Kubiak live monday press conference @ 3:30

I'm seeing it just fine. The phrase "Three-legged cat trying to cover up **** on a frozen pond" comes to mind in watching Gary today.

LMAO.....

Maybe its good for me that the stream is all interrupted.

Mine is wonky as well

I'll get 5-7 secs of audio, then I'll get frozen Kubiak. Then 5-7 secs of audio. More frozen Kubiak.

Just as disjointed as our gameplan.....

Kind of like our secondary...5-7 plays and then they all freeze up.

Yeah seriously 8 or 9 missed assignments on 13 plays? That's just pathetic. I can't believe we were messing it up that much.

Sloppy recap:

Talk about Giants ability to take away cut back lanes?

Wish we had more runs. 8 carries in first half. Didnt run ball alot in 2nd half. Never really could evaluate it. Got behind and started throwing. They stopped everything we did.

Is Bernard's shoulder an issue?

Not that I know of. Everyone is beat up. We gotta push through.

When you have a team that is up and down like you have, is that something you see ahead of time?

Good observation. Played some good and poor games in big spurts. We're trying to find consistency as a team. That is the key to being a great team. Hardest thing to find. we're searching. Long way to go.

When you were in Denver and in the playoffs every year, what were you doing then that you'd like to do now?

Yeah, I've had my tailed kicked before if you're asking that. That is so long ago. Being great is about consistency. We got big issues. Gotta fix it or we'll have some issues throughout. It wont hold up like it is now.

Many players mention you may have been lackadaisical.

I told them coming out of Dallas game, some of that edge coming home, maybe we werent quite the same with that edge. I challenged them the night before the game and obviously we didnt get that done.

This is a team trying to find an identity. Why abandon the run?

We abandoned it at 21-0. That was on me.

What are you gonna do to get a pass rush?

Tried a few diff. guys. Manning didnt go down at all. It's gonna be about the group. Gotta continue to search. Anderson will try this week. It's about the group. It's not good enough as a group.

Would you and Rick rule out a trade?

Lining up who I got.

You talked about lack of urgency, there have been days like this before, what have you seen?

I didnt say that. I said, that there is an edge sometimes when you go on the road, not having the home crowd, home city, you have an edge when on the road. I didnt see that edge against Dallas. I thought we played/started 100 mph yesterday then it blew up. Nothing wrong with the start of the game.

In the past you talk about the team getting pats on the back and not going forward with it ,where they respond with criticism, how do you get their backs to the wall?

About maturity. If you relax any week, you will get beat. If thats something we're battling, I didnt see guys relaxing, we didnt play good. Played poorly. That's a nice challenge to have. I dont think we're there. We gotta push every week.

When Matt has come under heavy attack, has he audibiled at the line?

We do some. Not a big Matt take over at the LOS. He checks off some plays and flip plays.

Matt doesnt seem sharp start to finish. What's Wrong and if not wrong, why?

He wasnt yesterday. Didnt have any help. We need to protect better, run better routes. A lot of people involved in that. We gotta win games when the QB throws only 180 yards. He cant throw for 300 or 400 a week. I dont know what we'll have to do this week to win. There cant be one way to be successful.

Going against a good Chiefs D.

I'm so into us right now. Havent looked yet.

You say you are behind?

Looking at my team today.

What do you look at when you look at yourself?

Looking at the O. Ran 13 plays. Down 21-0. Trying to see what I did in that game and what I asked them to do. I was concerned about the focus. I then have to go look. Very concerned about the 13 snaps.

Update on Jacoby, Arian?

Just a sore knee. Heading in right direction.

Andre?

He's fine. Obviously sore. No setbacks

Both losses to NFC east teams, balls deflected, only 1 tip in those games

Obviously they were good in our 3 step drop game. They got their hands up. As offense, we gotta cut them and get hands down. Didnt do good job yesterday.

How did Cushing do?

Glad he was out there. Active. Not perfect by any means. Good effort, played about 60 plays. He looked like himself. Snaps behind but looked fast.

Your D has been up against it. What changes are in store? Can you make a dramatic change?

No doubt in my mind we can. We have to believe in what we're doing. We're going with these young guys. A lot of improvement to do. I see flashes but no consistency. Trying to find the consistency and edge to do it right all the time.

