Texans re-sign Turk

Lock/move if needed.

Rotoworld:
Texans re-signed P Matt Turk to a one-year contract.

Turk turns 40 before the season, but punters have long shelf lives and he posted a strong 39.4 net average last year. He also didn't have a single try blocked or returned for a score, dropping 24 punts inside the opposing 20.

Good stuff, I like Turk and what he's doing for us. One less position to worry about!

We could have gotten a young Punter at the end of the draft and paid him 1/4 of what Turk will be making. Not a good signing.

Despite the above stats cited, all the rankings I remember coming across have Turk in the lower third rung of NFL punters. I also remember that we as a group were not all that impressed with his last ear's performance. Hopefully, he regains the level he has been known for. Meanwhile, not inviting healthy competition in TC would be quite short-sighted on the part of the Texans.

ST coach Joe Marciano wants high, controlled kicks, in the middle of the field that don't lead to returns. He doesn't want a punter that outkicks the coverage.

He had a better 2009 than 2008.

I wonder if this was also a signing to get Kris Brown back to par. This way they can have a clear understanding that it's not the holder if Kris is screwing up in preseason.

It was my impression that Marciano also wanted high inside the 20 marks which has been a Turk strength, until last year.

We had the 9th best net avg on punts last year. 2008 we were 28th.

As much as people rag on A. Davis' WR skills, he's an awesome STer. Martinez came on very strong in ST's too.

LOL, sorry, but I had to find something to keep me from giving a punter props.

NFL.com has him at 12, and about the same in 2007. And again, not very impressive inside the 20. I like Turk. But like some other positions, we tend to minimize the importance of seeking out legitimate competition in OTA/preseason.

I was following up on TC's comment that he kicks they way they like and it is was effective last year. That's why I referred to the net average punting for the team showing the combination of his kicks and the coverage.

Both of you have a legitimate point. The reason inside the 20 caught my eye was that we seemed to give up too much in field position at times, and had to rely on a D that wasn't always prepared to take care of business.
