Owen Daniels signs tender

It's not the long-term deal he wanted but it's not bad. Texans TE Owen Daniels signed his $3.168 million tender today.

That means he's obligated to show up for TC. Here's hoping he lights it up this year and gets the contract he wants.

He's "obligated", and he almost definitely will, but last year, he signed his tender on June 15, then a week or two later skipped a couple of days of mandatory mini-camp (not TC) before reporting. Just sending a message.

Things are a little different this year with the rehab from injury, so I would imagine the chances of him not reporting to mini camp are very small, and the chances of not reporting to TC are even smaller.

To make room for Daniels and Sharpton, the Texans waived 2 rookie UDFAs in S Aaron Webster and WR Trey Stross (injured)

I think Daniels is going to be fine. He's a good guy and a team player. He's not one of those jack asses that runs his mouth through the media that wants to brag to his peers about his fat contract. He'll play well for us this season and I think he'll have a good attitude.

i hope he does well then moves on to a mega deal with another. we cant afford him with andre wanting to be paid as well. class act and a great TE

Yeah, we can afford him. He will get a new deal, just as Ryans got a new deal. He just has to show us this year he is healthy again. And hop the Graham doesn't have too big a year. Andre's contract will have no bearing on us re-signing Daniels.

how much money do you think we can tie up in our recieving corps when AJ probably wants to be highest paid wr and OD still looking for his payday? dont forget about mario and pollard etc

I posed this elswhere:
All I've heard about Jacoby Jones thus far is good things and how good he looks, etc(for what that's worth thus far). Sounds like big things could be on the horizon with him. Assuming he has a big year, and a new CBA is reached(meaning 4 year players would be UFAs again), do you think the Texans will sign him to an extension? This is not to say they wont, or they dont want him, or that they're cheap, nothing like that, though they did just give Kevin a 5 year 21.5 mil deal this offseason. Obviously Andre still wants a new deal or an upgrade rather, and OD too, assuming he regains form. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Obviously I'm getting way ahead of myself and putting the cart ahead of the horse but...

They may have to dish out money to their top 4 recievers(AJ, Walter got paid, Jones, and OD) - do you think they will? Then 2 guys off the top of my head on defense that might/are looking to get paid is Mario and Pollard(assuming Pollard has another good year). Again, this is not to say they wont, or they dont want any of these players, or that they're cheap, nothing like that.

Never was that high on Stross, but thought Webster had a 50/50 shot of making it to Training Camp due to his position. Not really surprised, as he is a strong safety, a position the Texans are decent at.

My top 5 UDFAs still have a shot!

Nick Folk one of them?

Yeah, in another thread I tried to get a game going about UDFAs. Pick your top five, and you get points for how may make the final roster and practice squad. Only a couple other people joined though, so I think its dead.

I had

1) Indiana FS Nick Polk
2) Temple TE/OT Steve Maneri
3) Northwestern State ST/FB/LB Isaiah Greenhouse
4) Colorado State OT Cole Pemberton
5) Wyoming DE/DT Mitch Unrein

I really think at least 2 of these guys make it on the practice squad.

Under the circumstances, it may have been short-sighted for OD not to have accepted the top five offered him (supposedly $15 million guaranteed).........but, certainlly money-wise as it turns out, the Texans can actually consider themselve quite fortunate that he didn't.

Are your tickets paid up? Mine are. I also bought three hats, a Steel Blue JJ jersey for me, a battle red Demeco for my 13 year old, a set of chairs, and a couple of Texans trailer hitch covers...

I think we can afford the both of them.

The biggest issue, is whether Kubiak/Smith truly believe OD is special, or a product of the system.

For the record, I think he's special... but you never know with Smithiak and the abundance of Tight-Ends we've acquired.

Owen Daniels sucks!!!!!! :jk:

This subject has been idle for about an hour now and I just wanted to get it moving again.

The Texans handled this okay. He blew a knee. This is his third blown knee IIRC. Why wouldn't the Texans FO be cautious???

Absolutely they should be cautious. And as I posted somewhere (:drunk:),
if he shows he is healthy he will get a nice contract. If he loses a couple of steps and Graham and Casey show well, look for OD to be in Balt. next year.

YUP!!! Unfortunately some folks get married to the players and not necessarily what's right for the team.

Except in this case, they were in negotiations, and should have came to a deal last year, after he made the pro-bowl.

No! Sorry, but the indivual player, no matter how much I love em, don't mean ****. My team is the Houston Texans. Irregardless of who is on the roster. And the more people who feel this way, the beter off our team will be.

What are you saying "no" to? I think we're in the same thought here, no?

The name on the front of the jersey first, not the name on the back.

Yes, he made the Pro-Bowl, but really that doesn't mean squat nowadays. VY made the Pro-Bowl.

*Not trying to argue with you here TK, just saying that a Pro-Bowl selection doesn't quite hold the weight it use to.*

I think we should be able to determine if it was earned on Merit, or because the guys in front of you decided not to go to Hawaii (on someone else's nickel even).

Still, the better point would have been, that OD was offered good money. He turned it down.

You know me, I was just arguing to argue.

Yep, we're in the same thought. I was agreeing with you.

The Texans have already demonstrated they have the money, willingness and desire to make him a top paid TE in the league. If there is a failure to agree ultimately it will be because he wants to be the top paid TE in the league and they will be haggling over $6.5 v. $7.5 mil per year. That's not can't do or philosophically won't spend that much on the receiving corp, it's an individual assessment of the player.

If the players are interchangeable, then then coaches should be as well. No need for continuity. Production is all that should count. Right?

If the current coaching staff leaves, then they are no longer my concern. But, I did not say or imply that continuity is unimportant. Did you get that from my post?
