2011 Small School Prospects

rmartin65

Phil Kessel: Nice Guy. Tries Hard.
Its that time of year again- the NFL Draft, where 32 teams attempt to build their future teams to varying degrees of success. An important part of this process is finding contributors (not stars or even starters, just contributors) in the later rounds. While many of these picks play college ball at the highest level, there are some players that slipped through the recruiting ranks and landed at the FCS, D2, D3 or NAIA levels. Still others where dismissed from FBS teams, or transferred in search of playing time. This is my top ten list (except for centers- only top 3 due to extreme lack of talent) of each position.

A couple of disclaimers- since scouting small school prospects is obscure, 2 sites are incredibly valuable in, for lack of a better word, checking my rankings. These sites are jbscouting.com and nfldraftscout.com. While these rankings are useful in finding players to scout, and for comparisons sake, the rankings I am posting are completely my own. Also, you will not find heights and weights in this first set. Between the evidence on film, the measurements found on the aforementioned sites, the measurements reported by various all star games and the measurements reported by the schools themselves, there were just too many discrepancies. I am waiting until Combine and pro day measurements come in, and then I will post them with my new rankings.

I think thats about it. As always, if there are any questions (or suggestions) just let me know and I will be happy to answer them to the best of my abilities.

* Jim Bower may seem like a familiar name. He was on my last years list, as he was a senior last year. I missed the memo that he applied for, and received, an additional year due to medical hardship.

Appreciate the info, and the effort that went into it. Other than Ellis, is there 1 or 2 that you have ranked significantly higher than the others?

Yea, there are a couple. At RB, Taiwan Jones is far and away the best. 4th round pick based on film. The next couple guys are FAs, with maybe one sneaking into the last 2 rounds.

At WR, I really like Smith. He has all the physical tools, just needs better hands. I think he needs his eyes checked like AJ did a few seasons back. A lot of people like Shorts, but I believe Smith is quite a bit better.

Devlin is clearly the best QB, Fusco clearly the best OC.

It is a fairly weak draft for small school guys, I am anticipating that no more than 20 get drafted, and possibly only 15.

I've got some tapes on a few of these guys but haven't got around to it yet.
Thanks as always, rmartin.

Edmund Gates, I don't think he's gonna make it.
And I also have a lot of reservations about Devlin; he looks quite slow getting that ball out with much accuracy in that spread offense.

Gates is an interesting prospect. Great speed and athleticism, but smaller than his listed numbers, and probably wont get bigger. While I dont think he gets drafted or makes a roster this year, I think he makes it to a camp, maybe latching on to a PS.

Devlin is not an immediate return kind of guy. The physical skills are there, he just needs to be coached up for 2 years or so. It is a very weak small school QB class.

I take it back about Gates.
I haven't seen those footages on youtube where they spell his name Edmond Gates.
He looks really good!

And if he's rated as only #3, I have some Mount Union tapes that I can watch #2 Cecil Shorts.

I looked at your list of small school RB and did some research.I think Andre Harris is one of the most underrated RB out there. He was rated as one of the top Running backs coming out of high school. Had a rough road to where he is now.... He was recruited by several teams and on two different occasions he committed to D1 programs and both times the coach left. He ended up at Northern Colorado where they ran a 2 back set and he averaged almost 5 yards a carry with a below avg O-Line. I think that Tawain Jones is the #1 Small School prospect but I have Harris #2 at 6'0 220lbs he has the size to step in and play with the big boys. Here are some things I found on Andre Harris seems pretty impressive.

Always good to hear from new posters.

I considered putting him at 4 over Sylvester, which is very likely in the final edition of my small school board (which I should post about a week before the draft), but Sylvester's speed and versatility gave him the nod. Odim is ahead, because prior to his injury he was my favorite small school back- he had it all. Griffin is ahead due to his running style, which should translate to the NFL quite well. Good speed and shiftiness, underrated strength. Wont ever be a star, but he could be a 2nd/3rd back in the pros.

Here are my top concerns on Harris:

If he such an excellent player, why does Northern Colorado run a 2 back system?

- Runs upright
- Not real shifty
- No value in the KR game; limited in receiving

That said I expect him to make it to a camp, with a 60/40 chance to stick on a PS.

excellent first post. welcome :wesmantexanfan:

great small school prospect in Andre Harris. would be nice back-up for Arian Foster, tall, decent power with similar upright running style, can break some big runs second level. 6th/7th rd. grade?

Whatcha all think about Anthony Walters at FS?
I'll try to watch Texas vs. The Nation to see how he fared.
Any heads-up would be appreciated!

I am not a huge fan, but I see him getting a camp invite somewhere. Played CB at Delaware, needs to put on some serious weight to play FS in the pros. Willing tackler, as evidenced by his 75 tackles... good hands, but lucks out a lot with his picks (poor throws, not great positioning).

I see you have Christian Anthony who I thought was going to be a 3rd-4th round pick until the health issues this season. I think he received bad advice from who ever told him he should come out this season and not use up the medical red shirt he was granted. I don't think there is a team out there that will draft him.....and I think it will be very slim pickings in the UDFA department for him to......liability issues will come up.... I am pretty sure not to many NFL teams are willing to bring in a kid who had a heart attack and did not play one down this season...... He should have stayed in school and proven he was healthy enough to play football by playing another season at Grambling.

