Eagles Release Jason Babin

Holy crap! From chump to champ and back to chump.

Eagles release Jason Babin. Will owe remaining balance of $5.6M salary, $1.64M, if he is not claimed on waivers.
We could actually fit him under the cap this year if we wanted to. How would he do as a 3-4 DE? Can he play anything other than a wide 9?

Too small. We'd want to make him an OLB.... a WOLB which he didn't do to well at for us before. With Wade though....

interesting why they let him go.

It's probably a financial decision. If he gets picked up, they save 1.64 million in capspace this year, which can be rolled over into 2013. The season is over for them, so might as well start looking ahead to next year.

It's also a sign of things to come for The Eagles.

That organization is getting blown up this off season.

Ah, Football!
I keyed on him several times last night. Boy, what a difference a season makes. He simply looked lost on the field, like he really didn't care to be out there. There'd be times he looked to have his man beat then make a strange move that would take him completely out of the play. It was weird, like a chicken with it's head cut off kinda weird.

A guy with 5.5 sacks, 18 sacks and 12.5 sacks the past three seasons. Hmm, I'm interested regardless. I could care less about his smaller size. Antonio Smith is doing little lately and if that worries you then let him play some snaps at OLB instead of RE.

I was reading Twitter and one guy who reports fantasy news and talks to NFL people said one personnel guy told him that most if his sacks last year were "cherry picked." I'm not sure how you can luckily cherry pick 18 sacks but that was the message.

From Eric Edholm @eric_edholm

I'll say this: One pro personnel guy bashed Jason Babin up and down to me ... last year. After 18 sacks. Called him a cherry picker. FWIW...

Well given that their defense has taken a nose dive since firing Juan Castillo, I would think the "chicken with its head cut off" is an apt description for the team. That was a really stupid move on Reid's part this year, even more so than hiring the O-line coach as DC in the first place. In any case, I would chalk up the poor play to poor coaching and the turmoil in the organization this year. I think he'll go elsewhere and be much more productive. Rumors are Tampa, Detroit and Cincy could be interested, which would put him as a 4-3 DE pass rusher. That would probably fit his play style more so than a 3-4 like the Texans.

Hervoyel

BUENO!
Absolutely. Babin I don't know about though. On one hand I thought the Texans parted with him just as he was starting to turn the corner. On the other he had all of his success when he went back to playing in a 4-3. On still another (three hands?) you got Wade Phillips and if you're good at something he'll put you in a position to do that so maybe he could make something happen here with Babin again.

If the Texans choose to go after him it's because they know what they want to do with him and I trust them. If they don't bother then I trust that decision too.

But DeMeco would come back here and make some noise.

If the Eagles let DeMeco go next we got to bring him back.
Right now, I would love to get him back, but the trade deadline has passed. I can't see him going unclaimed if he was released right now. His remaining salary would be around 1.05 million for the rest of the season and the future years of of his contract are not be guaranteed. So there's just about no risk for a team to pick him up and keep him this year. Too bad, he would be perfect to have on our team right now :(

Next offseason, I could see us trying to get him, but he's probably too expensive for us.

Hervoyel

BUENO!
Didn't the Kubiak regime trade him to Seattle?
Babin, correct. They traded him for a safety (Boulware) who didn't work out either (just looked, I was wrong. Seattle kept him until 2008). I think both teams cut their respective players before the season even ended.

Babin had come back into camp lean though and was actually having what I thought was his best camp ever.

Yeah, I thought it was a pretty stupid trade based on talent and potential, but it was hard to give much of a damn at the time. I think Kubiak just wanted him gone for other reasons and dealt him.

At the time I remember some kind of BS comment from either Rick or Gary about trying to get help where we were thin and having to give up something where we we had depth. I felt like we traded a better player than some we kept. It kind of led me to believe that there was a reason they decided he wasn't going to be a Texan any longer. At various points in time when he's been out there the Texans haven't really been interested so that kind of makes me think they just don't want the guy which is fine I guess. I'm reading a lot into it but that's my impression.

If memory serves me he said something along the lines of "You have to give up something to get something in this league and we decided with the depth at DE that Jason was the talent we had to give up in order to fill a need at Safety."

not verbatim but I remember the interview...

I just hope no AFC playoff bound team picks him up. I can see it now AFC Championship game Babin 3 sacks for NE. NE wins! Ouch nightmare.

Hervoyel

BUENO!
I just hope we don't have to play against him this weekend ?
We will. The Titans are needy enough and bad enough to claim him and get him. No worries though. I imagine after this season in Philadelphia he's ready to shut it down and go to the house until training camp (wherever that may be). Unless he's picked up by a team that's rolling and headed to the playoffs I bet he goes full turtle for the rest of the year.

