Post Jacoby Jones WR Depth Chart

pec0sb0b

on the lam
Guess we have a new opening in our depth chart at wide receiver.:hurrah:
images

What are we left with?

#1 - Andre Johnson, Lestar Jean
#2 - Kevin Walter, DeVier Posey
#3 - Jeff Maehl, Keshawn Martin

I think Jean is ready to step into the role of backup for AJ given what we watched in the preseason last year. Having seen so little of Posey as a senior I have no idea if he's ready to play. We don't have a veteran for the slot...will Martin be ready to play or is Maehl the logical choice? Could Posey take the spot as backup to AJ? Could one or more of the UDFAs (Jerrell Jackson, Dwight Jones, Mario Louis) muscle their way up the depth chart?

Many of the mock analysts (irony intended) were critical of the Texans' choice of receivers...will they be proven wrong and by whom?

I think most people had already moved jacoby down to 4 or 5 and some had just assumed he wouldn't be here regardless....like me.

Wouldn't sleep on Lestar Jean for #Texans No. 3 WR job. 6'3/215, long arms. Better athlete than 40 time suggests. Flashed in '11 preseason.

Dominated in practice when I was at camp. MT @evansilva: Wouldn't sleep on Lestar Jean for #Texans No. 3 WR job. 6'3/215, long arms.

LWR 80 JOHNSON, ANDRE - 18 Jean, Lestar - 19 Iglesias, Juaquin

RWR 83 WALTER, KEVIN - 00 Posey, DeVier - 00 Martin, Keshawn - 15 Maehl, Jeff - 16 Holliday, Trindon

UDFA: Mario Louis, Dwight Jones

LeStar is the guy to watch. He was impressive before the injury.

I think Lester will eventually become a Pro Bowl WR. He has the size and the speed, i would love to see him and AJ on the field next season.

Holliday and Iglesias are probably the odd men out. Maehl always seems on the cusp of coming in and fighting for a spot, but I think we continues to be the odd man out.

We stash at least one of our UDFA WRs on the PS and I'd give Jones (Dwight) a chance at making the team if he can put it together.

With Jacoby leaving, Walter becomes all the more important, if only for veteran leadership. Otherwise it'd be Andre and a bunch of first or second year players.

Maehl was on the PS most of last year. He didn't look nearly as good in pre-season as Jean did. But when we dropped Mason, we promoted Maehl to the 53 man roster. I think he played some ST and maybe got on the field a couple of times. I don't recall him catching anything.

I expect him to make the squad.

Andre
Kevin
DeVier
Keshawn

Those are my first four. Not sure if we're carrying 5 or 6 WRs, most likely five unless proven otherwise. If 5, I think Dwight will make it. If 6, I think Lestar will make the 6th spot.

a lot of this will be based on production in pre season. We all saw what Lestar did last pre season. Based on that and his size i feel he will be our #2 next season !

Mmmm, don't know about having rooks as the 3 and 4 options unless they dominate TC. I believe Jean has the inside track which is kind of unsettling.

The fans have what they wanted Jacoby out of town. Now, there are 5 dudes battling for 3 rosters who have never caught a ball in a real NFL game. Might work out, but "hope is not a plan."

I'll be honest, I don't see anyone passing up Kevin Walter for the #2 spot, and if anyone does, I'd put my money on DeVier Posey.

Now, about Lestar Jean, I really don't remember much of last preseason except Bryan Braman getting 4 sacks on the NY Jets and us beating the NO Saints. That's it. Whatever he did in preseason, was against rookies and crappy players playing for the last spots, because he didn't start over Dre, Kevin, or Jacoby in preseason, I know that much.

I'm not saying he doesn't have any talents, or he can't be the #2 WR, which is highly unlikely, I'm saying that he has to prove that he can do it against real players and he has to do it again. His competition just got much better this offseason, so there's no guarantee. Especially since he's coming off an season-ending shoulder injury. I just think Dwight has more talents than Jean, and DeVier is most likely making the team since he was a 2nd pick, and Keshawn Martin was picked in the 4th round.

ok so why would u put the rookies ahead of him, atleast he did do it in the NFL even though it was pre season, the rookies havent dont it yet so, that argument in bold isnt a very good one.

