How screwed are we at LB now?

Losing Demeco we suddenly look really, really sketchy at LB.

IIRC, we have Bentley, Adibi, Sharpton, and Nixon for depth.

Pretend you're Bush, Kubes, and Smith - what do you do now??

I plug in Sharpton (assuming he can get healthy) and hope for the best.

You also have a couple of days to make a trade; we could use help on all 3 levels of the defense.

If you put in Sharpton, do you plug him in the Mike slot and let him make all the defensive calls?

I'm not sure I trust a rookie to do that. Or Diles.

Damn. Not a lot of great options here....

Adibi and Bentley are ahead of Sharpton and they should be.

Of course, it probably depends on who can get healthy the fastest, but I would not be surprised to see all three of them play if all of them are healthy.

Diles is probably your new mike unless Bentley gets healthy enough to play.

Yes. All preseason the chatter was that he was drafted as DeMeco's back-up. I don't think he's done anything to lose that spot.

According to the injury report:

Bentley ~ Knee, doubtful, did not practice Wednesday, Thursday & Friday

Adibi ~ Hamstring, doubtful, did not practice Thursday & Friday

Sharpton ~ Ankle, probable, full practices all week

Who's "fat" at LB in the NFL? No one I can think of. I don't know of anyone you can trade for.

Honestly, Cushing has always stolen tackles from Demeco. He's just quicker to the ball.

Losing Ryans will hurt us, but not in an extreme fashion. I honestly dont think we could get any worse.

DeMeco was the QB of the defense. Diles will shift over to Mike and do his best DeMeco impression but we're not replacing a pro bowler. Best case scenario Diles will do what he always does: Be a solid starter wherever the coaches put him.

It will be interesting to see who emerges as the starting Will over the rest of the season.

Didn't Pollard take turns calling plays at one point in the season?

I dont think Diles will automatically take over

It's not like we've been getting stellar LB play already. In fact's it's
been horrible. If they play mediocre, it will be an improvement.
The Colts are playing right now without THEIR MLB (Brackett) NOR
their starting Strong Safety (Sanders/Bullitt.) I don't see that defense
giving up 400yds/30points-a-week.

I don't give a **** about their excuses. They just don't execute
worth a damn.

Wht do we do now well stick another guy in there

But no one i think can replace Demco he was the QB of our D hopefully someone can step up

Or will it be Will-by-committee....

This sucks.

Weren't a bunch of people talking about trying to trade Slaton for AJ Hawk a few weeks ago? No idea how plausible that is, not very I assume, but still it's a thought.

It got much worse after Ryans left .... Diles wasnt good at all in the middle.

All the sudden they went from the worst pass defense in history to the worst pass defense and the worst tackling defense in history ..... they missed enough tackles in half to last an entire season.

I think it comes down to Beltley and Sharpton - Whoever gets healthy first.

The only resaon that Diles moved to the middle is that they only had 4 LB's active for the game and he was the best option available.

Nixon didnt do too bad .... made a few plays but there was a gaping hole left in the middle.

I think a lot of the Texans problems are scheme related .... and the fact that no one can cover a sleeping baby in the secondary. :rake:

I'd like to see what Sharpton is capable of. I say that because I hope that he hasn't been here long enough for Frank's stink to have rubbed off on him too much. You plug him in on the weak side, spend two weeks trying to get him ready and pray I think. I cringe at the thought of Bentley in the middle. Move Diles over and let his understudy get started.

If I were a wagerin' man, this is where I would put my money.

I'm still antsy about a rook making those calls, but screw it, it can't get much worse!

Im gonna go back and watch the game again but on first look , Diles didnt look good in the middle .

I don't think Diles played well in the middle either. Much rather leave him at Will and put Sharpton or Bentley and Mike.

This. Yesterday, I felt that poor tackling accounted for a majority of the problems on our defense. Over and over, people seemed to be in a position to make plays, but failed to do so. I really don't understand how this happened - why were our players so bad at such a fundamental task?

As someone else said, Demeco (or any other LB) was not doing a great job this season, so it's tempting to think that replacing him won't hurt us that much. But, I think he was probably still the best (or maybe 2nd best) player in the unit, so I expect we'll be seeing a significant dropoff.

The poor LB play has been probably the most shocking thing for me this season. On paper, I thought we had about the strongest group of LBs you could want (with 2 DROYs, someone that everyone agreed was a solid NFL starter in Diles, and what looked like great depth). I expected problems with our secondary, and was not excited about our DL, but I thought we were at least set at LB. However, they've looked at least as bad as the other two parts of the defense, so far.

I'm glad we've got the bye week to (hopefully) get some of this straightened out. I hope they use the week to improve, and not just to take a mid-season vacation.

First time to slide inside to mike since we drafted him pretty much. Probably felt out of place, but its where he played college ball at K-state. I'd think with more reps he'd look better.

What little good news comes out of this game is we've got a bye week at least to figure it out at LBer.

At least a little bit of credit has to be given to the guy's on the other side of the ball .... Jamaal Charles is a shifty guy and leads the NFL in yards per attempt at over 6.3 per coming into that game.

The Chiefs have been able to run it on everyone .... not just the Texans. That OL is good and getting better and their coach has some stones.

They kept the Texans defense off balance for pretty much the duration of the game , good gameplan and play calling even in a losing effort.

As I pointed out earlier , they got considerably worse after Diles moved inside .... Nixon wasnt bad in replacing Diles but he was just picked up off the scrap heap two weeks ago.

If not for a hell of a day from Cody , the Texans offense probably never gets a chance to win it.

The two biggest problems I think the LB's have had is in coverage and those mis-direction type plays , I expected that to get better with Cushing back on the field ....

Yeah , no way we could have expected this unit to perform down to this level which is a big part of why I believe that this defenses problems are at least partially the fault of the scheme and especially on the back end.

We'll see what happens and who's healthy at this point thats likely what it boils down to , who's healthy.

Before the season it looked like we had solid depth at LB .... Now 6 weeks in we look thin.

As for Diles moving inside , you may be right .... I just didnt think he played real well after moving inside.
Maybe they make a roster move , who's available as a FA ? What teams are over loaded at the position that they could make a deal with ?

Found this in another thread , just kinda shows what we already know but ....

Before Ryans was injured, we allowed:
20 rushes for 98 yards (4.9 yards per carry)

After Ryans was injured, we allowed:
18 rushes for 130 yards (7.2 yards per carry)
