I’ve been working on this off & on for the last couple of weeks & I've finally put together six mock drafts that are all dependent upon our 1st round pick. I’ve waffled back & forth on some players, but believe this is the way we’ll go. The general consensus of the fans on this board is that our 1st round pick will be either Kyle Wilson, Ryan Mathews, or Earl Thomas. So, with that in mind, I put together what I believe will happen depending upon the player available to us at #20. I've also thrown in a couple of mocks involving trade downs & one "I didn't see that one coming" mock. I hope you enjoy them. Critique away.



Scenario #1 - This is the one I think is least likely to happen, because I don’t believe the Texans will take Mathews in the first round. But, if I’m wrong then I’m wrong.

1st) Ryan Mathews (RB) - Mathews has all the intangibles you look for, with great vision, power & good speed. He has been injury prone throughout his college career. He also is a poor receiver & drops a lot of balls. I just don’t think he’s that much better than the RB’s we can get in the 2nd & 3rd rounds. These are the reasons why I don't believe the Texans will select him in the first & will try to trade down if he's there at 20 & there’s no one else we’d rather take at that spot.
2nd) Morgan Burnett (FS) - I like Burnett because he's got great size, speed & athleticism. He's a ballhawk (14 int's in 2 years) & he gives the Texans flexibility because he can play both FS & SS.
3rd) Matt Tennant (C) – Good lateral agility & explosiveness. Able to play both center & guard. Plays with a nasty attitude. Good foot work with ability to get to the second level & adjust to a moving target. He’s very durable, having played in 41 consecutive games. He comes from a school (Boston College) that’s known for producing NFL caliber linemen.
4th) Donovan Warren (CB/FS) - Warren is flying under the radar & would be a steal in the 4th round. Imo, he's dropped because he had a bad 40 at the combine & his pro day. Warren is a very instinctive player with great anticipation. That alone will shave some time off his 40 time under actual game conditions. He’s great against the run, very athletic & physical. He can also play safety. A couple of draft sites are comparing his style of play to Dunta Robinson.
5th) Mike Neal (DT) – Good closing speed & quickness. Able to drop into coverage on zone blitzes. Very strong & commands a double team. However, does have an injury history that will have to be taken into account.
6a) Joique Bell (RB) – Very productive runner that is very strong & patient. Should be able to thrive in the ZBS. Won’t quit fighting for the extra yard.
6b) David Gettis (WR) – 6’3” 217lbs. & ran a 4.39 40 at his Pro Day. Very good hands with good body control to make the acrobatic catches & amazing acceleration for a player of his size. He does catch a lot of balls against his chest rather than catching with his hands alone. He might make a nice compliment to AJ on the opposite side.
7th) Stevenson Sylvester (OLB) – Very athletic, quick, & productive. Has a great burst to get to the QB on blitzes, but doesn’t possess any blitz technique. Has good change of direction abilities. Is a work in progress & not very instinctive. Primarily relies on speed & athleticism to make plays. Will need a lot of coaching up, but he does have speed & you can’t coach speed. Should be a huge asset to special teams early on.


Scenario #2 – This is the one I think will most likely happen.

1st) Kyle Wilson (CB) – If Joe Haden slips to 20 as BeerLover & Awtysst suggests, I’d take him over Wilson. However, if he doesn’t, then Wilson is a no-brainer in my opinion. He should be able to start opposite of Quin from day one.
2nd) Jonathan Dwyer (RB) – In my opinion, Dwyer is the RB the Texans want out of this draft. He’s big, strong, athletic, & has just enough break away speed to rip off some long runs. He’s got good vision & the ability to make one cut & hit the hole. He’s only been a starter for 2 years, so he’s got a lot of tread left on his tires. He’s got good ball control & demonstrated excellent hands at catching the ball out of the backfield during his Pro Day. He has never missed a game due to injury.
3rd) Matt Tennant (C) – Good lateral agility & explosiveness. Able to play both center & guard. Plays with a nasty attitude. Good foot work with ability to get to the second level & adjust to a moving target. He’s very durable, having played in 41 consecutive games. Scenario #3 – If Thomas drops to us at #20.

