Welcome to Houston Kahale Warring

I said it as soon as it happened last season.. Jordan Akins was a horrible pick. You dont draft 26 year old projects..especially in the 3rd damn round. By the time he figures it out (if he ever does) he'll be out coming out of his athletic prime. I always liked the Thomas pick a LOT more and knew he'd be the better TE (6th round pick.)

I think what's really annoying me about this selection is mainly due to the dumbass decision to draft Jordan Akins (regardless if it even would've been with a late round flier) last season! I need to mentally separate this pick from the Akins pick.. Which was simply just a horrible decision.

This kid is actually the kind of project you DO select in the 3rd round.. (just not sure it should've been this team, given our other needs.)

Add the best players and the team will be good. This player has the ceiling to be right up there with Kittle and Kelce. If he is a pro bowler added in the 3rd round that’s always a good pick. OB clearly wants DW4 to have a high end TE (or two). He saw what Gronk/Hernandez could do for an offense and he’s trying to get something similar here.

Kelce 3.63

Warring 3.86

As you said, this is when you take a chance on a freak athlete at a non prime position. If he can give Houston 75% of what the previous names on this list gave their teams, the offense will take a HUGE step forward. With who was on the board this was a good pick to upgrade a position that could alter the team drastically. I wanted Khalen Sanders at 86 but KC took him at 84.

If they had only been this way with OL.

Honestly, those positions have been handled in the same way. TE was in just as bad, maybe worse shape as OL.

At the end of 2017 season, Griffin was the only kinda/sorta NFL TE on the roster. Fido was done from a health perspective. The Jordans were literally drafted as TE types (one big body, one move) to fill the roster with some upside.

Both units have been redone in total (4 TE adds) and (7 OL adds and a re-sign) since the end of 2017.

A 6 sport athlete (including water polo) in high school Warring only joined the football team as a senior. @kahale23 impressed enough in one season to draw attention from colleges, and became a preferred walk-on SDSUFootball where he had 31 Rec, for 372 Yards and 3 TDs in 2018. pic.twitter.com/84fcSsni5Z

"My third ranked TE after the Iowa duo"

The raw, yet highly athletic Kahale Warring is off the board. The Texans have taken the TE at No. 86 overall.@thorku's thoughts

Completely agree on Akins. Drafting a 26 year old project was stupid.

They call the TE the QBs best friend right?

He already has an excuse lined up. Devlin.[/QUOTE

This isn't an excuse.

Devlin should've been fired after last season. Instead he got his 2 handpicked guys. No excuses for Devlin.

Absolutely love the Warrhing pick.

This guy is going to make this offense very difficult to defend.

That's all great......if they freaking use the TE. 7th fewest targets to TEs last season.

I've always wanted an athletic, dual purpose TE here that can create mismatches and screw up defenses. I've watched TEs wreck the Texans for years, so maybe I'm just envious. This guy legitimately could be that guy. I love the pick. I understand what y'all are saying about O'Brien's usage of the TE position, but hell, he sucks at using most positions. He's been terrible with the OL, but we keep hoping he'll draft more.

Sure As an idea of course it's great.

TE is a Strange position for us. It is a weakness for us for the last couple of years - and our solution is to keep trying to get mid round projects and hope one of them pans out. I am fine with this pick but I am not sure I am happy with that strategy. Just from a need perspective I would have preferred that HB that NE took right after us or one of the WRs. But like I said, we needed more production out of our TEs, if he can provide this I am happy.

I mean, we are really going for those “high upside” guys this draft. All small school projects. I wanna close my eyes and hope it plays out for the best. But Conner McGovern was there. And even if you’re confident with your guard play in Rankin(?), Fulton, Kelemente, Mancz, it still doesn’t hurt to add a potential starter there. Still some good talent on the board but it’s hard to hope for anything more than these next 3 or so picks just ending up on the roster.

None of those guys just started playing football. Gronkowski had a bad back, Hernandez was a gangsta, and Kelce had red flags also. You know who was a project at tight end? Antonio Gates and he was undrafted. I hope he works, but it seems like a lack of a plan like the Cardinals and Giants.

Love the kid - nice athlete.... but exactly how many TE's does one team need? I'm fine with BPA and all that, but it just doesn't make sense to me, OK Griffen gone makes sense, but you drafted two last year and signed one in FA.

Who have you already given up on?

It's about quality, not quantity. Warring has a huge ceiling.

If you want to be upset about TE be upset about them drafting 26 yr old Akins in the 3rd last year.

