The Texans best draft choice in history is.....

Wouldn't AJ be the obvious answer here?

Same with the Colts, why not put Manning in there? He's literally the reason that team is in the playoffs every year.

Edit: Just saw it was only the last 5 drafts.

I love how the Texans were slammed for taking Mario but now everyone sees it as the right choice (well, 98% of the people do).

I think Demeco Ryans deserves some discussion as our best draft choice over the last 5 years. 33rd overall pick, he's the leader of our defense. Smart, instinctual player.

I can understand how Mario would be considered the Texans best choice as he was A.) selected when most people thought Reggie Bush or Vince Young was a better choice and B.) He became a cornerstone on our defense that lacked talent besides DeMeco Ryans.

However, if it were up to me here is what I would have to say:

Best Choice: Andre Johnson hands down. Even with a weak offensive line and a quarterback with serious flaws, he found a way to produce and put points up on the board for the Texans.

Best Value: This is a tough one as I am stuck between DeMeco Ryans and Owen Daniels. However, I'm going to say it has to be Ryans. Productive and the obvious leader on our young defense, Ryans was a nice surprise in the 2nd round.

Worst Pick: There are so many players worthy of distinction so its hard to choose from. I would have to say Travis Johnson. He was supposed to be a major impact player at DT, yet, he came of as lazy and would flat out give up on plays. This, and he was also a punk on the field (e.g. Taunting Trent Green who was injured and on the ground helpless)

Trent Green went flying head first into his knee. He's lucky that shot didn't end his career. Not saying he should have taunted but I can understand why he was pissed.

I have to put Okoye over Johnson. He was picked higher and has been just as ineffective.

worst pick by far was David Carr. set back the franchise five years or more depending on your viewpoint. Just imagine we could have drafted Peppers instead :hankpalm:

3 Way tie :

3rd round pick DE Charles Hill
3rd round pick Qb Dave Ragone
3rd round pick Cb Antwan Molden

Best pick?

The only reason i wont say Andre Johnson is because people knew he was a beast and the Texans didn't have the choice to draft WR Charles Rogers.

Mario has to be best. The scrutiny they endured both locally and nationally was nuts. His entire rookie season people still ridiculed the Texans. How many people have had to appologize for calling the Texans fools? Listening to Rhome say he was wrong was "epic".

I had mentioned the same thing on my previous post but this article only goes back five drafts.

Amobi Okoye followed by K. Jackson are the worst picks in the last five drafts. K. Jack can still redeem himself but Amobi is what he is. A very average player in the NFL.

Duane Brown was a pick people were furious about. In retrospect he was a solid selection

I JUST GOT IT...

worst selection ever...ignore my previous post!

#2 RB Tony freaking Hollings

Way to outmanuever the rest of the NFL Charley.

I think you have every reason to write off Okoye at this point, but hold off on doing the same with Kareem because it's way too early to say he's a bust, though no doubt his first year was disappointing.

I think both players can still redeem themselves with new scheme & coaching, at least we can hope.

I think Amobi is not a fit in the 3-4. Not strong enough to play the NT position and too short to play the 3-4 end. I don't know where they will try to put him but I think this is his last year with the Texans.

The worse choice to me was when we decided to trade back into the 1st round, with a division rival, to select Jason Babin. In that same year we go with Bennie Joppru instead of Jason Witten.

It's about the past 5 years, guys. Not all time.

Past 5 years, I'd argue that the best was Owen Daniels or Demeco, not Mario. Mario was taken #1 overall. He's supposed to be a beast.

Worst has to be Amobi. He's played a lot of downs for us but he's not the beast we expected. Not even anywhere close to BEA let alone BEAST.

Was it really neccessary to bring that up?! UGGH.

just for that, I might as well bring up the PBurnt trade: 2nd and 3rd round pick for a CB that can't cover.

Amazing to think about how few 2nd round picks we've had. When we've had them, they have been good picks: Pitts, Demeco, Barwin (will be).

Here are the 2nd round picks we've lost:

1. gave one away moving up for Babin
2. gave one up for Hollings supplemental pick
3. gave one up fo PBuchanan
4/5. gave away 2 for Matt Schaub

Its really no wonder this team is in the state its in. The life blood of this team should be 2's and 3's. And as i posted earlier in the thread we've missed on a lot of 3's. As Dale highlighted...our 2's have down right sucked. We cant afford to miss on 1's and free agency if we're going to do that.

Wow, that leaves Ryans as the only second round pick to ever really make a significant contribution to the team.

3rd round is a little better but not great

Pitts
Antwan Peek
Jerome Mathis
Eric Winston
Charles Spencer (curse you Ron Dayne)
Jacoby Jones
Steve Slaton
Antwuan Molden
Antoine Caldwell
Earl Mitchell

I don't give this guy much thought. He did a horrible job with Indianapolis.

