I wake up this morning and wAtch QBs on sportscenter hitting hier rcievers in stride for touchdowns. We have the best reciever to play the game and have never been able to hit him in stride but alway seem to throw behind him for the simple reason that Schaub says gives dre a better chance to catch it and the defense less likely to intersept. That is Hogwash and that statement was given to Schaub by Kubiak Because Kubiak cannot tell us now that schaub is not the answer when obviously schaub cannot throw as far as a highschooler. I is a simple job of hide behind your coach with the Texans. The Lies, The Bad Health decisions, The horrible Defense, We have talent but we do not have a leader who can be honest when it is crucial that he be honest. This is pulling the wool over Bobs Eyes and how can we get the truth pointed in Bobs direction.

I'll be the first to disagree with you Joe.
I still think that Schaub is good to g0, yes he's not looking as good as last year but he was throwing very well then, so that tells me that something has changed since then.

First, I really think he is throwing behind to ensure that the ball is not picked off. He knows that with this defense that he MUST do everything he can to put up as many points as possible with no turnovers.

Second, He's been getting hit ALOT, the line has been great in run support but they are not giving him the protection he needs to feel comfortable in the pocket. We all know that he can't move...

I also think that the primary leader of the team needs to be the coach and it appears that none of them (Kubs, Dennison, Bush) can get it done. It will be much quicker and easier to replace them than to replace Schaub (see Dallas and Minn).

He just puts too much "touch" on his passes. It's why he had the RB screen pass picked off vs. the Eagles.

Something I noticed is that this guy is always acting mellow. His facial expression looks like he's just awakened from a nap. He can't run fast, even when running for his life. His dropback steps, right at the snap, are verrrrry slow and lethargic (instead of pickin' 'em up and puttin' 'em down quickly...which helps beat pass rushes).

We're always being told how cool under pressure he is.

Reality, I'm afraid, is that he's sooooo cool under pressure that he's not performing at a fast enough pace to beat blitzes/pressure, nor getting the ball out of his hand and being decisive about it.

I don't think this team would have won a single game without Arian Foster this year. You think it's bad right now? Imagine not having Arian Foster. Single-handedly carrying this team right now. Maybe Derrick Ward would have been an OK runner for us. Maybe.

Still, I was one of the ones on here who was very intrigued by the possibility of getting Vick once he got out of prison. I knew it wouldn't happen, but still...the thought was very intriguing. He's a guy who has an arm, and can run like the wind. Those types of QBs are not saviors all by themselves, but imagine Vick under center with Arian Foster back there. Imagine Vick with AJ running routes. Jacoby running routes. I'm just sayin'.....

If Schaub goes so too must Kubiak. Both have showed little progress with enough talent to win this weak AFC South division :slapfight:

I really do not understand how someone watches this season unfolds and starts a thread complaining about the QB play. AJ has been hit in stride plenty of times. Schaub does tend to underthrow AJ on deep routes when he is wide open. I think it has less to do with his ability to throw it farther and more to do with making sure the pass is completed. You know that we did finish that drive with a TD, right? By the way, I suggest you watch some old game film of Troy Aikman. I can count on one hand the number of times he threw a deep ball and hit the WR in stride. He invented the underthrown jump ball! All QBs have areas of strengths and weaknesses. Schaub throws a very catchable ball, which is why so few passes are dropped unless Jacoby Jones is in the game. Compare the ball he throws with McNabb's, for instance. McNabb throws a very tight spiral with the nose pointing down. As a result, he has lower completion percentages but also lower interception rates (thow he is less accurate than Schaub). The reason why those things co-exist is simply because his ball is difficult to catch.

Schaub is leading one of the top offensive units in football. What he did last year without a running game was quite amazing. Get some perspective! We are all very frustrated but throwing a fit about QB play is pretty silly. Show me the QB that would have this team in better position this season with mediocre pass protection and one of the worst defenses in the history of the NFL.

Because NO person should be safe from fair criticism.

