Would You Want to See AJ Get Traded?

man im starting to think about it. i wish we keep him, but i think he deserves a chance with a contender.
would like to see him with brady.

possibly frees up money, maybe gets us a 3rd rder and AJ gets to make a deep playoff run the next 2 years.

i know its not gunna happen, but id like to see it. guy is a hf that deserves better than this.

Tough one. I would like to see him contend too, but I'm sure he is really loyal to this city and has settled in for good. Doubt he would leave this franchise through the last years of his career. JMO

With Schaub gone next year, and probably Wade Smith too, and the Ninja either gone or taking a pay cut, we can get an upgrade on the D-line while still able to extend Watt's contract.

Draft a RT and a G; we can get AJ a ring.

When did the Texans become a charity? A 3rd rounder is absurd. I frankly don't care if AJ gets a SB ring unless it is with the Texans. And most importantly it would kill the Texans' cap with dead money.

Hey, if it's ok to start stupid threads now, can I start an Andrew Luck vs Case Keenum thread yet?

Statistically his first game makes it a viable argument & it's the question we'll be asking for years if Keenum is our future.

No.

I don't get the whole "I want him to win elsewhere."

It would suck if Andre were to win a championship somewhere else IMO because that would be the team he may think more fondly of. Suddenly that becomes the team he's remembered for playing on in everywhere but Houston.

So no.

whos our qb?

Keenum, obviously.

You get him on the cheap; use the savings to shore up other positions.

There are more exciting possibilities in the draft in 2015 and beyond.
The Freshman from Fla St. for example, Jameis Winston; he's the number one QB prospect in his class and he has done incredibly well.
Another possibility is in our own backyard, another QB from UH (hailed from Florida); he has the size that Keenum doesn't have.
Just to name a few.

The Ravens only got a 6th for Bouldin who's cap hit is close to what AJ's will be next year .... I think they are comparable players at this point in their careers.

A 6th .... seems absolutely nucking futs for him , I wouldn't expect much more (If at all) for AJ ....

The second point , yeah since they have redone his deal so damn many times , all that bonus $$$ would hit the cap immediately .... I don't know how much it is , but its likely a whole lot.

Trading AJ is pointless .... You'd get little return and have a sh!tload of dead money.

I like the idea of the salary cap .... I just don't like the execution of it by the NFL , its so prohibitive to player movement and doesn't allow teams the ability to maximize return on players via trade.
I much prefer the NBA version .... it allows for a whole lot more flexibility for players and teams in terms of player movement.

While I'd hate to see him go I understand your point of view and he does deserve to play for a contender and not go through a rebuilding process this late in his career. It all depends on what we'd get for him in trade.

Only if that's what HE wants.

Now from everything I've ever heard or read, that's not where his head is at. He wants one - naturally, everyone who plays does - but I think he wants to get it here.

Only if that's what HE wants.

Doesn't matter what he wants .... It makes no sense for the team to trade #80 , no return on the investment and a massive cap hit.

The idea of giving AJ an opportunity with a contender is nice and all .... Its just not realistic.

/lock thread.

No to the OP question.

I also think if Andre is traded tomorrow we absolutely get higher than a 6th for him.

I wouldn't trade AJ for the simple fact that I believe this team can still win a ring next year with a good off season this go round.

If Rick Smith could get anything more than a quart of outdated milk and a used condom for Kubiak he would deserve 3 executive of the year awards and a Nobel prize.

Dre deserves the chance to be on a legitimate contender, he has max 3 years left. I find the argument that he's been "paid accordingly" quite narrow and self serving. How many times has he restructured to give team flexibility? He's been patient, a great professional and if he even hinted at wanting out I would hope he wasn't held hostage.

I wouldn't initiate a deal because you wouldn't get as much as you would think, but if he wished to go then you grant him his release.

When has he restructed and got the short end of the deal? The restructures always benefited Dre

Fantasy football mentality.

Team. That's all there is in this sport.

If he's not on my team I'm not rooting for him.

No.

Thats right he was the one who asked the team to stretch out his payments. It's not Andres fault that the GM can't figure it out and has to routinely ask the veterans to take less money in order to meet his budget.

Should Dre just give money back? I don't get your argument.

