Texan tailgaters are the problem!

Ok, first I will say I did not hear all of the discussion this morning on 610 AM radio with Mark and John Lopez so correct me if you heard it and I got wrong impression. The topic seemed to be fans being in their seats @ Reliant before kick off rather than so many getting there late. The sports mouths were saying a lot of people party in the parking lot enjoying that experience and show up inside late to the game. Seems this really bums out the players. They had comments by Eric Winston also. Also mentioned were people who do not figure in the time it takes to get from car to the seat correctly.

So I think our losses over the years are directed at you guys more so than the players :fingergun: I am no longer as worried about our RBs, DTs, CBs or O line but on you party going folks not being there on time to support our team. You know who you are.

Houstonians are historically late arrivals. This isn't something new with the Texans. I think the only fans more notorious for arriving late than Houston fans are LA Laker fans.

My Dad and I had season tickets for the Oilers back when I was in high school and I don't remember there being that many empty seats come game time when Warren and the boys were rolling. Maybe I'm wrong, its been a few years.

There was no tailgating at the dome...

Even though it looks bad seeing so many empty seats at game time, I have developed more of a live and let live attitude. What annoys me personally is when some don't get enough of the tailgaiting experience outside and want to come in and bounce beach balls around while I'm engaged in watching the game. Then they have the nerve to boo if you don't want to play along.

Is this only in Houston ?

Is this more of a problem with teams that have not been real good ?

Is this an indication of folks who are more fans of a party than football ?

I don't know as my only experience has been here and Dallas. I had an interesting experience about two or maybe three years ago at Texas Stadium for the Thanksgiving Day game. I was about 40 or so minutes early getting to the gate, I didn't see many people. I walked up and asked for a program and the vendor said wait, I need to get some more. Ok, strange, but I had time. After getting the program, I walked to team merchandising area and looked at the merchandise. Then I went to the food stand and made purchases and headed for my seat. I walked into the seating area, and boy was I embarrassed. The place was packed and I had to pass by at least eight people to get to my seat. It was cold that day, so I thought perhaps that was a good reason. However, since then the stadiums have been at least 80 percent full at kickoff.

Last year I took a picture of the video screen midways through the 4th quarter showing attendance of over 92K people at the game against the Eagles. We were significantly ahead by then, and the stadium appeared to still have over 90K. I was so impressed I use the picture as my wall paper on my home computer.

Give fans a great time like the Moon-led Oilers and I have little doubt that the majority of them will be in their seats at kickoff. :winky:

I'm not justifying it, as I'm a kickoff-to-0:00 fan (I'm there for the game and tailgating is just a supplement), but many folks are enjoying the ReliantWorld GameDay Experience® and football is just an aspect of it.

Hey, stop pi**ing on my parade !!

We don't need words from someone who bailed on the Gridiron gang !! You are correct though !!

:pop:

As a fan , nothing is worse than the " get to your seat 20 minutes late guy " who decides he needs to get to his seat on 4th and 1 . Then 10 minutes later he realizes he's got to pee and get some nachos . This reeks of a casual fan who really isn't in to the game .

I didn't bail! I'm just broke. :ouch: Take him to the nearest bank!...

I still reside in Gridiron at least once a season, perhaps twice if I'm really lucky.

Just busting chops... I know you have priorities Amigo... Speaking of, how's that little girl of yours ??
Hope she's a handful !

Hey ... we could get together and share some beanie weanies and crackers and watch the game .

Straight from the can! Heat costs extra....unless you put the can on your manifold on the way over.

Oh, I know, bro'. :D

She's a doll, but crazy. Where my boys were shy and reserved, she wants to go head first down our stairs. I think she believes that gravity does not apply to her.

Absolutely! Winning changes everything! If you win, fans are in their seats. 8 & 8 is ok, 9-7 is decent, but if you post some 10-6 seasons or better, you will have fans there early! The Saints couldn't do it until the last couple years. This goes for most teams. Why would people show up early to see a 6-10 or 7-9 team? Of course, the die hards will be there. I am in my seat at least 10-15 minutes before kick-off! Since 2002!

Probems with empty seats, in no apparent order:

1. rich people who don't care
2. casual fans who don't care
3. mistiming how long it takes from the car to your seat
4. forgetting to allow for time to take your tailgate down
5. partying too hard and forgetting to care about kickoff
6. the team has never been to the playoffs

1. rich people who don't care Does not apply to me
2. casual fans who don't care See above
3. mistiming how long it takes from the car to your seat Some days seems to take longer than others
4. forgetting to allow for time to take your tailgate down Who takes it down
5. partying too hard and forgetting to care about kickoff Been there
6. the team has never been to the playoffs
That was then, this year will be different

I cannot fault those who stay out... I understand both sides... I just do my part and don't think twice about those who do not...

I lock up anything worth stealing. cover the food, slide everything under the tent and bring the tent down to the ground (in case of wind or rain while we are inside).

That can take a good 15 minutes....

That said - 1 hour prior we start getting into kickoff mode. We usually make it in to see the girls dance.

Amen Hobie! I didn't know people actually broke down their tailgates until after the game when they ask you to start leaving????