We're so focused upon Kubiak, that we're possibly ignoring other factors of our demise. Matt Schaub, while he can be a reliable QB, is also POTENTIALLY starving this team of dynamic plays. Especially with the lack of hitting his WRs in stride.

He fails to hit them in stride on long pass plays. Period. He has done this to every receiver, especially AJ and many many times to Walter.

This guy struggles with two types of passes, IMO: Long ball down the sideline, and the across-the-field sideline pass. Both passes take three years to get there.

Anything in the middle, he seems to have zip on the ball.

Throw in the fact that he does NOT run when he can make 3 yards on his own, for a 1st down, and it's a recipe for haterade. Just sayin'....

Schaub is not the problem. Schaub is part of the solution.

KUBIAK AND HIS DEFENSIVE LACKEYS ARE THE PROBLEM!!!

Please, everyone get off Matt's back. Matt should be the hottest QB in the league right now, if not for his pathetic defense he is teamed with. What is so hard to comprehend about leading 4th quarter drives to take the lead in ALL FOUR of the most recent losses. In some cases, he gave them the lead with less than 2 minutes remaining.

Stop blaming people for things they have no control over. If the defense doesn't suck so bad, everyone is blowing Schaub and talking about how he is Mr. Clutch with come from behind victories versus Chargers, Jets, Jaguars, and Eagles coupled with a blowout win versus the Titans. Wake up everyone.

KUBIAK MUST GO FOR HIRING INCOMPETENT LOSERS AS DEFENSIVE COACHES!!

direct your vitrole there, not at Matt. Keep your head up Matt.

Ha, I had to pinch myself! I agree with a lot of what you said, SH. I do like Matt and think he can take a team to the Bowl. However, I think Matt might be trying to do too much this season given the position the defense is constantly putting them in. So yeah, I agree

Sure, nobody should be safe from criticism. On our blog, we were critical of Schaub after the week one win vs. Indy. We have certainly been critical of Mario Williams. We've been critical of Brian Cushing and Demeco Ryans when they have played a poor game or simply discussing areas they need to improve.

My issue is the attitude that we need a QB change in order to fix the problems with the team. That is ridiculous! In order of importance, here are the changes that need to be made:

1. Defensive coaching staff
2. Head Coach
3. Defensive talent/experience in the secondary
4. Upgrade at DT
5. More speed at LB

The idea that someone would be thinking about using limited resources (salary cap money and draft picks) in order to make a change at QB when all these other things need to be addressed... well, that's silly. On top of that, keeping a quality, veteran QB with the team in the midst of so much turmoil would help stabilize the offens (the one unit performing at a high level)...

or, perhaps, you would suggest keeping the defensive staff, ignoring issues in the secondary, and simply going after a QB high in the draft or trading away a 1st round pick for Kevin Kolb?

thats all fine & well but people have to realize the head coach & QB go hand in hand. Matt Schaub has taken on the personality of his head coach both on & off the field. the decision making included. :rake:

Thanks SH. A very reasonable stance/statement. As many, many others have pointed out, Matt is NOT the problem. As stated many times prior, if he didn't come out of the tunnel knowing he had to win the game, this would have been a different season. I feel there's plenty of bashing to go around but throwing Matt under the bus is just misdirected and IMO, just plain wrong. I don't cringe when Matt's under center with 2 minutes to go but I sure as hell shiver when the D is out there in the same time frame. I feel folks should get up off Matt's ass.

Then the personality and decision-making of the QB position would be solved by a head coaching change... not only that, but according to your equation, a change at QB with Kubiak left at head coach would destine the new QB to similar personality and decision-making problems that you've seen from Schaub.

you got it :)

trust me on this
anyone who wants a high profile HC candidate needs to realize that Matt Schaub is one of the major selling points of this job. Unlike Carr, who would have scared any qualified HC candidate away *sorry Kubes*, Schaub at QB is very appealling to propsective head coaching candidates.

anyone that wants even a chance at Cowher, JJ, or Gruden better realize that Matt is going to be one of the main things that make the Texans job attractive. Basically a defensive head coach can come in and be secure that the offense is in good shape and that they just need to fix the botched abortion that is the 2010 Texans defense. Scratch that, the botched abortion that has been the Texans defense since Kubiak arrived with his pathetic defensive coaches in tow.

