It is really irritating all the posers we have here in our town. Guys like HoustonFrog that actually lived in Dallas and grew up Cowboys fans get a pass. My own mother is actually a similar case. She grew up in Dallas, loved Dallas especially the Tom Landry days, and never wanted to move. Then she met my dad, and he takes a job in Houston and brings her down here.
The ones that irritate me are guys like one of my really good friends. This guy is always bouncing around from team to team based on what team is hot. He has consistently been a Cowboys fan, but only because he wanted to root for a winner in the 90s. His dad was an Oilers fan, he was born and raised in Houston, yet has no love for Houston sports. His teams: Cleveland Indians (wanna take a guess when he jumped on that bandwagon), Boston Red Sox (another easy guess), and the Dallas Cowboys.
I find fans like this to be the most pathetic kind.

I'm just glad the Texans and Cowboys both look good this year (with problems at RB and OL respectively). That would be a great Super Bowl for me.

I can see this...there are always people that are Cowboy, Yankee, Celtics/Lakers and Bruin fans out there. Have met some. But I know many that just grew up with their teams. Nothing personal against the poster I just thought the premise here was kind of ignorant.

Honey I had season tickets when they went 1-15. I'm no bandwagon fan. I saw both those guys and I have cringed thru a ton of really pitiful Cowboys football. And if they don't fix their OL they'll be some cringe worthy games this year as well.
I was just posting last week or whenever that I had season tickets when the strike happened last and I actually went to those games! ARGH! And paid to go! Double ARGH!

My dad grew up a Cowboys fan living in Beaumont. Loved them all the way from the Landry days through the 90's. Something just changed along the way and we've been Texans PSL owners since day one and have never considered changing loyalties. People can change for good.
As for me, by the time i had started getting into football, the Oilers were on their way out, so I did watch the Cowboys for a few years, but never had true loyalties until the Texans came along. I was 5 when the Oilers left so i never really had a chance.

Having said all that I wouldn't give you any real crap about it. Just the occasional whoopie cushion. The only time I get "serious" with a Cowboy fan from Houston is when they feel obligated to trash Houston teams (kind of like you just did) everytime the subject comes up.

I'm simply not motivated to explain my reasons for being a Cowboys fan. It is what it is, and I'm 100 percent sure that won't be changing. Hopefully, the positive relationships with people will not be determined by my choice of a team. If it does, I guess it's good information to have.

Honestly, it's the idiots that post constantly at the chron as Cowboy fans and the morons who call into talk radio that give Cowboy fans a bad name. I have met maybe two people who are like that in real life, but once you get the relative anonymity of a keyboard or a telephone, people turn into raving *********s. But you do have to admit, since the Cowboys probably have the biggest national fanbase in the NFL that they also have the biggest amount of goobers as well.

Yes it is a game, but part of the fun of the game is competition. Not only competition ON the field, but competition with opposing fans. I don't have a problem with people picking a team they want to root for. My personal take is it takes a real weenie to simply pick a team though because of how good they are, especially when that team is not your hometown, or the team closest to your hometown. It just seems dumb to me, but I certainly am not going to end relationships over something like that.
I guess the real issue is when a douche bag Cowboy fan that has NEVER lived in Dallas or near Dallas rubs it in your face about how bad the Texans suck and how good the Cowboys are that rubs me the wrong way. Sure as a kid, it would have been easier for me to root for the Cowboys than the Oilers. Now, it would likely be easier for me to root for the Cowboys than the Texans. But as a fan, I think taking the easy way is the weenie way.

I moved to Houston in '84 after spending the first 23+ years of my life living in the KC area, or within 100 miles of it. Some of my first NFL memories are those of the Len Dawson led Chiefs winning Super Bowl IV, and to this day, I feel a welling up of emotion when watching any NFL films show about that team. Even in the days of a less hyped up Super Bowl, and even as someone who hadn't hit double-digits in age yet, KC was a pretty awesome place to be both leading up to, and in the aftermath of that win.
Many folks on this board know the excitement of the two Rockets Championship seasons. I remember going with co-workers to a temporary store set up in the downtown Hyatt to buy Western Conference Championship memorabilia prior to the start of the series with the Knicks. It was a feeling that wasn't at all limited to sports fans. Almost everybody in the city was drawn together by those two Championship Runs. There was a common goal that you knew probably 90% of the people walking down the sidewalk with you, or sitting in rush hour traffic with you shared.
Probably needless to say, I also grew up as a Royals fan. I'd watched the Royals lose to the Phillies when I was in college (probably a big part of the reason that I and virtually all of my childhood/college friends hate Pete Rose). Within 15 months of me moving here, the Royals had won their first (and only) World Series title. Yes, I was ecstatic, and yes, I have incredibly fond memories of George Brett, and lots and lots of Royals of that era, but the fact was, when I went into work the first day after they'd won the series, I was a party of one when it came to basking in that afterglow, and it just simply wasn't the same.
And that may be the simplest reason I can give you as to why (in addition to continuing a love for the Chiefs and Royals), I was easily able to get on board with the Oilers, Astros, Rockets, and now Texans.
I don't care how many Cowboys fans there are in the Houston area, I don't care how large your group of Steelers or Packers fans is that you get together with to watch your team play. I don't care how many Cub, Cardinal or Braves fans show up at MM Park when those teams are in town. You can never experience the full thrill, and the overall impact of your team being the absolute best unless you're there to see it happen with hundreds of thousands or millions of people who make it everything it can be as opposed to just "that time my team won it all".

