Nick Caserio - New GM

If Watson is in Cabo, it would make sense that he may have shut off his phone. Perhaps decided to take a real vacation and say f'it to all the media and crap.
Don't be surprised when Watson shows up and everything is not a kumbaya moment. I can see a situation where Deshaun is steaming mad and today he's madder than yesterday and tomorrow he will be madder than today. Teammates and other players have egged him on, fueled the fire and when he gets back he has worked himself into a frenzy and demands a trade.

Very possible. If that is the case, as much as I like him....I like multiple high draft picks too.

While I'm not a fan of trading a franchise QB (especially with a franchise that has never had one), I'm also pragmatic and know that everything has a price.

I do have to wonder what the Texans would ultimately take to move Watson? The public perception alone is a hefty price to pay for a company so concerned with customer relations, so it would have to be a sort of Hershel Walker once-in-a-generation type deal, IMO.

Get Watson disgruntled enough that he wants to leave and is willing to waive the no-trade clause. It's some Littlefinger politics, but par for the course with a certain individual within the franchise.

anything’s possible...but that’s true for almost any situation at any given time. What’s more LIKELY based on the info we have at this very moment though....well things just aren’t pointing in that direction enough.........but obviously it could go that way.

Did the new gm really say he doesn't like barbecue?
"What did he say about cheesesteaks?" - Deshaun Watson

I'm drinking the koolaid. I liked Caserio. He looks like he's ready for the job and ready to get things done. I'd like to hear more football from him, but I know he knows the game. Caserio is acting like the man that's in charge. Cal "Blind Squirrel" McNair found his nut.

For the life of me I can't figure out what a player would even look for in a GM and why he would be particularly interested in that hire. It's not as if they will be working together daily like they would with a HC.

I just posted that Watson is 25 with limited real life experience, but he does recognize this

“We’ve all got to be on the same page,” Watson said, via ESPN. “There’s too many different minds, too many different ideas and too many people thinking they have this power, and it’s not like that. We need someone that stands tall, and this is who we follow and this is the way it goes.”
“We just need a whole culture shift,” Watson said Monday, via the Houston Chronicle. “We just need new energy. We just need discipline. We need structure. We need a leader so we can follow that leader as players.”

I don't think those quotes, in any way, shape or form, qualify him to have a say in or be butt hurt about who the Texans tab to be their next GM.

Is that quote a vote for Tom Coughlin as GM or HC? From the outside looking in, it would seem the Texans would be hard pressed to get a coach with a more rigid structure and appearance of "discipline" than OB presented.
About the only platitude he missed was the need for better team mates.

OB discipline was that of a control freak. He was power hungry more than anything else. That’s a big difference.

Watson said all of those things and it looks like Cal went out and got the most qualified. Nick seems to have a great handle on things and will more and likely bring that those things Watson elaborated on.

Hopefully Caserio doesn’t just hire Eric Bieniemy to make headlines for hiring a minority HC. If he’s smart enough he’ll go with the best man for the job, over what social warriors expect and demand. We don’t have time to let a guy who is not ready to come learn on the job.

IMHO Caserio will get one shot at his hiring of a Texans head coach. As goes the new head coach, so goes Caserio. Nick will live or die with that one decision. Therefore I highly doubt Bienemy will be the Texans next coach. Caserio was with the Pats for 20 years. Odds are he will go with what he knows and is comfortable with, Josh McDaniels or Brian Daboll. Two things Caserio did not bring with him, Belichick and Brady, strike two. He doesn't like BBQ, strike three.

Nothing Cal did contradicted anything anything Watson said in those quotes. If anything he did exactly what Watson said & got that leader.

The idea that Watson is upset because he wasn’t informed before every one else is preposterous. Doesn’t sound like Watson.

What it sounds like to me is he is upset about Easterby’s influence.

But just like many here, I think he got it backwards. I believe everything Cal’s done has been to get Caserio, who Bob McNair identified as our next GM in 2018, before Easterby.

We jumped on Easterby the moment he was available because of his ties to Caserio, not New England.

Then why did the Bob McNair/Texans hire Brian Gaine as their new General Manager in 2018? And Gaine was fired 6 months after Bob McNair had passed away.

If none of the Watson stories are making sense to you why has Watson expressed to several teammates and players about his desire to leave Houston?

Because the Patriots did not allow Caserio to interview with other teams.

I think Gaine was like their 3rd or 4th choice.

I said I believe he is upset about Easterby's apparent influence. I believe the stories about many players not wanting Easterby around & Watson being one of them.

