My Thoughts on our Texans heading into bye week

Our Houston Texans recieved their first win of the season against the Miami Dolphins Sunday, defeating them 17-15 in a well played game. This is very big for our Texans upon heading into the bye week, as this now boosts the team's confidence, boosts the fans confidence and gives us some momentum and something to build off of.

I was very proud of our Houston Texans in the way they responded to some critisism from Head Coach Gary Kubiak following the loss vs. Washington. Particularly, the defense. I was very pleased to see us get off the field on most of Miami's 3rd down attempts. I was very pleased to see us send pressure at Culpepper and get some sacks on him. Mario Williams really stepped up against Miami after getting some critisism from Kubiak. He got almost 2 sacks and opened it up for other players of our defense to get to him. I am very proud of Mario, he has had so much pressure on hmi since he was drafted and he will take time to develop. He will eventually develop into a solid player, and we certainly seen a preview of that Sunday against Miami. He handles himself like a professional to say the least.

Overall, my hat goes off to the entire defense. They really stepped up and were a major part of our success versus Miami. We still have alot of work to do, and it will still take time with a new scheme and new players, but it will develop into something positive for the future.

On offense, we eliminated the small, carless mistakes for the most part this game. We did not fumble any snap exchanges, have to many costly penalties, we did have one interception when Carr hit AJ and AJ bobled it and the Miami defender snatched it, but that stuff will happen.

We did struggle some in the first half on offense in terms of getting a TD, but we had a nice TD drive late in the 3rd/start of the 4th quarter, and had another TD drive later in the 4th. Our offense came through when they needed to, late in the game with two key TD's. That is the sign of a good offense when you can come through big when the game's on the line, and we certainly did that today.

Overall, great game played against Miami.

We are 1-3 heading into our bye week, which is not to bad considering again, we have many rookies starting, many new players, a new coaching staff and new schemes on both sides of the ball. This will take time, but we seen today what can happen when everyone's on the same page.

We have all the elements in place for a winning football team on a consistent basis for a long period of time with these Texans. I said before the season we can have a good amount of success this year, I still said it when we were 0-3, and with this Win over Miami, I say it loud.

This team may very well have started to turn the corner, and again, we have a long way to go, one hell of a schedule from here on in, but we are a quarter way thru this football season and I can say I like the direction we are heading.

Great job cheering us on Sunday fans, it was also very great to see Reliant Stadium rockin' like that. Good time are coming, I have been saying it for a long time yes, but we are getting closer and closer.

Go Texans!:texan:

No we don't. We have the coaching for the future(that's if Smith keeps improving defensive play). We still do not have a solid O-line. Our running game has regressed compared to last year...To make a long story short, there are many, many holes to plug before we "have all the elements in place for winning football team"

Your optimism is appreciated though. I wasn't bashing your post either.:redtowel:

Sorry, I think you are way over board on your optimism. We missed tackles all over the board, yards per carry sucked no matter whom you blame it on and if Mario had not tipped the ball, I thought the game would have been tied on the extra point conversion. Yes, it is a win. I just don't like sloppy play. We need to come back hard for Dallas, but unfortunately, I am predicting a loss.

I find it odd that Mario deflects a pass and it is used as a negetive, isn't that what everyone said Mario didn't do-play hard all the time, that play was what you expect, and what we received, from a good DE. At 20 Mario will be a monster load at 21-22 and beyond.
We won, we won, we won, tell every hater you see. Carr still has the highest QB rating in the NFL, and he can get better, now that should get everyone exicted. As for missed tackles, I have nothing to add but, we won, the proof is in the pudding.

Here we go baby, being a pesimist, we will split the next 6 games.
Being me, yesterday was the start of our 7 game win streak.

I enjoy reading your posts they are a bit long, but very upbeat and the glass is always full. Reminds me of me lol...TEXANS4LIFE!!!

Yeah, IF the ball hadn't been tipped, the Dolphin receiver has a better chance to catch the ball... but so what.. the defense made a play, a good one, regardless of who tipped it, the play was sniffed out and the DL MADE A PLAY!

That is a sign of progress... I don't think anyone is turning this little victory into a playoff surge by the Texans, but it is nice to see your team make a play when they absolutely have to.

I think many know that there are many holes to fill, but the more these players gain confidence and start making plays, then the sooner the turnaround will be.

