WK1: Colts at Texan Gameday & Discussion

Maybe, but Lovie is a different kind of DC. He actually anticipates his D to score points and get takeaways. Backing a team up and playing Lovie D with a lead for him is probably being aggressive Since he expects to score from that strategy. Texans just need to amp up their run game to pull it off.

tats not a sustainable strategy. We can disagree. Lovie wasn’t at all trying to be agressive there…he went prevent/cover 2 shell late in that game..which is why those running lanes were gapping late in the game for Taylor & why the Colts started rolling offensively.

To aid in that, the Colts started running more tempo..and spreading us out….which sort of forced Lovie and his defense to “declare”…i.e. they didnt have time to disguise what they were doing..they just had to jump in their shell. Basically they were playing not to give up the big play and the Colts took what Lovie was giving them…& they went down the field…a little too easily…

With the opportunity to win a game we were expected to lose, and not doing so was a disappointment. And I saw aspects of Mills play that I didn't like and needs improvement. But still, looking at the positive, Mills ended up with 240 yds, 2 TD's, 0 INT's and a rating of 98.9.

Taylor beat us. You can say our run defense s*cks, but Taylor is one of the leagues premier RB's.

The play which sticks in my craw is Tunsil wiffing on the play which resulted in Mills sack and fumble.

Has anyone assessed Green's play at LG?

(edit) Opps .... LG, of course, not RG.

Burkhead was supposed to pickup the blitzing safety. That wasn't Tunsil's guy. Mills could've also helped by knowing the blitz was coming and gotten rid of ball. Mills has to improve his throws outside the numbers and also make some off schedule plays. This isn't just running with the ball, but when plays are designed to go to say Cooks and Jordan is open in the middle of the field, Mills needs to know this and throw the ball to Jordan instead of forcing the ball to Cooks.

With this said, I think Mills looked pretty good for a guy who was making his 9th NFL start.

I think if these little LBs are guessing pass when the other team is thinking run, it’s too late & they’re out of position before they realize it’s a run.

So yeah, if they’re playing prevent, they’re not going to stop Taylor/Hines from picking up 10 yards on the ground

Rodgers is in the wrong system. I called it the day they hired Matt LaFleur. Rodgers' talent is wasted being on the short leash of the Shanahan west coast offense.
@steelbtexan is either being sarcastic or thinks Mills is better than Rodgers.

Under LaFleur, Rodgers threw a career high 48 TDs and completed a career high 70% of his passes. LaFleur has adjusted his version of the WCO to fit Rodgers' off schedule play making. That WCO is the least of the Packers problems.

I meant that post as a joke to all of those who blame the Texans failures on Mills.

While true, they made the NFCCG last yr and should've made the SB. IMHO

My sarcasm metter is on high today.

I would have much rather had the win than the tie, but this game was thought of almost universally as an easy win for the Colts. This team is still definitely a work in progress, and I think that Mills' lack of experience is largely forgotten. Does anyone really expect him to be Joe Montana after a half a season's worth of starts? I don't think that's a reasonable expectation. Especially since the level of talent around him on this team still just isn't there yet. Give the kid a chance to grow. I'm going to withhold judgement until at least the end of this season.

Texans are a 5 win team and turtle while playing for the tie. With a seasoned head coach

the giants, with a first year head coach and also a 5 win team, go for two at the end of the game and get it!!
I’m still pissed at Lovie about that crap
You do know the Colts made the same decision to play for the tie right?

I watched Trey Lance suck it up all game and he’s got weapons galore and SF got blown out by the high powered Chicago Bears. But Treys not a bust….and Mills is the entire problem in Houston. Lol.

How does Caserio do that? Be the first to say "Dibs on Caleb Williams" at the league meetings? How about the Texans just wait for Arch Manning to be draft eligible and make a deal with the Mannings to say he won't sign with any other team?

I proposed a year ago that the Texans hold out for Arch Manning and you said that the Manning’s wouldn’t let him play here. Interesting turn of events. Glad to see I am a positive influence on you.

BTW - draft capital is the answer you seek. The Texans have 5 first round picks in the next 3 years. Next year if they are in a spot to draft a top QB trade that pick to another team. Get more firsts.

I like your way of thinking.

Ewers looked pretty good yesterday before he got hurt.

I'm not so po'ed about the 4th and 3 punt. It put us in position to possibly make a defensive play. If we would have tried for it and failed, the Colts would have been one play from being in FG range. The play to be upset about was the play called on 3rd and 1.

Texans had plenty of opportunities to win and blew it. Colts did as well. That’s the nature of ties.

But punting on 4th and 3 to concede the tie?! That’s inexcusable. Obviously can’t call it a “loser” move but it definitely isn’t something winners do!

The problem is Lovie Smith is a dinosaur. He's old school in a league that's left him behind.

Haven't read all the comments. A little disappointed in punting on 4th down in OT. Given what our team is this season, being aggressive and building confidence seems a little more important than winning/not losing games. Having said that, I'm not too disappointed yet. This is just week 1. We don't know how good or not good any of the teams are. This is the NFL. I just want to see some progress from last year (and I've seen it in this game), and then week to week. So, we'll see what happens next week. As to Mills, just let him settle in. Is he the guy? No idea (hope so, but probably not). But it's also not a surprise to anyone. Let's just find out.

Exactly. Everybody knows if your QB fumbles the ball the defense isn’t allowed to pressure the opposing offense the rest of the game.

I’m pretty sure it’s grandfathered in the cba
Very funny. However it is a fact that a play like that can be a huge momentum shift, especially for a team like the Texans. When we had a solid lead in this game I didn't see many post discussing how bad our defense in any aspect was. We had outplayed the Colts up to that point. We had more or less kept Matt Ryan and the Colts in check.

I agree with you. However I think was a combination of Lovie and the momentum shift that took place after Mills fumbled and we lost the ball. Up to the point where that happend we had the momentum and were looking pretty good.

Man.

If you are the Colts you got to be worried about Matt Ryan. He played bad.
Matt Ryan does not handle being moved around by the defense and he was definitely impacted in the first half. I think our defense just ran out of steam which is surprising sensor such a focus by all NFL teams on strength and conditioning. Also lovey likes to rotate his front seven which should keep them strong through the game. I just saw exhaustion written on all the players.

What happened to Neville Hewitt who as I understand "forced his way into the starter" role?

Yep - the lack of a running game rears it's ugly head again.
Add to that the lack of a dangerous receiving corp and you have a lack lustre offense.
I can't believe the pundits on this thread overlooking this when assessing Mills - then we still have to consider it is still only his 12 the start, not even a full season.
I reckon he would play with much more confidence with a decent offense.
