Jags to cut John Henderson

JDizzle

I'm a dude
Per Adam Schefter :

After using their top two picks on defensive tackles, the Jacksonville Jaguars are saying goodbye to the best one the franchise has known.

Jacksonville will release former Pro Bowl defensive tackle John Henderson on Monday, according to a source close to the situation.

Henderson had two years and $11 million remaining on his contract, and Jacksonville felt more comfortable not paying it and relying on its rookies.

With the 10th overall pick, the Jaguars selected California defensive tackle Tyson Alualu and with their second pick, Jacksonville took Louisiana Tech defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith in the third round.

Henderson will be free to sign with any team.

Before the weekend, the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants had expressed some interest.

Link.

I would have no problem adding him to the team. I also love using players against their former team in-division.

just ask the Packers how well it worked out for them with Favre. Favre punked them hard. Yeah, Rodgers is good and borderline great QB, but hell hath no fury like a player scorned.

I had dreamed of Haynesworth flattening VY and rubbing it in Bud's face, but I'll take Henderson and hope he can do the same but without the draft pick cost.

Please sign one of the guys that has made it difficult for this franchise to get off the ground for once.

Henderson is from Tennessee. Expect the Titans to take a look at him (or at least his agent says so).

I think there are a number of teams which would be attracted to Henderson

The Saints, I'd assume, being one.

Would love to have the guy in black and gold, too

Have to make a good push to get him to Houston.

Although he is from Tennesee, Gregg Williams his old DC is in NO, the odds aren't really in our favor.

Please give him a look. Guy would be a big body on the line.

However, with their current "philosophy" I doubt he gets a call. Going to be upset if he ends up landing in Tenn.

Worked really great the first year with the Jets eh?

Personally I loved nothing more in this season that to see Brett get close enough to throw it away in classic fashion. Loved it even more that Brett had to stand on the sidelines while Drew Brees engineered a drive to get them in field goal range all the while you see on Brett's face he knew it was his fault.

Yeah must suck for Green Bay to have a young Pro Bowl QB that comes in works hard, leads his team, and oh yeah the FO doesn't have to worry about him retiring every year.

This is as easy of a no brainer as it gets. Will the Texans go after him?? I'd probably bet that pigs will fly before that happens.

We had a nice chance to get Stroud a few years ago when the Jags gave him away to the Bills for small potatoes when we desperately needed a DT then as well. That was a perfect opportunity for the Texans back then, and we did nothing so I won't expect Smith to do anything right now either.

Henderson would be a great acquistion to any team that needs help at Dt though. Some team out there is probably going to get a nice bargain here. I wish it could be us.

Isn't Henderson the guy that gets a coach to slap him in the face before a game to piss him off?

We need that attitude on defense sooooo bad to go with Pollard and Cushing.

We will be in competition with Giants, Falcons, Saints, and maybe the Tacks assuming we make a run.

It's not always up the franchise, it's up to the player as well.

Really grinds my gears when people blame the franchise, when we have no idea what the player, agent, etc was thinking or pushing for.

Fingers crossed...

Maybe the Jags traded him to the Bills because they weren't in the same division.

The Texans won't go after him because he isn't a smaller, nimble, pass rushing DT. That's all they want on the DT rotation. Their pass rush to this point has shown how well that works.

And that's because we didn't offer anything. Stroud was a very good DT at the time at a position that we had a big hole at. Henderson is still pretty good and would fill a huge need right now at DT. There is no reason in an uncapped year why we shouldn't be trying to pick this guy up. He could help out our Dline big time and hopefully stop those double teams that Mario gets all of the time.

I would be very happy with this move. He's only an average pass rusher but is stout against the run. 31 Isn't old for a DT either.

He plays the same position as Amobi: average pass rusher, solid run stopper. If we sign him, that means we would put him in for Amobi. Not for or against, just thinking out loud.

As much disdain as I have for this guy, I wouldn't mind seeing him on the Texans. Hes a big dude, that can eat up a lot of space on the DL, and still has some moves. I doubt it will happen though, so I'm just not even gonna get any slight hopes up.

Passing on Tebow, cutting some of thier higher priced guys, etc.( :hmmm: ) Sounds like a move to LA is imminent.
If the Jags were about to move to LA (don't know), why would they need to cut high priced guys? If they were staying in JAX, then I could understand the cuts.

The Jags draft Tebow, and the fans clamor for him on opening day. He would be a coach killer. The Broncos have the luxury of waiting for Tebow to develop (if he ever does). JDR wouldn't have had that going for him.

I don't think Henderson is that good, anymore. If he's looking to get $paid, I would pass. The Texans passed on paying guys who still had game in Thomas Jones and and Leigh Bodden. I would be puzzled if they paid a guy who might be close to done, like Henderson.

Why? They would be stuck in Jacksonville for the next couple of seasons, losing money. Why pay their higher priced guys while losing money? Cut costs now, because when they move, they'll sell out, if for no other reason than the novelty of having a new team, a new stadium and a chance to rebuild with fans that "would understand" the re-building.

Is that a big deal? Jag fans have been calling for Del Rio's head for a while now.

Meh, I guess I tend to agree about Henderson, but I also believe sometimes people do well in a new setting. He might possibly give someone a couple of decent to good years.

The Texans did pass on Thomas Jones, but didn't they made a decent offer to Bodden, no?

Unless Wayne Weaver took over the war room, Jack Del Rio's opinion on the draft still counts. I can't think of a compelling reason for Del Rio to draft Tebow.

And I can't see any linkage between the Jags offseason moves and an impending move to LaLa Land. I think they dumped Henderson because they didn't think he could play anymore. If they felt he could still play, he'd be on the team. Because the Jags aren't losing money. No team in the NFL actually loses money. They just don't make as much money as most of the other teams.

Regarding a possible move to Los Angeles, that will never happen until Weaver agrees to sell the team. No one in LA will build a new stadium and hand it over to Wayne Weaver. And while Weaver may be bemoaning the money he's not making on luxury boxes, I've never heard that he's actually looking to sell the team. That could change. But right now, there's no real evidence of a Jaguars exodus to SoCal.

According to Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc:

"At this stage of his career, I don't see a dominant all-around player like he and Marcus Stroud were back in the day. Those two were really something with their length, power and athletic ability. Henderson still has some of that, but I see less playmaking ability and certainly less pass rush. To me, he is now the stronger heavier run stopper in a 4-3, which is what Houston needs. Put a guy with Henderson's beef next to [Amobi] Okoye and in front of those linebackers and their run defense might really improve. Not saying that Tennessee couldn't use him, too, but I like the fit in Houston better. No matter what though, I would like to see him in some sort of a rotation and not as a guy who plays nearly every snap."

That's been my opinion for a while, but evidently, the Texans seem to think that putting a rotation of nothing but Ok0ye types out there is the answer to all their DL problems.