I think that if a school runs a certain offense you don't change it for one player.....even though they probably should have if you look at their record. He does run upright....but so have a lot of great RB in the history of this game. He has great size and strength and has showed the ability to break the long runs. I think at 6'0 220lbs if he runs in the 4.47 - 4.53 range and does 24-26 reps on bench he will attract some serious attention. He did score 11TDS on only 153 carries this season....... I remember Auburn had a pretty good 2 back set a few years ago

The difference between Auburn and Northern Colorado is that one is FBS (in the very tough SEC) and one is in the FBS. Also, both backs were top 5 picks, if I remember correctly. Northern Colorado's other back (Jhamele Robinson) is not even close to be drafted. There is a real talent discrepancy there, and any coach that is serious about winning would give the more talented back a lion's share of the carries.

Scouting small school guys is so difficult because of who they face. Yes, he showed good speed and power against FBS guys. However, what would he look like against FCS? Or the against the very best, the guys in the NFL? I dont have any inside information, so I am working strictly on film here- he does not look 220 lbs, and he does not run a 4.5 forty. He may in fact bulk up for the draft season, but I truly believe he did not play at 220.

The 40 time actually does not worry me. Some of the best backs in the league werent/arent blazers. The common trait is quick feet, balance and acceleration, 3 traits that I do not really see in Harris. You mentioned that many great backs in history have run upright; you are right. But they are the exception.

I am pulling for the guy, I really am. I pull for every prospect. I just see Harris as an great FCS back, an average FBS back, and a fringe NFL back.

Also, unrelated- if you wish to quote a post, there is a quote button on the bottom right of that post. Just click it and it will send you into the reply topic box, with the quote already in place.

Welcome to the board! Hope you stick around.

rmartin 65 thanks for welcoming me......what do you think about Lito Senatus? Also do you agree with me on Christian Anthony?

Senatus is ranked number 12 on my small school receivers list. Big body, but S.L.O.W. Seriously, its bad, worse than the predicted times. He may run in the mid 4.6s (and I would not expect better), but he plays in the 4.8s. Nice hands though, and tough to bring down.

Depends what you think of Anthony? Easily the most talented of the DEs, but his heart problem will scare off a ton of teams. I would not come close to sign of him, because I dont want him dying in practice or in a game.

Rrmartin are Ayodele and Iupati related to the Ayodeles and M.Iupati that play in the NFL? If so how good are they?

My sleeper DB guy is Clifford somebody is going to get a steal in this guy. Can you describe his playing style and abilities to the MB?

Ijalana,Rackley,Parker and Ellis are guys I hope the Texans are looking at in rds 2-5.

If rds 3-5 went this way for the Texans I would be a very happy Texans fan.

Rd3 Ellis
Rd4 Ijalana
Rd5 Clifford

Yep, they are related.

I am not really a fan of Ayodele, he seems like a classic case of performing for the money. When on he is an NFL talent, but he is not on as much as you want from an NFL player. Should get a camp invite, but wont latch on.

Iupati is also a player I am not wild about. He does not seem to have his brother's talent or work ethic. I would be surprised if he is more than just camp fodder. To be frank, if it were not for the name he probably would not make a camp.

Clifford is a beast! 5th seems to be good value. Good sized kid, could get to around 215 pounds without losing speed. Willing tackler, but what sets him apart is his hands and coverage skills. Willing to take risks, but not (usually) unnecessary ones. Tackles well enough to play SS, but covers well enough for FS. Should run in the low 4.5s.

just found that eval for them, also has film links on the evals, I think Gates is gonna go as early as late 2nd-4th round!!! SPEED KILLS

I would doubt that, but NFL GMs are (lady) gaga over speed. Fringe draft worthy prospect, but I would not draft him.

Andrew Iupati was a junior this year and was unblockable on all the film I saw this year, including against Cal Poly San Louis Obispo (1AA). He will be back for his senior season... we shall see

I thought he was entering the draft? Thanks for the heads up.

However, I am afraid we disagree on the term unblockable. 4 TFLs and no sacks is not unblockable.

Thats exactly what I think....huge talent....should have stayed in school to prove he is healthy. Prior to Heart Problems 3rd round......now wouldn't think about signing him..... I posted that earlier

Nope he is just a junior!!! He demanded a double team in all the tape I saw, when you turn on his film you see what I am talking about, he could not be blocked, u gotta throw his production out of the window... FYI in the films I saw he had 3sacks playing 1technique, I just checked his school's website and looks as if some of the stats may be a little off!

I saw quite the opposite in the admittedly little film I saw on Iupati. I saw him look good-great in one on one scenarios, when he was doubled he was smothered.

Are you seeing the right films? I just googled him, I believe those films are from when he played at JUCO. And no, you count throw production out the window. That is one of the biggest problems with scouting, people underrating stats. Sure the occasional guy pulls it off, but he is the exception to the rule. Lastly, I highly doubt the school's stats are wrong.

