How into draft R U?

Received a call from a buddy couple hours ago inviting me to replace his teammate in a boat race in Biloxi, Miss. Last minute cancelation that would allow me all expense paid trip leaving noon tomorrow returning Sunday. As many of you know I am a high performance boat nut losing my own BADBOY1 in Hurricane Ike. Art has never lost a race in his 31 foot American Offshore CAT; although I incorrectly reported last year he lost in Lake Havasau last year. Found out recently that although he blew engine at 125 mph, no competitor beat him.
Hesitantly, I agreed to stand in but just got call from Art that his teammates was on again. Whew.

What are you willing to give up? What are your preparations? I do not like visits or telephone calls. I have meals completed or ready to go with TV, radio and lap top going. I hate knocks on door (last April) & will not even get up this year.

BTW, Art just bought a 41 foot luxury CAT he will refurbish for resale at a great price for someone. If you know anyone with interest, let me know. It is a great looking boat.

I was a draft geek before it was popular to be one. I was a draftnik before the word was invented. The first draft I truly paid attention to was the one that brought us Mike Munchak. I believe it was 1982, and I was a big Oilers fan. I had just graduated HS, and was out of a job at the time. I had my portable radio and listened intently all day long for all the picks. This was in a time when it wasn't televised. My Dad was pissed that I wasn't out "pounding the pavement". I was more concerned about our 3rd rd pick.

The next year, 1983, was the time I bought my first "ourlads guide". I think by the following year, I was also subscribed to PFW, and some new guy by the name of Joel Buschbaum came out with an excellent draft guide and by then I was hooked. I was a fire breathing draftnik of the first order. If there was a Draftnik club at the time, I would have been the George Washington of my time.

The first time I watched on TV was 1987. That might have been the 2nd year it was televised. This is how geeky I was. My parents didn't have cable (yes I was still living at home..hold the comments!) so I drove over 100 miles to go to my Uncle's house in Madisonville because they had cable. I called in sick that day to work, and went to my Uncle's house and sat there alone most of the day with my handy dandy Joel Buschbaum draft guide at the ready and ESPN blaring with a young Mel Kiper leading the way. My parents thought I was crazy. I was. This was the day the Oilers drafted Alonzo Highsmith. Later that day my cousin got home from school. I guess she was a sophmore and she was livid because her favorite soap opera was on and I was an invader watching something extremely stupid and she missed her soap. Still remember that. We were close at that time, and I don't think she talked to me for months lol.

Age has softened me a bit. I'm still a big fan of the draft but it's not the end all be all event that it was for me back in the day. Nevertheless, my butt will be planted in my chair tomorrow and Friday night. I've already warned my girlfriend we aren't going out either night. It's the season within the off-season to me. This is where championships are built and there is just something about watching the process live as opposed to reading about it the next day. I learn so much more watching it all unfold and I like the chess match using the incoming talent and draft picks as the live pawns moving about.

I should add that in 1988 I moved out of the house for the first time and into an Apartment with cable. I've watched every single draft since without fail from the first pick to nearly the last since 1987. Even my wedding was planned to not miss it in 1990. I haven't missed a single first rd pick in that entire time. 25 years of drafts not missing a single high pick. There has to be an award for that doesn't there?

There is bound to be a 12 step program...:devilpig:

Good stuff Porky! This is another time I sympathise with those who have wife or girlfriend that expect attention during the draft. "But I already told mother we would be there for supper." WAHAHA

I'm pretty into it. I usually start watching the preview for it as soon as I can. The whole process is pretty damn cool, so I like to have the laptop out for rumors and trade details. I also like to know what people here on TexansTalk are saying.

there is always a thread for the draft that moves along very rapidly and hard for me to keep up and other threads + NFL/ESPN and radio. Hope they stick to not tipping the pick as comissioner agreed.

I don't like getting onto the internet until after the first round is over. I like getting the picks from the TV and don't like getting them super early from the web...I like to be surprised by trades and such...

After the first round, the net becomes essential because I'm not going to sit in front of my tv for all 7 rounds...

I normally don't make a big deal out of it. I don't know any of the college players, so I wouldn't know to be happy or not.

But I am interested. I'll watch. I'm most interested in the Texans' picks of course. But I'll also pay attention to our Division Rival's picks & who I perceive to be a rival next season..... New England & Baltimore.

I don't normally make it a point to be in front of the TV for the first pick, or even our first pick... other than 2006 that is. Lot of hype around that draft.

Also happens that I bought my season tickets in 2006, so I can bring my daughters to the game & share that experience with them. It's taken a while, but 2 of the three & my wife are "really" into the Texans now. They are more excited about this year's draft than I am & we're making preparations to be there for the first pick. We're a football loving family, usually get together on weekends to watch football during the season, Saturday (I just don't pay attention) & Sunday.

Tomorrow will be our first Draft Party.

