I know that we won, and I know that there were some legitimate penalties out there.

But by and large the Texans were being called for some penalties where:
1. No number was given by the refs
2. The infraction was well away from the play and did not impact it
3. The Steelers were getting away with identical maneuvers


For example:
Myers hands to the face penalty - Legitimate

Defensive holding that negated the sack fumble - No player charged with the infraction.

Manning block in the back - Absolutely no impact on the play

Dreesen's holding - Touching the jersey of a defensive player is now a hold? Why weren't the Steelers charged with similar

JJ Watts roughing the passer - The guy was pushed down into Roesthlisberger. Hitting Big Ben at ANY time during a live play should not be a penalty. That guy escapes more near sacks than anyone not named Vick



In short, we were cost 14 points and a short field by the crappy officiating. I would be pretty pissed if I felt we were playing sloppy (how many false starts did we get for example??) but these ticky tack "no number called" fouls where theres no chance to even see the infraction really bothered me

Looking at the way Kubiak was giving the refs and earfull at halftime I suspect that we'll compile a DVD of suspect calls and send it in to the league office.

...not that it ever does any good.

The JJ Watts one was total BS. He didn't even go for the knees. It was a momentum thing. Nothing like the Jared Allen play a few years ago.

Score should have been 24-10 at least. F'ing refs in this game!
 
The JJ call at the end really made me mad. I hope ESPN rips that call tonight on sportscenter. We should have won 31-10 but all the penalties kept calling us back. Its a good sign though that we were still able to win even with all of those bull**** penalties being called

Agree that there were some absolute BS calls today and it seemed like the refs tried their best to give the game to the Steelers, but Watt ended up hitting Roethlisberger low after the ball was released, that almost always gets called. If he'd gotten pushed into his hip, or his torso that probably wouldn't have gotten called IMO.
 
I'm willing to give the refs with block on the back on the return. It wouldn't have mattered, but they probably shouldn't take into account it was a punter instead of a CB or WR who could have caught Joseph behind.

Manning should have showed more awareness in who he was blocking.

But Watts? Straight up, 100% pure bullshit.

And yeah, I'm suspicious of the holding penalty on the strip sack, but theynever showed another angle, so maybe somewhere there can speak to it...
 
Watt got tripped on that QB roughing call, and Foster got tripped. However we got real lucky with that OD catch that hit the turf!!!!!!
 
I agree with all of that, except for the block in the back. Good call, dumb ass play by Manning. He was lucky he was the one that made the block in the first place.

Refs are in no business in making 'judgement calls' and say that Sepulveda wouldn't have been able to make a play. How do they know? Will they need to get JoJo and Sepulveda have a foot race to decide whether he actually could've made a different or not?

Watt also had the o-lineman's hands in his grill before he went down to the ground. Something Myers got called for earlier in the game.
 
They replayed most of the penalties. I thought they were all pretty legit. Would the Steelers have all those same calls go against them in Pittsburg.... I doubt it. It's bs, but it's the way it is. Today we were good enough to overcome it.:cow:
 
The refs were crap. The Watt call especilly.

I know that Dierdorf loves him some big Ben too, he was all up on his sack. After the incomplete third down, he called him marvelous or some ****. :lol:
 
The only one that got me going was the Watt at the end, it's a HUGE gamechanger and something they (the refs) should have been 110% sure off before making it a penalty.

I saw some holding on Mario, but what's new. All in all the penalties we got (except for the Watt) were at least plausable penalties, I can live with that.
 
Was terrible.

I don't care how cool Polamalu's hair is, when you jump on a guy a.k.a. leaving your feet a.k.a. launching yourself to make a tackle it is a flag AND a fine.
 
The block in the back should have been viewed just like an uncatchable ball. Manning didn't need to do it, but it wouldn't have changed the play
 
I was pretty unhappy with the refs the whole game. I'm glad that Watt call at the game didn't end up costing us, but the refs cost us 14 points.
 
