Value of Demeco Ryans: Before and After

gtexan02

Working?
A few things:

1. Demeco Ryans is the defensive quarterback.

2. His nickname is captain.

3. He plays both the run and the pass reasonably well.

Before Ryans was injured, we allowed:
20 rushes for 98 yards (4.9 yards per carry)

After Ryans was injured, we allowed:
18 rushes for 130 yards (7.2 yards per carry)

Just food for thought.

However, keep in mind that we have 2 weeks to prepare for a new MLB, whereas Diles had to improvise mid game yesterday. Hopefully Sharpton/Bentley will take over duties and allow the rest of our LBs to play in their usual spots

I think part of the defensive collapse was Ryans being replaced by Nixon but the other part was the defense being exhausted from being run up and down the field for 2 hours.

Demeco can go sideline to sideline when OL are not getting free releases down the field.. or Amobi parking in the lanes as he's getting driven down the field.. Our other linebackers do not have this type of range so it really hurts. The MLB is supposed to flow from inside out while the OLB contain the plays, the DE should set the edge allowing all others to flow to the ball.

We lose the sideline to sideline pursuit of Demeco in his loss, we lose him as the captain making the plays/adjustements and making sure everyone is lined up. We also lose someone who would cut their left arm off to make this team better.

Yeah, our inability to sustain drives (on offense) wore the defense out. This has been a problem in all games except the Colts game.

They are tired. Plus, the defense is allowing the opposing offense to get a lot of 3rd down conversions. The 8-minute drives by opposing offenses is brutal.

Throw Sharpton in there and let him gobble up those running plays.

The bright spots that I see are:
Our run defense was not stellar before Ryans. Maybe this will be the kick in the pants to the rest of the team to step up.

We were able to make stops when it really, really mattered, even without Ryans

This almost reminds me of watching P-Burnt line up with a 10 yard cushion on a 3rd and 5 .... Whatever happened to DB's jamming recievers on the line?

Add to that the Texans have been hammered time and again in the soft spots within the zones , between the LB's CB's and again between the CB's and S's.
They are gonna have to figure it out real quick if they plan on making a real push for a playoff spot.

After watching him in the night game yesterday he looked better than what we've seen in our back end

Funny how both Babin and Pburnt have restored careers now...

Although Pburnts team still gave up 400+ yards of offense and a loss to the Colts. Those few good plays at the end didnt make up for an overall very poor effort

I don't think the current coaching group gave Babin a chance. He was a DE in college, changed to LB, then changed back and dumped after one season for another crappy safety.

Imagine how good Ryans would be if he had a couple DTs to keep him clean. Remember a few years ago when Ray Lewis was having issues, before they got Haloti Ngata?

Finally at least someone understands how MLB is played and why having bad DT is a horrible experiene for a MLB..

Anyone want to trade for Richard Seymour, something tells me he would love to be out of the Raiders camp! :)

Everybody knows the Texans are gonna do what they always do at the
trade deadline...

you may need to start calling phillip by his name after watching him last night. i did'nt watch the whole game but he looked a lot better than any of our corners the plays i did watch and i did see him knock down two passes in a three play stretch.

I really dont think that they can afford to do that this season if their goal is to get in the playoffs .... They need help on the defensive side of the ball come hell or high water.

TBO this last OS i was thinking in the back of my mind should we give Demco a new deal .. or should we go with someone younger ????

Isnt he a Kubes guy right he was one of Kubes first draft picks or was he a capers guy ???? i forget

He was drafted under Kubiak.
2006 #1 pick was Mario
2006 #33 pick was Demeco

We also got Eric Winston, Owen Daniels and David Anderson from that draft.

The only team worse than the Redskins in pass defense is... you guessed it... the Texans.

Pburnt has been horrible all season. Their entire secondary has. They are just barely better than us at 298 yards per game.

Those 2 knocks downs were great, but they gave up 470 yards to the Colts yesterday

I completely EFFIN agree with this!