Schaub is a damn good QB. Do you realize that he threw for the 5th most yards in NFL History last year? And the guy has made clutch throw after clutch throw all year but because the defense sucks, its all Matt's fault.

Sometimes I wonder about some people. People were patient with Carr year after year even though he showed NOTHING to merit such patience, YET when Matt gets here he isn't afforded the same patience even though he has shown loads and loads of potential and promise that justify and merit belief, trust, and patience.

Earth to fanbase. Come in fanbase. Your QB is a damn good QB.

Fire the loser Kubiak and fire his whole defensive staff. And fire Rick Smith while you are at it. That guy sucks too. He has had some good moves but they are cancelled out by the laundry list of failures and his inability to retain the only decent corner we had in Dunta. How is letting Dunta go working out for ya, Rick? yeah, thought so. You suck.

Agree. Without Matt, we don't even have a shot at Cowher, Gruden, or any of the other supposedly "name" coaches.

Everyone in this franchise with the exception of Bob McNair and Andre Johnson should be considered expendable for change.

I do not dislike Schaub, but, if a new HC wants a different QB, then get what we can for MS and move on.

I think he could be a solid QB if we had a well balanced team on both sides of the ball (i.e. Dilfer), but I do not perceive him to be a clutch QB that will force his will on teams when the game is on the line. Yeah, he's done that before, but it's not consistent enough to just know that he'll win it for you. The lack of a 2 minute offense has as much to do with our QB as it does with coaching, and his little INT to a freakin' defensive lineman against the Eagles is what it is at the end of the day. The coach had nothing to do with that boneheaded decision.

I am not so sure. I have seen Schaub scowling on the sidelines and looking very perturbed when the D plays its bend and break often defense or when the offense makes a mental error. I often see Kubiak looking at his Denny's menu and appearing to be calm, cool, and collected.

Matt Schaub isn't perfect and isn't playing near last years level but we're also running the ball more this year. I think the QB position could be upgraded but Schaub is good and we've got bigger issues with this team to deal with than QB.

I'm not upset at Schaub, I just do not see him worth two second-round picks,
and non-expendable. There are quarterbacks entering the draft every year,
playing backup on other teams, or in free-agency with more ability than Schaub. The biggest
problem with this team, is the coaches have NOT been able to demonstrate
ANY player actually IMPROVING as a result of their teaching.

In other words, players get WORSE every year they are a member of The Texans.
Coaches continually place players in positions where they have little-to-no
chance for success. One example: Steve Slaton is a constant touchdown
threat when he catches a screen pass. Kubiak will pound Slaton up
the gut five times straight, and won't toss Slaton a screen until next
season.

Everyone knows Slaton has talent, but he's failed by this coaching staff.
The same applies for a myriad of players on this team.

This is a qb driven league & im just not sure if trading away a solid qb for an unknown commodity like one you'd get in the draft is a wise move. Even if they hit FA & got someone, who out there is worth the risk of hanging our hat on? Noone.

They need to stick with Matt & get him some help...i.e. some scoring on special teams & defensive turnovers & short fields........& a better #2 wideout b/c walter isn't scaring anyone & JJ, well we know about him & his stone hands. Asking any qb to come out & at minimum lead the offense to score 35 pts a game just to have a decent shot at winning is too much.

Its the ultimate team game & its one of the main reasons i've always hated attaching the win / loss record to qbs.

It's a QB-driven league, but why do the contending teams have a viable
backup, or a strong defense/running attack to relieve the starter? The
Patriots lost Bledsoe, and ended up with Tom Brady. Tom Brady got
his knee blown out, Matt Cassel goes 11-5. Brett Favre goes down
in Minnesota, Tarvaris Jackson comes in. It's not like Schaub is on
the level of any of the QB's I named. The Texans need to call
first dibs on Kevin Kolb next year. Once Kubiak is gone, Schaub won't
remember how to play the position. Schaub is the prototypical "System
Quarterback."

