Peyton versus Wade

Today's piece of Colts' history is brought to you by Blue Blood: Tales of Glory of the Indianapolis Colts The question was raised on Twitter yesterday about Peyton Manning's performance verses Wade Phillips' defenses. Manning hasn't faced a team coached or coordinated by Phillips since 2005. The Colts are 5-4 with Manning at the helm against a Phillips defense. They played six times from 1998-2000 (splitting the games 3-3). The Colts stomped the Falcons (Manning threw 5 touchdowns) and then beat the Chargers in 2004 before losing in 2005. Overall, Manning has as passer rating of 84.5 against Phillips defense with 15 TD and 10 picks, but two of those games were in his rookie year. Since then, he's posted a rating 92.9 with 12 TD and 6 picks, with 5 wins in 7 games. But again, none of the games were recent. The strangest result was a 44-20 Indianapolis win in 2000. The Colts led 9-6 at the half, but ran off 35 second half points. The odd part was Peyton'...

I am not sure how accurate this website is or the author, but I am curious on how well Wade's defense was against manning over the years ,ESP being Manning likes to get the ball out quickly. Wade's defense likes to come in a hurry

Our 4-3 has disrupted Manning's rythm before & I look forward to see what a blitzing D will do. He will still get ball off but hopefully our DBs will do their part.

This defense has a lot of question marks, but it also has a lot of talent.

Going to be a fun, fun game to watch.

If Kubiak gives me the ball, I will keep Manning's offense off the field and that's all the D you need.

Signed,

Arian Foster

Bump from last year being Peyton didn't play

Also realize this is apples to oranges being everything has changed but still interested on how wade defenses Manning

Payton watched the new Texans defense last year up in Indy from the sideline. I know this.....he has not faced this new 4-3 defense yet. I think he is going to have some problems....especially since the blitz could come from anywhere.
Someone is going to be free......I am looking forward to seeing this chessmatch take place.........

Psst, it is not a 4-3 defense.

I only went back to 02 (is anything before that relevant? Prob not)

Atl
2003 25/30 290yds 5 TD 0 Int
SD
2004 27/44 383yds 2 TD 1 Int
2005 26/45 336yds 1 TD 2 Int
DAL
2010 36/48 365yds 2 TD 4 Int

The one vs Atl was a real bad team. Wade took over as HC I believe. They were just terrible. Manning, for the most part, has put up a lot of yards but inefficient as hell.

Mike

From another thread. Give me a bit.. and I will calculate passer rating and efficiency.

I sure hope Wade recorded the Monday Night game ATL vs. DEN and takes note of how ATL disguised their blitz packages and threw everything at Manning. It was an impressive performance by the ATL defense and Wade needs to follow that example. Honestly I don't think Manning has ever seen a pass rush like we're about to throw at him. I'd like to see Mercilus playing the other ILB spot opposite Cushing so that he can blitz Manning in the gaps

What, you're worried that maybe he forgot to set his VCR?

I thought I'd add the last part for clarity in case somebody misses it.

13/24, 132 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT

Peyton played the whole game, completed just 13 passes and the Colts scored 45 points.

I know it's not technically a Wade Phillips defense, but when Wade left the Chargers to take the Cowboys HC position, they replaced him with Ted Cottrell in order to maintain as much continuity as possible (Cottrell was Wade's DC when he was in Buffalo).

Cottrell lasted two years in SD, during which time they played the Colts 4 times. The Chargers won 3 of 4 - including eliminating the Colts from the playoffs in both seasons. While Peyton had 3 games where he passed for over 300 yards (one which he surpassed 400), and three games in which his passer rating was in the 90's, he also had one game in which he threw 6 interceptions (no, that's not a typo), and had a passer rating below 50.

Again, obviously Wade was gone, but I think the Charger defense those two years still had his fingerprints all over it.

I don't think that the Broncos are running the same offense as the Colts, so any comparisons might not hold water.

If you get rid of the Atlanta game (again, that team was terrible and not a good comparison) then you are looking at 89/137 1084 yards 5 TD 7 INT. 64% completion ratio (which is rather pedestrian for Manning). The passer rating is 80.0.

Manning has thrown for a ton of yards but not done much damage when it comes to points. When wade has had talent on defense he has harassed Manning and made him work for everything.

That makes sense...... I remember Wade's San Diego days against Peyton Manning and that defense had a bend but don't break mentality. That was with a less talented secondary than what we have and a lot less talented D-Line. Linebackers were probably about even.