Personally, I love this pick for 2 reasons. First, as you pointed out, Warring has a huge ceiling, and second, this means the end of Ryan. Griffin.

So what quality te's will be available to draft in the 5th round?

Any other fan base would think this is a ridiculous rhetorical question but we all know it’s possible for these dumb phux to actually do this again on day 3.

The thing everyone seems to be discounting is his ability to block. Hes instantly the most rounded TE on the roster. Thomas is a good receiver but great at blocking. Fells is a good blocker but not a receiving threat. Atkins isn’t great at anything and Griffin should be cut.

Akins is a good athlete in his own right and move TE prospect. Hopefully now that they have guys who fit the measurables for Y TE in Thomas, Fells and Warring they will use Akins as a chess piece. I still like what Akins gives this offense as a more athletic Stephen Anderson type. He's the guy that should've been lining up in the slot when all our WRs were going down. Not Joe Webb.

I keep seeing athletic freak when he's described..

Appears he's a good athlete...really good. but I dunno...when I hear freak athlete I was expecting him to stand out even amongst the best athletes at his position

Just a quick glance at the TEs from this year and it looks like there were a few guys with comparable numbers.

Warring has the size to play in-line and shows to be a willing/capable blocker on film. Needs to refine technique, can lunge and get off balance but has the athleticism to get to the 2nd level and make blocks in space as well as reach blocks on DEs.

Also was moved around formation playing in the slot/wide to create matchup issues. Particularly in redzone get him matched up against a smaller CB and throw a fade route in back corner of endzone let him win the jump ball battle.

I see why Texans valued him so highly! Not a finished product by any means but a moldable athlete who's best football is ahead of him.

John Harris says he's the best athlete in the entire draft!

Warring is slightly more athletic than Akins and bigger. My point is, Akins skill set is limited but will be a solid backup. Thomas is a solid route runner and pass catcher, but cannot block to save his life. I am calling it now Warring will become our best TE very quickly.

Agreed on Warring. Akins is a guy who's measurables/film are similar to Aaron Hernandez. Will be interested to see if we have our version of Gronk/Hernandez going forward!

Jordan Thomas showed promise year 1 as well. Will like to see how he develops going into year 2. I think overall the TE group is going to be put in situations where they can succeed more often than last season. If the OL is getting killed by a particular pass rusher send in Fells to help out. If the OL can handle the rush unleash the young TEs to cause matchup problems and put stress on the defense/open things up for our stud WRs.

Well good to know our third rounder from last year is already no more than a backup.

At least Thomas only cost a 6th

Could be wasted pick was last year for Jordans

Having watched video he's a good athlete. I dont hate the player, I hate how we use our picks. And I hate how our coaches use (or dont) use the players.

Maybe I'm wrong but this feels like an either or scenario: Akins was a waste or Warring is.

They are two different types of players. Will be used in different ways to create matchup problems for defenses. Always possibility one (or both) bust sure. But lets give the offense a chance to take shape with the new pieces. And with the new mind (Carl Smith) in the offensive game planning.

OBrien was the Offensive Coordinator in New England when they drafted Gronkowski and Hernandez in the same draft... and added Alge Crumpler in free agency the same off-season. I don't think adding Warring means we are moving on from Akins and/or Thomas.

They took 2 tight ends last yr and signed Fells. Where is the foot speed outside or in the backfield? Are they just going to hope and pray Fuller comes back? More importantly, stay healthy. Again, another project.
Foot speed is overated. Give me a big target TE that can run decent routes, and incrementally gain unstoppable speed with momentum, and have hands of glue, and can powerfully fight off the defender for the ball...........and that can block..............give me Warring whose upside beyond has still to be determined.

Foot speed is not overrated? So tell me about Ty Hilton or Tyreke Hill. The difference between healthy , prime Gronk and Fedo was foot speed. Gronk could accelerate through contact and Fedo was just a slow footed possession dude.

When you watch the tape of Warring, nothing pops. It's not like he's beating guys, lining up in slot and working guys.

Dude is very fluid for being so big. What I see is an 8-12 yard safety net again and again and again. Has the movement skills to be good. I see he has a high ceiling. We're told he's a very good blocker but no video I've seen really focuses on that.

None of it matters if he's not on the field because of the log jam at the te position. None of it matters if we don't utilize te's like usual.

And while he's not being used, the defense will be hurting for db's. This was a luxury pick. I said it last night and I'll say it again, I imagine Romeo's gotta be pissed about it.

What stud wrs? Texans have 1. Much like the AJ 80 days , the Texans dont believe in giving the qb weapons, but at least AJ had Owen Daniel's and later Foster.
