Jason Babin to be a Titan?

Hardcore Texan

Magnet Man
Per Adam Schefter's Twitter:

Adam_Schefter Titans will sign free-agent DE Jason Babin to one-year, $1 million offer sheet that Eagles will have one week to match.

Won't that be something if we seem him twice this year. At least we know Matt won't be hit from that side

:ohsnap:

Just kidding, I don't have anything against the guy. I didn't even realize he was an eagle.

I realize that. We are going to see him in action against our OL at least for one game regardless, maybe twice now. Just thought it was interesting info. (Yes assuming he doesn't get injured, cut from the team, or die beforehand and the coaches let him actually play in the game.)

Any O-Lineman that gives up a sack to Babin should be fined. Heck, add TE & RB to that list.

Watch him make their team and come back to kill us twice a year. He'll finish every season with 6 sacks but 5 of them will come in two games against the Texans.

Babin has actually been utilized well as a situational player at 4-3 end since he left the team.

That's what I was thinking. I don't think he's as bad as people are making him out to be. I watched a couple of the Eagle's games this year and he was a factor in them. I'm not talking pro bowl factor, be he was making plays.

Thank you very much Casserly. You gave up alot of picks in the 2004 draft for this dude because you were afraid Tennessee would draft him before you picked again in the second round, and now they are positioned to get him anyways. And there were some good players to get in that drafts 2nd round and beyond.

Why would you say that, thats just asking for it!

Familiarity with the Texans version of Murphy's Law.

Babin was never as bad as people made him out to be. He was just another pass rushing DE who couldn't make the transition to 3-4 OLB. It's a pretty common story, not everybody is going to be able to make the move.

Failing that his career was set back a few years but since then, utilized properly he's be respectable and I think he's going to have a career year this season. We have Conner Barwin now and they're not that different really. Within an inch of each others height, a handful of pounds apart, both had 4 sacks their rookie year (ok, 4.5 for Barwin but he didn't have to change positions either).

The Texans blew it trading Babin for Boulware in my opinion. They should have given Babin more time to get the move back to DE at the NFL level down. Instead they punted him in favor of Anthony Weaver of all people.

Sometimes the Texans moves make no sense to me whatsoever.

Clay Matthews, basically a 4-3 DE in college, became in GB what the Texans wanted Babin to become with the Texans: a pass-rushing OLB in the 3-4 who got double digit sacks, and in just his rookie year.
I mentioned GB because Capers, the Texans coach who drafted Babin when he came out of college, is now the GB DC who was probably very instrumental in the decision to draft Matthews.
Too bad Capers couldn't accomplish in Houston what he has in Green Bay ?

Our 3-4 defense wasn't that bad during the first couple of years, iirc. The players were long on the tooth, but that D was responsible for this NFL record:

Dec. 8, 2002: Despite just 47 yards of total offense, the Texans shock eventual AFC North champion Pittsburgh 24-6 at Heinz Field. All three of Houston's touchdowns are scored by the defense - two interception returns by CB Aaron Glenn and a fumble return by CB Kenny Wright. The 47 yards mark the lowest output by a winning team in NFL history.

We had some good players in our 3-4 scheme, there was one guy in particular Jeff Posey who had 8 sacks his first season with us and then for some reason Casserly didn't retain him.

Jason Babin is a decent player, just not a first round type of player. But, he is no match for Duane Brown or Eric Winston, to me its just a sign of desperation by the Tacks because they can't get a decent DE.

Nope, Posey bolted the moment he became a free agent. He was gone like midnight the day he could sign with somebody else. He parlayed those 8 sacks into the biggest payday of his career and I can't say I blame him for it.

Hated losing him at the time though.

Barwin is > than Babin

I see no reason to make that proclaimation at this point. I hope it's true of course but I'll wait to see if Barwin blows up next year before I say that.

That ">" is a very slight one in my book until he demonstrates otherwise.

Really looks like the Titans have dropped the level of talent in their
pass rushing defense when you go from the likes of Kearse & Van DunVosh to Babin. Of course that was when they were at their peek, right now Babin is maybe better than either former Titan ?

