OMG. He's not 3rd string anymore.

TJ YATES-

STARTING QUARTERBACK FOR YOUR HOUSTON TEXANS.

74 year old Jeff Garcia is the 3rd string quarterback here. Get with the times. I swear if I hear anyone else on the radio call him the 3rd string guy I'm gonna fly through the telephone connections and punch them right in the ear.

File this next to "battle tested playoff team". Yeah... the Ravens were tested....and they lost. So how does that help them?

I am ok with him being called 3rd string QB that is starting. Gives him more pizzass. I don't care what they call him as long as he is called winner.

Thank you.

He'll NEVER be 3rd string again. He's the backup after this playoff run...or the starter, if you are following me...

I am moppin' up what you are spillin'. Well, the back up part anyway, now way he beats out Schauby.

Hot Tub may be in serious trouble next year. I can actually see Kubiak letting Hot Tub go (or trading him for some low round pick) and keeping Delhomme as our 3rd stringer.

Me too. I don't see how Leinart comes back as the 2nd string QB unless we trade Yates in the offseason. Yates has proven himself at least good enough to be the 2nd string guy for us. And considering Schaub will be 31 at the start of next season, the Texans may consider Yates their QB of the future and let him take over the starting gig in 2 or 3 years.

EDIT: Speaking of Leinart, has anyone else noticed his lack of contribution in helping Yates since he got hurt? On the sidelines it seems that Schaub, Delhomme, and Garcia are all actively involved discussing what's going on in between offensive series, but Leinart seems to stand away from them. Noticed it often enough at the Bengals game to make me wonder about it.

Way too sick of hearing "third string". He hasn't been third string in weeks.

IMO if he had been promoted based on play, he would not be considered "3rd string"

But he was promoted solely based on injuries, and because of that, the IR'd players before him are technically still ahead of him on the depth chart but unable to play.

Therefore he's 3rd string until they come off IR and he proves he can beat them when both are healthy.

I think eh'll be 2nd stringer next year

Definitely. Delhomme is obviously capable as a 3rd stringer and will be cheap to sign.

I see absolutely no reason to keep Leinart next season. He's a lefty, yet Schaub and Yates are right handed, he's owed 3 million (made 2.5 this year), and Seattle was interested in him last year. Seattle is the team that traded a 3rd round pick and swapped 2nds with the Chargers for Charlie Whitehurst. Then they signed him to a 2 year 8 million dollar deal! I think we could easily get a 6th or 7th out of them for Lienart. If not, cut him and spend the money on someone worthwhile like Myers, Foster or Marques Colston.

Wasnt Lienart on a 1 year contract?

Leinart signed a two year, $5.5 million contract on 7/9/2011.

If the Texans choose to keep him, he's locked up until 2013.

$3.75 of the contract was guaranteed. If Leinart's no longer the backup, the Texans probably wouldn't want a third stringer making $1.75 million.

Leinart is gone after this season. TJ showed himself to be a Much more capable backup to Schaub. I also don't mind the media calling him third string, will make it that much sweeter when we win :)

I would not want things any other way because all three of them have had much better NFL careers then Matt Leinart and two of them have been wnners in the playoffs.

This.

Plus it's great for smack talk - "You just got burned by a third stringer!"

I heard Matt Turk and Garcia hang out at practice, and every sentence out of thier mouth starts with "Back in my day we......", and that all the younger players are tired of hearing how good they have it now, and that they don't believe that Turk and Garcia had to "walk to practice up hill both ways in 3 feet of snow".

Not sure he is the guy you want giving advice to Yates anyway as Gary said in his post, Leinart is the one with least experience and worst career, so yeah go over there and eat some sun flower seeds please.

Sure, he's the starter now, but i get while people still throw out the "third string" label, and it does not bother me...

Had Matt Schaub never been injured, TJ Yates wouldn't have seen a game day jersey this year, just practice ones... Let's not act as if Yates came into camp as a third string QB and battlefought his way up to first... The QBs just couldn't get out of Florida healthy, except for one: the third stringer!

(just came to mind: we played in Florida three times this year..shocked we're not already on Delhomme, and that Schaub wasn't hurt in Miami, MattyL in Tampa and Yates in Jax...)

Thank you.

Agree. He got a battlefield promotion to 2nd string, behind Schaub with the way he has handled the end of the regular season and the Bengals playoff game. He is getting a little better with each start.

He's going to be labeled that until the season is over. Which means you are either going to hear "Man! The Texans won with a third-string QB!"...or "Damn! The Texans wouldn't have lost if it wasn't for having a third-string QB behind center in the post-season!"

That's just the way it is. Unlike Tebow, who is now the starter after Denver released Orton, Shaub is the Texans starting QB and Yates was #3 on the depth chart. That's just a fact. It's no insult to Yates, the Texans or their fans to label him as such.

Yeah ...the media says it over and over again......getting worn out if you ask me....

1. It makes a good story.

2. It's true. As good as TJ looks, Gary made no sign of putting him in over Leinart when Schaub was injured. TJ was Gary's 3rd choice as a starting QB. The fact that Gary has to play his 3rd string QB because the first two are injured doesn't change that.

The 3rd stringer is having success as the current starter!

Yes, we understand it's "technically" true, but Yates has been playing QB for us for 2 months now. He's no longer a "third string quarterback". He's the starter.

Yates is the starter period end of story because no other QB will play untill/unless he gets hurt. That is just a fact.

& he's only going to get better on the field.

Tj Yate's getting better on the bench days are behind him. Kubiak's approach to protecting him & developing him on the field has been nothing short of amazing & the way Tj has developed is just as amazing.

I think Tj has more upside than Schaub so the Texans have more upside with Tj.

All that said, I'm not saying that Tj should be the starter opening day next season. I don't believe that. Matt still gives us a better shot to win.... Today, if Matt were healthy I'd start Matt over Tj.

I firmly believe in playing the guys who give you the best chance to win "today" I'm only being honest in saying that Tj's learning on the bench days are behind him.

I know it isn't Kubiak's m.o. but next year I would be looking for more opportunities to get Tj in the game. If we're blowing teams out... or even a comfortable lead before the half, I'd throw Tj in there for 2 minute/4 minute drills & to close out games.

Yates is the starter period end of story because no other QB will play untill/unless he gets hurt. That is just a fact.

BTW, should TJ got knocked out of tomorrow's game, who's next in line? Trust me, should Flacco go down, the Ravens only have rookie Tyrod Taylor, a 6th round pick out of VA Tech. That is not a comforting though, seeing as how he's only taken two snaps in the regular season.

When I hear big time football analysts talk about TJ being "third string" I'm not bothered at all. It just makes our wins look a hell of a alot better.

It does bother me, however, when I hear texans fans call him 3rd string because realistically he is very far from it. TJ could start for good quarter of the teams in the nfl!! Right now he is our starter and number 1 at qb so let's show him the respect as our number one guy. Just sayin..

Yates may not be as good as Schaub, but he's at least proved himself far enough to not be written off as "the 3rd string QB".

Trust me, Yates will be 2nd string under Schaub next year. If Schaub doesn't come back from surgury in time, Yates will start. Hot Tub is outta here.