Second guessing any vets leaving?

No, you gotta move on when you make those decisions. Part of the growth process but we need it to hurry up.

[Missed question but believe it was about McManis]
McManis played some nickel but got a hamstring issue.

Will have the GK show after it's over

I'm just angry...I wish Kubes would be too.

Yeah. I don't expect him to come out to the podium and be so pissed that there's profanity and spittle. So said, he just looked kinda lost on this one. Shell shocked, maybe? I think old boy is running out of ideas on how to get this thing flying right.

I like Gary. I just think he's maxed out and in over his head.

I listen to this presser probably 9/10 times...I gotta say,

:vomit:

at the 'reporters' questions. Barry Warner and John McClain ask horseshit questions every friggin week. "How Cushing was?" with zero follow up questions. Make him answer a hot question and put the pressure on Cushing through the media to produce, showing effort is nice but they're professionals. Effort being a question....well...it shouldn't be a question even though every week we sit around and question the team's effort.

Yeah, how about:

_ What is the thought for not playing Molden at CB? If he was good enough/ and healthy enough to make the team ahead of Jacques Reeves, wouldn't it be likely that he would play better ball than Jackson right now?

_ Or, Precisely what adjustments were made on defense at halftime?

_ Or, Eli Manning commented about how predictable the coverage would be and was elated to see the preparation workout so well... What does this defensive staff do to address issues of being too predictable and in attempting to disguise coverages or hide tendencies? Is that not possible, right now, because of the inexperience back there?

_Or, we know you don't like calling out players to fans, but to most fans, every play made to a WR is the fault of the closest CB... Bernard Pollard acknowledged one blown coverage on the second TD... How much of the problem with coverage, right now, are the safeties inability to cover deep in the Cover 2 defense?

_How is Brisiel's knee?

_ How much longer are you going to stick with Slaton at KR. He's been awful, regardless of the other 10 guys. He runs tenatively... I heard you were trying out Dexter Jackson today.. true? any others?

Mike will miss a couple weeks with a sprained MCL

"We'd like to get him(Molden) involved. He has missed time with injuries though. Hopefully he can stay in one piece."

Sloppy recap of Gary Kubiak show on SR610:

Joined by Coach Kubiak. Rich and Rob here, appreciate you joining us. Coach, obviously a game where nothing went right. Health of some guys? Brisiel?

Mike will miss a couple weeks. A sprained MCL. Hopefully we can get him back after the bye. Caldwell will be the starter. Studdard will get going again. Arian looks good. He ran with the team. McManis has a hamstring issue. Andre Johnson is fine. Sore but is ok. He wasnt 100% but made some plays.

Dickerson?

Got his knee banged. He and Jacoby will be day to day. Sharpton has broken bone in his hand and will play with it.

I'm sure you didnt see the game going the way it did but what happened?

I'll give them credit, they did it in all 3 phases but we sure helped them. Penalties hurt us all around. Struggled in the return game. Defensively, 3 and out and 18 play span where we gave up big yards and plays. It wasnt one phase or one group. It was everyone including coaches.

How discouraging is it?

We're disappointed. We put in the work and stunk. It was not a good day. I believe in my team. We have been inconsistent. It wont be any different this week. If we play like this week, we wont win next week. Got to fix our problems and try to get better.

Was the gameplan trying to establish the pass?

First 3 plays were designed to throw. It wasnt a good start. No balance. Never tested the running game. 8 or 9 runs in the first half. We didnt get anything established. No excuses.

What did Giants do to stop the running game?

It was moreso, we're down 21, we gotta make plays. I got aggressive with the play-calling. Its just the way the game went.

...

[Caller]: How much can you contribute Jackson's struggle to the D-line?

It's all tied together. Kareem not the only guy they're attacking. Other guys too. LBs have to do their jobs and job up front. WE're struggling against the pass and we'll get tested. Yesterday, 8 or 9 minutes left in game, Giants kept throwing it. We'll continue to get tested. No sacks yesterday, we gotta get better as a group.

Kareem is the focus, he is the rookie, 1st round pick, etc, but as you point out, he's not the only one. How is he holding up or what's his mindset?

He's a tough-minded young man. This league is different. A new challenge. Because he is young, people will go after him. In the end, it will make him better in my opinion.

