No Retread Running Backs for Texans per John McClain

Not so fast..

I have inside sources close to the Texans FO that the Texans are INDEED interested in Chester Taylor and is going to pursuit him once FA starts tonight.

Posted by: dan
This dan fellow is saying he has sources saying they ARE going to pursue Chester Taylor. And of course McClain is saying the opposite.

Now it comes down to this, should we believe this unknown guy who claims to have sources within the Texans FO or should we believe beat writer, McClain?

My conclusion: They're both full of **** and don't have an effin' idea of what's going on within the Texans FO, nor what's Rick Smith gonna do in the FA.

There was another guy on the ht.com boards saying they also had interest in LT when McClain said they didnt.

I suppose, technically, the guys who claim to have inside knowledge and McClain are all correct.

The Texans may want to offer Chester Taylor a contract, but it won't be nearly what he wants.

McClain is not the guy to trust on these things. He puts out what the FO wants him to put out.

Personally, I think that LT still has a lot left in the tank and would be great for our system. It'd be foolish to base these decisions on their experience with Ahman Green.

Personally, i would love the texans to get a FA running back just for the sheer fact we can rub in John's face that was wrong.

It might be wise for us to bring in a veteran RB at least. If we draft one our RB corps will consist of a bunch of babies who desperately need the mentorship of a vet. It might be a while, but I think we'll eventually bring in a vet. It might not be LT, TJ, CT, etc., but I think we get somebody.

Id be lying if I said I wasnt interested in Chester Taylor. That guy has been good for a while but has never started so the mileage is low.

I think Texans will watch this first surge of free agency and then start bringing in players next week who can compete for jobs or back up.

From his rolling commentary/Twitter feed.

Is this ust me, but isn't every player that a team signs someone who could compete for jobs or back-up?

you would think so. its a pretty glaring weakness and there is a slew of guys that could come in and have a good shot at improving our team. i'm not sure the price would be that prohibitive either...it just may take some patience for the candidates to test the water and come back to us and accept possibly a more Texans-friendly deal than they originally asked for.

we might end up with a Willie Parker on a one year deal with possibly a team option in 2011 (the dead season). i don't think they are going to go after the top tier guys (taylor, jones, tomlinson). the team is operating as if there is a cap so don't expect much if anything at any position. after all, they just signed Matt Turk. Championship time.

Other than the normal free-spending teams, most of the league is acting as if there's still a cap. Do research, read about the league and you'll find the Texans are NOT the "cheap" team.

And yes, I do expect us to bring in a vet RB too. It'll be for a decent price too and rightfully so

Yes, but that's just John reporting at his best.

I think it is exactly the opposite and since Capers/Casserly's departure McClain has been virtually locked out by the Texans. Very rarely anymore do you see or hear a line from him nowadays that "sources with the team told me" or anything similar and you heard that a lot in the Capers/Casserly era. You can tell in the interviews that Kubiak and Smith don't like McClain.

Just saw that the Raiders released Justin Fargas. Anyone for giving him a chance? I'm not real familiar with him, but he doesn't have a lot of miles on him.

I couldn't remember Fargas being injured a lot, just McFadden. Were Fargas' injuries minor or did he miss a lot of time with nagging injuries like A. Green seemed to have with us?
I was just looking into that and didn't see much. The Raiders say he failed a physical, but I think that's just hot air. He had a $1.7 mil. roster bonus if he was on the roster Monday.

Fargas had a ton of injuries in college and very early in his NFL career. The last handful of year he has been healthy, but in NFL terms has also been just another guy.

I seem to remember a few people on here being big on him. Oh well, it's not like I'm dying to get him. I like Chester Taylor a ton more.

Sign him

Fargas is a talent that has experience with Lane Kiffin in the ZBS.

Fargas,Hardesty,Foster and Slaton would be a RB corps.

Fargas should be cheap also. Which is a good thing for the cost concious Texans

I believe, he was out with a knee injury the last 2 games of last season and was battling a groin injury the year before which I think also lead him to miss first 2 2009 games.

Not really directed at you, but when I said healthy I meant normal Rb healthy versus, career stuff.

I want to say that in his college early MFL career he totally shattered his leg and had a serious knee injury. Honestly, if my mind does not have too much jack and coke clouding it he is very fortunate to have had any type of NFL career much less making it to 30 as RB.

You know, his relative success after that terrible fracture has surprised me also. Besides luck, there must have been some real motivation and effort on his part.

I'm OK with it.

When you look at that Raiders team, there's just so much disfunction on it. I always thought that Fargas was sort of a consistently "good" piece of their puzzle, when compared to the absolute junk that surrounded him.

He gets through the smallest windows of space, IMO, and seems to churn out some good yardage when it looks like there's nothing there. I won't completely compare him to Domanick Davis, but his mentality and his way of nosing through the gang-tackling to find any sort of progress that might be there for him, is commendable.

He's not a strong guy. But he is agile as a cat; able to turn the corner very fast, and he's not going to care that he's part of a RBBC group of guys. He's been there, done that.

Sounds like taking a look at him wouldn't be a bad idea. Certainly can't be worse than Brown or Henry.

He has always been an incredibly high effort guy. Hate to have him come here to end his career and then be excoriated by our fans when he doesn't carry the load.

Go Texans!
It's unbelieveable how much respect is being shown to Fargas on the Raiders message board. This piece was posted on the official site as a tribute.
You can read what the fans have to say, and use it as a good way to estimate a player's value.

Some Falcons fans might be ecstatic over the past two days, but they should venture over here and see what 99.9% of us Texans fans thought of Dunta's antics and his overall value this past season.

I remember long ago, when we acquired Philip Buchanon from the Raiders. A lot of us, including myself, were thrilled. We were getting a fast guy at CB, and it just felt awesome to make a move for some other team's guy.

Then we started seeing what the Raiders fans had to say.

Ouch! Talk about having a sudden sinking feeling. And, they were right.

I am not a Fargas fan boy, but he plays very hard and he is quick on his feet. He's a veteran, so you won't get some starry-eyed rookie who takes a year to fit in and understand things.

Yep, and the same thing with Jordan Black a couple of years ago. A lot of us thought we were getting a good player but the Chiefs fans were glad to see him go. Turns out they were right.

I've always liked Fargas. He seems like a good, hard working kid. But I think all he does is eliminate Moats from the equation. He doesn't solve the RB issue but he gives us a good solid backup. Can he block?

His blocking and recieving out of the backfield are questions I have. He doesn't have a lot of catches, but the Raiders really haven't had a QB for several years. Russell couldn't hit the ocean from the beach. The only reason I even brought him up was more out of name recognition than anything else. I would rather keep Moats than get Fargas. Not to say I wouldn't mind seeing him try out or get some TC reps for a minimal contract.

From what I've read, Fargas, despite the Raider's indecisive and non-reactive QBs, is considered the best protection pass block/blitz pickup of the three (Bush/McFadden/Fargas).

Fargas denies that he failed the Raiders physical.......their $1.7 million bounty. He is being courted by the Niners and is on his way to visit the Chiefs.

A good player to compare Fargas to is DDW. He can do a little bit of everything including get short yardage, pass block and is good in pass pro.

The only difference between the two is DDW has never run a 4.35 40 in his life. Fargas has.

He probably will sign with the Chiefs. If he doesn't I hope the Texans take a look.
