Texans random thought of the day

Posted here, as opposed to NFL, as Eric Reid directly mentions McNair and how the anthem thing has played out from the players while giving more details on why he feels the way he does about Malcolm Jenkins. 7 min video, very eye opening.

How am I not surprised Grand Dragon McClain was involved. I'll give it to Reid he is a well spoken guy, even though his math might be a little off in some instances the message was loud and clear. Reporter said he played for Pittsburgh!? Cmon man!

The reason Jackson was fired was Haley. Over ruled/undermined Jackson any time he could thinking he would be next in line.

which makes it even better than they fired Hue first, waited a couple hours then fired Haley. I know they probably informed both before the media knew, but I like to think that Haley saw Hue being fired, got excited that he "won" the power struggle, smuggly answered his phone expecting to be excepting the interim HC position than gets hit with the hammer lol

Could Todd Haley and Buttchin O'Brien coexist? Just got fired in Cleveland. He actually has a track record of some success offensively.

One could easily make the case (just like with OB) that Haley’s track record is directly correlated to Warner/Big Ben.

His scheme with the Browns left a lot to be desired. Seemed like he was having guys rely on winning with superior talent rather than scheming them open.

That works well when you’ve got prime Larry Fitzgerald and Antonio Brown... not so much with the Browns skill players.

Knock Haley all you want the Browns begged him to be on the staff and to make the group of losers up there a cohesive unit was a daunting task given how many mistakes that franchise makes.

You know what? Bill Belichek is only a good coach because of Brady . He sucked before that. See how that works?

I remember a Steelers squad that looked a little lost when Haley left and all I need to do is look at his track record of player development to let me know he has a proven method. Who has O'Brien coached up and developed into all pro type players without relying on "skill" (wierd comment btw)

Speaking on scheme that's what brought Haley to Cleveland, seems like a broad subjective stroke to say he doesn't have a good scheme. I think the opposite.

https://brownswire.usatoday.com/2018/04/22/film-room-todd-haleys-offense-can-thrive-in-cleveland/

"What I believe in is playing to every player’s strength that you have as best you can…Putting players into position to succeed, playing to their skill-set. Wherever I have been, that is what I have really tried to do. Whether I was a position coach, coordinator, head coach, I’ve tried to put guys in position to succeed.” - Todd Haley

Edit: as far as Haley undermining or conspiring to take the HC job, well it's a dog eat dog world. Survival of the fittest. Nobody knows that better than Haley. Hue is a nice guy .. you know where those guys finish.

Haley may have talent but isn’t worth the trouble he brings.

Haley is a cancer.

Haley can’t get along with players or coaches.

I remember bad play calling for Pittsburgh in Haley’s final year that cost them big games even in the playoffs.

People in Pittsburgh couldn’t wait for him to be gone. Including Tomlin and Rothlesberger.

Pittsburgh was ranked third on offense in the NFL Haleys last year. Id take my chances. OBrien needs to relegate and focus on actually managing the team as a whole. Football is a passionate, intense game and for all the the malaise about how Haley treats players I could say Obrien comes from the same 'tough love' school of thought, except that Obriens offenses have never even cracked top 10 since he's been in charge.

Or we could sign Hue Jackson to come in here and keep everybody's spirts lifted up, crack jokes. Make sure every guy is feeling good and smiles alot. Plays nonstop Bobby McFerrin's "dont worry be happy" that might work too. :kitten:

Jackson made it clear over and over that Josh Gordon who did not show up for offseason/preseason training would not start at the beginning of the regular season in lieu of those players that worked their butts off. “I am not about entitlement for players, I am about work. I am about when guys are here, the guys that have been here the whole time working and busting their tail -- and they are on the team and they play receiver, too -- that if a guy is ready and up for the game, why should I start him in front of them when they have done the most work? Right is right.”He was trying to bring some discipline to the Browns. So what did Haley do? He put him in as a starter right from the get go.

Haley would have the same problem here, that he had with the Browns. He would focus his efforts on undermining the head coach instead of building a decent offense. Haley has been despised at every single stop he has been at

too bad that those guys who were 'about work' and 'busting their tails off' couldnt run a 4.2 and catch the ball on the fly.

Gordon ran a 4.42, Antonio Callaway ran a 4.41 and has very good hands. But we can ignore facts I suppose.

Bottom line is when you are the OC your boss is the HC. When your HC gives you and order and you purposely do not do it that's insubordination which is grounds for termination in any field. Haley went against Hue many times in their short stint together and was causing division in the locker room

There I go using superlatives too much. I should have looked up the actual 40 time and compared it to every other wideout CLE had in order to make the assessment that Gordon was the best player they had on the WR corps. My mistake I'll be more diligent moving on.

On your second point, then they should have fired him if it was so 'insubordinate' and policy changing. Fact of the matter is Hue Jackson was a joke of a coach, good guy no doubt, but a joke of a coach who had way too much leash to begin with. He begs to bring in another offensive mind for help, then gets his panties in a bunch and wants to regain more of the playcalling?

Even funnier is that the Browns thing Gregg BOUNTYGATE Williams is a better interim option so I guess in the end Haley got what he deserved. LOL

Division in the locker room occured when Hue Jackson went bipolar:

They did fire him, why do you think he got fired? It was a direct result of how he disobeyed orders, and how he undermined those above him. I get it Hue wasn't a good HC, he should've lost his job last season after going 0-16 but you still can't go against your boss and expect to keep your job.

You guys know that Hue wasn't exactly a HC savant. Haley probably thought Hue was going to get fired somewhere along the line and wanted to be in line for the HC position.

