2019 Texans Player Visits, Pro Days, etc.

What if he runs a 4.5 at his pro day?

I would definitely consider him.

After watching tape of him, he's very technically sound, he needs to be because he's lacking a 2nd gear. Drafting him means you're drafting a bigger version of KJax. So I think I would pass.

I'm never taking a CB that runs a 4.64 40 in the 2nd rd.

I’d be more worried about drafting two corners in the first two rounds, that share the same last name. The horrors listening to Vandemier discern the difference play by play, lol. Guess one would just go by Greedy?

Seriously what your most concerned about is foot speed. His backpedal and technique (other than tackling, goes to high and doesn’t wrap up for me) is solid but he is bit of a long strider. Next level he maybe will convert to free safety, but would have to improve tackling ie., Buchanan esk.

Bigger, slower KJax. He ran a 4.48 at the combine. And this guy's pro day time wasn't 4.50, it was 4.55 which is within the add .1 pro day to combine rule of thumb.

I'd say mussop's comparison to Kam Chancellor is apt and his best chance is to move to SS.

He doesn’t blow anybody up. That is what I’ll miss most from KJax, and wish ownership agreed. Again with Cam, he may move like him but doesn’t carry a load. Think he is just a big corner until proven otherwise.

Interesting:

A rarity: #LSU CB Greedy Williams has had no visits and it appears no private workouts, either. Some dinners and meetings, but that’s all. It’s not good, it’s not bad. It’s just rare. Only other player I can remember like this was Tyler Eifert, who had no questions coming out.

Do you think it’s a coaching issue for Joejuan Williams Re: tackling?

Zach Cunningham had the same concerns coming out of Vandy.

Where are you getting this?

According to zerlien
  • Aggressive and reliable tackle-finisher in space

Excellent point!

Also both share ideal measureables for position and high IQ.

Watch game film. Goes high, goes for the strip have yet to see him square up anybody in space. Sticky in press corner at the line of scrimmage, uses combination of arm length and strength but that won’t be enough to manhandle NFL wideouts. If I remember game against Georgia, Ridley found seam and beat him but Joejuan could have still wrapped him up, instead tried to rip the ball out, Ridley spun and danced into the end zone. Also think Ridley ran in 4.65 neighbored @ combine. So all things equal, poor tackling technique.

There are occasional pro days that are laser timed, but most are hand timed. With any pro day that is hand timed, it's a good rule of thumb to add a tenth or so to the time.

If a guy runs 4.6 at the Combine and is hand timed at 4.5 at his pro days, he's a 4.6 guy.

Also, a lot of pro day measurements aren't "officially" verified. The reason being so teams running the workouts can manipulate the data to try and make that player rise or fall depending on how they want the board to go.

That's why you send your own reps to pro days and bring guys in for private workouts.

One poor play doesn’t define a player. Not sure what else you watched but these videos say different.

I don't know why? Maybe trying to get some team that wants AJ to move up?

Teams will bring in players they think division opponents will select to develop their own scouting report on them. Not necessarily players they are targeting.

Also could look at them in situations talent outweighs need at pick if the draft board gets wacky.

Understand that, but from what I see on tape it’s a fairly consistent tendency to get grabby instead of securing body with two hands, that was just one example off the top of my head that stood out.

He has to be perfect because his athletic ability doesn't allow for mistakes. I like him as a safety/big nickle. He's a different body type but I see him in a Glover Quin role.

Worth a 3rd but I wouldn't spend a 2nd on him.

Check your PM's

Liked him because of high character and measureables Texans value. Speed is one thing but fundamentals is another, think your right, bump him down to 3rd if there and haven't selected CB already.

Scout notes that got published. Don't want to get caught up in an example. Dude should move to SS or drafted later than the 2nd.

You don’t have a link and are just misremembering. No harm no foul.
If Sherman ran a 4.28 it would be easily found on the internet. Just admit you got this one wrong. Doesn’t hurt Sherman’s standing as a player obviously.

Nope. It's also in wikipedia.

Across the board improvement on his combine.

On March 17, 2011, Sherman participated at Stanford's pro day and attempted to improve on his combine performance. He performed the 40-yard dash (4.28s), 20-yard dash (2.56s), 10-yard dash (1.58s), vertical jump (37"), broad jump (11'0"), short shuttle (4.29s), and three-cone drill (6.72s).

Maybe you can find an article on his pro day. I couldn't despite it being "easy." Players run again at their pro days to improve their times and virtually always do so.

Sherman was raw coming out having switched from WR. But let's see what he lists 1st as a strength:

MTD: What are some of your strengths on the football field?

RS: My speed and physicality.

Sherman was clocked at his pro day between 4.4 and 4.52.

What? Where did you read this lie? Sherman's one weakness as a CB is fast guys beat him deep.
getting beat deep doesn't necessarily come due to 40 time. Hip swivel, back pedal and being bumped is more often the cause; see Kareem Jackson first season as an example of the latter.

Little is pretty solid pass defender even at LT and if he could just get into more of a consistent mode, I'd like him in second. Not sure our coaching can encourage him up.

Yep. Our coaching on the OL puts a ceiling on guys. That’s why I want them to spend and draft highly on the OL hoping the talent makes up for coaching.

It didn’t matter who was coaching Joe Thomas and it wont matter who coaches Quenton Nelson. They had received enough good coaching to make use of their immense talents!

Totally disagree unless the player is fully, completely developed. Otherwise pick someone who has a chance if beung coached ti their potential. That's not OL until Devlin is gone.

Sounds like you’re agreeing but incapable of outright saying such.

Joe Thomas and Quenton Nelson were coached up enough and are so talented they succeed no matter who is coaching OL.

My stance is take a polished product that is talented and they will succeed even with Devlin coaching the OL. Jonah Williams for example best technician in the draft will be an excellent player no matter who is coaching him in the NFL.

No, but I like players who are already students/tacticians. My point is anyone who "needs to develop" or change positions is not suited to the void.

And you're projecting. Joe Thomas went 1.3. He wasn't a projection to anything.

#MissSt pass-rusher Montez Sweat spent time earlier this week visiting the #Raiders and now he’s on a visit with the #Texans, source said. At 23, Houston would need to trade up.

BYU LB Sione Takitaki remains busy, visiting the #Texans today after a visit with the #Chargers, source said. He's had a bunch of other visits, plus 8 private workouts with LB coaches. A late riser?

Sweat also added that the coaches showed him Jadeveon Clowney film on how they used him in RACs defense. How he rushes and drops into coverage. #Texans

Sweat liked his visit with the #Texans and how they operated as a group.