There were moments Brice was in and Jackson out, this was just the rotation correct?

That was planned all along. We wanted to play Brice and McManis too.

[via question on HT.com] What does the team have to do to get consistent pass rush? What can be done in the secondary?

It's consistency. I can sit and pull 3 series that were good. I can pull bad stuff too. It's finding a way to play 4 quarters.

If there is a silver lining, you did have 4 takeaways in past couple games.

Yeah, but we gave it right back yesterday. Winning turnover battle usually means success.

[Caller]: How is Molden coming along? Will he see PT anytime soon?

We'd like to get him involved. He has missed time with injuries though. Hopefully he can stay in one piece.

How about Nolan?

He did ok. 'Gene played a bit more than him. He can tackle better. He did good stuff. Almost gave up a big play, discipline right there. He can get better. We'll give him some more chances.

Where does Osi U. rank?

He's pretty good. They're physical up front. Tuck on the other side. They did a heck of a job yesterday.

They got some hands on some of the balls. Risks when you go into 3 step drop?

Yes, but that is why we cut and things like that. We got to do a better job.

[Caller]: Have you decided to look at a veteran CB?

We're going with these young guys we have. We picked up Paymah. He is a vet. We believe in our young guys. We gotta get better as a team and help them out.

...

About the speech to the team, you made reference of trying to get same edge at Reliant as you do on the road. What is it about not having the same edge at home?

My intentions were not to say we didnt have edge. When your "up against it" on the road, I can see the focus in the guys eyes and how they do things. It cant be different at home. We have to have the same focus. It's very good on the road but have seen flashes of it not being where it needs at home. There has been a lack of focus. We need to check ourselves and make sure we're doing things the same.

Surprised the Giants were called for more penalties because it seemed like they came at inopportune times.

Yeah, came on ST. On D, all penalties were first down conversions. On O, they were big plays or on TDs. Other thing interesting, we had 5 plays over 50 yards. All those plays followed by penalty, sack, or something negative.

[Caller]: Matt was on talking about O not getting into rythym, can you explain why you didnt go into no huddle or 2 minute offense after INT in the 3rd?

Funny, we said we were going to uptempo offense at half. Everytime we made play, we shot ourselves in the foot.

Unable to execute?

Yeah, we wanted to keep rythym if we could.

[Caller]: Why do we give WRs so much cushion? And why no bootlegs or out routes?

I agree. We gave up a lot of hitch routes. We had guys in position but..we were playing 8 man box and they were willing to throw hitch and were successful. Boots and that go hand in hand with how well we run the ball. Obviously we didnt do that well enough.

...

How is Owen Daniels and the comeback?

That was the best he played. He was a bright spot. He looked like himself. That's the OD I know.

He and Kevin are most underrated players in blocking.

Our guys do a good job. We expect that out of them and they're willing to do it.

[Caller]: With Andre, didnt seem like he was 100%. Why were we asking him to run 40+ yds or more with his injury?

He was ok. I wouldnt put him out there if I didnt think he could do what we wanted. I thought he played well. Not 100% but good enough to help the team. He got through clean and he'll be better this week.

...

[Caller]: Physical teams, its a trend, they beat us up front. How do we overcome this?

To me, we are trying to get physical ourselves. Nothing particular you run but gotta get physical yourself. In this league, no telling what it will take to win in any given week. We got 11 games left, we gotta find a way to be in every game. We got out of it in Dallas and NY. As far as Schobel, he's retired. We gotta get the guys we have ready

See anything from Mark Anderson?

We'll look hard at him this week. He got some speed and PR ability. Trying to catch him up.

[Text message]: Are you looking at any FAs, considering you're banged up at WR and D-line?

We got some issues at WR and D-line. We're getting challenged depth wise. Gotta stay focused with the guys you got here though. Rick always working and looking but I work with these guys I got with me.

The Chiefs will be at Reliant. They suffered they're first loss. Early thoughts?

They done a great job. They're building through the draft. Got some playmakers. On D, they had some players for a few years now. Romeo is a good coach. Charlie leading the O. THey're sound. They held Indy to 19 which is tough. We gotta fix our stuff.

They're giving up 14 points a game.

They're big. Got edge protected. DOnt give up big plays.

Surprised no undefeated teams left?

