Texans- Possible 1st Round Selections

Ole Miss Texan

Hall of Fame
I've compiled a list of players that the texans could conceivably draft in the 1st round in 2007. Behind each player is the number of times I saw them in the 1st round of mock drafts. The mock drafts were the appr. the first seven when I typed in 2007 NFL Mock draft on google. Listed are 39 players so we'll see who falls to the 2nd next year assuming the underclassmen declare... here goes..

RB
Adrian Peterson (7)
Kenny Irons (7)
Marshawn Lynch (6)
Michael Bush (1)

WR
Calvin Johnson (7)

OL*-one mock had not listed OL yet.
Justin Blalock (6)
Joe Thomas (6)
Levi Brown (5)
Sam Baker (4)
Jake Long(4)
Ryan Harris (2)
Doug Free (1)
Jarred Gaither (0)

DE
Gaines Adams (6)
Quentin Moses (6)
LaMarr Woodley (5)
Charles Johnson (1)

DT
Quinn Pitcock (7)
Alan Branch (6)
Frank Okam (3)
Demarcus Tyler (2)

LB
Patrick Willis (7)
Paul Posluszny (7)
Buster Davis (4)
Rufus Alexander (3)

CB
Leon Hall (6)
Daymeion Hughes (4)
Marcus McCauley (4)
Darrell Revis (3)
Antoine Cason (3)
Fred Bennet (3)

S
LaRon Landry (7)
Michael Griffin (6)
Brandon Meriweather (2)
Aaron Rouse (2)
Reggie Nelson (2)
Tom Zbikowski (1)
Eric Weddle (0)
John Wendling (0)

This list kind of scares me because it shows how many options Kubes has to go in the draft, whether it will be heavy offense or defense, could easily go either way. This may help in seeing at this point and totally speculating who may drop to the 2nd round. Here's to guessing ..:dangit:

Who would y'all want 1st/2nd round?

Forgot to add my pick...

Cornerback through FA

LaRon Landry in 1st.
Rufus Alexander in 2nd.

Or

Patrick Willis in 1st.
Reggie Nelson in 2nd?

I just hope not everyone gets mad when we go with an offensive Lineman.
Wouldn't bother me too much. Wouldn't mind like a Jared Gaither, Justin Blalock...take your pick of other top OL ..and then Michael Bush in 2nd. I'd kind of like to stick with a theme for the first two like we did for last year.

Heh, I just got off another MB after lighting their arses up for being ignorant enough to give up AP or Landry at pick #3 or #4.

I want us to go OL, LT specificly, but I realize we probally won't. Gaither would be awesome, but ehh, I'll live.

We need a CB/FS/LB.

I like Cason or Revis in the first for us.

This is where it gets confusing, especially if we land a FA CB that complicates my above pick.

In the second we could go with a DT like Pitcok or a FS like Nelson or a RB like Bush or a LB like Alexander or Blades.

In the third, we open up to even more options that are even more complicated based upon who we pick in the above rounds. We could be looking for a LB like Conor from Penn St. or a FS like Merriwether or an OC like the one from OSU or a RB like McFadden.

I want an athletic, playmaking, solid DB in the first if we refuse to go Gaither/Thomas. Landry will not be worth our pick and I do not want to reach. Though, I don't want CC Brown starting.

Good luck Rick Smith. :lightning:

I can see us drafting 4 to 9ish. but who knows. I would support a trade down as lond as its not too far, that may help us tremendously. I was thinking if we are picking like #4 for and Calvin Johnson dropped to us, there may be more teams wanting to trade up to get him.

Are you talking about revis and cason being worthy a high pick like #5? I don't see that.

I would love McFadden from ARK. in the 3rd but doubt he'll come out plus he may be a sophomore but I could be making that up. I do like another SEC RB in the 3rd in Kenneth Darby from Alabama.

I think one of Revis/Cason will go top 10. Both are talented enough, but who to pick? I would rather take one of these two top 10 than Landry.

