Texian's 2017 Post Combine Mock.

Patriots are going to sign Stephon Gilmore. Looks like they think this is a really bad DB class too.

Or maybe they just wanted a couple of veterans at important spots instead of rookies.

Did they give away a mid round draft pick to get him?

Pats got a pick back in the Allen trade. They moved back from late 4th round to early 6th round and got a solid vet to backup Gronk in return.

Moving back in the draft is not an indictment on the talent available in the draft. Quite the opposite really. It's a deep draft class which means good players will get pushed further down the board.

Honest question who was the last OT out of Alabama that turned into a good pro? Greg Robinson and DJ fluker both had to move to guard. It's an honest question does their scheme and talent tend to make their tackles look better.

Chris Samuels 2000-2009
Andre Smith 2009-

Samuels was a beast. I disagree on Smith he's been a career under achiever. Throw in Chance Wormack as another first round bust/under achiever.

The question wasn't who's been an all out beast, just who's been a good pro. Smith's spent a few seasons as a good pro.

I frankly don't care anyway and was just trying to give some answer to a question posed.

Gotcha, even considering Smith it hasn't such a good run for the tide, especially recently. I am still mixed on Robinson, he moved well, but didn't wow like you would expect from the top prospect. Not a given he can handle athletic edge guys at LT in the pros well enough to be more than adequate.

If Kelly is on PS that means any team can take him. At that point you're better off cutting either Oz or Savage. More than likely Savage since cutting Oz would be a $25M cap hit; $6M more than if he just sit him.

Does Oz have an PS eligibility left?

Well, since this issue has been solved, I'd run with Kelly as QB3 behind Romo and Savage. If his injury is enough reason for us to get away with stashing him on IR or PS, then I'm all for that and carrying only 2 QBs.

I wouldn't feel comfortable playing a season with 2 QBs made of glass. I'd want a third on the active roster. A slight breeze could take Romo and Savage out, leaving us with Lechler as our QB.

If Romo goes down, I sign someone like Weeden or Yates. Those are emergency guys that have experience in our system and are going to be floating around if we need them. They don't need a ton of prep time to step into the QB2 role and don't require a 53 spot otherwise.

Would really like to see Bolles at #25 but he'll be off the board far sooner. Overall, this is a weak OT class but the 2-3 guys at the top will be solid starters at the next level and could be gone by 25. That could make things tough....OL wise.

Wow so much for getting him in the second or third round at probably pushing up into the first round.

Buyer beware,

He has the same injury KJo has and sometimes it takes 2 surgeries to get it right. Could be yr 3 before you get what you think your getting.

James Madison's workhorse, Khalid Abdullah, ran a 4.60 40, and had a solid performance with his drills. Abdullah is a quality high production running back with great vision and instincts displaying impressive agility and movement (makes consecutive moves in a short area). He shows terrific burst and can one-cut like the best of them.

Mid- or late-round target: Nathan Peterman, QB, Pittsburgh

If the Texans can’t land a quarterback in the first round, Pitt’s Peterman would be a solid option for them later in the draft. While he may not have the upside of a player like Mahomes, Peterman’s skillset could fit in nicely in O’Brien’s system. His pocket discipline, quick release, and ability to get through his progressions all bode well for his chances of success at the next level. Peterman showed good placement on short to intermediate routes, but also has the ability to air it out and ranked third in the nation last season with a 125.5 QB Rating on deep pass attempts.

Stats to know: Had the nation’s No. 2 passer rating when pressured at 114.7.

Any QB drafted by the Texans will need to handle a high level of pressure

I approach the 2017 NFL Draft with some consternation. 2016 and Bob McNair shot the Houston Texans in the foot for the 2017 Marathon. McNair spending $128MM for 3 players in 2016 tied the Texans hands in 2017. Texans also ended 2016 with rumors of discontent in the Boardroom. I don't expect those personalities to become BFFs over the off season. There was much speculation that O'Brien was on his way out in 2016. I believe the Texans are now in a similar situation as the LSU Tigers and Les Miles were in starting the 2016 season. I expect things will get get worse and not any better. Unfortunately odds are that O'Brien is coaching his last season as a Texan. That doesn't bode well for drafting players in 2017 with a high probability of new Head Coach and system being in place in 2018. This is the bed that Bob McNair has made so we must now sleep in it.

THE MOCK.

PICK #25, The Texans are on the clock. WE HAVE A TRADE!