I'm certainly not against keeping Schaub, and I would not have a problem if a new HC/OC keeps him as our QB.

I'm just not against trading him for value if that's what a new staff wants to do.

For comparison, AJ is a player that I'd never consider letting go at any point.

One of these statements can not be based on fact.

I see 4th quarter drives and 2 minute drills as different issues. Facts easily support both, because we have had many scores this season in 4th quarters, but very little success within two minute warnings.

You've mentioned offensive issues many times throughout this year, especially in the first half of games. In that light, I have been watching and I see very sluggish play from our QB in the first couple of quarters up to the Titans and Eagles games.

how is passing for the 5th most yards in history of NFL not worth 2 2nd round picks that would be blown by Rick Smith anyways.

Schaub was a bargain at 2 2nd rounders. Some of yall must have short memories, but things were tough before we got Matt. Yall need to dust off your old VHS tapes of the games. It was brutal and unwatchable.

Good QBs do not grow on trees. You have to pay to play in this league.

I just don't see how having the worst defense in the history of the NFL means Schaub is a bad QB. if not for Schaub we probably have 2 wins this year. Tennessee and probably the Oakland game. Schaub has won 2 of the 5 wins this year and should have 4 more wins than they have now.

So if the defense doesn't blow these 3 but arguably 5 games, are we still slamming Schaub and calling him expendable and not worth 2 2nd rounders. if the texans are 8-4 or better, would we be talking this way.

Man, people around here need to grab some reality and blame what needs to be blamed. Kubiak, Bush, Smith, Mario, No Dunta, Bob being cheap with roster, and the pathetic secondary 'kids'.

Has Matt played great? No. But he has played well enough for us to win all but 1 game this year, the Dallas game. People need to grow up and/or wake up.

the problem is alot of fans are still in recovery from he who must not be named. reality is they are still in denial because they've seen just how much worse it can be. I try to be objective & open minded because evaluation is my favorite part of College & NFL football. We all want Gary & Matt to succeed but the facts are overwhelming after 5 years its just not working as we all hoped. Clock management alone is grounds for upgrading BOTH positions, it falls on both the Head Coach & the Starting QB.

It seems the offense goes into every game, timid. The confidence
isn't there to start the game, but is built as the game goes on. Teams
that hit the Texans in the mouth, and keep it up, like the Giants and
Cowboys, blow them out. Teams that put the Texans away in the first
half, then fall asleep, allows the Texans to "save face" with so-called
"comebacks."

That **** works against bad teams. It will NOT work against the elite
of the NFL. Why don't the Texans walk INTO a game looking to blow
their opponent off the field? The reason starts with a "K."

oh and it would be nice to have a defense that doesn't suck balls...

Yeah, that'd be a plus. Here's something to think about. Here's our opponents point total in all of our losses.

Dal: 27
NYG: 34
Ind: 30
SD: 29
Jac: 31
NYJ: 30
Phi: 34

So yeah, offensive issues are on the back-burner for me. That's friggin ridiculous

Would your head explode if McNair brought in Cowher and he traded Schaub? :winky:

I'm not down on Schaub, and I'd like to see what he could do if he was given the chance to run an offense without Gary micro-managing everything.

I'm just not sure what the problem is regarding the lack of a two minute offense, especially considering the weapons available. I tend to think it's Gary refusing to take the training wheels off, but that's just speculation on my part because we don't really know the details going into those decisions.

agreed. they don't start the games with passion and confidence.

oh and it would be nice to have a defense that doesn't suck balls...

It would also be nice to have an offense consistent enough to stay
on the field. As it stands to day, the offense spots the opposing defense
an average of 10 full minutes of TOP at least to start a game. If you know
your defense sucks, you must use your "so-called elite" offense as your
defense. The Saints, Cardinals, Patriots, Packers, and Colts did it, why can't the Texans?

Oh yeah. They have (had) elite quarterbacks. My bad.