My middle daughter wanted to go to Reliant.... but I said that's too much. 90 minute drive, then I have to work the next day.

I'm not that into it.

Request on organization. For general draft talk start one all-encompassing thread in here. That does not exclude a thread on "who is left for day 2 the Texans should target" type thread. Then as each Texans pick is made a thread for be created for them in the Texans Talk forum. I know that won't be fully followed but it sure would help out if y'all who I know will be watching closely helped reinforce it with others. Thanks.

I wasn't into the draft until the Texans. With the Oilers, I'd just pick up a magazine some time before training camp to see who we'd gotten and hope we got a good grade. The first few years with the Texans, I'd casually read up on it and try to get myself semi-informed and then I'd watch it on TV.

Then... I found Texans Talk (or the old HT.com forum that became TT) the year they drafted Mario. That was the first year I was really into it and I came on here to gauge people's reactions because I was kinda stoked.

Since then, I've been really into it. This year, my work load has been too much for me to follow the build-up as closely as I have the past few years.

I let my wife know that the draft days are off-limits. She almost tested me this year. Her boss was coming in town and we were going to have to go out for dinner with her on Day 2. :panic:

When I started freshman year at TAMU, I started watching college ball very closely. That's when I got into it. I'll be watching and have told the people I talk to most that I will essentially disappear from everywhere but TT for a while :D

I've never been into the draft to the point that I watch tons of film, do mock drafts, and make files on every player coming out. I do keep up with a few guys during the year that I know or suspect will come out for the draft, and then I go back and watch film on a handful of players that interest me after the season. So I probably cover 20 players pretty well.

This year, not so much. Not a great draft year and I've been busy. So I'm relying on y'all. :)

If any of my nephews or my niece make me a Grand Uncle ..... I might make the hospital.

Otherwise, it's draft.

For me, the NFL Draft is one of the best sports events of the year.

Sorry...over the years there have been too MANY guys who were undrafted who went on to make HUGE differences. E.g. Arian Foster & Priest Holmes

There've been TOO MANY guys who were drafted late who weren't expected to do much and did GREAT Ben Roethlisburger & Tom Brady come to mind.

And WAY TOO MANY guys drafted high who didn't do ISHT when they got to the NFL e.g. Red Grange, Doug Flutie, Reggie Bush, Ryan Leaf, Ricky Williams, Vince Young, Tim Tebow and FAR too many chumps to name for me to get excited about the draft. Sorry being good in college is no indicator how good you're going to be in the NFL. One man's opinion.

When it was an all day Saturday thing, I would always have some kind of meal waiting. Usually burgers or burritos. It's a little different now that it's so spread out. Maybe I should switch to a 3 day long feast. I definitely think the draft is like another Christmas for football junkies.

By the way, Ricky Williams rushed for 10,000 yards in his career. He doesn't belong on any bust list.

When this draft thing is over, I think we need to talk about the Elephant in the room.

Priest Holmes may have had a very nice & prolific career, but he didn't make a "huge" difference, from a big picture P.O.V. & right now, I question if Foster will reach Priest Holmes' status.

Decent overall numbers in 2012. A couple of good games. There were a lot of reasons for the way his season turned out... but in all honesty, I expected more from the man. I was disappointed with more of his carries than not.

I'm so excited for this draft. I have no idea why I am more excited than normal for this one, but I can't wait!
I'm excited but more in a calm way if that makes sense. This draft seems to be falling well for Texans both for a pick #27 or a having multi players there that could be targets for other teams to trade up with good offers. I am glad that
QBs and WRs are not going hot so far.

Priests numbers were MUCH better than Ricky Williams in the NFL and the man WAS the Chiefs running game. If you played the Chiefs and didn't prepare for Priest you paid a heavy price.

not really. there are a few guys every year that i know of, have seen enough of to feel confident about how they'll transition to the NFL. Then around this time of year i usually check out a few more. I don't do mock drafts b/c i feel they're just a waste of time considering you don't know how 32 teams have their boards set up and how they value what they already have...you may have an idea about 1 team but 32?

I like to do mock drafts like the Texan's Talk 7 rounder where different guys are picking different for different teams. It makes you learn more about who's out there and gives you a feel for where they'll to in the draft. It also gives you some appreciation for the excitement of having your eye on a guy, hoping that he'll fall to you, or when you've got a list of guys you want and you see them flying off the board.

Now... with that said... it usually doesn't bear a lot of resemblance to what actually happens. There are always surprises and weirdnesses during the draft. But that's part of what makes it so awesome.

Not that it affects your overriding point, but Rapistberger was selected 11th overall in the first round of the 2004 draft.

Well, it is over...anything you (not Texans) should have done differently? I am already reading up on the colleges.

I think I wasted my time by having the NFLN broadcast on.

Right at the end of the draft, I found out that the Texans has a radio broadcast going on the HT.com site. I should have just been on one of the Draft Trackers with Texans Talk and the Texans' broadcast on.
