2018 Texans Player Transactions

because PS churns are normally just to get similar athletes to what you are playing against that week. Which is why I said maybe they did it to mimic Chris Thompson, but he appears to be out this week. Does Washington have another smaller, shifty, back that is a receiving threat? It could be insurance since they released Ervin, but i highly doubt it

K. Bibbs is a similar type of player for the Redskins

Didn't mean to imply that Ferguson and Foreman were "like for like" or similar backs. Just trying to "connect the dots" as to why they signed Ferguson (a guy they cut from the PS in 2016) back on the PS now. Just seems odd to do it now when they are evaluating Foreman on his return from the PUP list. If Foreman does well then everything is OK. If not, then they may need some RB bodies stashed on the PS in case Miller or Blue get hurt. To me it's just a sign that maybe they aren't too confident in Foreman's return. JMO.
Who can be confident in Foreman after an achilles? That’s such a nasty/seriously taxing injury.

The Texans have signed OT David Steinmetz to the PS. They have cut CB Andre Chachere from the PS to make room.z

Steinmetz is a mountain at 6'8" 321. During Purdue’s pro day, Steinmetz recorded a 115-inch broad jump, which would have been the second-best for a lineman at the Combine. He also posted a 33-inch vertical leap. That would have been the fourth-best result for a lineman at the Combine. His main criticism is rawness with footwork that has limited him with lateral movement. He essentially played RT 5 years in college without significant injury. He appears to be an intriguing developmental RT.

If he's not ready yet, he'll end up being a starter in no time on our 0-line.

At least FO is active in trying to keep this team winning. I was expecting a move in this direction.
Steinmetz, while raw, is at least experienced at tackle.
Hopefully he can be a plug and play guy - we need help on that line.

any info on his blocking strength, core and anchor? Set him up next to Lamm then Watson can drift that way if needed away from the left opponent.

He's reported to be strong at the point and controls defenders once engaged. But he still has problems with leverage. And his lack of good footwork as I mentioned earlier sets up for poor lateral movement. These seem to be problems that can be coached up given some time.

I'm intrigued. I'll have to go look at some video of him. I'd imagine 6'8" would present a challenge in maintaining leverage especially when Edge rusher want to dip & turn the corner.

But wow... 6'8" 321

I liked the Jamerson signing, although I haven't noticed him much specifically on ST.. my main concern with activating Foreman was having to cut a solid ST contributor, since the unit has been performing so well

Anyone have any notes on Jamerson's ST play? TIA

Most interesting to note is that Buddy Howell is still on roster as a pure ST. Listed as RB but has not had a single carry this season. They value his ST production.

With Coates being released and already having passed waivers, would have expected Kayvon Webster to have taken up the 53rd spot by now............strange, but we remain at 52...........wonder if there are 2nd thoughts and we see a PS player elevated instead............should know shortly.

Guys, I got the call, heading to Philly. I run a 5.0 40, but do know a lot about the slot. Cannot believe I beat Twitter to the punch on this

Seriously, must be some WR or CB help coming to the roster. Maybe we will have a Vyncint Smith emergence??

Finally, Webster just got the call to make the roster whole. Hope he lasts more than the 2 snaps he did in his last return attempt.

The Texans made the move official, placing receiver Demaryius Thomas on injured reserve with a ruptured Achilles’ tendon. Thomas will undergo surgery to repair the damage.

The Texans also placed cornerback Kayvon Websterand inside linebacker Brian Peters on injured reserve. Webster just returned from injured reserve last week but injured his thigh after only eight snaps against the Eagles.

Houston promoted receiver Steven Mitchell from the practice squad to fill Thomas’ roster spot.

Steven Mitchell.

Who Dat??

A rookie out of USC, Mitchell Jr. signed with the Los Angeles Rams as a rookie free agent after the 2018 NFL Draft. Mitchell Jr. spent time on the Rams practice squad up until the time the Texans signed him to their practice squad. Checking in at 5-foot-10, Mitchell Jr. struggled with knee injuries in college but in two seasons with the Trojans, he posted 65 receptions for 870 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 13.4 yards a reception.

He made 8 snaps this time...

I don't think I have to be a doctor to infer that Webster has been rushed back not once, but twice.

I would agree with this if it were his Achilles he had re injured, but its a hip flexor. Ive heard from a friend that would know, apparently they don’t run for conditioning. If my friend is correct they do most of their conditioning on a versaclimber. This would offer an explanation for the rash of hamstring injuries earlier this season as well as Webster’s hip flexor. The forces on certain muscle groups are quite high when sprinting, like slightly over 5 times bodyweight on the hamstrings. You can’t mimic that in a gym, you cannot get close. If i ran the sports performance department I would employ a track coach and sprinting technique would be worked on weekly

That's a ton of good science that says the player is not in game condition i.e. he is being rushed back after injury.

Being rushed back is not just a reinjury of the same injury. You didn't disagree but supported well the point.

I find your first sentence confusing. I get that there is science that says returning to play before an injury has healed can lead to re injury, I’m not disputing that. My initial response to your quote was due to the fact you said he has been rushed back not once but twice. His first quad strain might have had nothing to do with his Achilles issues. Sprinting requires a HIGH degree of coordination between the involved muscle groups, the working muscles have to turn on and off to very high degrees very rapidly. He might have over strided causing excess stress on the hip flexor, perhaps his leg was hit while he flexing the hip straining the muscle. There could be any number of causes for a hip flexor when sprinting, that don’t involve being rushed back from injury or a lack of conditioning. Even athletes that are in peak form - track athletes at the Olympics/world championships fall victim to muscles strains. As I said in my first post, the forces put on the body during sprinting are extremely high

Regarding his re injury, Webster initially strained his quad/hip flexor in early Oct ( he was IRed on 10/9), and he was reactivated 10 weeks later. Doc would certainly know better than me as I’m on the performance side of the equation but 10 weeks seems appropriate for a grade 2 strain, however given that he re injured it perhaps it wasn’t completely healed

I find your first sentence confusing. ...

Not to speak for AT, but while an injury is coming back other muscles and structures are over loading to compensate. If the original injury doesn't get back to 100%, which is rare with many injuries, the body is always compensating. So compensatory injuries happen. All those surrounding muscles & structures become more likely to failure.

I'm sure CnD will correct me if I bastardized what I've tried to learn from him.

I am honestly, not that invested in being "right" here, so I have no response to details. It just appears to my non-medical/sport science brain that player wasn't ready (conditioning/lack of true repetitions/compensating in another body area, etc) to play football.