Have you seen the Colts Backup QB??

Brett Favre goes down
in Minnesota, Tarvaris Jackson comes in.

You gotta remember this was against the Bills. Not one of the Defensive powerhouses in the NFL. Not such a good example.

ANOTHER Schaub thread? ****ing kidding me.

Of all the things you can look to complain about.....MATT SCHAUB IS NOT ONE OF THEM!!!!!!

What a bunch of horsecrap. If the Texans defense was just bad instead of god awful, how many comebacks would Matt have led the team to? Man, some of you people just complain for the sake of complaining.

Schaub is what he is. He doesn't make many big mistakes but he doesn't have the arm to toss bombs around. I'd take him over 75% of the league. Are there better QB's out there? Yes. Is he the worst? Far from it.

Yeah, that'd be a plus. Here's something to think about. Here's our opponents point total in all of our losses.

Dal: 27
NYG: 34
Ind: 30
SD: 29
Jac: 31
NYJ: 30
Phi: 34

So yeah, offensive issues are on the back-burner for me. That's friggin ridiculous

Good point. Some would say, "well what changed from last year to this year on the D side of the ball?"

The problem is, we will never truly know what caused it.

What Schaub lacks cannot really be found in the stat sheet.
He gave away the Jags and Eagles games with poor play at the end.

You never hear Brady complaining that he has to keep scoring when his defense gives up 30.

You didn't hear Vick complaining when the Texans took the lead from the Eagles.

You have to score more points than the other team.

We had chances to do that, particularly against the Jags and Eagles, but Schaub did not come through under pressure. He short-hopped a pass to Walter against the Eagles and he passed to Dreesen on third down in the field of play with no timeouts left against the Jags.

Those are the differences between a 7-5 team with a horrid defense and a 5-7 team with a horrid defense.

The defense is what it is.
We still had ample opportunity to win those two games and the qb failed when it mattered most.

It's a QB-driven league, but why do the contending teams have a viable
backup, or a strong defense/running attack to relieve the starter? The
Patriots lost Bledsoe, and ended up with Tom Brady. Tom Brady got
his knee blown out, Matt Cassel goes 11-5. Brett Favre goes down
in Minnesota, Tarvaris Jackson comes in. It's not like Schaub is on
the level of any of the QB's I named. The Texans need to call
first dibs on Kevin Kolb next year. Once Kubiak is gone, Schaub won't
remember how to play the position. Schaub is the prototypical "System
Quarterback."

Come on Dex, you're smarter than that.

#1, Kolb can't even hold his starting slot in Philly & showed next to nothing in his starts this year despite Reid backing him. & Matt Schaub with the 30th ranked defense beat Cassel head to head this year so yes he's definitely on par with him. I'd evn argue that if Cassel isn't in the pats organization, he doesn't earn the contract nor the acclaim to even become the starter in KC.

#2, lets not pretend that the patriots knew what they had in brady or what he was going to become. yes they drafted him, but they also passed on him 5 times before they did so. If they'd known, he would've been starting over bledsoe that year; i.e. it was just dumb luck. 2nd, Tavaris Jackson wasn't drafted to be a back-up, he was drafted to be the future. But b/c he was shaky, he was instantly slabbed for Favre last year & coming into this year, he was slated to be in a battle for the starting position with guess who? Yes, our very own "viable back up" Sage Rosenfels...pending favre decided to hang it up.

Furthermore, winning organizations are strong from the top down; Owner, GM, HC, HC staff. I think we all agree that we are deficient in more than a few of those areas, which areas those are.....

Some in here seem to think that solid qb's grow on trees. Have we forgotten the Carr/Ragone/Banks era that fast? Schaub's not the greatest at anything, but i think he's put enough on film to say that he's a competent starter & not just a system guy as you proclaim.

He gave away the Jags and Eagles games with poor play at the end.

I would have to disagree that Schaub gave away the Jags game with poor play at the end. Their poor play was in the first half going down 17-3. He rallied the team to tie the game with seconds left on a TD pass to KW.