The original post said that he liked the direction that we are going but are no where near where we need to be. To me, that is a concession that there are holes, likely the ones that you point out and more, but a victory is enough reason to raise your head a little bit and let the team build off of the momentum...

More importantly, this team needs to learn how to keep the intensity going after a win. A victory this week is just as big of a test to see how tough and hard the team comes out the next game. There is a lot to gain from this victory in terms of character development.

I had cautiously predicted a 2-2 start coming into bye week, but 1-3 is not too far off that mark. The Defense needs to improve secondary and increase the # of times they blitz. Off ense is ok , but they need to decrease fumbles on snaps. We have two weeks til our superbow. so if we win it then the season will be sucessful, even if we only win 2 games.

I Hate The COWBOYS. beat them and our year will be complete.

tackling was bad...... this last game. Suspect against Washington, but overall, pretty good.

Running looked good against Indy... even though our starting running back had been with the team for 2 weeks.... Philly..... I think we did well, other than the fumbling.... Washinton, again, I think we did well.

We've got work to do, and running at or below what the other team gives up on avg..... isn't going to cut it. But I don't believe our run game is in as dire straights as everyone else thinks....

Our rushing offense is ranked 26th in the NFL right now ahead of only Green Bay, Cleveland, Detroit, Tennessee, Arizona, and Tampa Bay. As a team we are averaging 3.2 yards per carry and as a team we have scored one rushing touchdown in 4 games. That is pretty bad if you ask me...

When you start seeing wholes like DD saw last year on a regular basis you will see a better running game.

and DC was the one that got that one, of course, I'm not complaining about that, I mean, he is my starting fantasy QB

I'm not trying to call you out, but maybe...just MAYBE some people should start trying to give DD a little more credit for the way he has run the ball the last few yrs.

We improved our Oline and now we can't run the ball....this should be clear evidence that what DD had to work with was even LESS blocking, he just made it work anyway. I sure don't recall DD having HUGE holes on a consistant basis, decent yes, but not great. Is it so hard for people to believe that DD could actually be that good?

well you're looking at it all wrong.

try to remember first of all, our RBs weren't in OTAs, TC, or Preseason with this team. We've had one on the team for 3 weeks, and the other for 2.

Second, try to think what you expected this team to do as far as W-L......

Most, thought we'd loose the first 4 games...... one, because we didn't have the firepower to go toe to toe with Indy. The other three, because they are play-off teams whose strength is Defense.....

Washington- Defense
Philly- Defense
Miami-Defense.

Look at what those teams have done against the run this year.

Washington- 5th in the league(to date) giving up only 79.5 yards per game....
Philly- 15th in the league. giving up 93 yards game
Indy- gives up 155 yards/game. Our run D is actually better than theirs.

But we played all three games from behind, early. Playing catch up is not the time to showcase your run game..... so these games really have little to tell us about our run game.

Miami- Gives up 94.5 yards per game..... They are right behind Philly.

We've got a little time to prepare for Dallas..... we'll get an extra week of tape on them next week.

Dallas gives up 83 yards/game....... 3.2 per carry.......

it will be a test for sure, but you can't think our run game sucks, unless we can't run for 50 yards in a close game. If it gets out of hand early, and we are down by three scores the start of the third Qtr, forget about running the ball.

I'm hopping people see what the Edge is doing down in Arizona, and realizing the same thing.

DD was an avg running back on a bad team. You put him on a good team, where other teams fear the QB/WR ability to beat them deep..... a good OLine (just like the one they want/need for David Carr) and DD is a proBowler.

This is not a valid excuse for our poor running game. This was caused by a coaches decision. It might let the RBs off the hook, but only as far as you are willing to put the coaches on the hook.

Well let's look at what Morency has done with Green Bay tonight, against the Eagles. 12 carries for 50 yards at the half for an average of just over 4.0 YPC and one fumble, and he has done that behind a Green Bay line that has two rookies starting at the guard positions, and he was not in OTA, TC, or preseason with Green Bay, he has had just as much time there as Gado has had here. And as far as playing from behind, we went up on Philly 7-0 in the 1st and we were only down 14-10 at halftime, we went up on Washington 7-0 in the 1st, and we were tied with Miami at halftime.

I'm not saying we were out of reach for the Miami game.... that is probably our best game to judge our Rungame for a whole game.

How were we doing against Indy, Washinton & Philly at the half??

Eagles--14 to 10
Indy--20 to 3
Skins--21 to 7

None more than 3 score games and you are going to get three drives in the half.
