The Jacksonville Jaguars’ long odds of making the playoffs just got longer.

Jaguars quarterback David Garrard will have surgery on his right middle finger tomorrow, and he’ll miss Sunday’s season finale against the Texans, the Florida Times-Union reports.

That means the Jaguars will go with Trent Edwards as the starter, with Todd Bouman backing him up, 1010XL Sports Radio in Jacksonville reports.

In order to make the playoffs, the Jaguars have to beat the Texans and hope the Colts lose to the Titans.
I wonder who their 300 yard passer will be on Sunday?

Does this mean we finally get a win, and we get to keep our head coach, because beating a 2nd string QB is a step in the right direction for this franchise!?

Take your most of characterization and jump into a bayou. Stick to I don't want...
Is there a bayou in New Mexico? Because clearly the best thing for the future of this team is the best possible draft position. I DO NOT expect the players and coaches to go along with this mind set, I expect and desire them to play to WIN. But does a big part of me want them to lose so we can have a brighter FUTURE? You bet. Basically, Sunday is a no lose proposition for me. Texans win, I'm happy as always, especially since it would knock the Jags outta the playoffs and possibly win me some $. (season long bet with buddy over who gets more wins texans or cards) Texans lose, better draft position, which = win as well.

That's assuming that the draft pick, wherever he's taken, works out. Just because you have the 5th pick doesn't mean you'll get a better player than the 20th pick, or in the cases of Tom Brady, Terrell Davis, etc. a 6th rounder.

Since nothing is guaranteed, wanting your team to lose for a better draft pick is stupid. It gets you to accept losing, you take on a loser mentality. No thanks. I want none of it.

.. and then?

No, Texans only whup up on 3rd stringers. If it's a 2nd string and RB coach for an interm, we'll jump out to a lead (for the 3rd time this season) but then allow the Jag back in to win in the final minute.

Edit - scratch that. We need to find a new way to lose like we have for 6 or so of the games this year. The Jags will win when they return the Texans final kickoff for a TD.

Can we please get past the "if you root for your team to lose, you're less of a fan" mantra, because it's kind of ridiculous in this case. Especially when a loss greatly benefits this team and helps them more then a meaningless win ever would. I haven't rooted for them to lose all season either, but guess what I'm going to do next Sunday? I'm going to root for a loss and I hope they fall flat on their face and not only lose, but lose handedly.

Sorry, but when you have a owner who actively celebrates mediocrity, well he doesn't even deserve a mediocre team. What we have here is a snake oil salesman who comes out in the middle of a losing streak and tries to shove bullcrap down our throats and tell us how we're on the right track when the train already derailed....if a loss helps us to get a new conductor, well guess what I'm going to root for. I sure as hell not going to root for anything that's going to benefit Kubiak or help keep him any longer, that would be kind of stupid.

Here's to a loss on Sunday and the only difference between a 6-10 record and a 5-11 season is crappier draft position, which in the end doesn't benefit my team and right now it's all about the end game...the season is basically already over with

Exactly. This team winning the game does not win a playoff spot, but
loses draft position. One could argue that losing this particular game
is more beneficial for the franchise than winning this particular game.

You're introducing who is a bigger fan v. lesser fan. I characterized nobody. I only disagreed with the self-serving "most people are like me" and want the team to lose argument. State your own opinion not that of the self-serving invisible majority who hasn't actually voted. I disagree with you individually in hoping for a loss, big deal. I disagree with his characterization of Texans fans mostly wanting to lose.

It isn't even a argument, a loss is more beneficial for this team and I'm going to root for anything that benefits my team.

Every year I hear people ***** and moan about wanting a game changing DT or "insert random impact defensive player", well guess where guys like that usually go... They go pretty high in the draft.

I wasn't even talking about you....I'm talking about the mindset anytime somebody brings up how a loss helps this team in threads like this one. In other threads posters have pretty much been told how they aren't true fans, because they bring up the fact that a loss helps this team more than a win would.

Again, you're assuming a lower draft pick results in a better player than a higher draft pick. Case after case after case proves that drafts picks are a roll of the dice. Greatly benefits the team? Not even close.

:kubepalm:

Yes, you can get steals in the draft and better players go later all the time, but that doesn't change the fact that higher picks have more value and star players generally tend to go high in the draft more often than not.

Hell with this mindset we might as well trade out of the first round every year, because franchise QBs like Tom Brady go in the 6th round.

Jones-Drew will be out for Sunday's game too and it also sounds like he needs pretty serious knee surgery. Score one for Kubes, looks like he's keeping his job after we blow out the Jags.

Last friday I reported MJD out for sunday's game. Now reporting Jones' knee hasn't improved and barring miraculous turnaround OUT sunday.
Jones needs surgery on the knee but is holding off to see if they make the playoffs first. Tough dude

This means nothing, Garrard wasn't a world beater and Edwards has started in this league before...hell we just lost to a rookie QB who was only allowed to throw screen passes. As far as MJD being out, Rashad Jennings is no joke. He has talent and can get the job done. I'm still highly confident in this team's ability to go out there and pull out a loss.

This could backfire on JDR. Resting your starters for the playoffs is usually a double-edged sword.

:)
Not in the playoffs yet though

So you would have taken beating the 49ers in 2005 over Mario Williams?

That win over the Browns in 2006 that cost the Texans Adrian Peterson was a great one too

Lol. Jennings wasn't too hot when he was the bell-cow back last week. Edwards is too shy to throw deep and really exploit the Texans where they're weakest. That's a recipe for an end-the-year-on-a-good-note-and-give-McNair-false-hope-yet-again kind of game.

So we should write him off after one bad game...Jennings can make plays and has made plenty of plays when given carries.

I also don't care how shy Edwards is, we're talking about one of the worst defenses in NFL history...Tebow didn't have to throw the ball down field to beat us last week and I doubt Edwards will have to in order to beat us this week. I see Edwards coming in here and carving us up, because that's just the Texan way....letting some NFL cast off backup pull their pants down and have his way with them.

I'll be rooting for the Texans to win. As a few others have said, I never want my team to lose. If they lose, I'll be pissed, but not irate.

I don't even get mad anymore. I'm numb and desensitized to epic failures (which is what next week with be if we lose to a banged up Jags team).

I swear this team has given me PTSD :kubepalm:

Lol. Yeah, I dont really get super pissed, I jut get aggravated. I'll be agged for about 20 minutes, then I go about my day. Earlier in the season though it was a whole different story, lol. Losing sucks, and this year has just been so disappointing. :kubepalm: :(

Helping knock Jacksoffville out of the playoffs is a small consolation prize for me.

I never root for my teams to lose.

True enough..

Even if we beat the Jags, when they think back on what caused them to miss the playoffs (unless the Colts lose) they won't be sitting there and saying "Gee that Texans loss really killed us". They'll think back to the loss against Washington and the loss to the Colts.

Did he vye for a surgery that he waited for prior to playing washington last week so as not to be forced to follow up Tebows Come from behind performance against the spoiler texans? My finger hurts... LMAO:mariopalm:

the redskins loss was pointless also fyi. they were already behind the colts before that game

True, the Redskin game was pointless, if they won or lost. Also, the lost to the Redskins is non divisional game, so did not matter. Besides, the Colts still won vs. Raiders. The two games that haunt the Jags this season, the 4th quarter collaps vs. Giants and the Colts game. Piss poor coaching cost us on both. Simple Jack for 8 years and counting.