Well there is usually a few people who stay out at ours who do not have tickets, just come to watch the game and tailgate, so we are lucky that way with not having to break it down...as for seeing the ladies dance, I should probably make it a point to see that instead of the many drunk people out tailgating who attempt to do just that...and leaving 5-10 minutes earlier would spare me that view !!

I would think the players have more to worry about then people trying to slam the last beer and get inside. STFU and play.

And if I see any of that "We Are One" finger wagging I will boo yer ass.

Thanks

I'm always getting to my seat right when the kicker starts to run to kick off, is that too late?

THIS^^^^^^^^^^

The mistiming how long it takes happens mostly because the stadium design doesn't allow people to get to their level quickly because of backlogs at escalators and that the ramps take a long time.

I'd also add that there are tons of seats owned by ticket brokers. Ticket broker seat people are usually late for various reasons you mention.

A quicker start of the season would help too. How many years can you deal with the wind being knocked out of your sails at the beginning of the season? Last year was just dreadful going into the season after the Adrian Peterson first play run for the touchdown in the 3rd preseason game and then getting stomped by the Jets.

No it reeks of a self centered jerk who is only concerned about himself. You see him and his clones on the roadways daily.

While I agree with this bolded opinion, it is amusing to me that so many fans believe they actually play a role in their teams win- loss record, yet Winston says players want to see a full house crowd and those same fans are not there at tip off. When I watch a sporting event I want to see the players at their best, not during a rain storm or blizzard. It is football (or whatever) against the other guy. The wind at 40 mph (Candlestick Park) ain't the opponent. Crowd noise does nothing for me and like another thread said "be quiet on offense". So many folks think it is cool to get intoxicated, be obnoxious and yell profanities even if kids are present. Happens at my swimming pool every weekend.

I've always made it a point to get to the game early, since I missed that JJ kick-off return for a TD.

Don't want to miss anything like that again. I think it was preseason, but the same thing applies.

Maybe the problem is the tailgating needs to start earlier. Another things is because so many people are driving in late, the tailgaters get held up trying to get across the street.

If everyone would plan accordingly to be in your seats for the National Anthem, at least, it would be great. It isn't that hard, just start putting away 15 minutes earlier. The 30 minutes before the game starts is fun anyway. Our guys are warming up, they announce by groups when they come out. It's all part of the experience.

We head out of taligating at 11:00, inside the stadium at 11:15 or so, get a hot dog, and whatever to drink, and get to our seats by 11:30.

IT'S SIMPLE! LET'S DO IT!!!!! Every friend tell a friend, and let's do it! This could really be our year and it can only help! We could get a rep for the best fans too!

One of my biggest pet peeves ever. We're there early, we pack up and head in early (early enought) and we get hosed by all those late arrivals??? BS!!!

All I know is that I've been getting bombarded via internet, TV, email, text messaging, flyers, mailings, well... You get the point. I've gotten the Texans's mesage to come LOUD and EARLY. Now I just got the latest issue of the Houston Texans Bulletin. It's telling me about this awesome 170 dB horn/siren that was installed onto the roof of Reliant stadium. I mean c'mon now... What other stadium has that?!?! Time for us as fans to step it up and get the bleep into the stadium.

The thing is, most people on this board, that have tickets, are not generally the late ones!! You see the posts, we're all basically in agreement about being in your seat (or for the Bull Pen, standing in our spots) before kick-off.

I'm always standing at my seat well before kickoff.

It's up to the individual going to the game if they want to be there at kickoff. If you paid for their ticket then you could tell them when to be in their seats.

If the Texans gave more prizes for early arrivals maybe more fans would show up early. Like 20 free Texans bucks, say around 5000 of them for fans.

I think it just depends on what an individual enjoys the most.

Tailgaters.....giving up a good thing
SUITS..........sleeping in on Sunday morning
Sat night drunks..... same as SUITS
boneheads.......those who think they can leave their house at 1100 and still
make the kickoff
Texans management.........got a party going in Budweiser plaza! SHUT IT
DOWN EARLY and get those folks inside the stadium and out
of the friggin way! Ticket lines won't be near as long.
STOP that insane "body" search which prevents NOTHING!!!
YES, the Texans have to accept part of the responsibility for
fans not getting to their seats on time.

As for me, I enjoy the prelims! Hearing the National Anthem is as much a part of my football experience as tailgating. Seeing our guys run through the BULL and participating in calling out their names, just gets my blood pumping stronger and gets me ready for that kickoff.

I pay a lot of money for my ticket so I don't wanna miss a thing!!! BUT, that's just me!:)

Instead of putting that horn on Reliant, I think they should have gone by and asked all the tailgaters why they are late.

For instance, when they are coming in late, have someone by the door or escalator randomly asking the stragglers why they are late.

If they said they lost track of time, I can see putting a horn on the roof.

Other than that, it's obvious they had something outside that held their interest better than whatever might have been happening inside. The Texans should work on that inside part. Like $1 beer from 11:45 am to kickoff, in the stands only.

Ha ha! thats a good one! Oh, you were serious?

My Dad always said if you missed the opening kick-off, you might as well not watch the game. He believed in being in his seat well before kick-off (at the game or on TV)...

I've had the same mentality since I was 8 years old...