You can dominate a game when your front 4 are defense are really good, hello vikings anyone? You can dominate on offense when you have a great front 5.. Building a great team is about building your core product, and that's OL/DL..

If you are average everywhere else you'll more years than not make the playoffs and be a contender..

We don't play that kind of defense.

That was Richard Smith's old read and react where you want your DT's holding up O-linemen.

Now we play a style where we want our DT's to shoot gaps and penetrate.

That in itself is going to mean that the LB's will have to fight off more blocks.

I think the most important thing he brought to the team was leadership and steadiness. I think the team will miss that more than anything, but I hope that they step up to the plate.

I'm torn on how much we will miss him production wise. I don't think he was that good against the pass and I haven't seen many big plays from him defensively. He has made a lot of tackles, but I haven't seen anything special from him.

That may have something to do witht the defense as a whole. That said, I think we will be Ok at LB. I'm not overly worried about it.

That was the year we got Demps right? He did pretty good for us that year if I remember..... don't really know what happened to him.

But it's not that this coaching staff didn't give Babin a chance. They were "young & stupid" they wanted to put weight on everybody that came into camp. & it appeared they didn't care how they added weight, as long as they added weight. Babin was pudgy his last year here.

He looks great now...... more like a LB, but playing his true position at his true weight.

I doubt he can keep this up all season long. I'm pulling for him, but he's too small to be an every down DE. He needs to be a specialist, and used in passing situations. Not that he's bad against the run, there's just no way he can last as an every down DE.

There is only an 8 pound difference between Babin and Freeney.

Isn't Freeney always hurt?

I know Mario always has a nagging injury, but they don't keep him out of games.

How many games has Freeney missed?

I want us to see our LBs loose some weight and gain speed and quickness. DeMeco Ryans should go back to his rookie weight (235-lbs) along with Sharpton who weighs somewhere around 244-lbs.

If we can get our LBs to drop weight and become quicker, it might help them out in coverage duties. To supplement this, I suggest the Texans get a quality big man to clog up the lanes and take on blockers with a speedy DT next to him who can shoot the gaps.

Just my take...

That is definitely one option. Or...

or our offense can get a lead early in games. Our defense can stop the run. our offense can extend the lead. & our defense can pin their ears back & fly after the QB.

Either way would work..... but since we were built for the latter, I'd be happy if they can get it to work.

I don't think it's really going to matter when the LB's are having to take on guards and centers all the time because the DTs are bad at stopping the run.

Sounds good in theory .... But the Texans dont have a guy who can collapse the pocket in the middle which gives the QB an escape on nearly every pass play. The De's seem to get washed right on by on the backside of the play.

They have to clog the middle and stop allowing QB's to step up , that will make the edge rushers much more effective as well as help the secondary out.

LB's have to take on or avoid O-linemen.....

That's just the nature of football, not to mention we play a scheme where we don't want our DT's holding up O-linemen...We want them shooting gaps...

I really think that the team tries to mix too many concepts and doesn't really have one true identity at the moment...Might have something to do with personnel in the front 7 though...

They definitely struggle when they have to play honest. But when the pressure is on, & they know what the other team is trying to do, they're pretty good. The Skins couldn't run on us. We pretty much shut McNabb down in the third. We were able to get all over Manning (Peyton that is)..... & when we needed a stop, we got a stop or two in KC.

The defense needs to improve quite a bit in many areas. But when the offense does it's job, the defense will do theirs.

Rewatch the Dallas game.

We tried jamming at the line on both Williams and Bryant and they threw off our CBs.

Yes, that did happen. However we jammed each of them more than once. They weren't always tossed aside.

Good time to revisit this...

Texans were 4-2 when we lost DeMeco.

1) Can/should one player make the difference?

2) Why do we still have no depth (after so many drafts) to absorb this type of loss?

I'd at least be giving GM Smith his walking papers.

Our defense was awful with Demeco during our 4-2 "run."
