2019 Texans Player Visits, Pro Days, etc.

My uderstanding is that he played out of position in college @ NT as he would appear to be a natural 3

My understanding is that he played out of position in college @ NT as he would appear to be a natural 3-tech, does not possess the length to play the edge.
He also played his college ball in the minors (non power-5 at UofH) so how would he have done in the majors in the SEC or Big 10 ?
OK he has some similarities to Donald but that doesn't automatically make him a contender for being the next NFL defensive player of the year.
Now about the weight - he is smallish and if he's trimmed down to 281 for his PD then in a brutal 16-game NFL schedule he might drop to well under 280 and
that's just too small for an NFL DT.

I get why you would think this.

Dude is just a ballplayer who is fast enough to playn LB and strong enough to play DT. A very rare athlete that a good coaching staff will know how to use to make him a star level player.

His floor is Grady Jarret, His Ceiling is Donald.

Interesting that no one has really mentioned Isaiah Johnson's results. Reports stated that scouts were impressed and his stock is moving up.....substantially since they mentioned a possible RD2 selection.

His official results:
6'-2" / 208 lbs / 33" Arms / 8.75" Hands
40 Time: 4.40
Bench: Tweaked a pectoral muscle on 9th Rep.
Vertical: 36.5"
Broad Jump: 133.0" (3rd Best in CB Class)
3-Cone: 6.81 (5th Best in CB Class)
20 TD Shuttle: 4.06 (2nd Best in CB Class)
Change of Direction and Ball Skills: Impressive
Former WR who was converted to CB.

I've liked IJo for a while now and his upside should be extremely positive. I also like the physicality he brings to the position. This is a guy I really hope the Texans and Gaine have targeted.

.
Find the 2016 OU-UH game on YouTube. It was Oliver’s first college game as a true freshman. Against an o-line that will all be in the NFL. Then ask how he would have done at these power schools.

My guess is that Oliver would have done much better had he gone to a bigger program. He would have been surrounded with more talent and not seen as many double and triple teams as he did at UH.

He's 6'2". Mack & Miller are 1" taller and Donald is 1" shorter. You're being too precise with the porridge.
You want to compare him to a couple edge OLB guys in Mack & Miller as that's cetainly not Oliver and Donald is not a 3-4 DE.
I would be surprised if he's not drafted by a 4-3 team.

You were talking edge needing more length. Mack & Miller are edge guys.

3-4 DEs are not true edge guys and very commonly would/have played DT in a 4-3. Gary Walker says hi.

If you want to talk 4-3 Edge then 6'1" Freeney & 6'2" Mathis were one of the best duos around.

Of course it wouldn't be surprising for him to go to a 4-3 team, most teams are.

You went Gary Walker on me, you'e shxxing me right, so what about Seth Payne ?
Yea those are 5th and 4th round guys, OK ?
Stubby guys like that, or like Oliver aren't really 3-4 DE types, especially in the first round.

What about Payne? He was an excellent NT who actually pushed the pocket although undoubtedly not having your desired measurables.

3-4s are a minority defense in the league and DE is not the premier pass rush position on the team. But you're just moving goalposts now. Oliver being a minor bit shorter than ideal is more than made up by his vastly greater than average athleticism & instinct.

Sure you could stick Oliver anywhere, including end in a 3-4 but that doesn’t mean it’s his natural position. We’ll see, but I expect team using 4-3 to draft him.

Listen I love him. If he’s there @ #23 (so doubtful point its mute) draft him and pair him with Clowney.

Does any draft site or publication ever post any visits, (to the Texans), by offensive linemen .... not the usual suspects of late round and free agent types, but the early round, bonafide - starter prospects ?

I haven’t seen any, but maybe someone else knows of something.

I'm tempted to like this because that's the only way I can unlike it.

Vanderbilt CB Joejuan Williams visits Texans

At 6-4, 211 pounds, Williams is one of the biggest corners in the draft. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.64 seconds at the NFL scouting combine and bench pressed 225 pounds 17 times.

The Nashville native recorded 61 tackles, two for losses, four interceptions and 14 pass breakups last season as a junior before declaring early for the draft. The second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection had 39 tackles and 10 pass breakups as a sophomore

This is good news to me. This is the kind of CB we need IMO. Jam the hell out of WRs. Stop letting opposing QBs throw these quick rhythm passes.

I project Texans will target him with one of those 2nd rd picks, if he impresses them as much as I think he will :d:

Stick Clowney's 4.53 ass on them. 4.64 ain't gonna hack it unless he tackles them.

And I agree with your point in general.

IMO that's just too slow for an NFL CB so this guy, especially with his size, would seem to be headed to safety for his best chance to make it.

He’s very smart, reads and reacts well, closing speed is NFL. Hoping slow forty is what loser team war rooms think and he slips to Texans in second. Yes he could transition to safety but like him to get a shot press corner.

That's Sherman's combine number coming off a Senior Bowl hamstring. His pro day was a 4.28.

No way thats a accurate time. I'm sure all teams adjusted that time. He wouldn't of lasted into the 5th round if that time was close to accurate.

many Grade him as a first round Talent.

Joe Haden 4.57
Antonio Brown 4.56
Camp Chancellor 4.67

4.55 is plenty fast enough for a big physical cornerback. He doesn’t look slow on film

They may very well have made it a 4.38 or 4.4, but that's a far cry from a 4.64.

Look, I am not 40 fascinated. You won't find me knocking a prospect for not being 4.2 or 4.3 something but 4.64 just doesn't cut it as an NFL CB.

Joejuan is not a quick twitch guy like Greedy but far more complete. Be nice to get both that way you can adjust coverage for specific match-ups. Really apples and oranges even though both are corners, if that makes any sense, lol

The old me, lol

Going to take this weekend off, maybe finally do a real mock, of course BL induced :wesmantexanfan:

Process is so fluid and always more trades and movement than expected. All you can do is select best fit possible then hope Texan board room agrees? BPA is cliche, been hung up on that for far too long.

I'm never taking a CB that runs a 4.64 40 in the 2nd rd.
It's not common. The Lions took Tabor in the 2nd after he ran a 4.6 at the combine. The Panthers have taken a couple of CBs in the 3rd over the past 2 years that ran in the 4.6's. I think there are teams that could look a Williams as a CB (like those that are running a Seattle scheme). But I would guess most are looking at him as a Safety that can come down and cover TEs. The Texans in the 3rd might be a good fit as they are looking for depth at Safety.