I'm sure Kubiak will file some complaints. Doesn't matter though, it's over, we won, let's move on

The one I bolded is the one that really tweaked me today.
 
The refs don't seem to understand momentum. What the heck was JJ supposed to do to stop himself from being tripped into Rapistberger?! Complete and utter B.S. by the refs on that play. I hope that's reviewed by the league this week. I'm sick and tired of the coddling of the QBs in this game. Suck it up or be a kicker.

To me this is the bigger reason for optimism about this team. In the past they would have folded.

Same here! Everyone around me was yelling NO FLAG, NO FLAG! I just covered my face and said "please tell me they didn't throw a flag!!" I didn't want to look!
 
I was screaming at the refs all day. 90% of those calls could just have easily been no calls. Refs need to think about how much that illegal contact or whatever actually effected the play. Watt fell into Roethlisberger, Manning's block had no outcome of the play, etc.
 
Call me a conspiracy theorist, but this game was the de facto national broadcast for the 12pm slot. So maybe they just wanted the game to stay close the whole time in order to preserve ratings. 17-0 at half is not much of a game to stick around and watch if you don't care about the teams.

I think it's that, plus you know the historically "good" teams are viewed as being SOOOOOO good that a lesser team like the Texans MUST be doing something illegal to be beating them down like that.

It's like when #18 for the Colts would cry and stretch his hands out, begging for a flag when he wouldn't complete a pass vs. us. The general idea is that "There's NO WAY ON EARTH the Texans could have stopped me right there, throw a flag ref!"

And Colts fans react that way, too, as if there could be no other explanation for the incompletion by #18.

I think it's just basic "psychology." The refs, over time, get lulled into thinking that Steelers/Patriots/Jets/Saints must have been cheated by a defense if said teams didn't get a good play completed.

You gotta' become one of those premiere teams to benefit the way those other teams do. Until then, we're going to get jobbed from time to time. Plus, I think some crews are ran by whistle-happy head refs. Last week, the refs were letting LOTS of stuff go on both sides, letting it be a schoolyard fight.

In the NBA, the bad calls are often a result of favoritism or hate towards one player. Maybe Kubiak wasn't nice enough to the refs in the past.
 
Did y'all just see that NYG's call? If I were those refs, I'd go into hiding. Never heard the "giving yourself up" call

Saw that and laffed my azz off. What a boneheaded play by the receiver and call by the refs. It ended up costing the Cards 7 points and possibly the game.
 
Perfect day to complain about the refs. We won so nobody can say it is sour grapes or argue about whether it affected the outcome. And having said that the officiating sucked goat gonads. The JJ call was horrendous. The Manning call was just really bad.

Ditto. Horrid, horrible one-sided officiating today. It was like blatantly obvious and overt.

I thought they had just run out of flags.

I'm not getting into the penalties called on the Texans. But if they're going to call the game that close, how is it that the zebras missed all of the holding by the Steelers makeshift o-line? The Texans edge rushers were held on about every play. I guess the refs arms were tired from throwing the flags so often on the Texans.
 
Antonio Smith talked about it during his post-game interview.
"When you play this team you HAVE to beat the refs."
 
I watched the replay of the Watt penalty on Ben. First off, he was obviously pushed onto Ben by Pouncey. Second, Ben obviously sold the flag (kind of like what Schaub tried last week). I saw guys like Barwin and Watt fail to bring down Ben. It took Mario a good 3-5 seconds of tugging before Ben came down. But Watt's helmet hit Ben's thigh (not knee), with momentum going to the ground, not towards his leg. Ben instantly falls to his knees, bends backwards, arms flailing, and lays on the ground in pain. Schaub needs to take notes on how to act.
 
Both of the those were crap to me. I was sitting in the BW3 with no sound. I was def like WTF! Watts helmet hit Sir Rapealot in the ass and he rolled up on the back of him.
 
I just watched the game again. Pouncy not only blocked Watt into Rapistburger but he also had his hand up in Watt's grill. Just like what Myers got flagged for back in the 1st Qtr.
