Rick Smith?

I know he is not a favorite around here...but like Kubes...let's give the man his dues. Five years ago we were one of the worst teams in football...today our talent and potential is truly awesome. I would guess the GM would have something to do with that?

Prior to the 6-10 season, most people were happy with the work that Smith had done. The jury was still out on some of those drafts but there was a good general feeling about him.

And then Kareem Jackson and the 6-10 debacle happened and it gave the people who hated Kubiak and Smith all the ammunition they needed. And there wasn't really much you could say to defend Smith. Especially with the crown jewel of his drafting prowess spending 4 games on a PED suspension.

But now... He's looking pretty good again. He's laid the foundations for this team. There's a lot of talent on the defense.

We need to turn that attention to the offense this year. Get a WR or two, maybe an interior lineman... another TE...

Only GM that has done better IMHO is the Saints GM...because of one move...bringing in Brees. Besides Peyton Manning, he is the best player I have ever seen play the game...better than Brady and Montana.

From off season acquisitions of Manning, JJoe, and Wade to drafting starting talent with Watt and Reed, Rick Smith had a hell of year. Hats off to our GM. :kingkong:

I don't understand the Kareem hate. First, it usually takes 2 or 3 years to figure out what CBs are going to be good, second... Houston gave up 18 passing TDs ALL year. Put that in perspective... that tied us for sixth. We were 2nd in passing yards allowed for the year. It is IMPOSSIBLE for him to be THAT big of a problem on a defense that good. Yes, he makes some bad plays... and he doesn't get his head around quick enough sometimes, but he was not the 2010 version. He's not JJoe but he's certainly better than he was last year. Who knows, with an off season to improve you might see a stud in a year or two.

As for Smith. He has done an amazing job. You can't look and say "well he did this well and he did this poorly....." He has built a deep team that can win in the playoffs... I don't care if he missed on some guys (32 teams missed on Arian a total of 7 times each...) you have to look at the talent he puts on the field. The list of teams with more talent (even in our injured state) than us is very short. That is Rick Smith.

Rick Smith has done a very good job. If Schaub were healthy and playing, we'd be seeing the full effect of our offense being very dangerous on both running and passing. As to K. Jackson, well, I'll give him one more year before I start seriously dumping on him. As of now, I consider him still a work in progress. He's shown flashes of being very good, just not as often as I'd like and his mistakes are still overshadowing his good plays.

I don't give him any pops because even though everyone misses, he missed BIGTIME on Kareem.

Honestly as much as I have been disappointed in Kareem I think the jury is still out on this one.

As much as a liability as he has been, he played well in other games and in this one as well.

3rd year players usually break out and have their best performances. So let's hope he can continue to hold his own and break out next season.

He's had misses, but I don't think there has ever been an NFL GM that has never had those. I count coaches who have a lot of input in the draft (Belichick) or that act as the GM (Shanahan) in that statement as well.

Smith has been ok but I think this years defensive draft is more of who Wade wanted than Rick Smith.

What you're really saying is

1. Thanks to BoB McNair for opening up his checkbook (Hiring Wade, signing J Jo and Manning) FINALLY

2. Ltting Wade pick the players he wanted for his defense. I'm not how much Rick Smith had to do with this. Do you think it was a coincedence that Wade was hired and all of the sudden Smith started drafting great defensive players. I dont think it was a coincedence at all. There's 5 yrs of prior evidence to back this up.

3. Who cares, the talent finally got here and the Texans have finally put a winning product on the field after a decade of not so patiently waiting.

GO TEXANS

How about Brown? Who saw him coming off the board at sixteen? Pro Bowl left tackle for the next ten years...Smithiak was roundly derided for that pick.

I could be wrong, but I believe we took Duane at 26 after trading down from 19 to the Ravens, who took Flacco. Great choice all around, though.

IIRC for the year ...0 sacks allowed...0holds...that's elite.

Alex Gibbs going away gift.

Thanks, HOF Alex Gibbs

And no, not everybody derided Rick for the pick. ( I was fully on board with the Brown pick) Brown was Gibbs handpicked choice as LT for the next 10 yrs. HOF'ers tend to hit on picks alot more than they miss. Funny how that works.

Just as Wade unquestionable had significant input on defensive personnel in this past years Draft, OC Alex Gibbs was known to have significant input on the Duane Brown pick in that years Draft.
