I was reading the "loathe the Titans" thread & it reminded me how there was a vote for the name of the new team. As I remember, "Oilers" wasn't even on the ballot.

If they were to do it all over again, or if you were given the two choices, which would you have chosen?

& Yes, going with "Oilers" you'd have kept their history (for this exercise).

Mods if you can make this a public poll I'd appreciate it. I forgot to check the box.

Oilers wasn't an option back then because Bud got the league to retire that name and got all the Oiler history for the Titans. I think back in 2002 I may have still wanted the new team to be the Oilers (with the history), but now I'm keeping the Texans. The Oilers are in the past.
 
I think the Oilers and their history should have stayed with Houston. It still blows my mind that the Browns had the foresight to see this coming, but we are obtuse, and here we are.
 
The Oilers are like my ex-wife, gone leaving only some fond memories and plenty of bad ones that I do not like to dwell on.

Texans are like a new woman flirting with me but when I try to get more involved she runs away. I'm about ready to increase the time I spend reading novels. No cost (library), if the inside doesn't match the cover I exchange it and the emotional turmoil in reading is slight.
 
If the history of the Oilers could have stayed, I would have liked to have the new team called the Oilers. But I'm happy with the Texans now, I couldn't image them having a different name.

I remember not liking that name when it was first announced, but I do remember liking the logo, and still do.
 
No way. Was happy to have a clean slate and we haven't even remotely approached the mediocrity that was Bud and the Oilers. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

It's a very interesting comparison. Reading the Browns wiki is revealing.

I did not realize that the day after Modell announced the move, Cleveland voters overwhelmingly approved $175 million in tax dollars to refurbish old Cleveland Municipal Stadium.

They filed over 100 lawsuits against Modell. Actor Drew Cary held a "Fan Jam" to protest the move. Rival Steelers fans joined in to protest, actually holding a protest during during a Browns game in Pittsburgh that the media refused to cover. Advertisers pulled out, fans pulled stadium chairs out and threw them on the field during the last game, and the stadium was trashed in protest.

The NFL, Browns franchise, and both cities pounded out a legal settlement to keep the name and history with the city. An expansion team was basically guaranteed at that point, and it was just a matter of building a new stadium.

On the flip side, Houston Oilers fans....yawned, I guess. :yawn:

As far as TK's question, I'm not one to live in the past. History is what it is.

I would have liked the Oilers to have stayed here. Regardless of what people think of the history and Bud, the fact of the matter is that many of us over 30-somethings love pro football because of the Houston Oilers. It would have been fun to celebrate the 50th anniversary, especially the Luv Ya Blue years.

But, reality is different, and that is that. One day the Texans will be something more than an entertainment company, and the history of the Oilers will continue to fade with us 'old-timers'. Sooner would be better, but there's nothing we can do about that right now. Just wait it out and wear red on battle-red day and white on white-out day and shake yer pom poms hard.
 
I don't think Bud was going to ever relinquish the name to anyone.

He started it and named it after his business of Oil billions.

I'm sad they left, but would it have ever felt the same, even if the name and colors were the same?

I guess I need to ask a Browns fan.

No, the Texans are like the first woman you date after you divorce. At first you're thinking "Hey, she looks good and seems nice" but then as time goes on you start to realize that you've hooked up with a nut who might just be more trouble than she's worth.

The Houston Texans make the Oilers look better every single year that goes by. Ever hear that joke about the guy who got caught by the girl's father and was given a choice of either marrying her or going to jail? You know, where he's crying on their anniversary and says "I'd be eligible for parole today"?

That's how we're gonna feel when Bud Adams kicks the bucket here shortly. Say what you will about that team. I'm sure much of it will be right. Since leaving Houston they've enjoyed 6 winning seasons, one trip to the Super Bowl, and for better or worse this town would have crapped itself in joy over selecting Vince Young back in 2006.

We'd have been better off just meeting the old monsters demands and waiting him out. Just like Al Davis he's a short timer. Bob McNair I'm afraid is gonna stay stupid for a long, long time.
 
Cleveland is the only city to keep it's team's history, no? Cardinals have moved, Rams have moved, Colts have moved, Raiders have moved ... anyone else? None of those cities kept their team's history, right?

And frankly, while I loved the LYB-era Oilers, there isn't a ton of history worth keeping. Bud screwed up the LYB era, the team choked seven years straight in the '80s and '90s, and never even made an AFC Championship game. The Moon-era Oilers put up a bunch of stats, I guess, but they accomplished less with more, while the LYB-era Oilers fought their hearts out.
 
I would not have gone with Oilers......it wouldn't have seemed "real" to me if that makes sense. However, I want the history to remain IN HOUSTON which was my main beef in the Hate Inbreeding err Titans thread.

Honestly, it took a while for "Texans" and the logo to grow on me regardless of the fact that I was 100% on board. I wanted more of a killer/tough name. Don't know what as stuff like Vipers and stuff sounds cheesy, but still.....Texans had to grow on me.

I would have kept the Oilers name if we could keep the baby blue uniforms that I imprinted on! As far as history goes, I personally kept the Oilers' history. Earl played on my team, not on Tennessee's.

In an odd way the haplessness of the Texans endears the team to me because that's the way the Oilers were! :) My team doesn't have to dominate all the time. After all the fans that need a dominant team have left, then the Texans can win one for the meek that remain.

Well, they all kept it in the fact that if you look up any of those franchises, all the history is there, going back to whatever cities they played in. If you look up the Colts you'll find Indianapolis and Baltimore Colts stuff.

For Cleveland, if you look up Browns, you'll see the history of the team that's on the field now AND the history of the franchise that is now known as the Baltimore Ravens. If you look up the Ravens franchise, it's like they were the expansion franchise. I actually think it's kind of silly to do it that way. The Browns history might be linked to the new Browns, but all of that really goes with the Ravens who ARE that franchise. The Ravens are the franchise Jim Brown played for and won championships with. It would be like linking the Lakers and Timberwolves history in a way and awarding the T-wolves those championships the Minneapolis Lakers won way back when.

I'm glad Houston didn't do it like that because the Texans franchise is not the Oilers franchise. And as far as the history goes, that remains with whoever remembers it.

Repped. These were my thoughts exactly and I would only add that the Oiler brand is burnt for me on a personal level. Even if Bud would have left us the name and history, it wouldn't change the fact that the Oilers we knew were long gone for reasons that left a bad taste in our mouths. Then again, I'm not a Browns fan and thus can't comment on the semantics of a team disappearing and reappearing within a few years.

OK, many of us have related the old Oilers to being like an x-wife. I have an x-wife and she treated very similar to the way the Oilers did. Fortunately my current wife treats me a LOT better than the Texans do.

However with that analogy in mind, I recently saw a current picture of my x-wife and it gave me that feeling of being glad where I am right now. It was not very complimentary.

Houston is full of such diverse industry that it would be difficult to pick a team name that encompasses a single identity, so "Texans" makes the most sense. Maybe we could have been the "'Neers" for Engineers. We'd have an emblem of a graphing calculator on the helmet, and the team would place a very high value on stats.