I could have sworn he declared... thanks for letting me know. Opens up a spot on the list.

Humboldt State's Stats and Sports Information is Horrible!!! I know this because I have dealt with them and there SID on many situations... They are kinda clueless... To much Hippie Lettuce maybe ;).
They have had Taylor Boggs (Center prospect) at times listed at 275 depending on what profile you see... he was 275 as a sophomore he has been 300lbs as a junior and senior!!! Iupati did not declare for the draft, and hasn't been @ Juco in 2 years, he was at Oregon as a sophomore in 2009 and as a Junior this past season at Division II Humboldt State in California!! Should be interesting to see how he does as a Senior!!!

I am pulling for the guy, I really am. I pull for every prospect. I just see Harris as an great FCS back, an average FBS back, and a fringe NFL back.

Welcome to the board! Hope you stick around.

Andre Harris weighed in at 222lbs at All Star game

Be fair now- you know guys bulk up for the draft season.

Anyway, does not change the knocks on him- runs upright, shows little burst and little wiggle.

LOL..... I am always fair....just wanted to point this out. I also found some info about him running a 4.38 but that was coming out of High School so he was probably 20-25 lbs lighter....

He was a 4.5 guy out of palisades/taft, I went to Palisades (many years before him)and always followed him. On the same token... he was always about 215- 220 even in HS!!!

Since you have been following him for so long.....what is your thought on him? Also here is the write up that says he ran a 4.38 40 at a Combine

Harris was a man amongst boys in HS (in a very competitive Los Angeles City Section) he weighed about 215lbs since his sophmore season in HS. He has always ran up-right and has never been a wiggle guy. That being said, Harris is a very physical runner and actually catches the ball well out of the backfield, he hits the hole very fast and has enough speed to hurt you although he is not a blazer he did have a 57 yd TD run vs Portland State this past year. He kinda reminds me of LeGarret Blunt

Well Blount had a pretty good year..... I heard Andre had a good showing at his pro day yesterday. I read he weighed in at 6'03 221lbs did 23 reps and posted a 35.5 vert. I watched a couple of Northern Colorado games and not really sure why they spilt carries.....the other RB not very impressive. Not sure if it was because Andre was a juco transfer and the other kid wasn't but it seems like if Northern Colorado gave Andre most if not all the carries they might have won more games and that coach would still have a job....

I agree 100%, as i watched the Michigan State Game, Andre held his own, there was no need for Northern to split carries, I was also told this morning by Andre's agent that he ran 4.61 on a slick BBALL court because of all the snow in colorado, he will work out again March 14th @ Air Force

Mario Harvey (ILB)

Here's an interesting ILB prospect out of Marshall. He's a little short @ 5'11", 250 lbs & a liability in the passing game, but is a very prolific tackler with a lot of upside. Would be worth a look for ILB depth in the 6th or 7th round. Any thoughts or opinions?

http://cdsdraft.com/profile.php?id=4942

Overview

Prolific tackler at Marshall, recording 400+ tackles in his 4 year career. Raw at the LB position, he is a converted defensive tackle.

Strengths

Plays low in his pads, and has cunning instincts. Plenty of upside, and excellent strength for a Mike LB. Played well at both positions in college. Sack artist, recorded multiple sacks in 3 games this season.

Weaknesses

Extremely raw. Most of his talents are built on instinct and physical prowess, rather than knowledge of the game. A liability in the passing game, doesn't rate high in pass defense awareness. Best fit for the 3-4 defense.

Projection

Projecting Mario as an undrafted free agent. If he performs well at the combine and senior bowl, he might peak the 7th round.

Any news on Air Force Pro Day? I heard they turned some guys away and didn't let them workout because of the lockout...... I also wanted to know how Blaine Sumner from Colorado of the Mines did..... I know he posted 49 reps and his pro day and was upset he didn't do 50..... I just want to see if he can do 50 and set a new record that is already insane...... Post if anyone hears anything....

Actually, I want to know how he looks in the position drills and other numbers. We know he is strong. We need to know more about his agility and technique. That said, I am pretty damn curious as well. I bet he gets it.

Yeah.....50 would be sick...... I hope Harris does well the scouts invited him to Air Force pro day to get another look since the conditions were so bad at Northern Colorado Pro Day....... He was 6'03 221lbs with a 35.5 vert and 9'11 broad jump....

Just a heads up, I should be posting an updated rankings in the next week or so. Turns out I am scheduled to work over spring break, so I am going to have a lot of free time to look over new information.

Look forward to it......

I think there might be another Small School Sleeper in the works...Baldwin-Wallace DE 10 KEITH DARBUT (6041, 229) pro day numbers...he benched 26 reps, ran a 4.38 40-yard dash, 1.42 10-yard, 38-inch vertical, 10'6 broad jump, 4.45 short shuttle, and 7.28 3-cone.

He was a first-team All-OAC selection and named defensive lineman of the year in the OAC in 2010. His 43 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, 11 quarterback hurries, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, and 40-yard touchdown reception.