I am not saying that Schaub would have won the game in OT. Just that he did not play poorly at the end of the Jags game.

My biggest problems with 2010 are :

1. Defense....the personel on this team doesn't equal the worst defense in the history of pro football but thats what the prodction is.

2. Offensive production in the first half of games. We know the defense is bad but the offense contunes to do nothing in the first half of games. They are not doing this crappy defense any favors by falling behind week after week.

The best way to make your defense look better is to make the other offense one dimensial the Colts have been doing this for years in spite of year after year having one of the worst run defenses in football. How do they do it??

Their offense gets them the lead early and makes other teams have to abondon the run and throw to play catch up, thats when they unleash their pass rushers and let them create havoc.

The offense doesn't always have control over this. If you don't get the ball 1st, you can't score 1st. If the defense comes out & gives up 7 pts at the drop of a hat, you're behind the 8 ball already.

I see 4th quarter drives and 2 minute drills as different issues. Facts easily support both, because we have had many scores this season in 4th quarters, but very little success within two minute warnings.

It would be interesting to know what the NFL's success rate vs Schaub's success rate inside 2 minutes is.

When within a score we've taken the lead twice (KC, NYJ) plus we took the lead in Washington with 2:03 left.

He failed against SD (even though that really was more on the receivers). I can't think of another, but there may be one.

Ha, I had to pinch myself! I agree with a lot of what you said, SH. I do like Matt and think he can take a team to the Bowl. However, I think Matt might be trying to do too much this season given the position the defense is constantly putting them in. So yeah, I agree

I am glad you have come around and agree with me, because it is what I have been saying for years. Kubiak sucks and the team has not attracted top talent on the field and in coaching.

The only thing that has surprised me this year was Myers has played at a high level and the manner in which we lost in the embarrassments (choose one)

Anyone objective knew the scheme (LOL) and the secondary were going to
be full of unmitigated fail. When your defense sucks, and it did, you don't stand pat and then losing your #1 corner.

You could see this coming a mile away
Thank god, Peyton isn't getting any younger but neither is AJ. There are no excuses. This is on you, Kubiak/smith

Actually, coming into this season I was neutral on Kubiak. Obviously I'd like both he and Bush fired now. I don't think McNair's going to fire Kubiak due to the CBA and his extension. Bush, on the other hand, is an absolute must for me. If he's here next season I will not follow as much as I have since 02. After the year my family has had, there are more important things in life than a damn football team.

I still disagree with you by saying McNair is cheap. So we still have that to argue about. And no, I don't want to get into it right now. :)

I am not really trying to throw Schaub under the bus, I am more sick of the stupid excuses with schaub under throwing, Glover taught to Volley Ball a hail Mary, Kubiak is always having to cover for his boys and I am sick of that, If he would have made better decisions then he would not have to cover for the team.
It just popped into my head when I saw Breese hit his guy for a long score and wala he ended up in the end zone, I saw numerous colledge plays the day earlier and saw the same result while I see Schaub under throw every long ball he throws. If that is taught by the Coach then it is a Coaching Fail. Most of schaubs recievers are reaching back and there is an excuse for it. Glover screws the pooch and there is an excuse for it. Frank Bush screws the pooch and there is an excuse for it. I am tired of the Excuses, Pull your heads out of your asses and correct the problems and quit making the damn excuses.

No way Bush keeps his job
Kubiak may get a mulligan due to uncertainty with the CBA

Personally, they should use the Uncertainty to their benefit. Just swoop in and lock up Cowher/BestHCavailable while other ownerships are sitting on their hands.

The organization needs to be more aggressive and pro-active

They should have seen this coming

Yall know I have been Pro Coach Kubiak from day one but his excuses and the inability to get the job done this year is more than any fan can take, Kubes Quit making the damn excuses and man up and tell us the truth. Better yet let someone else do it there is no excuse for your inabilities, and while your at it get some help with the Clock.

When fans like Joe Texan are calling for Kubiak's head, you know the
writing's on the wall. The question will be: "Is Bob Mcnair illiterate?