I'd pick him up.

I think we'd have a good shot to do so since there probably aren't many teams ahead of us on the wire that need him and still have play-off hopes.

Didn't he bad-mouth the Texans after he was traded? I know he was a punk when he was with the Tacks when they beat us, didn't he take the game-winning kneel-down or am I mis-remembering? I just remember him really getting fired up to play us, but that could've been the steroids he was on at the time, allegedly.

I spent about four hours with him one time. He was an ahole. I would not be surprised at all if Kubiak just wanted him gone.

Avert your eyes.

/Babin tweeted this picture to show ESPN he should be in the "Body Issue." If there were the d-bag issue, he'd be a shoe in. Yuck.

I don't know. Babin complained about playing in the 3-4 under Capers. And there was some bad blood between him and the Texans (especially their medical staff). Not sure if there is interest from either party.

I never met Babin, but I used to tailgate next to his family. Nice and fun loving bunch, especially his mom. Probably skips a generation.
If he's an ahole, why would you remain in his company for 4 hours ?
I think it was in a professional capacity.

I don't doubt it. I met one of his best friends as well and he seemed distinctly uncomfortable with Babin's behavior.

Now mind you our meeting came in the context of my making Babin's wallet lighter on behalf of a contractor he stiffed at his ranch. But in the context of 20 years of such dealings he stood out as an ahole and a liar.

I doubt Babin would ever return to Houston to be on its roster, my recollection is that he's a prideful man and now a wealthy man who is bitter about missed opportunities and wasted years here.
But I remember reading many positive things about Babin and his family, and
Babin is very much about family. And I remember the stories of Babin eating the chiken bones before he played a game in HS ? At one time Babin was greatly admired by Houston fans as a high-motor guy who didn't take plays off.
"Professional capacity." ? What capacity ? Hooker and john ? Don't know ?

The story is now that they released him because he quit on the team.

No link, just heard it on the radio (97.5) all morning.

Kubiak wants no part of this guy. One of the biggest reaches in Texans draft history. We traded UP to get him, and our trading partner was Bud Adams' team.

Babin is a documented ass hat, too.

He wouldn't help us. He'd cost the team money, around $1.something million dollars for his remaining salary he's due, he's a jerk, and he's no better than Barwin in terms of flashing potential and then going dark the rest of the time.

If he clears waivers, we can get him for the vet minimum.

We've given plenty other players the benefit of the doubt & blamed coaching for our previous issues. Babin has managed to stay in the league a "long" time & has had some success.

With our current coaching staff, who knows?

But wasn't Kollar the DL coach when we released Babin? As an OLB he'd probably spend more time with Herring... so I don't know.

I & the staff probably have high expectations of Mercilus, so we'll probably wait it out for that reason alone.

Babin was traded prior to the 2007 season. Kollar's first season with the Texans was 2009.

Something tells me that if he's going to get the vet minimum (and my guess is someone claims him off of waivers), there's lots of teams Babin would play for before he'd sign with the Kubiak/Smith tandem that's running the Texans.

Andrew Brandt says whatever team picks him up this year will take a $1.64 million CAP hit. Pretty sure that it means the new team gets a cap hit, I can't see why the league would hit the Eagles for $1.64 million if he's not on their roster anymore.

I don't see the Texans using that amount of cap space for him.

adbrandt Andrew Brandt
$1.64M. RT @Wade_Harrison If claimed, what's the new team cap hit for Babin? Original 5.5 or 1.6 balance?

If claimed off waivers. I wouldn't doubt that some team will pick him up off waivers but now that the word is out that he quit on his team, they'd have to be pretty desperate. Maybe Buffalo. Maybe Tennessee. But they're done. Why would they spend anything on a player to help them finish with a losing record.

If he clears waivers, he'll get vet minimum.

I heard earlier today that Babin said he wasn't going to play LB anymore and if he wasn't played as a DE he wasn't going to play in games....

If that is true, that's why they traded him....

And no way he's coming back.

And I'm also hearing that Philly didn't want him playing the wide 9 anymore so they could play the run better...He refused...

Wth kind of $^i# is that?

A one trick pony who just got dumped by said pony. No thanks.
Hugh Douglas, ESPN analyst/former Eagles DE on Jason Babin:

"He quit. He quit on this Eagles team. If he gets another job, I mean, congratulations to him. ... I would be surprised when other teams put that tape on, I would be surprised if he got another job. That's real talk from a guy that has played the position."

Brian Dawkins: These last time the Eagles let a guy go when they needed everybody on deck, all the help they could, get was T.O. (Terrell Owens).