1st) Earl Thomas (FS) – I haven’t been as impressed with Thomas as most on this board have. Of course, I haven’t watched him play as much either. I’ve always been a believer that you can pick up a solid safety in the later rounds & that they’re not as important as a great CB is to the secondary. Well, Pollard shot my theory all full of holes last year. I now see the importance of us getting a quality FS out of this draft & if all the scouts think this kid is a great one, then who am I to question it?
2nd) Jonathan Dwyer (RB) - In my opinion, Dwyer is the RB the Texans want out of this draft. He’s big, strong, athletic, & has just enough break away speed to rip off some long runs. 5th) Jamar Wall (CB) – Instinctive player that can play both man & zone coverages equally well. Sticks to his man like glue all over the field. Solid tackler & plays the run well. Has a great vertical (40.5”) & uses it to defeat larger WR’s in the endzone. Is a strong special teams player & return man.

Scenario #4 – This is the first trade down mock involving San Diego so they can take Mathews. We send our 1st (#20), 2nd (#51) & 6th (#197) to the Chargers in exchange for their 1st (#28), 2nd (#40), & 3rd (#91). This trade is (49) points in our favor.

1st) Brian Price (DT) – Very strong & quick enough to command double teams. Has a burst off the line at the snap & can penetrate into the backfield. Is immovable off the line & has a great array of moves in rushing the passer as well as a solid bull rush. Poor conditioning & tires easily.

Scenario #5 – This is my second trade down mock involving St Louis. In this scenario, St. Louis decides to take Suh with the 1st pick & trade back up into the first to take Colt McCoy. I believe Maddict5 has already proposed a similar trade down scenario. In this trade, we send our 1st (#20) & our 6th (#187) to St. Louis in exchange for their 2nd (#33), 3rd (#65), & 5th (#132) round picks. All 3 of their picks are the first pick in that round & (+22) points in our favor.

Scenario #6 – This is the “I didn’t see that one coming.” Mock. Cody doesn’t fit the mold of our previous DT’s, but what if the Texans decided to fix the run defense once & for all?

1st) Terrence Cody (DT) – Massive man child. Commands a double team on every play. Great at stuffing the run & collapsing the pocket. Tires easily & is considered a 2 down player at this point. The reason the Texans might do this is, they can play him on 1st & 2nd downs & then pull him, slide Smith over to DT & insert Barwin at DE on obvious passing downs. If he can do what he’s best at on the 1st & 2nd downs, we should have our opponents in 3rd & long quite a bit next season. With proper nutrition & NFL strength & conditioning coaches, Cody could turn into an unstoppable force. Or, not.

I don't like either of your trade down scenerios because I'm not a big fan of Price & Cody is more of a 3-4 NT. Now if your going to change that pick to say... Daryl Washington, TCU then I'm in. scenero #5 works great!

love Burnett also, have him locked in 2nd myself. warming up to Dwyer but think he goes early 3rd. Tennant is solid interior lineman, will compete with Myers. Warren & Wall gotta hit with at least one of them to stick in secondary. Bell is good developmental back. Gettis is interesting, what I like most about him is his downfield blocking something the Texans demand. would change OLB in favor of a QB to develop, one since I changed your 1st 2nd rd. pick to Washington & second a guy like Rusty Smith could develop into a great back-up & as bonus trade value under Kubiaks Pro Style System down the road.

6a) Joique Bell (RB) - Very productive runner that is very strong & patient. Should be able to thrive in the ZBS. Won’t quit fighting for the extra yard.
6b) David Gettis (WR) – 6’3” 217lbs. & ran a 4.39 40 at his Pro Day. Very good hands with good body control to make the acrobatic catches & amazing acceleration for a player of his size. He does catch a lot of balls against his chest rather than catching with his hands alone. He might make a nice compliment to AJ on the opposite side.
7th) Stevenson Sylvester (OLB) – Very athletic, quick, & productive. Has a great burst to get to the QB on blitzes, but doesn’t possess any blitz technique. Has good change of direction abilities. Is a work in progress & not very instinctive. Primarily relies on speed & athleticism to make plays. Will need a lot of coaching up, but he does have speed & you can’t coach speed. Should be a huge asset to special teams early on.


Scenario #4 – This is the first trade down mock involving San Diego so they can take Mathews. We send our 1st (#20), 2nd (#51) & 6th (#197) to the Chargers in exchange for their 1st (#28), 2nd (#40), & 3rd (#91). This trade is (49) points in our favor.

