State of the O-line

I wonder if Sharping starts game 1 at LG? I know everybody has Rankin penciled in there but I like Scharping alot. I kinda hope they start Scharping at RG and the OL looks something like this if the Texans are really lucky and everybody is healthy game 1.

Kalil/ Rankin/ Fulton/ Scharping/ Howard.

With Henderson/Martin/Mancz as reserves and Davenport/Kelemete can be traded for a 3rd down RB and a Interior DL.

I’d be curious to get a look at a Rankin-Fulton-Scharping interior trio as well

Yikes. That would be much worse than last year.

Has Kalil been medically cleared? What is his status? When is he expected to return to the field?

Not if everyone is healthy and the rookies are worthy of their draft status.
Why on earth would you assume Khalil will be healthy or effective, even if he gets medically cleared? Either Davenport or Howard will most likely be the week one starting LT.

Even high first round picks worthy of their draft status will struggle. These guys are small school projects.

Khalil and Seantrel haven't been healthy in years.

If they can't beat out last yrs OL then I feel very sorry for Watson.

We're going to feel sorry for Watson either way. In this system as you can see is difficult to learn. We changed the line every year and the communication has gotten worse because of it. At least see try to stick with the starters from last season in the beginning. If they haven't gelled by then, move on with their replacement.

We need to see if Kalil can get healthy and how guys look with pads on, but I think Kelemente and Martin looked the worst by end of the year. Lamm is gone, Davenport was trending up, not happy with his play, but by week 1 will someone really outplay him from our roster? So I expect them to look hard at the interior in camp and pre-season, and see if Davenport and Henderson can be beat out. Wild guess, Fulton at center, Scharping and Rankin at guards, Davenport LT, Tytus RT. Probably have to start their shiny 1st rounder somewhere. We are the Texans so I would expect a different line by week 4 whatever they start

It's mentioned in numerous posts, and I'm in agreement, the Texans need to move Fulton to OC, a position he has experience at while in KC. Martin is listed as 295 lbs. He's too undersized, even for an OC. Fultion is an inch taller at 6'-5", but has shown he can get under the pads of shorter NT's. But more importantly in my opinion is he is listed as 321 lbs. Put Rankin to his left and Scharping to his right and we have, potentially, a solid interior line. If Henderson can do an adequate job at RT, then Scharping can move inside. Ideally, I'd like Howard to win the LT starting role.

Here's the thing we don't need everyone on the line to be an all pro, Watson is a mobile enough QB that he can get away for a little bit. We just need a line that can give him a few more seconds to get the ball away. I actually do expect the line to be much better because they do have more experience and actually looking at many of the teams we are playing against they have great offenses but much weaker defenses than what we just played against. Ravens will be the worst of the bunch next year but Dallas had the 7th ranked D and we beat them twice, Jags the 5th ranked and we beat them twice and Titans the 5th ranked and we split with them. In comparison Saints were 14, packers 18 and Pats 21. So some tough offenses but middle of the pack defenses.

Keeping Watson Clean

We also need our secondary receivers not named Watson and Fuller to get open as well.

Better play calling can open things up as well.

A legit running game will help out tremendously.

Being able to get the Tight ends more involved.

If they can’t beat out last year’s O-line, Devlin has got to go! If what butt chin said about Cal (telling him and all other employees what they need to improve on, I’m sure he made it clear that he wants and demands. I doubt he thinks highly of Devlin after 4-5 years of a whole bunch of nothing.

Devlin should've been fired last offseason.

BOB's loyalty to Devlin is going to get him fired. Just like Kubiak's loyalty to his staff/Schaub got him fired.

NFL offensive line rankings: All 32 teams' units entering 2019

31. HOUSTON TEXANS

PROJECTED STARTING LINEUP:
Left Tackle: Julie’n DavenportLeft Guard: Senio KelemeteCenter: Nick Martin
Right Guard: Zach Fulton
Right Tackle: Tytus Howard

All things considered, the Houston Texans offensive line didn’t get much better on paper this offseason. Moves were made — including taking Howard (78.9) and Max Scharping(82.4) in the first two rounds of the 2019 NFL Draft and signing veteran Matt Kalil, who missed all of 2018 with an injury — but until those players live up to expectations, the Texans remain the bottom of the barrel