Kearse is useless and was a healthy scratch much of '09. KVB was oft-injured but still could have been productive and was great for the locker room and practice field. I think he will be missed. I know nothing of Babin at this point but I have full trust in Fisher and Washburn when it comes to the DL (as well as the OL... the only aspects of the team in which personnel moves shouldn't be questioned by fans like myself, IMO).

It will be interesting if Babin A) gets out of training camp and B) has any impact at all.

He is a positional backup. Another GM signing to fill a backup spot. This is like that whats his name backup CB that Tecan fans were salivationg over that never even made the roster. Had a 10 page thread about a guy who never made it through camp. Hope this one gets there. :gun:

Sparrow, no idea what you and Bulluck were talkin about when it comes to regards of Babin, but I didn't think he was all that bad..... Good luck and I think he sucks!! And I think we're goinna kick y'all's ass this season - both times!!

In any event. its a long offseason, let's have some fun!!! ;)

Haha...

I really do not know much about him. I will ask my friend who is an eggle fan but he will probably only get a handful of downs a game.

Right back at you (you know what I mean). Off season sucks!

Here is to a good draft for the both of us ... more us then you :pirate:

i always liked babin (what an incredibly bad trade to get him though), as a defensive end with a hand on the ground he was relatively effective. he's not going to be starting for anyone, but with adequate reps he'll be noticed. back as a texan i wrote that he's not great in any area, but above-average across the board and a hard worker ... from what little i've seen from him that still applies.

how sad is this, babin was our leader in sacks the season before we let him go (with 5 sacks in 3 starts).

I have no idea what I'm talking about either. I know nothing about the guys abilities. I just figure he has some talent enough to get drafted in the 1st; maybe Washburn can get some production out of him and if not, he probably wont be here very long.

VY doesn't lose in Houston. :breakdance:

Babin was drafted to convert from DE to become a Joey Porter pass rushing 3-4 OLB. He was pretty good but not great against the run in that role but he has no natural flair for pass rushing. At least while here he relied on speed and a spin move and he ain't Dwight Freeney so it didn't work often. As a 4-3 DE he is extremely under weight/strength and doesn't have the speed to overcome it at least while with the Texans. Haven't watched him enough from the Eagles to comment. That sounds a little harsh but to sum up solid player but not spectacular.

So he was a DE in college and then drafted to be an OLB, had little impact, was switched back to DE, had little impact.... all in Houston? Sounds like you guys messed him up pretty well. :)

Babin was a pretty darn good third round pick, but the problem was, he just wasn't picked there.

Watch, he'll have 4 sacks a year vs us. Would figure. Just like if we play P-Burnt, he'll take two to thee house. We have bad luck.

Well, he has two sacks already today and like four or five for the year, wth? where was that when he played for us?

During the 3 months he actually played 4-3 DE for us he played well, then we traded him for a safety that never played I believe. I was not happy

i think he must look terrible during practice to have so many coaches passing him over, because i've always thought he's been solid or better on gameday. that's at defensive end though as he is with the titans, he's been fairly bad as a rush OLB.

he didn't last long with the browns either though, man, i hate the titans!

Thats because the Browns played 34. He did ok in the very few plays he got in Seattle before they released him. He's doesn't have the mental skills set to be an effective 34 OLB, but if you let him just go after the QB he's a quality (Not amazing) DE who can play decent against the run.

Alot of people don't like him because of the picks we gave up to get him. I personally though he just wasn't Linebacker material but thought he played decent enough when he was here.

I never had a problem with babin. He never lit the world on fire with his play, which was a part of his job description being our first round pick, but he was pretty solid in his last year here. Hopefully he succeeds, just not when he plays against us.

washburn is an amazing d-line coach. they just keep turning nobodies into productive players on the d-line

Babin could have been a solid player with us. The problem was his best skill was rushing the passer and the defensive genius Vic Fangio always had him dropping back in coverage. Thats just a classic example of a coach not putting his players in a position to excel.
