies of those teams playing Young is that they have all had MAJOR success against him and the Titan offense. Where they have been hurt is at the end of the half, at the end of games and on third downs. Why? Because they go into a prevent mode and "play it safe". They get no pass rush whatsoever and enable Vince to run around and create. The FACT is he is creating something that ultimately is NOT there! Why spend 1st and 2nd down putting the Titans in a bad situation and then let the foot off of the proverbial throat by playing prevent and spying? Idiotic.

Compress the pocket with the defensive tackles being very disciplined in their passing lanes, bring pressure frontside and vary your looks in the secondary to confuse him and put VY in a nice little bow just into for the Christmas turkey...or as is the case in Tennessee, the Christmas squirrel!

Offensive Game Plan to come later tonight or early tomorrow.

GO TEXANS!
BEAT THE TITANS!

Sounds like a plan coach. I like to see the Texans pin their ears back and attack.

I hope your offensive plans includes the Texans running the ball....a lot.

Well, we have to control the clock, win the turnover battle, win the field position battle, and then thangs should pretty much take care of themselves...

We have to go out and give 110%! We have to swarm to the ball on defense. We have to quick and crisp with our plays on offense. The coaching staff is gonna have to step up and find weaknesses to exploit.

The 12th man will have to brought in to the game early and kept alive by good play on the field.

If we get all of that......

We might win the game.

Don't think so. DeMeco has plenty of speed and doesn't miss tackles

The play last week where the Colt just let VY run right by him because he was afraid of getting a roughing the passer penalty was a boneheaded play.

This isn't the NCAA, its the NFL, believe it or not there are people in this league that can bring Young down and DeMeco is one of them.

I just don't think Demeco would fall for the pump fake 5 yards past the line of scrimmage like alot of defenders would. Plus Demeco has the same kind of speed as VY.

Alright, a coachdent thread! :thumbup

I'll be so glad when this game is over so we can get past the hype, the divided loyalties, and regret to start talking football again.

I agree with you about putting a spy in VY. It opens up too big of a hole on our D. I was thinking about Mario on the outside today, as well, and came to the same hope that we'd pressure Young from the other side. Orr has been aggressive lately and really wanting to make plays, and Babin seems a bit hungrier, as well.

Richard Smith has to call an aggressive game and keep Young in the pocket. Make him beat us with his arm, where we've got a chance to tip the ball or pick him off. Once we can start a turnover battle, this might be enough to shake his confidence and put him in a position to force things. He's a great player, but still a rookie at the end of the day. If we can get to him early, maybe we can put footsteps in his head, too.

This is definately what we need to do. If you look at how Tampa played Mike Vick, you'll see that the way to beat a scrambling quarterback is to force him to throw by applying pressure. Basicaly, the longer the play goes, the more advantage the Titans have becaue VY can create. Bring pressure, make your tackles and dont try to do too much.

Tampa and Carolina beat Vick with containment, they don't let him outside the pocket. Ever since Peppers has shown up Carolina has owned Vick........Mario needs to take notes.

The only difference between Vick and Young though is Young is a better thrower, so you have to contain and cover. Blitz on 2nd and 3rd and longs.

i say mario and meco "the engineer" just take turns drop kicking vy all day, occassionally dunta will run up and drop him too. thatll be fun to watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mario2: :dance3:

Wrong move DB..... this is how Antwan gave up that touchdown run last time we played the Titans..... When Vince showed the handoff from the shotgun, Peek went after the RB...... Vince took the ball back and ran to the endzone. The weakside guy must see Vince as his responsibility.. if he gets into the backfield(because the line will block to the playside(like a good zoneBlockingTeam) to fool the weakside DE into thinking he's got a clear shot at the RB) he's got to go after Vince, and force Vince to give the ball up to the RB, who we had no problem stopping. The Texans have been playing good gap control for the most part........ The Titans run game isn't all that, if we concentrate on stopping that, we're halfway there.

But anyway..... Weaver, Babin, Mario, & Kalu played the weakside well. Peek failed us one time, but that's all it's going to take to get the Vince Rowdies going at Reliant.

Vince is more accurate than many give him credit for. He handles pressure much better than Vick..... But we can beat the Titans.