Best Pick:Antoine Bethea? Really. Ever hear of a guy named Peyton Manning? You know, the guy who basically keeps them going to the playoffs year after year? The guy who takes a 4 win team and makes them a division champion how many years running?

OK, how is the Titans spending the #3 overall pick for Vince Young not their worst choice? No matter what you think of the guy the bottom line he is no longer a member of their team (or won't be by whenever the next kickoff comes).

The reason its Mario is because 31 other teams would have gone a different direction. Its more about who Houston didn't take, than who they did.

I still think VY has the potential to be a great QB. Fisher simply handled him wrong by treating him like a man. If he lands in the right situation, I think he's got a lot of great football left in him.

I'm so glad I was dedicated to picking Mario instead of Bush or Young. The boards here must have been a war zone, lol.

That was the whole reason I joined the board. I wanted to see what other Texan fans were feeling and saying.

I was a D'Brickasaw Ferguson backer but I didn't have a problem with the Mario pick.

No disappointing is when i don't win the lottery, he equaled, getting on a plane to Las Vegas and landing to find out Las Vegas no longer existed.

Best: AJ
Worst: OkOye
Suprising: Winston

1.Worst trade: Babin, This genious move by Casserly set this franchise back so far they are still trying to recover.

2. Followed up by the brilliance of the P-Burnt trade.

My god the front office of the Texans has been really screwed up for a decade and counting.

While you and I disagree on many issues, I kinda think you're spot on here.... (Repped)

Thanks

Life wouldn't be fun if everybody agreed all of the time.

Respect is the key and you have my respect. You and the Gold Cup that is. LOL

DeMeco was our best pick. Mario is way too inconsistent and is hurt all the time. DeMeco has only been hurt one time. I hate to say it, but Mario is just like Julius Peppers in Carolina, only shows up when he wants to.

How is Anthony Gonzales not the Colts worst choice? He has been either average or injured. He is about as tough as a girl scout.

Mario's never missed a game...DeMeco missed quite a bit now and may never come close to where he was pre-injury. I respect the hell out of Ryans and think that he was the best value pick we've ever had, but to act like he's miles ahead of Williams is wrong.

Busting on Mario Williams for being hurt all the time is wrong. He's gutted it out for this team his entire career so far. Other athletes would have taken time off but the shitty reception Williams got on draft day seems to have fueled his desire to play through anything. He doesn't play hurt...he plays injured and in the long run, it's probably going to nag him...but I respect him for working for his checks.

This is a tired argument. I'm not saying Fisher handled him great, but if you are a great one you handle treatment like that differently. A great player may not dominate in all systems, but they don't get crushed by them. The guy is an average at best QB that believes his own hype and thinks he's Black Jesus. And as good as he could be () having to cut ties with thee 3rd overall pick makes it a horrible pick.

Mario went on IR and missed the last three games of last season.

In Mario's first year, he played with plantar fascitis and that was given as the reason why he didn't play better. He had a couple of great years. Then in 2009, his sack total dropped a little bit and after the season, it came out that he had played the entire season with a bum shoulder and couldn't raise his arm over his head. And then this past season, he gutted through an injury for most of the season and ended up on IR.

That's 3 out of 5 seasons that he's played injured. At least to me, that seems like he might be a little injury prone.

I don't think of Andre Johnson as the best draft pick in Texans history because he was only available thanks of Matt Millen being, welll "Matt Millen". If AJ had been taken and the Texans went after someone other than Charles Rogers who ended up turning into an excellent player then that would have been a great draft pick. AJ at that spot though was just obvious. Mario over Vince and Reggie probably was our best draft decision ever.

VY would of been boss here we would Of prob made the playoffs by now if he was here

Just image him in a red texans uni he would be boss

Last five years, I'd have to vote Demeco Ryans over Mario by a nose. Better value, every down impact, and diagnoses plays very, very well.

Worst draft pick is Antwaun Molden, IMO. At least Okoye has contributed as a warm body that plays. How bad a CB are you that your team goes out and signs a Dolphins cast-off in mid-season before they let you see the field? How bad a CB are you that you can't play in the 2010 Texans secondary? If you're a 3rd round pick, you are expected to develop into a starter on a good team. On the NFL's worst defense ever, I'd think you should at least crack the starting lineup.

Value picks - Owen Daniels and Eric Winston. Winston may well have been a first round draft pick if it weren't for that knee injury in college, and he's been a solid starter for us at the expense of a 3rd round pick.

Meh Winston when playing the elite de looks like he's playing on roller skates he gets made to look silly alot IMO

1st bolded) Nothing personal, but...Man, get a grip. Need to get up of that guy's jock. He's a basket case and has proven to be so as many or more times than he's proven he's not NFL starter material. NEVER WILL BE. CASE CLOSED.

2nd bolded) Just for the record. I don't like seeing any of our guys in those tampoonie unis. Just don't care for them, personally. TEHO

As an aside, will this be the first post I've ever seen you respond too? Inquiring minds and that...
