Eat Crow Myers Haters

Currently topping our rankings for the center position is a player who has been primed to take advantage of any slip from Messrs.’ Mangold and Birk for a while now, Houston center Chris Myers (+18.9). Myers was our third-ranked center last season and ranked on a par with Birk and Mangold in terms of his run blocking ability, but was let down by his pass protection. This year he has elevated his play as a pass protector without losing any of his fine play as a run blocker in the Houston zone scheme that he fits so perfectly.

Myself and all of the others on here who have defended Chris Myers from the beginning, let's all give ourselves a pat on the back if you haven't already.

The haters? Eat up (yea its a chicken but pretends its a crow) :chicken:

well, he blew in the beginning so you really didn't look so good defending a guy playing badly...but then again, nobody is arguing that he isn't playing at a different level now.

Well I can't speak for all Myers' defenders, but my stance the entire time was give him time and let him develop, as every player deserves a learning grace period. People flipped because he had a few freak plays that looked especially bad and jumped to conclusions.

In fact, if the front office wasn't as irrational and impatient as the Myers haters on this board, maybe they wouldn't have wasted a 3rd round pick on current bust Antoine Caldwell. Mike Wallace was selected 7 picks later.

Um, he was drafted 3 years ago. People wanted Myers released just a few games into his Texans career.

If after 3 years the player can't even get onto the freaking field, over an undrafted guy at that (Brisiel), or a low-cost free agent cut by a 12 loss team the previous year (Wade Smith), then it isn't irrational or impatient to write him off. Myers has started and played almost every snap since he became a Texan. Try again next time, son.

Caldwell was supposed to be able to play guard too you know. If he was worth a damn he would be in there. You can blame that on scouting. Frankly the FO was very patient with Myers. They plugged him in and showed confidence in him despite his poor play.

Myers sucked his first two years, even coming in as a 4th year vet. So you're saying it's ok for Myers to suck for 5 years but Caldwell is written off after two?

Impatient, irrational, ironic...

Huh? Myers never sucked for 5 years. He was an ok, just-a-guy kinda player in Denver but didn't suck. Watch games. He didn't suck his first two years here either, he had some bad isolated snaps that got him alotta negative publicity, but on the whole was solid. He's now become spectacular.

Caldwell has shown basically nothing. How can we even evaluate or compare a player who can't even get on the field? This comparison is ridiculous.

I hated Myers in the beginning. Couldn't, still can't, shake the image of Kris Jenkins throwing him around like a rag doll.

But the last two years he has been a rock at the center position for the last year and a half so good for him.

Lots of players I thought where trash have stepped up this year, Myers, Smith, Cushing. Even Quinn taking over safety has gone better than expected.

Caldwell was expected to start over Brisiel but he has be dealing with injuries.

And yes, Myers SUCKED and got manhandled his first two seasons in Houston.

You also said Dorin Dickerson would break out this year and be our #2 receiver, but I don't see you making a thread to eat crow about that.
rim shot :htown2atx:

On the larger topic, can someone please point out a Myers hater? Most people I talk to (that are hard core followers) are all pleased with his play.

Caldwell has never been an expected starter. He's done nothing but lose camp competitions for a starting guard spot. The average NFL career is 3.2 years. In year 3, Caldwell is still not even on the field. There's nothing irrational or impatient about casting judgment on this player at this point. Right now, he's the offensive guard version of Antwaun Molden.

Didn't the Schaub throw for the 7th most yards all time with Myers as his center? No QB can do that with a sucky center dude.

Hahaha I take full responsibility for that. Go ahead and make a thread and present me my crow, I'll take a full bite.

I'm a man of my word. I'm accountable.

Go back and read the preseason threads and Texans news. Caldwell started all preseason and was expected to start week 1 vs Indy.

Schaub did. :cow:

Ya just never know when a guy is gonna turn into something. signed Jacoby Jones. (betcha thought I was gonna say Kareem Jackson)

Myers had a high ankle sprain his second season I believe. It happened in camp and I'm sure it never healed completely that year. He has progressed ever since.

I'll eat crow (pass the salt)
I wasn't happy with him.

Jenkins posterized him and with the texans failing at short yardage time and time again, he was part of the reasons had reasons at that time

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out the glory here of this thread myself Vin. I mean, where were all of these Myers haters to begin with?? It's not like he was ever even relevant enough to have a ton of haters. If he did, it was because he wasn't playing well, so the criticism was warranted. What is next, some thread where a die hard Jacoby Jones fan is beating his chest because he has a stretch of impressive games and calls everyone a bunch of haters. Lol! This thread is silly.

Myers struggles when he faces large athletic NTs. He had difficulty with Ngata Soliai, Aubrayo Franklin, and Seymour. He would struggle against Raji or Wilfork as well. That's not a knock on him, but a 292 lb center is simply no match for a 330 lb NT. There is only so much that can be done when you give up 40 lbs.

