*I'm trading a 5th and 3rd and whatever else it takes to get another second round pick.

1) Justin Hunter, WR 6'4" 200 lbs

A number 1 receiver in training. For right now, he can be a really good #2. Good hands, really good size, good speed. Can take the top off the defense and can catch shorter passes and get YAC.

2) Kawan Short, NT

Aggressive and good explosiveness from the NT position.

2) Tavon Austin, WR/RB/Returner

Is a better version of Keyshawn Martin. A much better version.

3) Brandon Jenkins, OLB

Explosive and aggressive off the edge. Coming off an injury so gettin him in the 3rd is a steal IMO.

4) D.J Swearinger, S

Good in coverage. Good tackler. Will instantly be the 3rd safety on this team.

5) Kenjon Barner, RB/Returner

Good change of pace guy and another guy that can return.

6) Quinn Sharp, P

Booming leg to compete with our punter. Will probably win the battle. Younger and has a huge leg.

7) John Major, ILB

I really like this guy. He is a football player and an underrated athlete IMO. Will instantly be a good special teams guy and I actually like him more than all of the higher rated ILB's I've seen. Dude is a baller.

7) Jack Doyle, TE

Good size, good hands, good athlete. What more do you want out of a 7th round TE?

You think Short falls that far ?! I think he could be off the board before the Texans first round pick.

I guess at this point no one really has a good handle on who goes where outside of the top prospects .... after the combine things will be clearer.

I will admit that I don't have a great handle on where guys will end up. I've checked sites and guys are all over the place.

One thing though, much like this is a good WR draft, this is also a good NT draft. If Short or Austin aren't there, I'd still take the same positions, but just look at different players....

While I agree that player rankings will change a lot between now and late April, barring injury or an arrest Short will go in the 1st round and it might take a little luck for us to get him at #27.
Are you giving up on Martin in the slot after only 1 season? I can see giving up on Jean since he's been here 2 seasons now and still sucks, but I think Martin has potential.

I agree with finding some way to get an early 2nd round pick while keeping our own. We need quality not quantity.

Yes I'm giving up on Martin as a key contributor. He should be a depth WR guy, not someone to be counted on as a regular contributor. His hands are shaky and he struggles to catch the ball in traffic. He's not a deep threat and while he is kind of quick with decent speed he's not all that shifty.

But he'd still see some snaps because this is less about Martin and more about Walter. Walter should be released or at the very least his snaps should be greatly reduced. He still has value as a veteran presence and hands guy, but the days of him being a number two and seeing a majority of the snaps should be over.

I dont think drafting a WR early says they are giving up on anyone in particular .... Hunter's an outside guy IMO and wouldnt be returning punts or kicks. Martin wouldstill have his place on the team .... the drafting of a WR early improves the position , pushes Walter down the depth chart and makes up for the loss of Posey. If he hadnt gotten injured , I dont think it's as big a need as it is now.

As it is , they really need a solid outside guy. If it was up to me , I'd take Rogers but Hunter's in the same mold.

My question wasn't referring to Hunter in the 1st, but to Tavon Austin in the 2nd. While I agree Walter needs to be replaced/upgraded, I think he's back next year because there's just no one currently on the roster to replace him. Hunter might be able to do so, but we'd have to wait til the end of TC to find out and then cut Walter after we know if Hunter is capable. I've got high hopes for Hunter, I think he might be a star in this league very soon.

I think part of Martin's allure was his return skills which seemed to not be as good as hope,IE Manning taking over. Martin sucked as WR ala Holliday so only thing on his side is where he was drafted and only one year on roster as you state. He better have a much improved 2013.

I like what I see in Martin in the slot. His production wasn't the best but he seems to have the basic skill set for the position. I think, like most rookies, the game was just to big for him last year and I think he improves alot next season. I wouldn't give up on him yet.

This. Martin has the tools. Most WRs improve a lot after there rookie year if they have talent. IMO he does and I bet he will. I'm more worried a out who is throwing him the ball.

I'm just not down with the Tennessee WR's as a group, very undistinguished careers given talent/expectations. They all seem fairly high risk to me. What is the knock on Lestar Jean, who has similar size? core strength.

2) Kawan Short, NT

Aggressive and good explosiveness from the NT position.

Your must explain why a consensus first round prospect drops to end of second. Is there an off the field issue, failed drug test, something coming out that I haven't heard of?
2) Tavon Austin, WR/RB/Returner

Is a better version of Keyshawn Martin. A much better version.
Another, on the bubble first round prospect. Man this would be quite the haul. Electric player with elite speed.
3) Brandon Jenkins, OLB

Explosive and aggressive off the edge. Coming off an injury so gettin him in the 3rd is a steal IMO.
Yeah, he could blow scouts away @ the combine if 100%. Will be one of the surprise pass rushing OLB's.
4) D.J Swearinger, S

Good in coverage. Good tackler. Will instantly be the 3rd safety on this team.
Classic in the box safety with some coverage skills. solid pick good value.
5) Kenjon Barner, RB/Returner

Good change of pace guy and another guy that can return.
Best suit is his catching ability, will pick through holes not a downhill fit. love the player in situation role, depth.