I've watched alot of Lestars college plays and he has some really good hands, and can run through people. Watch and you will see a lot of the same qualitys that another WR on the team has.

I'm not saying the other guys dont have a shot and he is automatic, but i think he has just as good of a chance as any of the other guys !

Has Jean become the newest Tony Hollings? Flashed in preseason, got everyone's expeditions up, and...that's it.

At least update him to Chris Taylor.

Our WR corps has a lot of questions and issues. It's kinda scary. It could be great and it could be HORRIBLE.

Andre: One of the greats but he's had problems staying on the field the past couple of years. That worries me.

KW: A hard-working, lunch pail kind of guy. But after a great and unexpected 2 year run here, he declined in 2009 and 2010 and then declined more in 2011. I don't think the guy has it anymore.

Trindon Holliday: I thought he got cut after his one game last year. I don't know if he played any wideout in that game but he's got 0 catches for 0 yards.

Juaquin Iglesias: I remember having high hopes for this guy coming out of college. Drafted in the 3rd by the Bears in 2009. He's bounced around the league. He's played in 1 game. For his career, he's got 0 catches and 0 yards.

Jeff Maehl: The only other guy on our squad with any regular season experience as a WR. He was active for 3 games and I think he only saw the field in 1. He's got 0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs. In preseason last year, he had 5 catches for 30 yards.

LeStar Jean: He flashed in training camp last year. In the preseason, he had 2 catches for 53 yards before getting injured.

Posey: A rookie. Could be great but he's still a rook. And it's supposed to take rooks time to learn this offense.

Keshon Martin: See above.

Dwight Jones: See above. PLUS headcase. BUT he's a physical freak.

Even though I'm glad Jacoby is gone, having this little experience on the field worries me. Even before Jacoby was officially released, I had our WR corps for the 1st game as:

Andre, Posey, Martin, KW, Jean, and DJones. With Maehl having an outside shot.

Only 2 experienced guys.

Because DeVier Posey and Keshawn Martin were drafted, and Lestar wasn't. Kubiak has always been known to stick with his players that he drafted, even when they play bad or mediocre. Lestar was also injured, and it was a season-ending at that, so who knows how well he will perform again. I just think they will outperform Lestar, at least Posey and Dwight Jones. Martin might take a year or two to contribute all that much at WR. And Dwight Jones was at once, a 2nd round prospect, if it wasn't for his stupid party he had, he probably wouldn't have gone undrafted.

No.. and why did he remind you of Hollings. (I ask, because thats a odd comparison).

Tony Hollings was a rb for just 4 games in college and the Texans spent a second round pick on him. There is no comparison there. I would've went with Jacoby Jones over him and when he flashed, it was only on special teams

Rod Smith, Arian Foster, Chris Myers, Kevin Walter, Joel Dreessen, and Mike Briesel all say high... all players that Kubiak rolled with over players that were drafted and drafted much higher. I'm sure if you could go through every player that came in the league under Kubiak, you'd find even more examples.. Pretty sure TD would fit somewhere in there as well

If LeStar can play HE WILL PLAY, draft status doesnt have anything to do with it. Outside of Andre, the entire WR depth chart is up for grabs...

Thanks Frog.

Is it warming up in Chi-town yet? :)

Hey drs,

It was actually a pretty mild winter but has stayed cool...30s to 50s. Today we hit 80s for 2 days and then back to 60s for weekend. We are enjoying it so far. New addition to family 2 weeks back so it has been a crazy year :). Hope all is good with you

Outside of AJ and KW this WR corp is so young, they probably still have diaper rash.

I see a lot of talent and a lot of potential upside but potential doesn't mean diddly squat in a game. You have to prove you can do it.

I think you have to keep KW this year even though on a strickly talent basis he is falling off and being surpassed by others. But he is still valuable in the run game, runs precise routes and he'll be where he is supposed to be when the QB gets in trouble. He's like the girlfriend that isn't quite so attractive anymore but you know her so well you don't want to dump her until you know that comely blond accepts your date invitation.

