Book 'em Dan O takes a pay cut

With the signing of Leinart this had to be a take the pay cut or get released situation for Dan-O, sucks to be him.

I find it hard to believe that Kubiak could cut Orlovsky at this point in time.

I guess he could have resigned JDB, because Leinart could not possibly be ready yet.

I guess Kubiak has higher expectations from Leinart than most of us do.

High draft pick on a qb next year?

I look at it more as motivation.

If he practices at a high level he retains his exact same salary. He doesn't take a pay cut unless he's demoted.

Honestly, when I first heard about this contract restructuring, the first thought that popped into my head was: "Someone within this organization is a f-----g genius."

They have both players by the gonads. They get both salaries to about an equal level, prompting a more level competition. And, even if one of them does not work out, but both show some improvement, they have both salaries low enough to make them decent trade bait down the line.

B-r-i-l-l-i-a-n-t.

This is some hardcore, championship team kind of business shrewdness. And, they don't have to worry about getting reputation for being cheap, because the Texans have shown very clearly that they take care of their performers.

Sure, we need several more wins because that's all that counts, but, behind the scenes, this team knows exactly what they are doing.

Yup. The only thing that pisses me off more than a dude getting $25,000 for standing on the sidelines, and perhaps helping out on a FG holding, is a dude who gets $25,000 and doesn't give a sh*t for standing on the sidelines.

Make em earn it - money helps people to better themselves...lets see who wants it more.

It's Rick Smith. I think that every year he becomes a smarter GM. I already liked his drafts, but I realized that we had the right guy after the way he handled Dunta.

That means Orlovsky has to win the competition with Lienart hands down, or Lienart gets the nod. If they are about even, it only makes sense to promote Lienart and save $1.25 million dollars.
 
I've been rooting for Dan O since he got here. And all through preseason I thought he was finally owning up to Kubiak's praise. And then on that first drive against TB, I looked at a buddy and smiled and said, "he's finally playing like a legit #2 to Schaub". And then the very next play - PICK SIX! $%*&

I'm happy to see Leinart come in here, but am skeptical about a one-year deal. I wish they'd have signed him to a 2-year deal so we'd have him locked up for next season or as trade bait.

There are no trophies for business shrewdness. How does this contract re-negotiation make the Texans a better team on the field? Unless you're Dan-O or his agent, this is meaningless.

Last year was supposed to end up that way. How did that work? We didn't even end up comfortable with one backup. And we certainly didn't end up with any trade bait.

I can see the appearance of a "financial genius" (RS), but I'm failing to see the "genius" in having no second year option on Leinart. Without it, "trade bait" does not apply.

That's the way things were to end up this year. How did that work out? We didn't end up even comfortable with one backup. And we certainly didn't end up with any trade bait.
 
Maybe the Texans are just a big-hearted team, who's willing to
let Matt Leinart play apprentice to Gary Kubiak. Perhaps the
expectation is that Leinart will re-sign in an act of gratitude.

I think the trade bait applies to having an option to trade him this league year; and if there is still no CBA in 2011 I think Leinart turns into a RFA (don't quote me on this 1 though)...

I'm pretty sure he would be a restricted free agent if there is no CBA and no lockout. Just like Pollard was for us this year. I think teams gain the extra 2 years before a player is unrestricted.