1st) Brian Price (DT) – Very strong & quick enough to command double teams. Has a burst off the line at the snap & can penetrate into the backfield. Is immovable off the line & has a great array of moves in rushing the passer as well as a solid bull rush. Poor conditioning & tires easily.
2nd) Morgan Burnett (FS) - I like Burnett because he's got great size, speed & athleticism. He's a ballhawk (14 int's in 2 years) & he gives the Texans flexibility because he can play both FS & SS.
3a) Jonathan Dwyer (RB) - In my opinion, Dwyer is the RB the Texans want out of this draft. He’s big, strong, athletic, & has just enough break away speed to rip off some long runs. He’s got good vision & the ability to make one cut & hit the hole. He’s only been a starter for 2 years, so he’s got a lot of tread left on his tires. He’s got good ball control & demonstrated excellent hands at catching the ball out of the backfield during his Pro Day. He has never missed a game due to injury.
3b) Matt Tennant (C) – Good lateral agility & explosiveness. Able to play both center & guard. Plays with a nasty attitude. Good foot work with ability to get to the second level & adjust to a moving target. He’s very durable, having played in 41 consecutive games. He comes from a school (Boston College) that’s known for producing NFL caliber linemen.
4th) Donovan Warren (CB/FS) - Warren is flying under the radar & would be a steal in the 4th round. Imo, he's dropped because he had a bad 40 at the combine & his pro day. Warren is a very instinctive player with great anticipation. That alone will shave some time off his 40 time under actual game conditions. He’s great against the run, very athletic & physical. He can also play safety. A couple of draft sites are comparing his style of play to Dunta Robinson.

In scenario #2 & #3, you select Dwyer in 2nd yet in scenario #4 he is available in 3rd #81? Either you wasted a 2nd in first two or he is unavailable in the 4th scenario. I enjoy these "what if? trades" and am not opposed to one with San Diego. I'd prefer to swap firsts & pick up their 2nd if they really want Mathews. Their picks would be #20 and in second #55 Torrell Troup NT or Cam Thomas. Texans would have #28 (I'd be looking at Cb Devin McCourty or Nate Allen FS).
2nd round #40 Morgan Burnett FS; #51 Gerhart or Tate
3rd round Ansah CB/FS (if you don't take McCourty) or Major Wright FS
My picks: McCourty CB, TG your power back; Major Wright.
4th Jeff Owens DT 5th Eric Olsen C/OG 6th Joique Bell RB 6B Holliday

I don't like either of your trade down scenerios because I'm not a big fan of Price & Cody is more of a 3-4 NT. Now if your going to change that pick to say... Daryl Washington, TCU then I'm in. scenero #5 works great!

love Burnett also, have him locked in 2nd myself. warming up to Dwyer but think he goes early 3rd. Tennant is solid interior lineman, will compete with Myers. Warren & Wall gotta hit with at least one of them to stick in secondary. Bell is good developmental back. Gettis is interesting, what I like most about him is his downfield blocking something the Texans demand. would change OLB in favor of a QB to develop, one since I changed your 1st 2nd rd. pick to Washington & second a guy like Rusty Smith could develop into a great back-up & as bonus trade value under Kubiaks Pro Style System down the road.

Washington is intriguing, but I read on one site where he's at his best when he's kept clean. Do you feel that our DT's as they stand now can keep the pressure off of him? That's the reason I decided to go after a DT first. I would rather have taken Lamar Houston, but felt the first pick in the 2nd round was reaching a bit.

I believe Dwyer can be had in the late 2nd to early 3rd round, but it's always possible he could slip a little lower. But, in the end you're probably right & he won't last until the 81st pick.

After McCoy & Suh there is a significant drop off until Williams & Odrick. Price may be leading the pack after those four are gone but not significantly to justify a 1st rd. pick, thats just my opinion. It is a fairly deep DT class however & the Texans can still address this need in a later round, someone who fits their system best, I'd like a really high effort type of guy instead. Jeff Zgonnia is a perfect example of a smaller quicker, high motor/effort guy despite he's up in years still highly productive.

Daryl is the elite WILL prospect in this years draft who would complete a tremendous & dominant linebacker corps. His ability to close & adjust in coverage is an area that would complete the group, in other words they would have no holes, dominant in every area, but thats just one mans opinion :barman:

You might be surprised how close a first pick in the second Houston will be. Teams are gonna keep playing his last game over and over. He made some bucks for himself that day.
 
After you two finished smelling each others rear ends, basically your saying with your six scenarios....we're going with the same five on the offense line and to hell what you saw last year ? Don't believe what your lying eyes are telling you ? Nice. Shear Genius.