My guess is this is KW's last year as a Texan. We groom some of these youngsters this year and see who steps up and can take that #2 role. We need his money to help resign our FA's next yr.

That #2 role in 2013 probably goes to the better of Jean or Posey. Don't rule out Dwight Jones as a dark horse either IF his head is screwed on straight.

Martin's future is as JJ was imo - PR and slot guy/#3 or #4 WR.

I could be wrong, but I don't see our future AJ replacement on the roster. I see a bunch of #2's and #3's and #4's. That's still something we need to address at a later date.

I'll take a stab at the final roster. I say 6 make it. In no particular order - AJ, KW, Jean, Posey, Martin, and D. Jones.

I'm not worried about Rooks being the 3,4,5,6 whatever option. Our most common offensive packages are 2 TE sets regardless. As long as the rookies come in and block for Foster/Tate I'm good with them.

AJ
KW
Posey/D. Jones
Bryant Johnson/Posey
Ke. Martin
D. Jones/Bryant Johnson

I think we take 6 this season, with the 6th slot being inactive gameday. Is B. Johnson still on the team?

If enough of these WR's step up during pre-season I wouldn't be surprised to see KW reduced to a role where he barely gets on the field. KW is a good run blocker for the position, but his run blocking isn't going to keep him on the field. He is a WR so he primarily needs to be a good receiver.

I actually like KW as a situational WR/player though. Short yardage slot guy. Back up type guy...Hands team...

Honestly, I don't ever feel like he should have been the #2. I think he was built for the role that I described above.

I really hope we don't look back at this in a couple of years as us ogling over a scrap heap consisting of nothing but junk.

Only because it didn't make sense that he wasn't a cap causalty. Surely they had plans for him if they didn't out right cut him instead of Winston who will be starting for KC, or not signing Brisiel who most likely will be starting for Oakland, or Dressen who'll get plenty of playing time with Denver, or Jason Allen who will see plenty of snaps in Cincinnati.

Some things just don't make sense. Jacoby outlasting those guys surely meant he'll at least take week 1 snaps....... surely. Unless we've got a GM without a clue, but we know that's not the case.

Well congratulations!

As much as I love me some KW, I really hope someone can do what JJ never could. Step up! I think that is what Kubiak really wanted Jacoby to do, but never could take it to that next level. Especially when AJ went down.

I don't care who it is, drafted or not, just step up and steal the spot.

Honestly I don't think Kubiak wanted to cut Jacoby. I heard on the Radio that Kubiak considered him like a son. Jacoby spent a lot of time in his office early in his career and outside of having some growing up to do early on, he did everything Kubes asked of him. He became a hard worker at his craft, stopped the off field behavior issues, got into his playbook...

We use the name Smithiak, but really they're two separate people. Then you throw McNair into the mix and that is another opinion that needs to be honored. I don't think they had decided they were going to cut Jacoby.

I heard a report that they tried to trade him for Colt McCoy. Well, they didn't know that Colt McCoy might be available until after they drafted Weeden.

Maybe they knew he wouldn't be here next year a lot earlier, but I think they just addressed it at the time they saw fit.

I don't know why everyone is putting their eggs in the LeStar Jean basket. I think if they really trusted him they wouldn't have brought in 4 or so other guys but that's just what I think. The last time we relied on a 2nd year undrafted player turned out well, though.

I think Bryant Johnson is a UFA. I haven't heard anything about him coming back and didn't include him in my lists.

I have a hard time believing that Gary will roll out day one with Tis kind of unproven youth at WR considering they are favored to win the division and want to make it to the afc championship game aft being so close last year.

I'd consider when it came down to it last season, they opted to try out Mason and Johnson late in the season as opposed to trying to promote the younger guys.

It wouldn't surprise me to see a guy like Johnson resigned while the others fight it out for the remaining spot(s). I just think Posey being drafted high gives him the inside track to stick. I didn't get to see any preseason action last yea, so I have no clue on the LeStar hype.

They brought in other players for depth and competition IMO. I believe that behind AJ it's open season on WR spots. Things will shake out in camp and pre-season. Hell we spent a 2nd round pick on Harris and he barely played last year. We spent a third on Jacoby and he never got past #3 receiver.