I liken O'Brien's plight to the same plight that faced Hue.....he should've been fired after his 2-14 season and my guess, he's not interested in hiring a top flight OC b/c if the offense has success and the team still slips, his replacement is already on the staff. It's called self preservation.

4-12 season you mean? I don't think OB is not hiring an OC because of self preservation, how often do interim head coaches actually retain the HC job or even remain on the staff for the following season? news flash it doesn't happen all that often. I think he wants someone that he trusts fully with those play calling duties, as do a lot of HC with regards to their side of the ball that they made their bread and butter. His first protege, Godsey, was very bad as OC. He quickly moved on, now for the last few years he has been grooming Sean Ryan, expect him to take over at OC next season

Yes I know he was fired, my point is that they did it 7 games after "insubordinateGate" .. I dont blame ownership for firing them both, hell they should have fired Williams too, but at least the defense looks competent. Haley did improve the offensive scoring by a touchdown per game for whatever thats worth on the worst team in football. All Im saying is that Haley is a winner, he has a proven track record of making marginal players great and i think his no nonsense approach would actually work well with Obrien since he, himself, is the same way. Maybe there can only be 2 grumpy, pound my chest head coaches on a team like the Highlander?

Are you what your record says you are? Too early to tell.

Texans have a better record than these handpicked teams: Packers, Ravens, Eagles, Vikings, Bears, Broncos, and Steelers.

Don’t forget the Titans and Jags are still in the hunt for division champ.

Texans are blessed with an easy schedule and weak division.

Well Haley does have a better season record under his belt at 10-6 in KC as a head coach so maybe Buttcrack McQuack doesnt want too many successful people around him. You know the whole "only one captain per ship" philosophy.

it's kinda early for this post don't ya think? It's been what 1 day?

The WR Steven Mitchell (former USC) that we just signed to the PS has an "interesting" injury history. He tore his right ACL in 2013. Then he tore his left ACL in 2016. Last year, he was struck with with a significant groin injury in Sept followed by a significant shoulder injury in Oct.......both injuries slowed him for the rest of the season.

We really like bringing in injured players

again pay no mind to mid season PS signings/releases. You generally keep a few key guys on your PS that you hope to develop the rest you rotate out with players based on your matchups so you can get guys who can mimic whats you are going to go up against

That one 10-6 season was preceded by 4-12 and followed by 5-8. Did I mention in his only playoff appearance Haley's Chiefs got their butts waxed 30-7 by Baltimore at home in Arrowhead.
Success by Haley has never been sustained. Where ever he's gone, he's managed to screw it up.

He was a really good OC when the Cards made the playoffs with Warner/Fitz/Bolden etc...

so you're saying the players make the coach?

I'm saying that it doesn't matter how good a coach is of he doesn't have the talent to work with. A coach can make players better but the more talented the player is the greater the chance for success.

And good/great coaches take a very active role in the process player selection.

That's why the synergy between Gaine/BOB is so important.

Regardless of how much input you think Ricky or BOB had in players acquisition the fact that they weren't on the same page meant it was never going to work out. Gaine/BOB may or may not work out, but atleast they're on the same page when it comes to the type of players they want on the team and are willing to do things like add salary during the season to add these types of players.

I don’t know how to process your new found optimism and positivity.

It’s strange.

They're still a 9-7 team talentwise, maybe 10-6 due to the schedule.

But I like the 1st draft with the GM/HC who are more into finding players than politics. I've always said they have to go about acquiring players differently even if that means trading/adding payroll at midseason like the contenders do. (Pats/Saints/Rams/Eagles all added guys thru trade and finally the Texans did too.

This tells me Cal has taken over and is letting his GM do his job. Hopefully he doesn't interfere with talent acquisition and just signs the checks.

Hopefully Gaine drafts/signs another couple All pro guys so that Bill OBrien can finally become a good coach. :kitten:

in all fairness Rick did trade a conditional 7th round pick, for the corpse of Derrick Mason lol

So the former GM didn't make any type of moves to keep this team competitive?

more bad than good, but he did try somewhat I guess. As I alluded to above the only mid season trade Rick ever made was a conditional 7th for a 36 or 37 year old Derrick Mason who we later released in December. I can't get to upset with Rick's lack of mid season trades as that's a relatively new trend in the NFL, but doesn't change that our new GM did it to keep us competitive after our team suffered a big loss and that is a reason to be optimistic

Under the Kubiak era we went 10-6 one year, then followed that up with 12-4. The defense went from terrible to great. So I don't get this chain of thought by many. People want to give Gaine all the credit now for certain moves. At first people were using the excuse of not having a first or second. Called these olinemen backups etc. Now that we're 5-3, oh its look at what the new GM is doing. Oh they are on the same page etc etc. Not once did people say Kubiak and Smith were on the sheet of music. They said Kub was calling all the shots and Smith was only a yes man. Forget the fact that we were a top offensive and defensive team who had a legit shot.

Of course you dont get it.

I didn't like the backup strategy (Still Dont)

I like the draft that Gaine had, better than any draft that Ricky had.

I'm glad they are making trades to help the team. Something that Ricky never did.

Smithiak never had a true contender despite those glorious 12-4/10-6 seasons. In fact BOB has done as much record wise in the playoffs with Ricky or despite Ricky as Kubiak ever did.

I've got hope for the 1st time in a long time that the GM is competent and the franchise is headed in the right direction. It's really not a hard thing for most to understand.

If Scaub doesn't have his foot crushed we are winning it all that year. The hell you talking about @steelbtexan ? Never had a contender? Kubiak turned a team of nothing into a championship contender, and O'Brien took over the majority of the nucleus and proceeded to be average at best while already being staffed up. Go look at the team Kubiak took over and get back to me.