I'm putting it out there now, Landry will not be the best FS come draft day. Reggie Nelson will.

I like Darby as well. Maybe even an Irons in the second. Or what if Okam drops to the second?

Too many options to properly wrap our heads around yet.

I believe the Boston College DT, B.J. Ajia has out Played him the last half of the season. There's little hope, but I'd move up in the top of the third to get a shot at the guy if he falls through the second round. He is , I believe, what TJ was reported to be. Hate to double dip...but when you're down to free agents at the end of the year...I tend to panic a bit.
So mine is so far...

1.Thomas/Baker- OLT
2. Fred Barnett- DB
3. B.J. Ajai - DT

Seen Terrell Brown of Texas rated high. Tells me it's a weak cornerback class after the first two rounds.

4. Kenney Irons Jr. ?

Got a FA prospect for ya YTF. Kevin Huff. He's never going to play QB in the NFL. Make a heck of a slash guy. Train him up...might do a prety good Reggie imataion in a couple of years. Blank slate like that, Kubes has no bad habits to undo.

I read a recent Sporting News observation on Pitcock that he was disappointing when they scouted him closely. Said he doesn't explode off the ball well. FWIW.

One name folks should start paying attention to as a DT is Glen Dorsey from LSU. He's a junior but may come out early. Saw one projection where he might go midway through the first round. He's a beat who gets off the ball fast and aggressively. Blows up running plays, gets great penetration through the lines and is athletic. TSN said he's the best d-tackle in college ball, I believe.

If he comes out...I would rate Reggie Nelson along side LaRon Landry. I would rather have Landry though because he is more proven and has more experience. Nelson may be faster and a bit quicker, but Landry is more compact...looks more durable too. Nelson may end up the bigger gamebreaker, but I think Landry will be more consistant.

well, his mom has stated that he will be entering the draft.

as for his actual skill set, you are pretty much right on. He is more of a game-changer, but after watching him this season, he is VERY solid in the run game as well. He isn't maybe as complete as Landry in EVERY aspect, but is dang close in all that he is not better than Landry in.

Don't think Mr. Bush last that long. We'll see how he runs at the combine. It is perfectly clear that the Steelers are not the same team without the power back. Jets will sniff him too. We keep losing...we're going to take Joe Thomas . Don't think they'll go for more than one o player day one. Thinking they'll beat the bushes for their RB canidate (offensive prospects) next year. Also think a lot of people have Leonard graded way too high. He's a late day one pick at best. Ian Johnson is a better prospect at FB/HB.

So are you saying if we went Joe Thomas/ Nelson you would be a happy man ? That would make two of us.

I like the BC DT B.J. Ajia in the third. I hate double dipping positions in the draft, but I believe, and I think I'm fair in this, we've seen the best we're going to see out of Mr. TJ. Demeeco stays in the middle, they gotta have a road grader in front of him sucking up the gaurds. At 310-320 , BJ qualifies. He's not on the lists, yet. But he ain't going to last long into day two. Think our street FA guys have done well to their skill set the last three games. But With Payne and TJ injured, we're going to get a wide body pretty quick in the draft. JMHO.

Would make three...but we would need two first rounders for that...because i doubt Nelson would be anything less than a first rounder, its just about if he comes out or not.

BUENO!
I just hope not everyone gets mad when we go with an offensive Lineman.

I've decided that I'm not getting mad anymore over the Texans draft. I've been griping for the last 3 years about their decisions and while I still think that often they've drafted lousy I've found that complaining about it hasn't changed anything.

I get my (veteran) CB through the free agent market along with the best FA OL I can get to come here without spending stupid money. Then I do the following (assuming they're available)

If I can find a veteran safety who's still worth a damn I try and sign him too.

1. RB: Adrian Peterson if he's there
2. LB: Best OLB left
3. S: Again best remaining guy

In day two I try and grab a QB, DT, CB, and a G in whatever order they happen to appear.
