State of the O-line

That is part of it but they have invested some draft capital and got Nelson last draft with their #1 pick and when he found his feet with that line it made a big difference.
Even Mack their RB started looking good.
That's oline.
I am not against drafting OL. I am not against spending on FA OL.

I'm just saying, Luck kicks our ass when healthy. Good defense, bad defense. Don't matter. Good line, bad line... as long as Luck is healthy they win.

Why not two more TEs?

Maybe he can find one at the senior bowl again

I'm completely happy with the TEs we have (Jordon Thomas was a absolute steal).. we just need a coach who can actually utilize the freaking TE position.

Again.. it full circles back to coaching.

Edit my bad... Jordan Thomas was a 6th round pick so he has no talent in Steelbtexan's eyes..

Damn, should've drafted Blake Bortles #1 overall too.. **** (missed opportunity there)

Dude Andrew Luck is not Satan Manning.. He doesn't strike fear in me at all.. If this team could just get out of their own damn way and stop doing stupid crap we'll beat the absolute crap out of him. Hell we've already done it before.

Justin Reed sucks too since he was a 3rd rounder.. he is horrible and has no talent.

BTW Should've made system dependant Nate Solder the highest paid offensive lineman in NFL history too. Let's just quit and hire Steelbtexan as our G.M. and we can max out our cap having Nate Solder protecting Blake Bortles' blind side... that's the ticket to success right there.

I really hope we get one of the top OTs in this draft - I haven't seen any of them, but by what I've read I prefer Dillard and I wouldn't be opposed to trade up to get him - even if it costs us a 2nd rounder and a late rounder. Khalil is probably not the answer - and even if he is, it is never wrong to have too many good lineman. You can always trade them or bounce one of them around the line somewhere. We need to fix the O-line, that should be our top priority. Going CB in the second round...

I disagree with the bolded. Bouncing guys around the OL can have a detrimental affect on their development and teams don't trade for OL that can't play. They wait until they get cut or hit FA to bring them in for a workout.
What CB prospect do you see being available in the 2nd round that should be an impact player as a rookie?

In his chat yesterday, McClain says that the Texans will absolutely not trade up for Dillard. He believes the Texans will trade back into the 2nd round. And unless an OT falls into their lap in the 1st, they will likely not take one until the 2nd round. Due to the talent avaiable, he states that is likely, they will take a CB first.

Bwhahaha man Pancakes is always wrong. Dude doesn't know what the Texans will do on the draft.

Using the word absolutely, like they told him their plans.

Well this is one time I hope he is right.
The second round is absolutely loaded with talent.

What is the status of Ford's health? I believe he had issues in 2016 & 2017 before coming back strong last year. Is his injury history a concern?

But maybe they will trade up for another player, like 'Bamas Jonah Williams for example ? You know how clever "The General" is right ? Gotta parse each syllable.
I believe he's also said the Texans will not trade Clowney ?
The truth is for all we know the Texans may value, oh say both Tytus Howard and Mitch Hyatt, just about as highly for their system as they do Williams or Dillard ?

Doesn't sound like a bad plan honestly.

I've always said Thomas is a talent.

He's learning to play TE, that's the only reason he was available in the 6th rd. He's very talented and Kelly has done a good job developing him.

I would love Solder to be the LT. He was actually very good towards the end of last yr and the cap wouldn't be maxed out if they had signed Solder. Getting a LT in FA costs big $$$$. You would think you're watching over the McNair's $$$$. I'm for trying something different than what they've been doing within the 15 yrs. It all comes down to cap space (Which they have plenty of) and how much you value protecting your franchise QB.

I was always a Clowney guy, never a Bortles guy. You're confusing me with Texian.

His only major injury was in the 3rd game of the 2016 season, when he suffered a fibula fracture. It was strange that it took him until Aug 2017 to really get back to practice. Following his fracture, his weight got out of control at 350 pounds. He spent all 2017 spring getting back to a reasonable weight. Weight has always been a problem, as he tends to creep up to around 350 too often. He lost weight prior to the Combine...................down to 329............a weight many believe he cannot sustain. Measuring at the Combine at 6'3 1/2", many question his ability to play OT, especially LT in the NFL. It should be noted that during the Combine, he was reported to have "shoulder tightness" whatever that means..............hopefully for him and the team that picks him, it is not a labrum or rotator cuff issue.............but that won't be determined until he is thrown into game action.

Much is made of the Texans OL giving up 62 sacks, which was horrible indeed.

But the Cowboys vaunted OL gave up 56

Even the Packers respected OL gave up 53 and Seattle 51 both with one of the best QB's in the league.

It's not ALL on the OL and coaching

Nice find.
Now if we can convince all concerned that a little dink and dunk is not a bad thing we might see a difference in this offense.

If the Texans get Risner or Howard at RT, I'll feel good about the direction of the OL.

Sounds like Dillard won't be there unless we trade up to 10-13.

We are gonna have to bank on a LT in the 2nd or 3rd, probably.

Defense in round 1 appears to be the move barring a trade up/down.

Probably true, but let me rephrase. If they don't take two OLs in the first four picks, I'll be pissed. We finally have a franchise QB, he needs to be protected.
I really hope we get Risner or McGary in the first and Hyatt in the mid round.
There are others but I am primarily thinking Tackle.
I rank them:-
Jonah Williams, Andre Dillard, Jawaan Taylor, Cody Ford, Dalton Risner, Kaleb McGary, Garrett Bradbury, Chris Lindstrom.

.

According to some, 2nd round isn't talented enough for Devlin & O'Brien. Look what they did with the last two they had.

Duh... they were starting XSF.

Weren't very vaunted last year.

Xsf only started 8 games last year and many said he was playing much better... they gave up plenty of sacks before he was forced to start... over half I believe

Lots of blind people out there. I watched most of those games.............and from what I observed, he was entirely deserving of his 2018 PROFOOTBALLFOCUS grade of 43.

This draft is really critical for two position groups - OL and Corner. I think they need to come away with two players at each spot ….

I'd like that, too: two OL and two DBs with an RB, DL, and LB or WR thrown into the mix. But if they diverge from that just a little and are still significantly better this season, I'll be quite happy...Unless one or two of the guys by-passed at positions of need turn out to be far better than the guys they take.

Thinking about it a bit more, I'll be at least somewhat happy if none of their selections turn out to be busts.
Am I lowering my expectations or simply being more realistic? Like most of us, I have high hopes but realize the actual bar needs to be set lower.

What may ultimately determine this teams success next season is if Gaine can find find a nugget or two in the UFAs.
And perhaps one more good FA after the draft.

Bank on it. He means Undrafted Free Agents. Every year across the NFL, a few UDFA's have an impact way beyond their draft status. Why can't more of those guys be ours?

Yes, but rarely do UDFA's make an impact as a rookie

Arian Foster went into the draft with "draft concerns" and didn't get drafted. He was rated as high as the 5th round. Which makes no difference really since he ended up a UDFA and we got him. Man would I love to be able to get another RB like him again, in any round.

Yep. I wonder if he is the type of guy our new "character focused" drafting will avoid

There are two in particular I think that are similar to Foster going in to this draft - Trayveon Williams and Bruce Anderson.
It will be interesting to watch their progress in the nfl.

There is nothing new about the Texans highly if not overvaluing character...it discussed to death on this board from nearly day one...Foster was more a character, different type of dude that usually plays football, over a bad guy.

That's right, but it seems Gaine and the new character hire are trying a new method of character evaluation