I don't believe he expected to be consulted or informed about the GM decision. If Cal hired Dorsey or Khan, Watson wouldn't have said anything.

Of course it's about New England, they would not have thought about Caserio if he wasn't associated with New England due to their success. The issue is and has always been that the Texans have not forged their own identity. I understand the whole "copy cat" thing regarding strategies in the NFL and how the inner circles typically stay the course but IMO what DW is concerned with is that the Texans org seems to have continued the path that hasn't resulted in championship caliber football. The decisions on the Texans will be Cal, Jack, Nick and the HC no matter what the teams says to the public. Cal trusts Jack so like it or not Easterby DOES play an integral role in the operations of the of the team to include the players. But just like in the real world leadership must identify with those that fall within their realm of responsibility. You won't succumb to their every wish but you will listen, especially to those who have influence or whom you consider to be valuable. As it has been said previously, Caserio's head coach hire will speak volumes.

Yes.

Caserio's history with New England is a big part of why they wanted Nick. I didn't say different.

Easterby was targeted because of his association with Nick. Easterby was in New England because of his association with Nick. We hired Easterby hoping to entice Caserio.

Pioli was the gateway between Kansas City the joke & Kansas City Super Bowl Championd.

We're the Kansas City joke right now

I for one hope trading Watson is the nuclear option. I just hate the thought of moving a sure thing very good young QB especially after so many years of QBswe’ve suffered through. Then again teams have won titles with good QBs and great teams built around them

How he builds the roster, manages the cap, evaluates talent, sees the draft and free agency, etc. Is he in win now mode? Does he want to build for the future? Acquire more picks or free capspace?

To be fair he’s not going to say those kind of things publicly where other teams can hear them.

“Yeah we are planning on requesting a 2nd round for Watt but we would settle for a 3rd but please don’t let the other teams know.”

Yeah that would work well.

Very good point, honestly that might be why he kept OB as long as he did because he and Caserio were/are friends as well and several reports said the chance to work with Easterby and OB again might be what lures Caserio out of NE finally. Until OB crashed it into the wall so many times there wouldn’t be anything left and Cal hadto act.

I don’t think he was hungry for power so much as he was just a control freak...and that need to control only got worse as he recieved more power...power he may not have even wanted to be honest..I say that b/c I truly believe he didn’t want the GM gig...he only wanted control over certain decisions that traditionally a GM has.

you know how it is...when you have people working for you....and you know **** is gonna fall on you if it doesn’t go well, you tend to micromanage and take over/redo things that your staff isn’t doing to your liking. The house of cards eventually just came crashing down.

Not that specific obviously. But I have no idea at all what kind of strategy he has. Are we going to tank and rebuild like browns and miami? Are we going to win now? Is he going to rely on data or more on scouting? Is he gonna build through draft or free agency?

That kind of stuff is what a GM has to decide

And not the type of stuff you talk about in an introductory press conference... give him time

Maybe so. I hope the media actually asks these questions and that Caserio also has answers.
I doubt he's followed this team as close as you have the past 18 months. You most likely have a better understanding of the state of the franchise than he does right now.

He's going to get his feet on the ground & come to the conclusion @Corrosion has. Then he's going to tell Cal what needs to be done.

Then he's going to give us some coach speak.

If we start seeing the hard cuts that have to happen, Cal stepped down & will let Nick do his job.

If we start seeing salary chicanery, Cal convinced Nick to find another way.

I don't put much value in the things people say. After the draft, free agency, and June 1 we'll get a sense of our direction.

It doesn't.t in terms of his qualification, but he knows there is a leadership problem. and If someone is going to promise (wrongheadedly) give a 25-year-old with limited life experience a voice probably speaks directly to that leadership issue.

Maybe. Dabol, Caserio, Easterby

From this article it says Pioli brought Easterby to KC, and then after the Aaron Hernandez thing, he got on with New England because Pioli recommended him to Belicheck.

You will notice that Pioli was never reunited with Belicheck and currently works in Atlanta as an assistant GM. Hmmm.

The first thing and I’m sure is his focus is finding a HC. It would be a bad idea in my book to start planning what players you are going to keep/cut or how you are going to rebuild over all before you have a coach in place. A GM and a HC both having different ideas for a team and both trying to build without the other is what lead to this mess.

Easterby was targeted because of his association with Nick. Easterby was in New England because of his association with Nick. We hired Easterby hoping to entice Caserio.
So if they hired Easterby in April of 2019, how was he going to entice Caserio when we still had Brian Gaine as GM at the time who came on board Jan 2018 and was let go Jun 2019. I'm asking because I see some posts saying that the Texans have been pursuing Caserio for longer than the potential tampering fiasco.