A little surprised. At the same time, balance in this league, it's more and more equal. Any given week, anything can happen which is what I'm preaching to my players.

How did Cushing look?

Glad he was out there. He was active, looked sharp. Got some pressure. Got to get his body back going but he'll be ready.

Appreciate the time. Good luck this week.

Ok, have a good evening.

Thanks for both recaps HoustonSportsFan09. I repped you for your efforts, others should do the same. I wasn't able to listen, so seeing it recapped was very cool.....thanks.

No problem. I know some either can't listen or don't want to listen to Rich Lord or don't want hear the same ol' from Kubiak.

Does anybody ever learn anything from Kubiaks pressers ? I know I can't get anything out of them, but maybe that's the point ?

I'm just angry...I wish Kubes would be too.

i just don't understand this logic...just b/c a coach screams and is body slamming mics & angry all the time doesn't mean that the team will respond to it, nor does it mean that the coach doesn't care or isn't angry about the situation if he doesn't do that stuff. I mean Mike Singletary has been angry & beligerent (sp?) his entire tenure in SF...it hasn't translated.

This

It's comforting to know that Kubes and staff have no idea how to beat the Chiefs.

Does anybody ever learn anything from Kubiaks pressers ? I know I can't get anything out of them, but maybe that's the point ?

Heck, they could've just replayed one of his PC's from last season and we'd never know. Same crap, different game, but I reckon most coaches spew the same mumbo-jumbo after wins and losses.

Every time I try to post a reply to this thread, I look over what I've written and say to myself, "What a douchey thing to say." So...

I am frustrated the answers Kubiak gave, because I don't get a sense that he shares my frustration with the way this season has gone, especially this last game.

God, what a douche thing to say. :jk:

Clearly all the hugs, back rubs and cookies w/milk haven't worked here either. I never said anything about yelling & belligerent...I just want some emotion besides tail tucked between legs and aw shucks look. There has to be a balance. If you, your staff and entire roster lay a goose egg - show some damn emotion. I'm sick and tired of kumbaya, peace and love. This is football, not a girl scout meet.

You honestly think he's the same coaching on the practice field as he is at the podium for a press conference?

Maybe Kubiak's a good enough coach to get us to the playoffs and beyond, and maybe he's not - we'll find out eventually (whatever that means), but the one thing I don't want him to do is to put on some sort of an act and be someone who he isn't for the benefit of the fans. Players will see through that sort of thing in about five seconds.

It's the tail wagging the dog. I think it's kind of like needing surgery, and rather than selecting your surgeon based on experience, education, or patient referrals, going by what color scrubs you like best. He's great or he's not - purple paisley attire doesn't make him better or worse.

Here's the last 10 coaches to win Super Bowls:

Sean Peyton
Mike Tomlin
Tom Coughlin
Tony Dungee
Bill Cowher
Bill Belichek (3 times)
John Gruden
Brian Billick
Dick Vermeil
Mike Shanahan (2 times)

That's a pretty diverse group, and there's some screamers, some huggers, some cryers, some guys who wear their emotions on their sleeves, and some who are a emotionless as a stone. Plus, the way we perceive them as fans may or may not be remotely similar to the way their players perceive them. I'm guessing the average fans "assumption" of what it's like to play for Bill Belichek might be considerably different than the players who have actually done it.

Kubiak will eventually most likely end up fired by the Texans. Whether that ends up being in 11 more games, or 11 more years, I genuinely believe the best chance he has at succeeding is by being Gary Kubiak, not be being who some of us think he should be.

I honestly think I'm seeing the same look on his face as I saw for years on Capers face. Dumbfounded. Not knowing what to do next. Lost. Unable or unwilling to change. Thinking we can out cute teams. Unlike Capers, the talent is there. Plain and simple.

I've been a big supporter. I have yet to call for his head. I'm just saying I dunno anymore. I would love for him to win games and be here for the next 20 years. I will not stand by blindly like I did with Capers. I use to see things that bothered me but didn't say anything out of blind faith.

And perhaps you're right, maybe he's lost, maybe he doesn't know what to do, and maybe he is unwilling to change, but I'm not willing to write it off yet.

In your comparison to Capers, I think many if not most would agree that the Cleveland game at the end of the '04 season was the beginning of the end. We went from a chance at our first ever .500 season, to losing to a doormat, to having that hangover last the entire following season.

