If I'm the HC, and I'm not satisfied with the development of my primary back-up QB, I will make sure he takes a major amount of snaps in our first preseason game.

So, this is a theory that I have.

If Kubiak is satisfied with DanO, he'll see two, maybe three series this Saturday. If Kubiak is not happy with our primary back-up, he'll play 4 or more series.

What do you think?

I would expect to see Schaub for one or two series, Dan-O for at least a half, and Booty for whatever is left.

I expect Dan -O will play at least half the game in any case.

In '08 (Sage's final year as a Texan), Schaub played 1 possession in the first preseason game, Sage came in and played the rest of the 1st half, and the first series of the 2nd half (or about a half) and then Boyd came in .

Last year, Schaub played two series (which took the entire 1st quarter), then Orlovsky came in and played the 2nd and 3rd quarters (or about a half) before Grossman came in.

Two different backup situations, pretty much the same amount of time given to each #2 (at the time) QB. I'm thinking Orlovsky gets about a half this Saturday.

OK... how do you remember this stuff?

So that pretty much kills my theory. We'll probably see about a half of DanO regardless.

You won't see Booty until the 4th quarter. DanO needs all the reps he can get. I just don't see Orlovsky, being paid all the money he is and has a year of training under him being 3rd fiddle again. IMO you will see a whole lot of Orlovsky this pre-season.

I better see some Booty before the 4th quarter, damnit!!! :kingkong:

Ah, Football!
I think DanO needs to spend three quarters out there.
The inconsistency he's shown thus far in camp, he needs to play the rest of the game after Schaub. I understand that won't happen, but good grief, he's pissed me off every practice I've been to. I hope he can get his mind right and just play ball, but it hasn't been a very promising camp for him.

Didn't we keep 3 QB's last yr?

Maybe we do the same thing again this yr...I hope we wouldn't have to, but who knows...

I haven't heard Kubiak comment on how many he'd like to keep this year

IMO, Orlsovsky need ever snap he can get. Bring Schaub in for a quarter last pre-season and he should be good to go. Last season had to really boost Matt's confidence.

From "Camp notebook: Day 11 morning practice"

Kubiak followed up on his comments about Dan Orlovsky from Monday by saying that the backup quarterback will play “at least two quarters” against the Cardinals. "Protect the football,” Kubiak said of what he most wants to see out of Orlovsky. “When he’s throwing it, protect it. Protect the team by protecting the ball. We’ve got to get rid of that one bad play out of 10, so that’s what we’re trying to focus on.”

Seeing Rex Grossman today makes me feel like we kept the wrong back up. Dude looked very comfortable in the offense.

We should of never gotten rid of Grossman, not sure if we shoved him out the door or he wanted to go somewhere else to play.

He was only on a one-year deal.

With that said, right now, I'm wishing we had him instead of Orlovsky. He looked good in that offense last night.

I would think Dan O needs as much time in live action as he can get either way.
I'm with you. Unless there's actually a chance that JDB (who I think is just a "T/C arm") can wrest the backup job from Dan O, then Dan O gets as many snaps as possible.

HOU-TEX

Ah, Football!
After a rough start, I thought DanO was decent the other night. He put together some nice drives.

He did have 2 screens that were beautifully set up that he missed on. Slaton and Henry could still be running if they would've gotten the ball. I need to re-watch the game to see who might be at fault, but the one to Slaton was kinda a limp-wristed throw by Dan.

He started seven games in 2008, when the Lions became the first team in NFL history to go 0-16. Orlovsky finished that season with a 72.6 rating, fourth-lowest in the league, and struggled to keep his confidence.

"You're human, so of course there are periods of frustration," Orlovsky said. "Doubt creeps in your mind, thoughts that you never thought would've been part of your process are there. You just have to continue to believe in yourself and work."

Orlovsky felt renewed when he signed with the Texans as a free agent in 2009. He was the third quarterback behind Matt Schaub and Rex Grossman and was inactive for all 16 games.

But Orlovsky admitted that he needed to sit out, learn the offence and refine his skills.

"Last year, I had to get broken down," Orlovsky said. "I had developed bad habits, mentally and physically. It wasn't fun last year, but it's one of those things that, when I look back on it, I'm happy I went through it."

Schaub led the league with 4,770 passing yards in 2009 and Houston finished with the NFL's No. 1 passing offence (291 yards per game). Orlovsky said he learned "countless things" from watching Schaub run the system.

"It was a whole scope of things," Orlovsky said. "Really, it was just seeing how to run this position the way it's supposed to be run at this level. It's been beneficial."

Kubiak said last week that Orlovsky is much improved from last season, but needs to cut down on bad decisions. He called Orlovsky's performance against Arizona "steady" and was happy Orlovsky didn't commit a turnover.

Orlovsky said he botched some simple throws against the Cardinals, an area to improve against New Orleans.

"I just missed some easy plays," he said. "I missed some plays that I can make in my sleep, 99 or 100 times out of 100. I need to make the routine play consistently, and really continuing to protect the ball, that's the really big focus of mine. I'm just focusing on executing on every single play."

Orlovsky said that his overriding goal in the pre-season may be simply earning the confidence of his teammates.

"I've gained such an appreciation for the guys on this team, that I want to go out and perform, so they know that if something happens to Matt, that we won't miss a blink," he said.

Star receiver Andre Johnson said Orlovsky is winning over the Texans and seems much more at ease at training camp this year.

"You could tell that he was thinking a lot when he first got here," Johnson said. "Now, you can tell he's feeling comfortable with the offence. It showed when he went out and played this last Saturday. Hopefully, this week, it's another test for him and he can go out and keep improving."

Expensive for a "tear down." But maybe value of the "rebuild" will make up for the cost. No turnovers is a good start. We'll know much more in the next 2 games. I'm pulling for the guy to make some of us who are insecure about the "no Schaub scenario" feel a little more confident that total catastrophe is not lurking around the corner.

We could be much worse off............We could have the Colt's backup who was booed off the field after being intercepted 3 times in addition to fumbling the brick.

That guy ran around the backfield like a frightened deer last season when Caldwell pulled out Manning in the game against the Jets. I don't think the pro game is his cup of tea.
