Winston?

awtysst

Draft Guru
Whats the word on Winston these days? With the problems at our tackles is Winston ready to step up and play or is he still not quite ready?

Supposedly there is some talk of moving Tyrannosaurus Eric to Guard. I think we should draft a Tackle in the first round next year either way. This never-ending line issue has got to be resolved one of these years.

i agree, lets draft Joe Thomas out of Wisconsin

Maybe if we'd stop moving our LTs to guard or cutting them when they are one of our two best LTs we wouldn't constantly need to draft one so badly. I still can't believe they cut Seth Wand and kept Salaam.

Although I believe we should have Wand on the roster instead of Bedell, do you honestly believe if we had Wand starting that OT wouldn't be a weakness on this team?

What's with all the knee-brace gear ? Oh that's right, if memory serves, I'm
thinking he blew a knee out in the bowl game his team was in at the end of the 2005 season ? So that's one knee, how come the other one is also
screwed-up ? Maybe we should invest our first round pick in a guy who's not
among the walking wounded ?

It wouldn't be a weakness on his side. We need 2 starters though.

I've noticed some college teams have knee braces on both knees of all their lineman, injury history or not. I don't know about Wisconsin specifically though.

Most linemen use braces on both knees to help prevent injuries, make it a point to look at the linemen this weekend, particularly college teams.

they also wear them on both so the one knee isnt a big target, if they wear it on the one thats weak, players are gonna go after it, and with two the Defense has to think about wich one is injured

I played OL...LT....in college.....

My OL coach, required that we wear knee braces...on both knees.....everbody....

I honestly don't think that has anything to do with it....

That is why I was an advocate of us taking Ferguson. Hopefully when the dust settles in April, we will have a shot at a guy of his caliber.

Did not know that ? I don't watch that much college ball, primarily NFL ball.
Do many pro teams have this practice and if not why are they different than
the college teams ?
I don't recall seeing braces on any Texan lineman, except perhaps Winston but assumed his was related to the knee injury he had back in 2004 ?
So you're saying this is primarily preventative. You knew Thomas did have
a knee injury at the end of last year, and probably would have come out at the end of 2005 had it not been for the knee injury ?

I have watched Winston closely whenever he gets in the game. He looks like a typical zone-blocking tackle. His pass protection has been very solid as well. I think the thing i like most is that he is from the U, so you know he has a mean streak! :shades:

ehh okay bad joke...

i thought he looked like crap this last game.

Winston doesnt look like he is near being ready to start a game.

He is still too slow moving side to side & he has to prove to me that he can read blitzes better than he did at Miami.

He rarely got beat by DEs in college but LBs would just run right around him or underneath him.

I paid attention to him for 3 plays right after Sallaam left and he seemed to do a pretty fair job. Can't say I paid any attention after that, but for about 3 plays....looked solid, not dominating, but "OK".

Winston did fine, but he isn't the answer. If the coaches were that confident he was NFL ready, he would have been in by now. Hopefully some time in the weight room and some experience this year will help him grow. I'm writing off this year as far as wins are concerned...

It would still be a problem, but it wouldn't be nearly as bad. It might even be better than Spencer did (maybe), but he's a rookie so nothing against him. Salaam is useless. At least Wand would be out there getting the job done adequately most of the time, but not always.

Have faith this kid loves to play the game and he will rise to the occation and the opportunity to play. By this time next year he will own the tackle position . Watched him develop and play alot in HS and at Miami he will be just fine. His not being on the field yet I feel has more to do with coaches egos than his ability to play. Go Big Eric,!!!

I'm gonna take your word for it Crazyhorse. I want to see some smash-mouth play out of our O-Line and if Winston can bring it, more power to him!! This is a great opportunity for him to step up and be recognized. :twocents:

I feel very confident that Winston will win a starting spot and perform very well in the long run. I just don't know when that's really going to happen. Hopefully you're right and it'll be by early next year.

More to do with the coaches ego? Umm, these coaches chose him to play on this team. How is that a bad thing? Isn't it more likely they feel he is not ready to play?