Kubiak got us to the .500 mark, and a little beyond. Last years Jets game could have been his Cleveland. For different reasons, last years MNF game against the Titans could have been his Cleveland. Well, whether we're where you think we should be or not, we're 3-2 and tied for first in spite of all the Eff-ups. Maybe the Giants game will end up being his Cleveland, but since I've seen a couple of instances where what could have been wasn't, I'll wait to see first hand.

And don't misunderstand me - I'm not saying that if we go 4-7 or 5-6 the rest of the season that we've dodged the bullet because we didn't completely implode like we did in '05. I'm saying that genuine improvement over the '09 season should be the expectation/demand of this coaching staff. I'm also saying it's still a realistic goal, and you haven't failed until you've failed. We've been in spots not completely unlike this before, and while some may dispute it, I believe we've steadily improved - even if it's been at a pace too slow for some. I want to continue to see improvement in a meaningful way, so if the stumbles are similar to what we've seen previously, the recoveries need to be better.

We've got 11 more games before the 2010 regular season is in the books. I may or may not need all of those to make a judgement, but I need more than the 5 I've got right now.

Every time I try to post a reply to this thread, I look over what I've written and say to myself, "What a douchey thing to say." So...

I am frustrated the answers Kubiak gave, because I don't get a sense that he shares my frustration with the way this season has gone, especially this last game.

We are 3-2 & leading the division, why should he be frustrated with the way this season is going?

Seriously.

Even if he is frustrated, why would you want him to show any more than he did(looked pretty frustrated to me)? I'd like to have some inside information myself, but this is a team sport & this is a young team. Its very important (IMO) to be unified. He has to publicly support what we are doing, and the guys we have doing it.

Kubiak seemed upbeat, happier than normal imo at this PC

Anyhow,

Plans at MLB?

Well..it will be a process. DeMeco is gone, we know that. Zac would be first guy if we played today. Biggest concern is the other 3 guys and their availability. If they are healthy, moving and mixing would be easy but they arent ready. Exploring everything. Me and Rick are talking, looking. More issues behind/than just DeMeco though

Obviously in the past, you talk about not having or wanting to move Zac, is Bentley an option?

Kevin and Darryl are an option but they arent on the field either.

Is the trade deadline an option?

Part of the conversation. Have to look at everything to make us better.

Are you and Rick anti-trading draft picks?

I cant speak for Rick. Both of us together do everything to make this team better. We explore everything. Health of the other guys is a concern.

Bringing in anyone?

We'll work some guys out. No list right now. Compiling all avenues.

What happens first, pass rush and secondary or hair on my head?

We need to get better across the board on D. Were some people who did good things. Cody and Wilson did good things but gotta get better as a group. We're in evaluation process right now. Trying to see if any changes can make us better.

How does a guy know that Vrabel coming into the game and leaves him open?

We busted coverage. Wasnt one guy.

You said, if everyone healthy, it would be easy.

Would be easy to move into a direction.

Would it be Bentley?

He's an option.

What kind of surgery did Bentley have?

Knee scoped.

How did Butler play and what to expect from Brown?

Played for a month. Helped himself as a pro. Can always do better. We didnt have to gameplan to help him. Proud of the job he did. Helped his career. Good to have Duane back. He'll go back to his spot.

Run D has gotten worse. Why?

We knew this would be the best team we faced running the ball. They can create formation problems. In disarray in 2nd half after losing DeMeco and what not. We got it handed to us. We gotta get better across the board.

Still happy with guys you have in secondary?

We continue to improve with guys outside in KJ/GQ. We're going with those guys. Not complete but going with them. Not chasing any vet guys. The guys we got gotta improve.

Does Ward remind you of anyone in Denver?

I dont know who but he is a nice addition. He has big plays and explosive runs. Very impressive. We need to play him more to keep Arian fresh

What happened to Cush?

Played hard. We didnt play well at LB position as a group. When we lost DeMeco, Zac was trying to run the D. Got in disarray. Cush became part of that, not having his buddy.

You given us material in time management, you bled the clock down yesterday.

I like to take credit for that but we were trying to score. Not giving them the ball back was a concern but it worked out.

Outscored 92-47 in 1st half, anything to fix slow starts?