In fact look at the way the wording of the article

"Myers will only face two “true” 3-4 defenses, along with the Ravens who play some 3-4 but operate with a nose tackle on most plays, and those tests are behind him. For the rest of the season Myers faces the sort of 4-3 defense that he excels against, working laterally to pick up and pass off blocks from guards and working to the second level."

See, Myers excels against the smaller quick DTs that routinely are on the field in 4-3 packages.

Myers success this year is partially due to being healthy and not having to deal with a lot of 3-4 athletic NTs.

Well I personally had some pretty intense arguments with some posters on here about it, specifically before the 2009 draft. There was quite a campaign building to draft/sign Myers' replacement immediately because "we couldn't go on with him as our center." My argument was his negative plays had been magnified by the media and people on here, and he really wasn't as bad as he was made out to be when you look at his body of work. The argument carried on past the draft, into the 08 and 09 seasons, all the way to last year when people started to come around on him.

That's cool man. I just never even thought of Myers as a guy that anyone would have argued that much over any way. It is very good to see that he is having a breakout season. :tiphat:

Personally, I think it was the drafting of Caldwell that kinda lit a fire under Myers. As I recall, it was speculated by some of our draftniks - during and after the 2009 draft - that Caldwell was selected to take Myers' job. And to Myers' credit, he stepped up and didn't let that happen.

Also could be true, good point.

bottom line is Myers strength is his second level ability and his nimble feet, not his smash mouth blocking. That can be said for many centers though. Its a strange dynamic at the center position because the C is usually the smallest linemen on the O-line (they have to be more flexible than most of the mammoth linemen in the NFL) but the center usually always blocks the largest player on the defense (NT) when facing an odd front. So long story short, Myers plays best against even (uncovered ie 4-3) fronts, and isn't as productive vs an odd man front (3-4). I'm backing up your post, not educating you fwiw.

DUDE!! Are you that ignorant?? I've stated many times that I bagged on Myers and since have eatin' crow.... yet several times!! Get over yourself as the "all know of everything about everything"!!!

Please!

Myers also threw one hell of a retirement party for Kris Jenkins...so I hear hahaha.
To this day, I've never seen a grown man more manhandled and tossed around like Myers was in that game. Call me a hater, realist, or whatever you want. It's a fact. In the words of Pedro Martinez, Jenkins was Myers daddy after that game.

I ate my crow in the last thread about Myers .... He made a big leap last season and its carried over to this season ..... Just hope he stays at this level of play (or better) for a long time.

Up until last year, I wasn't happy with the interior of our line. I wanted to improve our center and our guards. I was hoping Caldwell and Shelly Smith would step in and do some good. I was hoping Caldwell would improve the center spot and Smith, the right guard.

I expected Wade Smith to be another Jordan Black.

I was wrong. This group, with the addition of Wade Smith, really gelled and has been playing very well the past couple of years.

Man, I already ate up a big bowl of it but here's to another.

Just don't act like the criticism at the time wasn't deserved. Good on him for making the jump from extremely medicore to above average but he WAS extremely mediocre for a good long while.

Do you really think Schaub could throw to Mike Wallace? We would have to have a cut off man to get it deep to this burner. He is in a perfect place for his skill set.

I thought he sucked a couple years ago, which he did. He's playing good now. If that's considered "eating crow"....okay

Uuugh...Din't we have one of those? :D

If you see Myers playing one of those guys one-on-one, something went terribly wrong.

The reason so many people thought Myers sucked, is because they try to compare him to Mangold & other traditional centers. Centers who play the NT one on one.

Myers is a technician at slipping the NT to a guard, he gets to the second level & blocks an ILB. He's done that very well ever since he got here.

The thing that worried me was that Myers was a 3rd year pro at the time we picked him up. Usually a player has shown what he can do by then. I'm glad that he figured it out, and I imagine got coached up. I think one thing that hurt him was that first impressions were somewhat bad and it took too long to shake them.

The problem with Myers is the same problem, Shaun Cody, & Kareem Jackson have.

They are being judged from an ideal most of the fans share about the perfect player to fit that position. For Cody, it's a big fat athletic NT. For Kj it's a play-making shut down corner.

When we got Meyers, everyone wanted Mangold. So they're judging Meyers by the "what would Mangold have done" standard.

Even though they play the same position, they are two different types of centers who go about their jobs totally different ways. Mangold is the anchor of his line. He is the Keystone. He takes on NTs one on one & fights that battle in the trenches.

Meyers does not. The Guards man the battle in the trenches, the Guards take on those one on ones. Meyers job (like a LB) is to get free into the second level. His game, the technique he practices, is all about shedding that NT, quickly getting to the second level, & making life miserable for the first ILB he sees.

He's been doing that since he's been here. I personally think he's grading out better now, because his efforts are being realized now that we have better play at the guard level.

If you see Meyers one on one with a DT, something went horribly wrong.