The Texans have traded their 1st RD, 25th pick and their 3rd RD, 89th pick to the San Francisco 49ers for their 2nd RD. 34th pick, 3rd RD. 66th pick and 4th RD. 109th pick. (San Francisco selects; Patrick Mahomes) SF has a bigger void at QB than Texans, moved up for a QB 5 yr. contract. Points, Texans = 865; SF = 896

With the 34th pick in the 2nd RD of 2017 NFL Draft the Houston Texans select:

Rd 2 (34) - 1A. = Garrett Bolles, OT Utah; 1B. = Cam Robinson, OT Alabama; 1C. = Dion Dawkins, OT, Temple

RD 2 (57) - Nathan Peterman, QB Pittsburgh (My favorite QB in this draft, IMHO, best feet and release, many comparisons to Kirk Cousins, see Clemson and Penn St games)

RD 3 (66)
- Jumaine Elemunor, OG Texas A&M

Texans trade 4th RD picks #109 and #131 to the Atlanta Falcons for their 3rd RD (95) pick: Points, Texans = 117; Atlanta =120

RD 3 (95) - D'onta Foreman, RB Texas

RD 5 (169) - Corn Elder, CB Miami

RD 6 (188) - Chad Kelly, QB Ole Miss - (Why? Because Texans are in QB Hell! Take a chance on the DNA and the best arm in this draft w/ a 6th RD pick, he spends a year on IR, maybe he can grow up, mature and get his temper and anger management under control, possible day 2 draft trade in 3 years if he's not the man.)

RD 7 (243) - Khalid Abdullah, RB James Madison (Lightning to Foreman's Thunder)

Texans begin 2018 without Osweiler, Miller and Allen.

REVISED: Already, based on reports on how well Peterman threw the ball and performed at the Combine he will likely be long gone by the end of the 3rd RD. Thinking back to what Belichick said about Garoppolo and QBs, you have to get those guys early. Foreman's foot stress fracture has dropped him to RD 3. Need more info from @CloakNNNdagger about Foreman's injury.
So the 2016 FUBAR has now been extended thru 2018.

Texian, I like this trade idea and will take a crack at creating a draft around this scenario:

RD2-02-034: RT Taylor Moton Western Michigan 6-5 @ 319 lbs.

RD2-25-057: OL Ethan Pocic LSU 6-6 @ 310 lbs. **My Swiss Army Knife OL**

RD3-02-066: RB Samaje Perine Oklahoma 5-11 @ 233 lbs.

RD4-02-109: FS John Johnson Boston College 6-0 @ 208 lbs.

RD4-23-130: SS Rayshawn Jenkins Miami 6-1 @ 214 lbs.

RD4-36-142: WR Mack Hollins North Carolina 6-4 @ 221 lbs.

RD5-25-169: DT Rashaad Coward Old Dominion 6-6 @ 322 lbs.

RD7-25-243: LB Garrett Sickels Penn State 6-3 @ 263 lbs.

Texian, I like this trade idea and will take a crack at creating a draft around this scenario:

You're happy with the QB's we have? Or do you want to sacrifice this year and "we'll get one NEXT YEAR" yet again?

And who's gonna play RT? Or is the plan to rely on Clark & Lamm again? Do we need another C/G more?

And who's gonna play RT? Or is the plan to rely on Clark & Lamm again? Do we need another C/G more?

I'm actually happy with the QB's on this roster...more so than any rookie QB who would be available beyond #57 or later. That possible QB is 2 seasons out from being a potential savior to the position. I'll go with players who bring playing time to the table in 2017.

As for Moton, Pocic and Perine...that's setting the foundation for 2017. Moton and Pocic give the team solid OL talent with a lot of versatility. Versatile players seem to be coveted by O"Brien. Between Su'a-Filo, Martin, Mancz, Moton and Pocic, the Texans would have 4 players who could man the C position at the NFL level, they would have 5 players who could handle playing OG and 2 or 3 who could compete at RT. I like all the options and depth this group would give the Texans.

Perine is a big physical runner who can handle the other chores of the position, like blocking and catching. He could be extremely complimentary to Miller and this offense. Blue is a bruiser who runs smack dab into the pile of humans in front of him on most crucial situations. Have the Texans ever been able to count on him inside the Red-Zone? Miller isn't a Red-Zone RB, he's built for the action between the 20's. Perine would bring some real cred to this backfield. If Perine is gone, I've got Brian Hill rated almost as high since he does everything Perine does but doesn't bring the same physicality.

Getting the OL and running game elevated is going to diversify the running game to include running to the right side with some new authority, this obviously helps Savage or Weeden and possibly opens up deeper downfield throws to keep defenses off balance.

This would have been my 2017 draft Live! as it happened, there was no looking back, it was as it happened.

Actually just hearing that John Lynch was trying to trade up in to the 20s for Rueben Foster. He was afraid Saints were trying to do the same. Payton confirmed Saints would've taken Foster if he was on the board. I would have traded back from #25 with Lynch and the 49ers.

Marathe asked: “What if Foster falls, free falls, and he's sitting there at 25?”

“To me, that's easy,” said Shanahan. “Get him.”

“He's not getting past Cincy [with the ninth pick in the first round], though,” Lynch said.

“I think he is getting past Cincy,” Shanahan said. “I don't think he's getting past [Ravens GM] Ozzie [Newsome at 16].”

Wow, that's amazing. Lynch, the GM, Shanahan, the HC, & Marathe, the strategist... that's almost like a boardroom making decisions kind of things.