6) Quinn Sharp, P

Booming leg to compete with our punter. Will probably win the battle. Younger and has a huge leg.
Yes, the all important missing ingredient on special teams. can change field position & put the other teams offense in a hole for a change.
7) John Major, ILB

I really like this guy. He is a football player and an underrated athlete IMO. Will instantly be a good special teams guy and I actually like him more than all of the higher rated ILB's I've seen. Dude is a baller.
I like selecting ILB later, if you feel strongly guy is a baller who can cut the roster. Good value & address need.
7) Jack Doyle, TE

Good size, good hands, good athlete. What more do you want out of a 7th round TE?
Doyle is one of my favorite 2nd tier TE's. This is a super group for position & Texans must come away with one of them. Doyle is also a competent blocker, does have very good hands too a Joel Dreessen clone.

Other than the top where you have possibly three first round prospects your group is pretty solid :fingergun:

I'm so depressed about our QB situation that I don't care for us to draft a WR.

If we draft on offense, I want us to look at a SERIOUS candidate to compete for the starting QB job. But that is nevvvver going to happen here as long as Schaub is still around.

Therefore, might as well spend a pick on offense on either OL or TE. These two positions keep Matt from drowning out there. Better pass blocking makes Matt a better QB...or a better TE gives Matt something to use as a Plan B when his primary receiver(s) are taken out at the snap.

Either position, OL or TE, IMO, masks Schaub's deficiencies. Which frankly, I think we're all in agreement, is the only option to go with for the next two years until he's gone.

FYI, 610 just reported that Texans are considering taking a QB much earlier than expected.

They can get out of his deal after the coming season without too much cap damage.

No way is Kubiak giving up on Martin or Posey and probably not Jean. Still with fans screaming Super Bowl, do you hopethey improve or do you go get a better candidate, especially with our ability to use our 3rd & 5th in a trade up in some sort of combo? There are WR that might duplicate our three guys but there an elite few that should be better. That is what I want.

Schaub did not prove to me that he cannot do it. Most agree it was a mental thing and hopefully, he will return to first half of 2012 form. We basically have little choice. A trade up in first could get you a better WR or Oline player but not a better QB. This is not the year for that.

Can you mock out a first round real quick...Nothing too complicated...

There's going to be some guys that drop out of that first round well into the second round...

Everyone can't be a first round pick. I don't know about all the way to the end of the second round, but the top middle area is where I think there will be some good value. And I don't recall ever watching a draft and not seeing a "reach"...There will be some "reaches"...Which consequently means guys that people have rated higher will drop...

Like this board last year didn't think we'd be able to get Merciless...But other teams picked guys they liked more and he was on board at our pick.

If both my second round picks are first rounders I'm cool with that as I think both positions can be filled by similarly talented players in about the same range.

CBS draft prospects has 6 DT ahead of short. So just going by their list (I know others have him rated differently) in order for him to be a first rounder 7 DT's would have to be taken.

And with Tavon Austin I've seen him all over the place.

But I am aware that both could go much earlier than what I've mocked...BUT like I said. I'd still look at the same positions just different players.

Martin should make the team next season, Posey spend the season on IR, and Jean should start TC on the bubble. Jean should also be made very aware that his job is on the line here, hopefully that turns into motivations. I do not want a trade up in the 1st. There's very little talent in this draft that I would say is on an elite level, but alot of talent that is very good - good. A trade up in the 1st round is prohibitively expensive and the talent level just isn't there this year to justify such a trade. The value in this draft is in the 2nd round where trade ups are not near as expensive. I think we should keep our own 2nd round pick but also find a way to move up and get an early 2nd as well, something in the 33-39 range. Barring some unforeseen run on WR, I think there will be some very good WR talent available to us at our own 2nd round pick. I think guys like Aaron Dobson, Cobi Hamilton, DaRick Rogers, possibly Justin Hunter, and my personal favorite Quinton Patton could be available to us at #57. Obviously the Combine will change everyone's list and the players that are available, but 3 picks in the first 2 rounds would help alot, NT, WR, OT/OG.

I agree something got into Schaubs head after the ***** slap that we took from the Packers. I'd like to handcuff Schaub and JJ Watt together during the offseason so that Schaub is forced to spend hours in the gym and hopefully become more athletic in the process. Maybe some of JJ's awesomeness would rub off on Matt.

WR position is a wildcard end of first round, several in discussion including Austin & Hunter. Pretty positive Short improved his draft stock up from borderline to definite 1st rd. grade. Much better prospect than Poe last year who was a top 15 pick or earlier.

When I get some time will try to update 1st rd. Right after the Superbowl would be a good time.

Thanks BB!

Just to clarify, my mention of trade up was for second round not first as we did with 3& 5 for Pats #28 getting Harris. I think a trade out of first to top 8 or so gets you a need + another pick (3rd?).