Tackles did a much better job this week and probably bought themselves through the rest of the season (barring injury). I saw a good hit from Weigert, and Carr remained pretty much without pressure.

On the other hand (just so it's said), the Giants D is really depleted.

I still look forward to Winston getting some playing time.

the Texans need that franchise LT so they can stretch the field by giving Carr more time for longer routes to develop. I really like Spencer in the running game when he returns most likely RT to replace Weigert.

while it may be standard procedure for lineman to wear protective knee braces, Thomas tore his acl last season / while technically sound has some lateral limitations because of it, a problem Winston is still recovering from.

They looked much better. Good for the year? I don't know - they are very inconsistent and their performance swings wildly from one week to another.

Halfway through the season, at 2 and 6, and Wiegert for most parts being gone next year, I say it is time to start Winston. Maybe not this week, but for sure the last 6 games and lets see what he got (don't think it can be any worse than Wiegert).

After Jacksonville, I think the schedule gets much lighter (Buffalo at home, Raiders, Jets, Browns, Tennessee at home). It will be a much better time to bring Winston in.

the longer we wait to get Winston in the game the longer we will wallow with a medicore offensive line. Weigert and Saalam did a good job against N.Y. but they are not the long term solution. The playoffs are not in the cards this year so it's time to build for next year.
Winston is the only tackle of starting status that is healthy. It only makes sense to get him all the experience he needs going into next year. Hopefully Spencer will be back but that still remains to be seen. We can only say a prayer for him that all heals well.
As for coaches ego's all one has to do is read previous posts by former Packer Davenport now with the Eagles. His comments on Sherman speak volumes about his ego and his some what archaic approach to playing his personnel. Would he keep a player off the field to serve his needs, I think so especially when it's the position of his own pick that he is protecting. Who knows maybe Sherman hoped that Spencer's rise would help him get another head coaching position. A little thinking outside the box and Winston could do the same.
I've said it before that Winston has as much upside as Spencer maybe more but the Texan's will never realize this until they give him the same opportunity that they gave Spencer from the start. I watched almost every preseason practice available and there were many evenings when Winston's speed Quickness and thought process far out Shined Spencer. For someone they say isn't ready he has play extremely well everytime he is on the field.Building for the future starts now not a month from now or next year.

There's always front office and coach's battles. From what I've heard, the LT Sherman wanted no longer plays for the team. Spencer was Coach K's choice, and now he's injured. So Kubes put in an ex-Bronco with a bad history. I don't think Salaam or Weigert are shining, but I don't think the coaches are anywhere near ready to play Winston full time. Coaches can be boneheaded about the line, even a little superstitious, if you ask me. Once they have something, they stick with it, and I could see potentially Coach K looking outside the organization if something every happened to Salaam or Weigert. Good luck to Winston, though, and I hope he cracks the starting line-up. He's a great lineman.

"I think the biggest disappointment is that (Charles) Spencer doesn’t have 500 plays under his belt at left tackle,” Kubiak said. “I think he’s going to be a (heck) of a player. "

Good quote by the Coach but the fact of the matter is, it's not going to happen this year. The other fact that could happen is to get Winston a large part of those snaps so he progresses and can contribute more to the team.
Having seen both of these players practice and play, I and many people I have talked to share the same opinion There is not much difference in the playing level of both these athletes. I would like to see them give Winston the same opportunity and reps in practice that Spencer got to start the season. I don't know what the issue is but there is not a level playing field when it comes to these two players.
As someone else stated they drafted him so why not develop him. I went back and looked at the combine workouts and Winston was one or two in every catagory and maybe 3rd in one. This is for all the offensive linemen. His work out exceded that of Spencer and even the Brick's by a good margin. Someone exhibiting this speed and agility in these workouts is capable of playing for this team. I am tired of the lame excuses the coaches put forward, if they don't want him put him on the waiver wire and watch how fast someone picks him up. Then we can all watch him come back and haunt us as another opportunity this organization missed.........