No. Got down vs Giants, and Washington not better. No real answer. We just gotta start fast. It's a point of emphasis. We came out of lockerroom better in 2nd half but penalties hurt us. We'll try to improve.

When Matt under pressure, he throws the best. Is that accurate?

He gets into rythym. We protected good yesterday, which helped. They came after us in RZ. 8 incompletions I believe. Of 8, 5 times threw it away. Very accurate.

If one of your 3 LBs went down yesterday, what did you have in place?

Play nickel, play 2 LBs. I couldnt go out there.

Talk about Rackers tackling?

He was ST player of the game. 3 big tackles. He's willing to do that.

Does that amaze you?

No, just the way it is. I dont really like it but liked it yesterday.

He gets hurt, who is the kicker?

Good question. Probably Matt. I've seen Owen kick.

Was McManis ok?

Should be back the following week. This week, we'll need to try and get healthy. Big group of guys who wont see field this week.

Manning and Rivers after bye back to back, have you thought about that?

I have. We better get better in a hurry. It's gonna get tougher.

Did Anderson show you anything?

Only played 5-6 plays. 'Wale did ok but had a penalty. Earl played, tweaked his ankle.

Which LBs are expected back?

They keep telling me they're all expected back. We'll see.

We talk about all the problems, though you are 4-2/in 1st place. Think about that?

Thats a good thing. Real good thing. Was talking to Bob and ended saying how it was a good win. We gotta feel fortunate and get healthy. We'll get Duane back. Overcome the loss now of DeMeco.

Biggest disappointment so far the secondary/defense?

It's the inconsistency. Too many mistakes. Too much confusion on things we're doing. Now we got personnel issues. We got our guys and gotta make it work.

What do you feel best about?

Heart of the football team.

Across the board, D said it was missed tackles. Why?

That's the puzzling thing for us. We have the same guys besides Kareem. We regressed in some areas. We're addressing it. We watch and talked about it as a team. We gotta do it better. We all have to solve it.

What explains decision to stay put at CB?

Best guys to go with.

No problem.

His weekly show:

Gary Kubiak show

Rich and Rob here, hanging out, congrats on the V.

Thanks. Didnt look good but we hung in there.

A win is a win but funny, around town, there is not the same joy after a Texans win. Obviously, many cant feel good about losing DeMeco.

Anytime you lose DeMeco, that has a lot to do with it. Gotta find ways to fight through if you want to be a great team. Gotta get better quick too.

Plan to fill in at MLB?

Take it day by day. GOtta get this team healthy. This week will be spent trying to get guys healthy. Down on bodies. Our options include Bentley, Sharpton. Our options are nicked up too though.

We seen some significant trades happen. You mentioned at the PC, trades are possibilities. Are you optimistic about a deal?

My history would tell me least likely. We gotta look at everything though. Rick and his staff are looking hard at things. It always goes back to, you better have the option in house.

Matt not mobile but has that sense to realize the pressure.

Yeah, key to good ball movement was we protected Matt well.

Seemed like 1st game, that this was the old Owen Daniels. How did he do?

Yeah, had some speed. Legs bounced back faster than previously. He was a big factor yesterday.

Young guys on the backend have gotten their criticism, how did they do yesterday?

Our 2 starting corners improved yesterday I thought. Wasnt impressed with our LBs.

Your LBs, only had 3. Was fatigue a problem with the tackling?

We gotta tackle better, no excuses. Anytime you have doubt with what you're doing, you get slow and apprehensive and that's what I saw.

...

[Caller]: Congrats on well played game. QUestion is, looked like Frank Bush had D in position in first half but had poor tackling.

You're right. We need to tackle better. What do you do? You go practice but we're not in position right now. We gotta get guys healthy. We'll come back next week. We'll have to work on it though, simple as that. Gotta do a better job at it.

Where is Cushing? Where do you rank him?

Came close a few times on pressures. Brian was like a lot, he missed DeMeco. We're gonna have to move on from that though. Gotta get comfortable with whatever new guy.

With 3 LBs missing, who are you most optimistic about?

I couldnt tell you. Shooting for Monday for all 3 guys.

[Caller]: Why not blitzing more often?

We blitzed quite a bit yesterday. Brought Bernard and Cushing. They got rid of the ball though. Also ran the ball well. They did a good job and better than we did.