Clearly you dont get how restructures work. Andre was better off after each restructure. I never made mention of asking him for money back but lets not act like Dre did what was is in the best interest of the team and nothing else. He benefited too

I understand that, but at the behest of whom? He also didn't have to restructure, only did it because it would help the team at the time of the request.

Only if whomever we trade him to (as long as it isn't Dallas) wins a Superbowl the following year. I'd like to see him leave with a Superbowl ring. He deserves it. But insofar as trading him, he's an asset to the team and a real leader. You don't trade guys like that. You let them retire in your jersey so there can be no doubt as to which team they'll be listed with when they enter the hall of fame.

It's actually a baseball mentality . If you stink and are out of the race , you have a liquadation sale to better your future .

In theory , if you think the Texans are a couple of pieces away , you keep him . If you think the ship has passed , you trade him . I have no idea where the Texans stand except I believe they way over valued themselves in certain areas and it's killed them .

The team asked and he benefited. Of course he didnt have to but since he was getting benefits from it why wouldnt he go along? Please do tell me what reason he would reject their request

Hey, I like your explanation better.

Eh, I guess maybe if we were the Jaguars with no freaking chance what so ever any time soon but this team still has quite a bit of talent. I just don't see us out of for the next couple of years at least if we can fix a couple of spots.

Case Keenum. He's gonna make the magic happen!

If Case proves to be the real deal , that's a huge boost for the Texans future . I do think Case knows how to use players strengths like a good ponit guard which would allow them to get a Sproles type guy . I think this may help cure the 3rd and 8 yds but throw 4 yds with no YACs . I think with Case , we may even bring back the fade .

The sense I'm getting is that Andre had some kind of selfish agenda to accept a longer term deal, and I won't cast that light on him. The team asked him to help them out, if it didn't benefit the team then why go through with it in the first place? Andre Johnson is a class act, and he will always do what's best for the team first. Did it benefit him? Sure it did. Did it benefit the team? Most certainly. Why would it behoove him not to take a bonus and alleviatec cap space? Good question, but it didn't only benefit Andre.

Maybe yourself, or someone with a firm understanding of cap management/finance could explain it to a blue collar guy like myself, what would be the benefit of dragging out the pay longer vs short term lump sum? Almost like the lottery? Do you get more up front in a cash payout vs interest over X amount of years?

If you need metal parts cut to a tolerance of .001 I'm your guy, finance not so much.

This has to be the most absurd thing I've ever seen on Texanstalk and I've even spent time in the no spin zone!

The Packers and Seahawks are the only contenders that have a lot of capspace and need a WR. I could see either of them making a play for AJ if he were available, but the 12 million or so in dead money makes it nearly impossible for the Texans to do. They would also need to move Antonio Smith and Wade Smith to get even close to staying under the cap. Although, I would love to see what AJ looks like with Aaron Rodgers throwing to him...

money in your hand now is better than a promise going forward for the player, accounting it for more years is better for the team

I want to see AJ retire a Texan, never tainted by another team's uniform.

And I get the feeling he feels the same way, judging by his words and, more importantly, his actions.

There are many HoF caliber players who never get a ring or even a chance to play the big game. It's a damn shame, but it's a team sport.

Teams can be built virtually overnight with the right coaching staff, especially one with solid talent in many areas like the Texans right now.

But AJ needs a great QB to take him to the promised land. Schaub is not it, so hopefully this team can figure it out before he wears out.

AJ will retire a Texan, get his number retired, and get his statue.

He unfortunately will never get a ring.

Not as a player, but I could see him being signed on as a WR coach in the future. He seems like the kind of guy who would continue to keep working in the NFL in the future, and I'm sure the Texans organization would love to have him in some capacity.

Wait, what!?!
Did you just say that Andre Johnson hasn't given this team any return on it's investment in him? That's kinda what "no" means in this context. None. Not any. Zero.
Is that your message??

I think he is saying you wouldnt get anything in trade now or what you got wouldnt be any better for the team than AJ is now so net zero

hmmm... okay there's some logic in that.

And for the record, I don't want to see A.J. in any other uni either. But if he asked Uncle Bob to leave - and he's the kind that would do it on the down low - Uncle Bob would task Rick Smith to make it happen.

No one would be very happy about it.