I don't think that bringin in WR's means as much to Lestar Jean as it did to Jacoby and KW...

LeStar is just another young guy with an opprotunity to get playing time and a roster spot.

I think there is a good chance no one will be signed until/if these guys prove they aren't ready.

I would think they'd want to give these young guys every shot they can before going after a vet...

You're not the only one hoping that.

And as for LeStar Jean and his supposed "shoulder injury", did anyone happen to see the play in which he was "supposedly" injured?

I'm just wondering if Kubes "stashed" him on IR to keep him from being picked up on waivers, but I have nothing to base that on.

Yes you do.

Kubiak has been doing that since he's gotten here.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Bryant Johnson re-signed. I wouldn't be surprised for Kubiak to try to grab some other vet WR.

BUT...

Last year, he cut Mason with a few games left in the season and he brought up Maehl from the practice squad to take his place. So he did promote one of the younger guys last year at the expense of the younger guys. He couldn't promote Jean because Jean was lost to IR.

what did we see from lestar though? one catch off a db who hasnt played in the reg season yet. i think we need to tone it down a bit.. a pro bowl WR??? calm down..

Good point, but I don't see it being his first call. I do think however, based off those two late season moves that they aren't likely going to sign someone who is going to push up the depth charts just like Mason or Johnson.

I just hope thismdoesn't end up like the disaster at cb that happpened when they let dunta walk and decided to go VERY young as well. Walter is going to be steady, but his drop off in production is going to push him to being a slot guy. He's physically much better suits for the spot anyway.

I really hope that either Posey or LeStar are ready to step in and produce in at least the #3 capacity. My other question is if Garrett Graham will be ready to step in where Dressen left off or do you think we look at adding another vet TE in the offseason? If Clark is healthy would you be opposed to bringing him in?

The thing that scares me about this is how reminiscent it is of the Kiddie Corners fiasco. There's just not a lot out there in FA. Braylon Edwards? Jabar Gaffney?

We've got to rely on at least 2 of these guys to step up. Or KW to rediscover his production from 4 years ago. That worries me. Especially if TJ is getting the playing time.

I don't know that GG is ready to step up. I expected something from him last year and, iirc, he had 1 catch all season. I think they've got to bring some FA TE in: Clark (if he's healthy), Shiancoe... (shudder) Shockey? This is why I expected us to pick up a TE in the draft: Fleener, Lardarius, or Hanna. Maybe one of the UDFAs can step up. Hell, maybe we can bring Dorin Dickerson back and play him at TE.

It just seems like we're expecting a lot from rooks and except for that Kiddie Corner thing, that's not Kubiak's normal MO.

Has anyone seen Lestar "Big Play" Jean's website? http://www.bigplayjean.com/

Big Play has a whole 2 more catches than BasketCase Jones hahaha.

As for why the Tony Hollings comparison...he was the hope. This diamond in the rough, we outsmarted everyone and it's going to pay off. Big Play made 2 plays in the preseason. Hollings did the same thing. I learned the first time around. Prove it on the field then I'll believe. Lots of preseason wonders that never do anything; see Tony Hollings.

1. AJ: It goes without saying.
2. KW: He's a starter and knows the system backwards and forwards

At this point, I think the rest of the spots are up for grabs. However, here is how I would do it.

3. Lestar Jean: Showed something in preseason. Had he been healthy he would have made the squad coming out of camp.

4. DeVier Posey. He was drafted in the third and was talked about highly, so he will get an opportunity to play.

5. Jeff Maehl: He actually got onto the squad in the later part of the season.

6. Keshawn Martin. He was drafted in the fourth and can be the kickoff/punt returner as well as play as a 6th WR. He is a bigger version of Trindon Holida

PS: Dwight Jones: He won't really get a chance since Jean, Posey, Maehl, and Martin will get the majority of reps in practice, camp, and preseason.

I need more data. So I will at least wait until OTAs and see who distinguishes himself.

Who knows, maybe one of the younguns will bump Walter down the depth chart....