[Caller]: Would we give up a 1st for the Raiders CB?

Doubt you'll see anything like that happen. I dont think he's going anywhere. History tells me you gotta solve problems in house. Obviously we look around. We gotta work though with the guys we got.

5th best rush D in the league, Chiefs ran well. Is it Chiefs or your D?

We knew they were one of the best and we'd be tested. They also ran some different formations. We gotta tackle better too.

After the game, you said concerned all the way til final seconds about D, when you get 31-28, did you consider to onside kick?

No. We had our timeouts. We need to be able to step up.

Couple of ST questions.

Leach gonna be campaigning for Slatons job.

Hah

What were you thinking when they pooched it?

Give Leach credit. He did a great job. He's fearless.

What about Rackers on ST tackling?

Never named a K a ST player of the game for tackling but I did for Rackers. I worry about him. Other guys should be making those plays but that's who Rackers is.

[text message]: Are you giving Schaub more responibility regarding audibles?

As I've told you guys numerous times, We are not big on that and working on the LOS. As far as giving him more responsibility, you bet.

...

[Caller]: If the situation presents himself, the KC coach was leaving his O on the field, do you see yourself with short yardage going for it more?

I think it depends on the game, the situations. Each situation is individually. I cant tell you I'll do this this week and this that week. I'll make the best decision.

Do you have specific plays you keep in the bag of tricks or the same playbook for any other down?

I do map out 6-7 things for a situation. Sometimes you may have called it before in the game. Just all depends on how things work out.

On 4th down pass to OD, what constitutes a legal rub?

Andre running a slant, and Owen a flat. You cant run into someone and pick them off.

Isnt it understood, you want to recieve?

I'm gonna take the ball. That may be the 1 possession that could win you the game and the 1 possession they dont get.

[Caller]: Congrats on 4-2. Do you look at Merriman with DeMeco going down?

Everyone is looking at Shawn. He isnt healthy right now though. We do HW on everyone.

Seems like we gotta ask every week, is Schobel still out there?

I think that's done guys.

[Caller]: You talked about O and ST for struggling D, Slaton hasnt looked good on KR but Jacoby seems more promising. Would you consider making a change?

We were better yesterday. Steve was better, blocking was better. I think Steve is improving. Glad to have Jacoby back. Concerned about how much he would be able to do with calf but he got going.

Bunch of guys nicked up last week. Mario Williams - how healthy was he going into the game?

He is pretty beat up. Groin and shoulder problems but since I've been here, he has been there on Sundays even with injuries. I'll totally hold him out over the next few days.

Thoughts on David Nixon?

Tough spot. Hasnt been here long. This is pro football though, when you get those opportunities, gotta make the best of them. I know he would have liked to play better. Glad he was there and fought through.

...

[Caller]: Looked like Jackson made a few more plays this last game. Looks like he's reading and reacting instead of thinking so much.

Def. think he and Q improved. What I like about Kareem is he is getting tested and he is tough minded. Doesnt let things rattle him. Think he'll be great in the long haul. Need to continue to improve.

As road games come, this might be the toughest.

Yeah, it is. It can get loud. It will be a challenge. We'll have to play close to perfect.

Recipe for success, look at the opener right?

Yeah, gotta keep him off the field. Washington ran the ball well last night. Cant help them. You'll have to play close to perfect. We need to get ourselves in that position.

Ever touch base with Kyle Shanahan?

We visited after the Washington game. He's doing a good job with Donovan. They had their chances last night.

You'll see Colts twice before seeing any other division teams. Looking at any of the other teams?

We'll see some of the other teams. We'll look and see. ALso have to get a head start on San Diego.

[Caller]: Does losing DeMeco, who will be your leader on the D? Pollard or offensive side of the ball?

Great question. Me and McNair talked about that today. It will be interesting. Bernard a leader in his own way. mario too. Smith can lead this group too. Maybe Brian Cushing. Can he step up? We will be looking for that person.

Notice Molden got on the field at CB. How is he doing?

Doing fine. 3 weeks healthy, something he has struggled with. Played all ST. He needs to keep a positive attitude and his opportunities will come.

Congrats on the W again. Looking forward to the Colts game on MNF.

Have a great week.
