The Game Has Evolved

The game of football seems to have evolved passed Gary Kubiak and Wade Phillips. While other teams are having progressive thinking about the game of football, it feels the Texans are stuck in the early 1990′s way of football. Running the ball and playing strong defense to win games was a good recipe for success in that era of football. With the game centered around the quarterback to be successful, the Texans just don’t have that player to change the complexion with some big throws.
The Texans are in desperate need of getting new thoughts and ways to look at the game and bring out the best in their players. The road is coming to an end and Kubiak and Phillips will be on the hot seat. Both deserve full responsibility for what has happened this season, and not making the right calls to save the season makes their possible release justified.

Keenum still needs time to develop, but the reality is that he gets a “free pass” from onlookers because he is a University of Houston product. If he was from any other school in the United States, the call for him to be replaced would be loud and clear

The game is clearly evolving (as it always has), and the coaches who experience consistent success evolve with it.

And obviously it helps to have a QB who can consistently move the ball and do so when it really counts under pressure and at the end of games.

Right now, we have neither the head coach nor the QB that can exploit the modern NFL at a championship level. 12-4 is a nice record, but when the wins rarely come against quality and elite teams, it feels like a paper tiger.

The way the NFL game is incorporating the read zone, the wildcat and other methods of getting more production from the QB position why isn't Jordon Lynch getting more attention. The myth that you have to be 6'4 to succeed as an NFL QB seems to have been debunked recently.

The NFL is an ever changing and evolving league and the best teams evolve. Just look at the Patriots. They were a wide open spread offense, then a TE heavy offense, then a run heavy offense. They have gone from 3-4 to multiple on defense and run a myriad of looks against offenses. They are always evolving and finding the best way to utilize their talent.

Then you have Gary Kubiak and Wade Phillips, who have run the exact same systems for 10 years and haven't changed a damn thing.

I don't like to quote myself, but in this case I will given that I just posted this in the Keenum thread. Odd.

Except that all the adjectives that have described Kubiak as a "Quarterback Guru" and "Offensive Genius," are all based upon Gary's archaic, outmoded, backup quarterback mentality, so that honorifics of this sort no longer apply to him. At one time, yes! In 2013 the game has passed him by; consequently, Gary's myopia has extended to Case Keenum, TJ Yates, and yes, even to Matt Schaub, and it has shown in their gameplay and predictability, all predicated on Kubiak's "teaching."

I am sincerely convinced that the regression of TJ Yates and now Case Keenum, is not wholly, but in part attributed to young men buying into old concepts. The talent of the man throwing the football is of course a major factor, but we've all seen two guys come in and light it up like gangbusters, only to regress the more they are inoculated into the system.

There is also no doubt that opposing teams having game film on Keenum has contributed to Case's regression; still, game film primarily identifies tendencies that can be exploited. But every QB that has ever played has tendencies - and even the best QBs fall prey to their shortcomings, either by means of human error or an opposing team/coach/player being that good at exposing you. Some tendencies can be corrected. Some cannot. Whatever the case, it's a process...and anyone who's ever done any self-work on themselves knows it doesn't happen overnight.

The tendencies of the player, however, does not dictate constant 7-step drops, coupled with long developing routes, with a blitz in your grill nearly ever 3rd down. These errors in coaching create artificial tendencies - yet tendencies, nonetheless - that retard growth and lose games.

Bless his heart, but Gary Kubiak was the perfect self-scratching itch.

I thought I read Keenums #s were better with Kubiak on the sideline, go figure.

Kubiak being fired is Keenum's death knell as a starter. New coach will bring in new QB. I really would be surprised if Lovie/David Shah/Whisenhunt or whoever rolls with Keenum.

With Kubiak running a traditional outdated offense and Case coming from a modern spread offense, it's almost like the two were never meant for each other.

I hope they bring in an O.C. like Sumlin.

Are you talking to me? Because I have no idea what Keenum is going to do...and neither do you. I just like my football with Ws on the end. I don't care who takes us to the promised land, even if it's Moses under center.

Ehh, evolution denotes something changing & i don't necessarily know if that's true about the game as a whole. Yes, you've got a few new wrinkles being made in terms of success of certain offenses & how the qb position is viewed, but when it comes down to it in the playoffs, you've still got to play stout defense & be able to run the ball when you want to & have an elite triggerman under center...or at least a guy who has elite level talent back there....

The only thing that's really happening imo is there are many more roads being discovered showing these college coaches how to come into the NFL and from the college ranks and have immediate success... The spread offense & the short atypical sized qb's are helping to facilitate that.

I'm an A&M student and I'll tell you the spread offense ain't all that.

If it is, it will because Case didn't play well enough. All anyone, especially a UFA can ask, is the chance to show their stuff. Case is getting that. If the next coach feels like that gives him the best chance to win, I have no doubt they will play him.

Same thing with the defense. It needs health and a good draft or two much more than an overhaul of the system.

I was a Kubiak fan and excited when Phillips was hired. The fact is that both relied too much on their systems. Neither adjusted when needed. Many games were lost because the systems failed. The system couldn't put players in position to succeed.

Coaches that fail to keep evolving their systems will become extinct.

Teams figured out keys and hot routes on blitzes. Schaub knew his so he was intercepted repeatedly. Case didn't know them near as well so defenses couldn't use it to the same effect. Kubes never changed them..."that's on him."

Funny thing is Vinny that many of us including yourself saw the signs if this in season two of his tenure. It wasn't hard to notice when the guy would constantly run the ball with guys like Green, Brown, and Lundi. The constant draw plays on anything over 3rd and 7, the refusal to move on from certain players, and worst of all the refusal to hire new coaches when his buddies were some of the worst in the league. Can't believe it took 8 years to and another 2-14 type of season to finally figure this out from McNair.