If you grew up, lived a long time in, or currently live in the city of "your team" then in my mind it's okay to support your team how you want, either blindly or as an informed fan. Talk trash....that's fine too. I can understand just pulling for the home team. Basically you get a pass in my book.
If you live in Houston and your a Bears fan or whatever, that's cool too, just know a little bit about what you are talking about. Be an informed fan. Or why else are you supporting this team? What's the point, because their logo is cool? I just don't get it.
It's the ones that walk around and run their mouth but don't know **** about the team, they are not from the city, just a bandwagoner that doesn't know what they are talking about. I run into Cowboy fans like this all the time, I know more about their team then they do. Just ask them to name 5 players other than Romo, Witten, and Ware. Or name 3 linemen, and they can't do it. That's what annoys the hell out of me.

I just started following football more seriously in 2000-2001. I could stand the local team (Bills) for alot of reasons. Heard hou was getting a team and figured if i was gonna start watching football and following it closely i should follow a team from the start.
Not to continue a stereotype but i heard texans kno football and tailgating (proven true by the MNF tailgate party i went to vs the titans) so y not root for a new team and see them build from nothing.
Fans can b from anywhere. Bandwagon fans r completed different than a out of town fan

My hatred of the Pittsburgh Steelers caused me to become a Cowboy fan. That hatred caused me to root for the 'Boys in SB X. That hatred grew and grew as the Oilers would get punked in AFC Championships and they played the Cowboys again in the Super Bowl where I was rooting for them even harder.
Houston was always first (until a certain January afternoon in the early 90's), and is again now, but the Cowboys have been right there since my youth. Not a fan of Jerry Jones though.
So, I am a native Houstonian - born, raised and still here, and I am a Cowboy fan, and I am real. But on September 26th I will be rooting for the Texans.

Said it before I'll say it again, my sports allegiance goes this way: Houston, Texas, United States, Earth, and whatever galaxy we're in. When the Oilers left all I had to follow was Dallas and it's really dumb to consider the Cowboys a rival. Dallas is my NFC team. Also, so many threads dedicated to the Cowboys really looks pathetic. The Cowboys were never even an Oilers rival so WTF is the problem here? Get off of the Cowboys jocks and worry about a real rival like say the Colts or tacks.

Yeah, I totally agree. I can't stand coming across those. I think band wagon Lakers fans bother me the most out of anyone though.
I do root for certain teams where some of my players play for, but my allegience always goes to Houston teams first and foremost from the cradle to grave.

But now the Texans are a different story. Been a fan since day one and will continue to be. Will root for the Texans over anyone including the Pats.
Since Jerry had gotten hold of the cowboys - cannot find it in myself to root for them to beat anyone - unless it is a team that needs to lose for the Texans to make the playoffs.

Don't get me wrong, but what is wrong with someone choosing to follow the best team. I understand if they keep hopping from one team to the next, but if the objective is to find a team you like, what's wrong with choosing the best team of your childhood?
My favorite car of all time is the '78 Z28. It was the hottest thing I ever saw when I was a kid, I was lucky enough to own four of them in my lifetime, maybe I'll be lucky enough to own one again in the future. I know some people think it's the biggest dog ever made, but it's the car of my youth.
I know a guy who didn't get into football until the Patriots were winning Super Bowls. Naturally his favorite team has been the Patriots for several years. Tom Brady is his favorite player. I'm sure he'll be a Patriot fan at least as long as Brady is there. When Brady is gone, he may very well remain a Patriot fan, who knows?
But people pick there favorite teams for different reasons who cares why, as long as they can take some shitTalk'n from time to time.