Pioli was the gateway between Kansas City the joke & Kansas City Super Bowl Championd.

We're the Kansas City joke right now
Kansas City the joke, at one time had Scott Pioli and Jack Easterby (Chaplain) in the organization at the same time (only a year I think). I hope the Texans combo of Caserio and Easterby bring better luck.

This article also doesn't mention that easterby wasn't offered a contract extension by the pats.

He was hoping to have a bigger role, and that's when he came up with the story that he wanted to leave due to the Kraft scandal, and found Houston as a landing spot with Obrien wanting his help to consolidate decision making power

The unraveling of the Texans that would lead to hiring a fifth general manager began in March of 2020 whenO’Brien traded DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona. When the Texans started 0-4, O’Brien was fired as head coach and general manager and replaced by Romeo Crennel and Easterby on an interim basis.

McNair started to think about hiring Caserio a third time, according to two people close to the owner. When the NFL changed a rule in May allowing front office executives under contract to interview for other jobs that would give them more responsibility — like control of personnel — Easterby stumped for Caserio again.

The search firm that McNair headed included Rootes and Korn Ferry’s Jed Hughes. McNair added a five-man advisory group to aid in the process.

The Texans interviewed four candidates and had two more in their sights. When Caserio started lining up interviews, McNair didn’t want to take a chance that he’d get another job before the Texans had a chance to interview him.

McNair and Easterby left Houston on Monday morning. They flew to Bedford, Mass., to pick up Caserio and bring him back to Houston for an official interview.

McNair and Easterby kept their trip secret because they didn’t want another team to hear about their pursuit of Caserio and expedite the interview process in a stepped-up effort to hire Caserio.

On the flight back to Houston, McNair was finally able to talk with Caserio for the first time. He was impressed with the longtime New England personnel director who had made nine Super Bowl appearances and earned six rings. But something else stood out to McNair during the 3½-hour trip: Caserio’s devotion to his family and his religion.

On Tuesday morning, Caserio had his official interview lasting three hours. By that time, McNair was certain he had found his next general manager. He didn’t want to do any more interviews.

Late Tuesday afternoon, McNair and Suzie Thomas, the Texans’ executive vice president and chief legal and administrative officer, started contract negotiations with agent Bob Lamonte, who also reps Easterby.

That night, Caserio reached an agreement on a six-year, $30 million contract and signed it the next day. The Texans were going to introduce Caserio as their new general manager on Wednesday, but the events in Washington D.C. caused them to delay the announcement for a day.

On Friday, Caserio met with the media for the first time on a Zoom conference call. He was articulate, intelligent, humble and insightful, making a strong first impression.

Now the hard part starts. Caserio has to revitalize a team that finished 4-12, has an unhappy quarterback in Deshaun Watson, a salary cap problem and no draft choices in the first two rounds.

With a six-year contract, Caserio will have plenty of time to prove to McNair the third time was a charm

Yeah , one of two things is going to happen here:

A: They clear the deck and make the hard cuts which means next years team probably has similar results to last years in terms of W's and L's. But they'll do their best to give the appearance they are trying to win.

B: They'll actually try to win kicking the salary cap can down the road and wont make a meaningful improvement what we'll get is likely mediocrity (at best).

I'm expecting the latter. The marketing firm can spin 8-8 , they can't spin 4-12.

I still can't recall all the other times, can any one fill me in...
But something else stood out to McNair during the 3½-hour trip: Caserio’s devotion to his family and his religion.
The real Jack connect to Caserio. I've read that Urban Meyer is also deeply religious...Jack get on the phone

The Texans asked permission to talk to Caserio in Jan. 2018. Patriots refused because they were still in the playoffs. The Texans didn’t wait around for them to be done and hired Gaine, for 5 years, immediately after.

Easterby was hired in April 2019. In June 2019, he attended the Patriots ring party. A day later, Gaine was fired and the Texans were again inquiring about Caserio. The Pats then accused the Texans of tampering and the Texans tucked their tail between their legs and go without an official GM for the 2019 season.

O’Brien gets named GM in Jan. 2020 and Easterby becomes his right hand man as they fire their cap guy, among others. Of course, 4 games into the season and OB is fired, Easterby stays, and Jan. 2021, the Texans 3 year journey to land Caserio finally ends. Those 3 years nearly destroy the franchise, but dammit, they finally get their guy.
